Faith“For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a

mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move

from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will

be impossible for you.” —Matthew 17:20

Integrity“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,

whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there

is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

—Philippians 4:8

Inclusiveness “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor

free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one

in Christ Jesus.” —Galatians 3:28

Compassion“When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he

had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

—Matthew 14:14

Social Justice“He has showed you what is good; and what the Lord

requires of you: to do justice, and to love kindness and

to walk humbly with your God.” —Micah 6:8

Stewardship“There will come seven years of great plenty

throughout all the land of Egypt. After them there

will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will

be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine will

consume the world.”—Genesis 41:29–30

MissionIn the spirit of the Gospels, the mission of Trinity Church Wall Street is to build generations of faithful leadership,

to build up neighborhoods, and to build financial capacity for holy service in New York City and around

the world. Our mission is grounded in our core values.

VisionWe seek to serve and heal the world by building neighborhoods that live gospel truths, generations of

faithful leaders, and sustainable communities.

Core Values

Core Values guide us in carrying out our mission and realizing our vision.

By their nature, core values are touchstones for prayer, discernment, ongoing conversation, and action. We seek

a deep understanding and ongoing engagement with Trinity’s Core Values. Over the years, we will continue

reflecting on what our Core Values mean in their application; how they challenge and inform decisions and actions

in Trinity’s ministries, and how they help our ministries be aligned with our mission and vision.

Welcome to St. Paul’s ChapelPlease add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together.

If you would like to pray with someone confidentially, for yourself or others, go to the altar rail during communion time.

About this ServicePalm Sunday, which has been celebrated by Christians since at least the 4th century, marks the transition from our Lenten period of preparation into Holy Week. The concept of that transition defines this service: we begin with a festive remembrance of Jesus’ final entry into Jerusalem—a parade of welcome when people lined the road ahead of him with cloth and palm branches. At the Gospel, the story of the Passion is read; we’re asked to consider where Jesus’ path will finally lead: to his arrest, conviction, and death on the cross.

The Episcopal tradition moves through the story of Easter slowly and deliberately. Holy Week culminates in what we call the Triduum: a three-part service that arcs from Maundy Thursday through Good Friday and, finally, into the surpassing joy of Easter. Your Trinity clergy and Education staff are always available to provide resources and support if you’d like more information about this historic celebration, the very heart of our Christian joy and hope.

The Gospel Reading Matthew 21:1-11 GWMV p. 79, adapted

Deacon A Reading from the Gospel according to Matthew.

When Jesus and his disciples were just outside Jerusalem, Jesus called two of the disciples and said, “Go into town. Right away you will see a donkey tied up, with a colt. Untie them and bring them here. If anyone asks you what you’re doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them.’”

So they went as Jesus asked them to, got the donkey and colt, and Jesus rode into town. There were lots of people around; they began to spread their coats on the road in front of them, and cut down branches from the trees, and put them on the road for him to ride on like a carpet. The crowd was shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David! He is so blessed. Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When they finally reached Jerusalem, everyone was abuzz. “Who could possibly be causing such excitement?” The crowds answered, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth!”

On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and help us to always call him our King, and follow him down the road to eternal life. The Liturgy of the WordThe First Reading Philippians 2:5-11 GWMV p. 81

Reader A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians.

I want you to think the way Jesus thought. He was God and yet he wasn’t so full of himself that he needed to take advantage of being God. He emptied himself of the privileges God has, and was born as a servant. He humbled himself and became obedient, as we should be. Jesus let God lead him wherever God wanted him to go. God rewarded him and lifted him on his shoulders. Now Jesus’ name is the name that makes us all bow down to him. All of creation knows him and worships him. Everyone should know that Jesus is Lord, and brings glory to the Father.

The Passion Gospel Matthew 27:11-54 GWMV p. 81, adapted

Deacon The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

There is no congregational response.

Jesus had been arrested and taken to meet the governor. The governor asked him, “So, are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You say so.” That’s all he would say. He didn’t answer any of the accusations anyone made against him. The governor even asked Jesus if he’d heard what people were saying he’d done, because he couldn’t believe Jesus just stood there and didn’t say a word.

Once a year at festival time the governor would release a prisoner for the crowd: any prisoner the crowd wanted. The governor was sure they would want Jesus released. The chief priests talked the crowd into asking for Barabbas to be released rather than Jesus. The governor said, “But what do you want me to do with Jesus?”

The crowd yelled, “Crucify him!”

“Why?” asked the governor. “What has he done to deserve to die?”

They shouted even louder, “Crucify him!”

So the governor released Barabbas, and had Jesus taken to the cross. The soldiers put a purple robe on him to make him look like a fake king, and twisted some thorns into a fake crown. They put a stick in his hand and knelt in front of him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews.’’

When they were done mocking him, they put his own clothes back on him and marched him off to Golgotha, which means the Place of a Skull. There, they nailed him to the cross. They wrote a sign to hang over his head that read: “This is Jesus, King of the Jews.”

People walked by and made fun of Jesus hanging there. “If he’s the Son of God, why can’t he save himself? We’d believe him if he did.” Even the criminals who were hanging on crosses next to him made fun of him.

At noon, the sun went dark. At three o’clock in the afternoon Jesus cried out, “Why have you abandoned me, God?” He cried out again and then took one last breath and died. When Jesus died, the earth shook and rocks were split in two. A Roman soldier, who was watching over Jesus, was terrified at the earthquake the moment of Jesus’ death. “This man was the Son of God,” he said.

Celebrant It is truly right and good and joyful to give you thanks, holy and loving God. In you, we find renewal, forgiveness, and hope. You seek us out, and change our hearts of stone to hearts of love that beat for you and for the world you have made.

And so, joining with the angels who praise you night and day, we give voice to every creature under heaven as we sing with joy:

Sanctus WLP 785

Sung two times.

Words: Variation on a traditional liturgical text; Music: Composer of melody unknown; arr. based on a two-part version as taught by Pablo D. Sosa (b. 1933)

Celebrant Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Because of your great love, you sent us your son, Jesus. He reached out to heal the sick and the suffering; he preached good news to the poor. On the cross, he opened his arms to all.

On the night when he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread and gave you thanks; then he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, he took the cup of wine; when he had given thanks, he gave it to them to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my Blood, shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And so, remembering his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us, and upon these gifts of bread and wine, we pray, your Holy Spirit of love. Unite all who share in this heavenly food, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever.

All AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer BCP p. 364

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

This is a service of Holy Eucharist according to Rite II, including the proper liturgy for Palm Sunday, which begins on page 270 of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Scripture readings are appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) and are excerpted from God’s Word, My Voice (GWMV) by Lyn Zill Briggs, which is a version of Biblical texts considered more accessible for children. Hymns come from The Hymnal 1982, Wonder, Love and Praise (WLP), and Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS). The Prayers of the People and other service elements usually taken from the BCP may also come from additional sources as noted, including the Book of Occasional Services (BOS), Enriching Our Worship (EOW),

and A New Zealand Prayer Book (NZPB).
