As I flip over my desk calendar to February, I can’t help but feel giddy at the promise of love and romance soon to fill the air. All of a sudden, I’m humming “All you need is love”.
For this month of love, AWSUM will be jumping on the romantic bandwagon. Get ready for us to spoil you with a delicious dessert recipe from AWSUM foodie Jenny Morris, some AWSUM love puzzles and word games, as well as a few fashion tips that show just how much we love denim. ‘n Nuwe Tandarts het so pas haar deure in Wellington oopgemaak. Alhoewel ‘n boorling van die Noord-Kaap, het Tineke reeds goed kennisgemaak met die Drakenstein gebied as ‘n leerder van Hoërskool Gimnasium.
Na skool het sy eers ‘n Toerismediploma verwerf, en daarna vir twee jaar as stoelassistent in Engeland gewerk. Nadat sy teruggekeer het na Suid-Afrika het sy haar diploma in Mondhigiëne voltooi. Sy het vir ‘n paar jaar as Mondhigiënis gepraktiseer, maar het besef haar passie en droom is om as Tandarts te kwalifiseer. Dit het bewaarheid geword en sy het ook haar Nagraadse Diploma in Kaak-, Gesig en Mond- Radiologie voltooi.
“Dit is my absolute passie om met mense te werk en te kan help waar ek kan. Ek het die voorreg gekry om my praktyk te vestig by Medicross in Wellington en ek sien nog baie jare van voorspoed en geluk wat hier voorlê.

For the chocolate meringue• 8 egg whites• pinch of salt• 450g castor sugar• 10ml vanilla extract• 20ml white vinegar• 40ml corn flour, sifted• 30ml cocoa powder, siftedFor the layers• 180g good quality dark
chocolate• 200ml cream (to melt with
chocolate)*• 10ml vanilla extract or seed
scrapings of 1 vanilla pod• 300ml cream, whipped until just
stiff*• fresh cherries or strawberries for
garnishing• grated chocolate for garnishing
(optional)• *this recipe uses 500ml cream
in total
To make the meringuePreheat the oven to 140˚C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
Whisk the egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually mix in the castor sugar, one spoon at a time. Whisk the mixture until glossy and thick.
Use a metal spoon to fold in the vanilla, vinegar, corn flour and cocoa powder lightly but thoroughly.
Spoon the meringue mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Make four circles, each with a 20cm diameter, with fairly thick bases and raised edges.
Bake for one hour then turn off the heat. Leave the meringue in the oven until completely cold (preferably overnight).
To make the fillingPlace the chocolate and 200ml cream in a double-boiler and stir over low heat until the chocolate is just melted. Leave to cool completely.
Stir the vanilla into the 300ml whipped cream.
Place a meringue disc on a serving platter, spread with a quarter of the chocolate mixture followed by a quarter of the whipped cream. Top with another meringue disc and repeat three more times. Garnish the final layer of chocolate and cream with fresh fruit and the optional grated chocolate.
Coffee and hazelnut alternativeOmit the cocoa powder from the
meringue recipe and add 20ml instant espresso coffee powder to the mixture instead. Once the meringue discs are baked, layer them with whipped cream and caramel-dipped hazelnuts.
Note: For one large Pavlova, halve the ingredients for the chocolate meringue. Top with the melted chocolate and cream (optional).

We’re big fans of 2014’s Samsung Galaxy S5, the LG G3, the Sony Xperia Z3 and the iPhone 6, but we’re even more impressed by what’s to come this year. Here we reveal the 6 smartphones to be most excited about in 2015.
1. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6If you’re a Samsung fan but would like a phone rather than a phablet, the S6 will be just what you’re looking for. We should see this phone unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event on 1 March 2015.
2. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 MINIThe Samsung Galaxy S6 mini is likely to arrive a few months after the standard Samsung Galaxy S6 – perhaps late June or early August – and will be a more compact version of its big brother, with a slightly slimmed-down spec.
3. SAMSUNG GALAXY A7Samsung has confirmed its Galaxy A7, a gorgeous phablet with a 6.3mm unibody metal chassis, a 5.5in Super AMOLED screen and 64-bit-
octa-core processor. The A7 is not yet for sale, but will come in both single and dual-sim variants.
4. HTC ONE M9We are massive fans of the HTC One M8, which means we just can’t wait for a better version of this phone. The HTC One M9 is expected to follow the HTC Desire Eye with a super-selfie 13MP front camera and 20MP rear camera.
5. HTC ONE M9 PLUS / PRIME / ULTRAWe’ll most likely have to wait
until September to get our hands on this version. If the
rumours are true, the HTC One M9 Ultra / Plus will pack a
2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB RAM. It will
also feature a fingerprint scanner.
6. SONY XPERIA Z4Sony updates its flagship handsets every six months, so with the Sony Xperia Z3 having been released in September 2014, we can expect the Xperia Z4 in March at IFA (2 to 5 March 2015). There is speculation that the Sony Xperia Z4 will tie in with the new James Bond movie, with actor Daniel Craig and
director Sam Mendes expected to be involved in the design.

PAARLMUSEUM EN TAALMONUMENTOp Dinsdag, 10 Februarie het die dames van HMS Paarl Valentynsdag in styl gevier onder die Paarlse sterrehemel. Ouers is deur ons laerskoolleerders met optredes vermaak. Heerlike eetgoed was beskikbaar en daar is lekker gesokkie en gekuier onder ons eikebome!
Die interkleure swemgala, waartydens die hele skool aan verskeie items deelgeneem het, het op 28 Januarie plaasgevind. Erna-Mari Conradie in gr. 2 het
2 o/8 rekords verberter in die vryslag en rugslag. Lara Botha het die o/9 vlinderslag rekord verbeter. Baie geluk julle – ons is trots op julle!
Die gr.7 Pa- en- dogter- kamp het die naweek van 30 Januarie – 1 Februarie plaasgevind by Tietiesbaai aan die Weskus. Dankie aan al die pappas wat kom saam kamp het en onvergeetlike herinneringe help skep het!
Die gr. 4-klas het op Donderdag, 5 Februarie 2015 ‘n uitstappie na die Paarlmuseum en Taalmonument gehad. Hulle leer hierdie kwartaal van ons plaaslike geskiedenis in Sosiale Wetenskappe en het die uitstappie baie geniet. Hulle het ongelooflik baie geleer van Paarl se geskiedenis asook die geskiedenis van Afrikaans.
Volgens HMS Paarl tradisie het die gr. 12 “Milady’s” saam met die gr. 1’s geswem. Hier is Milady Alyssa Rademan (gr. 12) saam met Carli Stephanie Muller (gr. 1) en Zane Cloete (gr. 1) saam met Milady Anje du Plessis (gr. 12).

KASKARNAVALDit is binnekort weer tyd vir ons baie lekker jaarlikse kaskarresies. Die kinders geniet dié dag vreeslik en sien baie daarna uit. Hierdie jaar beoog ons om sommer ‘n lekker karnaval saam met die resies op Saterdag, 28 Februarie 2015 te hou. Daar gaan aktiwiteite soos ‘n “Car-
boot Sale”, waterwurms, springkastele, verskeie kompetisies, heelwat buite-uitstallers, ou karre, nuwe karre en ‘n vertoning van so om-en-by ‘n uur lank om die hele gesin te vermaak, wees. Daal sal ook genoeg wees om die innerlike te versterk. Die foto’s dui aan hoe die kinders dit verlede jaar geniet het.
GRAAD 2 UITSTAPPIEGr 2 het die groentemark besoek en meer oor groente en vrugte geleer. Hulle het ook ‘n kansie gehad om van die vrugte te koop en daarna heerlik daaraan te smul.
ATLETIEKDie volgende atlete van WAJ is in die Paarl-atletiekspan opgeneem wat op Saterdag 14 Februarie aan die Boland Sentraalkampioenskappe deelgeneem het.

In die 14-15 jaar ouderdoms-groep is al vier die aflosse ge-wen deur ‘n span wat uitsluitlik uit Boishaaiers bestaan, naamlik Werner Strauss, Pierre Pretorius, Andre van Huyssteen en Alex van Rooijen (ook vol-gorde van foto). Drie swemmers het hierdie jaar die onderskeiding behaal deur vir die Nasionale Jeugkampioen-skappe te kwalifiseer, naamlik Darren Minnies, Pierre Pretorius en Andre van Huyssteen. Verder kwalifiseer Andre van Huyssteen in die 100m Vlinder-slag om in April 2015 aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Senior Swem-kampioenskappe in Durban deel te neem.

KLEURE SWEMGALA– ALICE BREEK REKORDS! Die Interkleure swemgala het plaasgevind op 28 Januarie waartydens alle leerders van gr.1 tot gr. 12 deelgeneem het aan verskeie items. Een van die uitblinkers van die dag was Alice van der Merwe. Sy het onderskeidelik in vier items rekords verbeter naamlik: 100m Individuele medley ope, 100m vryslag ope, o/14 50m rugslag en vryslag. Een van hierdie rekords, die 100m vryslag ope, staan al van 1995 af. Sy het die tyd verbeter na 1:03.96 (25m swembad). Ons is SO trots op haar!

Vier van HMS Paarl se leerders gaan op 26 Februarie – 1 Maart deelnaam aan die SA Onderwaterhokkie Kampioenskappe Toernooi in Durban. Hulle is Berle Edwards (o/19), Cara Edwards (o/15), Joanne Conradie (o/15) en Martine du Preez (0/15). Baie sterkte julle!
From 10 – 14 December 2014 the following swimmers from Boys High took part in the Western Province Swimming Championships in Belville:Gerhard Strauss, Darren Minnies, Dehan van Dyk, Pierre Pretorius, Andre van Huyssteen, Wynand Viljoen, Dewan Bubb, Gerhard Strauss, Alex van Rooijen, Christian Slabbert and Bob Fick.
Unfortunately, Walter Travers could not take part this year because of an injury. The hours and hours of training in the pool paid off and all the boys swam personal best times. Several boys swam in final events. This is a real achievement, as it means that these boys are part of the top 8 swimmers in their events in the whole of the Western Cape Province.
During the past December Holiday, 5 of our BHS boys made us all very proud as part of the victorious Boland u/15 team which ended 3rd overall out of the 15 National provinces and Namibia. They played 6 matches, won 5 and lost 1, in all 3 formats of the game (T20, 50 overs and Timed Cricket), beat Orange Freestate, Easterns, Kwazulu Natal Inland, Mpumalanga and Border, they lost to Eastern Province in the “semi Final”.

Die 12 MEJ. LA ROCHELLE finaliste wat om die titel op 31 Maart gaan meeding is: Two learners of La Rochelle Girls’ High
School, Megann Ferreira (Grade 12) and Jordan Willett (Grade 10) took part in the National Schools’ Debating Championships in Stellenbosch from 13 to 18 December last year. Jordan, who was a member of Western Cape Junior A Team, was chosen to be a trialist for the Junior National Team and ranked 3rd out of 52 Junior speakers at the tournament.Megann’s team (Western Cape Senior B) ranked 4th overall and placed first amongst their fellow Western Cape delegations. She was also individually chosen to be a trialist (which will take place from 4 March in Johannesburg) for the Senior National Team and was ranked 27th out of over 100 speakers.Both Larries will receive additional training from the national coaches before trials take place, which will determine selection for the South African Teams competing in the World Debating Championships.The Guest Speaker at La

Larrie Junior World Champion in the 400mH, Gézelle Magerman, has been included in the Squad of 96 athletes (54 girls and 42 boys) as announced by Athletics South Africa. The athletes are currently being monitored by the ASA National Selectors in preparation for the 2015 CAA African Championships, which will take place in Addis Ababa from 5-8 March 2015.At a gala function of the DISCOVERY SPORTS INDUSTRY AWARDS in Johan-nesburg, Gézelle received the DISCOVERY RISING STAR OF 2014 Award.

INTERSKOLE TEEN OAKDALETENNIS Phil Swart (Oakdale) en Roux Conradie (Boland). Boland het Oakdale goed die stryd aangesê op die tennisbaan. Boland wen 20 wedstryde teenoor Oakdale wat 16 gewen het.
KRIEKET Luke Philander, kaptein van die Eerste span wat Oakdale met 163 lopies geklop het. Boland se tweede span klop hul met 117 lopies en derde span met 7 paaltjies.
ATLETIEKDit was ʼn naelbytstryd tydens die jaarlikse interskole-atletiek teen Oakdale. Die Bolanders het hul puik van hul taak gekwyt en nooit teruggestaan teen Oakdale nie. Oakdale het die byeenkoms gewen.

AKADEMIESE GALA-AANDTydens die akademiese gala-aand is 2014 se top-presteerders in elke graad vereer vir hul akademiese prestasies deur die jaar.
NUWE BOLANDERSOns nuwe Graad 8-leerders het die eerste week van skool ʼn heerlike verwelkomingsprogram deurleef. Na ons tradisionele klokseremonie is hulle nou volwaardige Bolanders waarop ons baie trots is.

AGNES PAUW-TENNISTOERNOOI Hoërskool Dirkie Uys het weer vanjaar die Agnes Pauw-tennistoernooi vir dogters aangebied. Hul dogterspan eindig vierde in die kompetisie. Paarl Gimnasium was die wenners, met Hoërskool Stellenbosch en Paarl Girls High tweede en derde.
