A note from Mrs. Bernard

“Last week we read Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. For the next four weeks, students will be rotating through centers to make paper snowflakes, 3D Doodler snowflakes, research snow and snowflakes and roll and draw snow creatures. They are enjoying the activities that were paired with our reading of Snowflake Bentley.

I have also started something new for the 2019 new year. I will be reading a new chapter book each month. I will post the book I am currently reading in the library, on the signature section of my e-mails and on my website. This will help me be able to recommend books to students. In addition, once I’m done reading the book, I will share some details about the book along with a recommendation of who may enjoy read-ing it. Also, new this year is an area where students may share their recommenda-tions. I created this area because I wanted our students to see what their peers are reading and enjoying. I am excited to see students read my recommendations and their peer’s recommendations. This will give them even more resources in order to find books they will enjoy reading, which I’m hoping will enhance their love for reading. Please check out the pictures of our recommendation walls and students working in centers.

Here's a wonderful quote from the book I just finished: “Be Someone’s Hero” from One for the Murphys. This is a heart-wrenching and heart-warming story all in one about a young girl who is thrust into foster care. While there, she discovers a love she has never experienced before. It’s a tear-jerker but a fabulous read! I recom-mend this book for 4th and 5th graders. It deals with sensitive subjects and may be too much for younger readers.

As always, thank you for encouraging your child’s love of reading!”

STEM at Petty:

Students at Petty are on their way into their Trimester 2 units. Each unit begins with several weeks of activities/explorations. Over the last few weeks, students have been busy learning about the new con-cepts.

2nd Grade:

2nd Grade began their STEM focus for Trimester 2- Material Science: Properties of Matter.

Students are learning about the three common states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. 2nd graders are exploring how matter changes between states and how some changes are reversible and some are not.

2nd grade is gearing up to explore conductors/insulators by experimenting with hand-warmers and how they interact with different materials.

3rd Grade

3rd Grade started their Trimester 2 STEM unit- Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions.

3rd grade has been busy building simple machines. Students are exploring how simple machines can be helpful in many situations. For example: inclined planes (ramps) provide wheel chair accessibility.

4th Grade

4th grade is now working on their Trimester 2 unit- Input/Output: Computer Systems

In this unit, 4th grade began learning about the parts of a computing system: input, output, storage, memory, etc. Students are now learning about some of the commonly used codes (example: binary com-puter code).

5th grade

5th Grade has been exploring Robotics and Automation in the 2nd trimester.

Students completed a series of lessons where they constructed a robot test bed to explore different robotic components. They learned about motors and robotic sensors. 5th graders are now exploring au-tomation (remote controlled).
