Simply stated by George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.” From the beginning of this group’s existence in 1938 when things needed to get accomplished to allow everyone to enjoy the sport of skiing, the Bogus Basin Ski Club was there. The first rope tow was owned and operated by the club. The cost was $25 per year to be a member and have use of the rope tow. Now days, things have changed. We are still having fun and playing but we’re doing different things. Year-around activities that keep us like-minded folks together doing recreational activities that keep us young, like rafting, hiking, water skiing, and biking are what we do. The costs are very reasonable and sometimes ridiculously low. This is why being a member of this club has its privileges. We do a lot of fun activities at group rates. When did you ever get to going camping for a weekend for only $25 including two dinners? Or do a ski trip to Innsbruck, Austria for under $2,000? We offer many cool activities and parties that members of all ages get together a have a fun time.

There may be a misconception that we are an “old person club” – not true. We focus our activities at all ages and even have family functions. The club sponsors the Dotty Clark racing program at Bogus and would love to have the parents get involved. We are currently looking at fun fundraising opportunities to help the kids enjoy the program more. We really need some people that

From the PresidentThe year is off to a great start and there are lots of fun activities coming up for the summer, now that it has finally stopped raining, I think. You would think we lived in Seattle. Your board would like to make it a priority this coming year to concentrate on volunteerism and encourage our new members to get more involved. There are tons of things to be done, and often it ends up falling on the board members’ shoulders, because we think it is easier to do it ourselves rather than trying to find someone else to do it. But one thing I know for sure, if you are new to the club, the best way to get to know everybody and get the most out of the club is to jump in and volunteer. Besides it is fun!

The golf tournament at Terrace Lakes was great fun and the weather cooperated, more or less. At least it stopped raining long enough for us to golf. But the rain took its’ toll on the course. Just ask the other two members of our foursome and the group just ahead of us, who they saw do a complete wheelie in their golf cart, and not on purpose! More about this further into the Mogul but I wanted to say thanks to Marlene.

The road clean-up has been a long time community service event for the club but this was my first time participating. You have probably seen our name on a sign up on Bogus Basin Road. I have to say, we really need some younger people to volunteer for this. We do have members under 60, so how come the average age up there was over 60? I don’t want to make you feel guilty but yes I do. It didn’t take that much time and it was beautiful up there this time of year. Please consider it for next year. Thanks Jane.

Lots more coming this summer, both new and continuing events, like the Boise Rec-Fest, the campout at Donnelly, Shakespeare, and a very probable raft trip in Riggins and bike trek in New Meadows. Don’t let the last two scare you off. They won’t be hard core. Get involved, volunteer, or just attend and have fun!

Have I got a deal for you! Heard that before? Well, this deal is for real.

The Bogus Basin Ski Club will be holding their annual campout July 23-25 at the Willow Creek/SISCRA campground on Cascade Lake. What’s the deal? You can be part of this fun filled weekend for just $25 per person if you are an active member of the BBSC. The deal gets sweeter for one lucky winner. Entry the raffle drawing for the Idaho Botanical Garden event (read article on page 7). If you’re the lucky winner, you can pick up your bottle of wine Saturday night.

We’ve got many fun things planned, like water skiing, tubing, fishing, kayaking, hiking, pitching horse shoes, or just relaxing. It’s great fun too. If you were thinking of kayaking and you don’t have a boat, Alpenglow is offering half priced rentals for this weekend. You need to call ahead, 331-boat (2628) or go into the store at 2314 Bogus Basin Rd. Chuck is a great guy to know and he can help you pick out the right boat for you.

We usually have a fun sing along in the evenings around the campfire. If you’d like to bring a musical instrument (unamplified) please do so. There is no judging at this event.

The deal gets you two meals (no one goes hungy), Friday and Saturday night, use of the community kitchen and campground space for your RV or tent. Please bring a side dish to share and breakfast items that you wish to cook in the group kitchen.

Checks need to be mailed to Nancy Cenell, 7960 Stirrup Ave, Boise, ID 83709 by July 17. Please indicate if you will need an RV hookup or if you will be tent camping. This has proven to be a fun event for the club. We hope you have made plans to join us this year. Hope to see you there!

Annual Club CampoutJuly 23-25, 2010

Natalie Angell, Roger Becker and Janice Walker relax at the 2009 club campout.

want to embrace this worthwhile program and help make it better.

The club also has raised contributions and then matched them for the Scholar Dollar program. This is a program that provides financial assistance for those elementary age children that want to come to Bogus with their classmates and experience the winter fun. Many of these kids return to become season pass holders in the future.

So you see, the club is a vital part of our community and has been for over 70 years. We have tradition, community involvement, and have fun at whatever we do. Check out

the calendar of events in this issue. Find one or two that look interesting and get on board. There have been many friendships made through this little club and they make great skiing buddies too. The club invites you to be a part of all this. The cost of membership is only $20 a year. Those that become a member in June will get 16 months of membership at that price.

Now that you taken the time to read this, take action. There’s a river to be floated and bike trails to be ridden and we want you there. Become a member today.

Play more! Live better!

Richard Porter will be chairing a raft trip on the main Salmon River on August 7, 2010. We’ll meet in Riggins and start at Spring Bar, lunch will be served on a sandy beach, and we’ll get off the river at Old Lucille. There are many class 2 and 3 rapids on this stretch of the Salmon. It’s an exciting but relaxing trip with beautiful scenery. We have secured a good rate of $80 per member. If anyone would want to spend either Friday or Saturday night in Riggins (some of us are planning to) the motel rate is only $39 per night. Come on along and have a fun filled action packed experience this summer.

Mail your check to BBSC, P.O. Box 973 Boise, ID 83701. There are a limited number of spots so don’t delay, mail it in today.

It was a bright, beautiful, and semi-warm day June 5. All golfers were presented with a golf umbrella and a prize bag with all kinds of interesting stuff. The Terrace Lakes golf course was a bit soggy but actually in very good shape. The greens were very forgiving which promoted several cheers from the gallery. The umbrellas must have kept the rain away because it was sunny all day. The 25 members had a great day enjoying all the fun of losing balls and spinning in golf carts. Fred Uranga and wife Sue drove up to have lunch with all of us before the 2:30 PM shotgun start. Marlene and Roger Cloud did a fantastic job of organizing the raffle prizes. The grand prize was a night for two at the Grove Hotel and dinner at Emilio’s. Nancy Cenell had the winning ticket and was quite excited. I hope she can have half as much fun when she stays at the hotel.

The winning team with a score of 73 was Vince Zappy, Chris Stoeberl, Pam Fisher, and Hazel Haynes. Second place team had a 73 as well but one of their players was wearing a kilt that skewed the score. Bob Running was the big winner of men’s closest to the pin on #4 and #16 and the men’s long drive on #3. He was loaded with prizes. Julie Thomason had the closest to the pin on #4 while Joanne Thompson had the closest to the pin on #16 and the longest drive on #3. We found out that we really do have good golfers in the club. We were just wondering what happened to some of last years’ players.

The Antler Point cabin was terrific with lots of room for all. The dinner after the golf was something to behold. Delicious roast pork with salads, potatoes, and desserts was served. No one went hungry, even Clyde McNeil got enough but he really didn’t overplay his part. Everyone had a great time. You don’t want to miss out next year. Rumor has it, Speedy Peterson will be attending.

Special thanks to Roger Nayden for the Black Velvet and Svedka, Vince Zappy for the goodie bags, The Grove Hotel and Marlene’s son, and Andy Hollister at Terrace Lakes.

Well, we finally got it completed. And Mother Nature cooperated by giving a most perfect spring day! Many thanks to Rosie Rosco, Roger Becker Amy Hohnstein, Tim Flood, Ann Sabala, Tyler Wymond, Natalie Angell, Jane Gabbert, Cherry Woodbury, Fred Uranga, and Alicia Culbertson for their participation. Extra thanks to Fred Uranga, Ann Sabala, George and Ginny Medek, Richard Kunz, Barbara Spingla and Mike Bouton who showed up on the regularly scheduled day of May 15 along with some kids from the Dotty Clark Race Program. They cleaned the lower part of our road. The upper part still had snow on it. Ann Sabala and Fred Uranga showed up on June 12 as well. What gluttons for punishment! It seemed like Rosie got an especially trashy section of road as she had a huge bag full of garbage. She wants to know where all the young people were. Most of the people out there were in their 50s, 60s and 70s! Thanks again guys! All your names will be placed in the volunteer drawing.

Living in Idaho gives us an opportunity to play in all four seasons. Now that ski season is over, the snow melts and guess where it goes: into the lakes and rivers for us all to enjoy in a different form.

Kayaking and rafting is great fun in what is shaping up to be a hot summer. Mountain biking, hiking, golf, and other outdoor sports lend themselves well to paddling. Paddling allows you to cool down after working hard. Rafting the day and multi day runs in and around the state allow you to explore different areas that you would not get a chance to see otherwise. Fishing, bird watching, and exercise are more reasons to get out and enjoy paddling.

Local runs such as the Boise River are great for after work play dates on the Barber Park stretch. You’ve tubed it, try kayaking it! What happens to the Boise River below Americana? Fortunately, since most people don’t think about it, it stays uncrowded. For a unique couple of hours, float the stretch from Glenwood to Eagle Road and take out at Bardenay in Eagle for dinner. You’d never know you’re in Garden City and Eagle. Another great local run is the Payette River from Horseshoe Bend to Montour. It is a beautiful 3-5 hour float with a few great stops for a picnic lunch. The Middle Fork of the Payette is a scenic float in the mountains not too far down the road.

Besides the kayak or raft, a PFD (lifejacket), a hat, sunscreen, and a paddle are some of the necessities to paddle. As you get more into the sport, your sense of adventure will lead to a new list of items to make your excursions even more fun. Camping out of a kayak is half way between car camping and

backpacking. There is typically room to live deluxe!

There are a ton of great slow moving rivers not to mention lakes and ponds that are easy, and suitable for just about anyone. There are many great resources online for tips on where to go and how to do it. Stop by your local shop like Alpenglow Mountainsport and talk with some of our knowledgeable staff about some of the great floats and trips you can take with friends and families as well as some of the great boats and gear available to you. They have guide books, how-to DVDs as well as all of the accessories to enjoy the outdoors including kayak and raft rentals. Alpenglow also hosts periodic kayak demo days to let you try before you buy! Call them @ 331-BOAT or online at www.alpenglowidaho.com.

We are easy to find as you’ve been in numerous times. We share the building with McU Sports on Bogus Basin Rd. Boise’s only year around ski shop. P.S. McU’s has been receiving extra inventory that we are putting on clearance. It’s a great time to pick up a new, discounted set of skis. Enjoy your summer!
