Community energy This photo shows our community protesting about climate change during the major summer flood of 2007 We think people want to do things but don’t know what to do or how to do it Low Carbon West Oxford was set up to address this issue. We started in autumn 2007 and already have 80 members, 1% of our population. Through the Big Green Challenge we want to find ways of engaging the whole community, including businesses, to achieve 80% carbon reductions by 2050 We want to pilot the approach in the Big Green Challenge year by engaging 35 households and 5 businesses to devise strategies for reducing their household emissions by 80%. They won’t implement the strategies within the year but we will all have understood better the scale of the challenge and what the opportunities and barriers are We have chosen the number 35 because that is the number of households that would have to make the change each year to 2050 if we are to achieve our carbon reduction targets We will involve the whole community through the year through our arts, culture and communications work package�

Headlines: three most significant things since last time Full model now working: LCWO registered charity; WOCR has over 100 shareholders; second run of Low Carbon Living Programme 60 households signed up Runner-up in Big Green Challenge: 100k prize money Winner of Phase 1 LCCC: 800k prize money Getting full model up and running will allow us to brand ourselves and get our story much straighter. Getting funding from NESTA and DECC has allowed us to: fund most of our pipeline of renwable energy projects and so get a significant income stream going; develop our Householder programme into a full Low Carbon Living programme with fully automated carbon footprinting and pledging tool and 60 housholds booked on. Will have covered 5% of our community.
