RABBI’S MeSSAge

This month we will celebrate a special moment in our congregation’s life, as we dedicate the Rabbi Leonard A. Helman Educational Center

and Library. Considerable efforts have gone forth to create an extensive and inspiring library for our congregation. Valerie Frost has worked to build and repair a tremendous collection of books, many of which were part of Rabbi Helman’s personal library. She has spent countless hours repairing, annotating, and organizing our collection, in order that everyone may enjoy the beauty of Jewish books. In addition, we are building a new collection for our children, and the students in our religious school.

Thanks also to the tremendous work provided by Larry Singer. Our bookshelves are secure and prepared for future book donations in our 21st year. Many board members and “gibor’eem,” i.e., strong men of our congregation helped assemble the shelves and create the outline of our library. As we are the “people of the book,” we need to think of sharing our knowledge, our traditions, and our understanding of Jewish history with future generations. To be sure, the Rabbi Helman library mirrors our belief in our future, and our love of our past leader, who inspired so many of us in learning, Tikkun Olam, and devotion to the Jewish community.

One of the realities of a library is that we find ourselves with sacred books which can no longer be used, such as damaged prayer books and Tanachs (Bibles). Jewish tradition has provided for the proper disposal of such volumes, to show respect for the divine name and sacredness of Torah texts. The custom of burying a worn Torah, Bible, or prayer book relates to the basic prohibition against misusing the name of God. Rashi in the 11th century taught that a Torah or sacred book which was no longer fit for use was not to be kept. It was to be buried in an earthen jar in the grave of a scholar

(Code of Jewish Law, 154:5). So, the custom of burying worn Hebrew volumes in the grave of a scholar became an accepted practice in the early Middle Ages, both in the German and Sephardic communities. Torahs would be buried in an earthen urn and buried near a scholar’s grave. Of course, an unusable scroll could be placed in a specifically safe place, called a “geniza,” a repository where such texts would not be harmed. Thus, we know of the Cairo geniza, opened in the late 1890’s by Rabbi Solomon Schechter of Britain, who found ancient manuscripts that had been deposited there more than eight centuries earlier. Another tradition is that a “posul” Torah, a scroll that has been damaged or is beyond repair, may be kept in the ark, but not used.

Part of our ceremony on Sunday March 26th will be to bury sacred books on our property, to show reverence and respect for our traditions and the divine name. While some have argued that such burials occur on cemetery grounds, the Reform movement, in a Rabbinic “response” written in 1985, maintained that sacred books can be buried on synagogue grounds, and the property should be appropriately marked. Let us all revel in the beauty of our library, and give appropriate blessings for those volumes that are given a sacred resting place.

I want to add a few words about Passover, as we anticipate a fantastic Congregation Beit Tikva 2nd Night Community Passover Seder on Tuesday evening, April 11th. For so many Jews, Pesach is our favorite holiday, replete with delicious food, timeless stories and music, and sense of communal warmth. Why do the Passover words resonate so strongly in our minds? Two phrases echo for me—“to remember the going forth from Egypt,” and “we were strangers in the land of Egypt.” These ideas are embedded in our consciousness—that our journey towards freedom is a continuous struggle, and as Jews, we must understand the plight of the stranger, the person on the margins of society. So, we are reminded to do for others and lift the stranger in our midst. May we be blessed with strength and good health during this Passover season.

B’shalom,

Rabbi Martin W. Levy505.670.4671

Dear Friends,

L ife at Congregation Beit Tikva is very exciting. I would like to share with you some of the events

we have planned during the next several months. More information about these events can be found throughout the Bulletin and in our e-blasts.

We will be celebrating Shabbat Across America for the twenty-first consecutive year on March 3, 2017, with a special “Tot Shabbat” service for children and congregants at 5:30pm, followed by a pot-luck dinner at 6:00pm. This is a time when we join other congregations around the United States to celebrate our Jewish heritage and the gift of the Sabbath with food, comraderie, and prayer. The event is always well attended; we encourage all our members to spread the word throughout the Jewish community and to bring guests.

On Sunday, March 12th, Cantor Ephraim Herrera and the Beit Tikva Players will regale us with “Esther Get Your Gun,” an entertaining and original musical extravaganza honoring the feast of Purim. Two weeks later, on Sunday, March 26th, we will be formally dedicating our Leonard A. Helman Library. We ask that members consider contributing books to our Library from the “Wish List” on AmazonSmile.com (see page 5) as we continue to grow this important educational resource.

Our 2nd Night Community Passover Seder will be held on Tuesday, April 11th, starting at 6:00 pm at the synagogue. Members are strongly encouraged to make reservations for the catered dinner as soon as possible to ensure a place at the table. On Sunday, April 23rd,

which is Erev Yom Ha’Shoah, we will be screening the critically acclaimed documentary film by Paul Bachow, “A Journey into the Holocaust.” Finally, on Sunday, May 7th, our Vice President, Phil Goldstone, will take us through early New Mexico history with his presentation on “Maps, Mapmakers, and Troublemakers in Mid-1800’s New Mexico.”

In addition to these special events, Rabbi Levy continues to lead weekly Torah Study on Saturday mornings at 9:15am, and Adult Education classes every Wednesday evening starting at 6:00pm. Both programs take place in the Leonard A. Helman Library with new participants joining us every week. Participants at our well-attended Friday night Sabbath services enjoy the wonderful musical contributions of our Cantor Ephraim Herrera in addition to the wisdom and guidance of our Rabbi.

As you can see, we have much to offer as a Congregation, and we are always seeking new ways to reach out not only to our members, but to the

Santa Fe community at large. We are living in a time of great tension and apprehension. We have all read reports of increasing violence and hate-speech directed not only at immigrants and refugees, but at Jews as well. Not only “somewhere else,” but here in New Mexico—swastikas scrawled on the campus of UNM and bomb threats at the Albuquerque JCC. In such times, it is critical that we stand up for our beliefs and live our lives proudly as Jews, undaunted and unafraid, but with our eyes wide open to potential threats both here and abroad.

Whether your life as a Jew in Santa Fe includes regular attendance at services or only appearances on special occasions and at the High Holy Days, know that our Congregation of Hope exists for you and for all of us. Your ongoing participation and financial support is more important now than ever.

Shalom, Paul Grace505.690.8505

we are entering a very busy time for Congregation Beit Tikva. The many and varied activities are sure signs of a vibrant and growing congregation.

We have welcomed seven new families so far this year and look forward to getting to know them as they become more involved in our community.

Among the many programs being offered during the month of March, I want to bring to your attention our involvement with Amazon Smile. This is a feature of Amazon.com designed for not-for-profits such as Beit Tikva. If you purchase anything from Amazon.com by using their “Smile” profile they will donate an amount equal to 5% of your purchase price to Beit Tikva. If you also are an Amazon Prime member you will save on shipping. Beit Tikva has posted a “wish list” to Amazon in the form of children’s books that Rabbi Levy and Valerie Frost have identified as suitable for inclusion in the children’s section of the soon-to-be-dedicated Leonard A. Helman Library. Should you choose to donate one of these books we have created a bookplate commemorating your donation that will be placed in the book on the day of the dedication. Go to www.smile.amazon.com to sign up for Beit Tikva to be the beneficiary of your generosity. (Do not use Congregation Beit Tikva as our 501c3 was issued only as Beit Tikva) Once you have completed the sign up, the “wish list” of books will appear if you want to purchase any of them, or continue to purchase anything you are shopping for. It is an easy way to support your community and we thank you for every way that you show your support.

If sponsoring an Oneg works best for you, please send a check for $50 to Congregation Beit tikva. We will contact you to ensure your oneg ideas are carried out within the budget.

Pot-lucks at Congregation Beit tikva have always been a wonderful communal experience.  the food is delicious, plentiful and there is a great variety.  In addition, eating family style strengthens our sense of community. I encourage each of you to sit with those you have not spent time with. It will be yet another way to expand our congregation.

Please take your leftovers home with you.  It is best not to keep items for “next week” because by that time, those items may have passed their peak.

collection of books to us. Most of the books were his own, but from notes inside many of the books we see that some were from his mentor Rabbi Abraham Klausner, and many were gifts from friends and congregants. Jewish filmmaker Paul Bachow lives with the awareness that he is alive only because his

grandmother survived a pogrom in Eastern Europe and because of her subsequent immigration to America at the age of nine. If his grandmother had stayed in Eastern Europe, his mother would most likely have been one of the 6 million Jews exterminated by the Germans during World War II. Then he would have never have been born. Paul, like so many others, has been plagued with the inability to understand why a nation was so fixated on exterminating Jews and other minorities. This film attempts to answer why the Holocaust and other genocides happened and why genocide continues to happen even after the Holocaust.

tradition, Jewish humor, storytelling, fiction by well-known Jewish writers, and other categories of literature and inquiry. For us to go from no library to one of this breadth is remarkable.

We will, however, always be looking for ways to improve the collection. Through time books age and become unusable for a variety of reasons. They may deteriorate physically, become damaged through overuse or misuse (or lost!), or become dated in their facts or methodology. We will be depending on our congregants for the foreseeable future to help introduce more recently published materials in good condition to our library.

The following is the policy on book donation:

Books donated to the library will be screened by Rabbi Levy and me. If we can use the items, we will add them to the collection. If not, books will be placed periodically on a table by the door for congregants to take if they choose. Books unclaimed after 6 weeks will be donated to the Friends of the Public Library for inclusion in their books sales. If a donor wants any books that we can’t use returned to him/her, the donor needs to make that clear at the time of the donation.

We invite all members of the congregation to look over the collection and check out materials. We’ll be operating on the honor system. On the clipboard sitting on the piano please write your name, title of the book, and the date you are taking the item out. You can keep it for 30 days. Please sign it back in when you return it, and leave it in the basket on the piano for me to re-shelve.

tired of paying too much in taxes? Here’s a way to lower your tax bill and also do a

mitzvah. Taxpayers are allowed to exclude from their gross income otherwise taxable distributions from their IRA that are paid directly to Congregation Beit Tikva. This distribution must meet the following requirements:1. The distribution must be from an

IRA.2. The IRA account holder must be at

least 70 ½ years old.3. The distribution must flow directly

from the IRA to Congregation Beit Tikva.

4. The distribution must be what would otherwise be considered a  taxable IRA withdrawal.

For someone who does not itemize their charitable donations, this would be extremely advantageous since the distribution in this manner would not be added to their taxable gross income.

For someone who does itemize their charitable donations, it would still be advantageous since the distribution in this manner would then have the effect of being 100% deductible from their income, an effect that may not occur by just making a regular donation to Congregation Beit Tikva. Also, a direct donation from the IRA would  count towards the Required Minimum Distribution amount mandated by the IRS for taxpayers over the age of 70 ½. You should contact your financial adviser for the

exact manner in which this is done, or feel free to call David Pollak at 505.982.1904 during work hours for any questions you may have.

information on Charitable Contributions from iRa’s

For years, Congregation Beit Tikva has collected clothes for the homeless at two of St. Elizabeth’s Shelters, The Men’s Emergency Shelter on Alarid

St. and the Casa Familia Shelter (women and families) on Berry St. We would like to expand our help to them by providing dinners.

Here are the possibilities:• Acommunitygroupcouldchoosetheday(s)todelivera dinner. Many of the groups presently deliver one day a month (i.e., the 1st Monday of the month), but the number of days is flexible. We could choose to provide the dinners to one of the shelters, to both, or alternate between the two. All food for the dinner must be delivered by 5:00pm. We could bring it all at once to the Shelters, or individuals responsible for different dishes could bring it during the day at their convenience. The “host” group for the dinner is welcome to join the Shelter guests for dinner, but it is not mandatory. No evening duties are required; shelter staff and guests take care of everything.• Anotheroptionisforsomegroupstobringbagsofgroceries. There’s always a need for items like milk, fresh fruits and vegetables. One group donates bags of enchiladas as a special treat!

Please consider helping with such an important project as we coordinate our efforts with the Shelters. Groups are asked to prepare for 35 people. We obviously need members who are willing to participate on a consistent basis. The food could be prepared at home or purchased from a store/restaurant. It’s not something that should be very time-consuming if we have people who are willing to donate and deliver.

Additionally, you may send a monetary donation that is comfortable for you. Make out your check to Congregation Beit Tikva, and mail it to the synagogue.

To help on either or both of those nights, or to contribute in any other way, please contact Sandy Levine at 505.466.4041 or email at [email protected].

Thanks to everyone!

Parking guidelines are a necessary part of our Congregation’s increased awareness for a vigilant

and proactive security policy. This policy enables Beit Tikva to tow or otherwise address vehicles parked on our lot under certain defined circumstances.

The parking lot at Beit Tikva is available to Congregation members, family, and friends. No permits or other identifying tags are required.

However, cars left unattended for an extended period of 3 hours or more (outside the time frame of a synagogue event or other active synagogue business) without notice to the Board and/or Administrator may be subject to towing. Vehicles parked suspiciously may also prompt an immediate call to police to investigate.

In the event that a Member (or member’s family or friend, through that Member) finds it necessary to leave a car in the parking lot for an extended period of 3 hours or more, outside the time frame of a Beit Tikva event or activity, they must do the following:

1. Notify any Board member or the Administrator that a car will be left in the parking lot. (Please provide

the make, color, and license plate number of the car in question.) The contacted Board member will make the Administrator and President aware of this information.Board members with key access to the building who need to leave cars for more than 3 hours during the day unattended (i.e. while not remaining at the synagogue) can instead leave a note on the Administrator’s office desk.2. We request that the owner also place a piece of paper on the driver’s side dashboard with the Member’s name clearly visible.

If notification is not made, the car may be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. A decision to tow requires approval by an Executive Committee member (the President, or any other Executive Committee member if the President is not available in a timely manner) PLUS an additional Board member or the Administrator.

Vehicles parked suspiciously may, however, prompt a call for police to investigate based on the judgment of an individual Board member or staff member.

This Policy has been in effect since January 1, 2016.

Brief looks will be taken at the lives of individuals who played key roles (heroes and troublemakers both) with their intrigues, challenges, triumphs…and debacles. Most of the maps are from Phil’s collection. Suggested donation is $12 at the door to support Congregation Beit tikva.  Brunch buffet will be available at 10:00am for an additional $5.
