the day off, as our government has decided to set 24 September aside for all South

Africans to celebrate our rich heritage.

While browsing the internet, I came across braai.com,

whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day. These guys have very helpfully shared a list of braai words – a braai dictionary –to help you sound cool around the fire:• aai: A braai in the summer, as in a braai without the brrr.• abbraaiviation: A very short braai.• abraaimowitz: A Jewish braai.• asskebab: Someone who makes a fool of him/herself at a braai.• aweh: A word used to express

a positive attitude – “hello”, “yes”, “good”.• baas: Afrikaans for boss, or the guy holding the braai tongs.• bak: A dish made from aluminium or stainless steel, used to store meat before and after it is braaied. Some braaiers use a glass bak, but there is a safety concern with this. If you’re eating straight off the braai, a bak is unnecessary.• barbie: Australian slang for barbeque. YOU WILL NEED:• Ceramic or porcelain crockery• Stamp• Ink and pad• CPG (Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass) Podge

The crockery used in this DIY was bought on sale for next to nothing and combined with a favourite

crown stamp, they are going to revolutionize our dinner parties!

1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it

around while applying pressure on it. On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.

3. After it has dried properly you can

glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully. We were truly thrilled by the final result – now you give it a go!

A cold or flu is a viral infection. An easy way to distinguish between them: with a cold you’ll have symptoms above the neck, i.e. throat/nose congestion, sore throat, dry cough, watery eyes and headache. With the flu, you’ll have symptoms below the neck: tiredness, achy muscles/joints, wet cough and fever.

Worst case scenario when trainng with a cold/flu, is that the heart and surrounding tissues may become infected with virus particles. This can lead lethal heart rhythm abnormalities and the heart not pumping effectively. It can also lead to heat injury, since your body’s temperature will raise further with exercise.

Strategies to reduce the risk of becoming infected:• Space vigorous exercises a few days apart• Eat a well-balanced diet• Drink pleanty of water• Avoid overtraining • Go to bed early and get enough sleep.

If you do choose to exercise while sick with above-the-neck symptoms, it is important to reduce the length and intensity of your exercise routine. Especially intensity has been shown to be a greater risk for obtaining an infection – the higher the intensity, the higher the risk. Walk for 15 minutes instead of running for 30, do 1 set of an exercise instead of 3, or reduce the overall intensity by 50%. Rest if you have syptoms below the neck.

How and when to start training again:Remember a cold usually last about 7 to 10 days, but the flu can persist 2 to 3 week, even longer. When the symptoms have cleared don’t start the training where you ending before you got sick. Start at 75% intensity and gradually increase over the first week or so. If you start too soon or at too high intensity, the recovery period will just be that

much longer.

Remember the fit people recover quicker from illness and experience milder symptoms than couch patotoes, and moderate exercise has been linked to a healthier immune system. So, go outside, have fun and be active – when your body is telling you to do so.

Oor die laaste 15 jaar in praktyk het ek baie blootstelling gehad aan beserings in kontaksport, veral rugby, by jong volwassenes en die hantering hiervan.

Die tipe beserings wat opgedoen kan word, is tweërlei. Een wat die spiere en ligamente behels, sogenoemde sagteweefsel beserings, en die ander wat benige beserings behels.

Die aard en behandeling van beserings is afhanklik van hoe ernstig dit is en ook in watter gedeelte van die liggaam dit geleë is. Daar is verskillende opsies van behandeling, wat kan insluit konserwatiewe behandeling met rus, fisioterapie en rehabilitasie of behandeling wat chirurgiese ingrepe behels. Die tydperk wat dit neem om te herstel na die besering wissel dus ook, na aanleiding van die aard van die besering en dit is baie moeilik om te veralgemeen hoe dit hanteer moet word.

Die algemene beginsels wat geld by die beserings is die volgende:1. Sover as moontlik moet beserings voorkom word, deurdat kinders so fiks as moontlik moet wees en gekondisioneer word in die af seisoen.

2. Indien ‘n kind ‘n besering het, wat die aard daarvan ookal is, word dit nie aanbeveel dat hy terugkeer na die sportveld tot hy nie volledige pynvrye omvang van beweging van daardie area het en normaal aktiwiteit het sonder enige pyn en ongemak nie. Dit geld vir sagteweefsel en benige beserings. Daar het oor die laaste aantal jare ongelukkig ‘n praktyk ontstaan waar sommige van hierdie kinders pynpille ontvang of waar die besering verdoof word sodat hy kan terugkeer na die sportveld toe. Dit lei daartoe dat die herstelperiode van die besering verleng word en dat die kind later ‘n kroniese besering het wat dalk chirurgie kan benodig. 3. Oor die algemeen is dit belangrik dat indien daar enige chirurgie gedoen word, die kind eers ‘n volledige reeks rehabilitasie oefeninge voltooi voor hy weer terugkeer na sy kontaksport toe. 4. Dit is ook belangrik dat hierdie beserings op die veld korrek hanteer word en dat hulle so gou as moontlik ‘n mediese dokter konsulteer om uitsluitsel te kry oor die erns van die besering.

WHAT TO DO:Preheat the oven to 200◦C. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and then roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out four discs with an 11.5cm round pastry cutter. Using a sharp knife, lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm from the edge, taking care not to cut through the pastry. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and place the pastry discs on to a non-stick baking sheet. Poke a few holes in the pastry and place in the oven on the middle shelf. Bake for 20 minutes or

until golden. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool.

juice together in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Pour this vinaigrette over the baby rocket and toss. To serve, place individual tarts on plates and top with rocket and Parmesan shavings.

Die Gr 6 klas was op ‘n leierskapskamp. ‘n Heerlike twee dae van lekker aktiwiteite, kosmaak en waardevolle advies het die graad 6’e ingewag op Braam en Bokkie se plaas by Rawsonville. Saam het ons die hindernisbaan voltooi, potjiekos gemaak en baie lekker geleer van integriteit, respek, nederigheid en leierskap!

‘n Groot eer het die Senior- en Juniorkoor van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl te beurt geval! Hulle is genooi om saam met die Idols-wenner, Elvis Blue, op te tree. The performance will take place on 24 September at Noord-Eind at 19:00. Kaartjies kan

HokkietoerOns twee senior-hokkiespanne het hulle jaarlikse hokkietoer `n hoë noot begin toe hulle teen CPM wedstryde gespeel het. Die dogters het 10-0 gewen en die seuns het 3 elk gelykop gespeel. Die naweek was gevul met heerlike aktiwiteite. Hulle het die Vismuseum in Velddrif besoek asook in Bokkomlaan gaan stap waar hulle ook lekker bokkoms geproe het. Daar is heerlik op die strand gespeel en `n rondte mini-gholf was ook op die spyskaart. Hulle het die toer op ̀ n smaaklike manier afgesluit deur `n lekker ontbyt by Spur te geniet. Dankie aan die kinders vir hulle goeie gedrag. Nogmaals dankie aan juffroue Margaux, Sune, Sandra en Letitia wat die leerders op die toer vergesel het.

Hokkieborg: Die hokkiespan spog met splinternuwe wedstrydhemde. Baie dankie aan Isipani en JVZ-Construction wat ons seniospanne geborg het. Hulle lyk pragtig op en van die veld af in hulle nuwe drag en dra dit met trots.

Hugenoters het weereens geld inge-samel vir liefdadigheid deur Loslitdag te ondersteun. Geld wat ingesamel word is ten bate van Sunfield Homes in Wellington.

Goggagrot het hul jaarlikse ouma-en oupa oggend gehou. Die uiters suksesvolle oggend is afgeskop met ‘n tee in die “groot saal” waarna die oupa’s en ouma’s, tot groot vermaak van die “gogga’s” aan ‘n aktiwiteit in die klaskamer gewerk het.

Naoko, ‘n Goggagrot-ouer, het op Woensdag 27 Augustus mense geleer om california- en handrolls te maak en wat die geheim van ryskook is. Die geleentheid is by Casa Bella gehou en die fondse was ten bate van die badkamer-projek.

Die graad 1’s het aartappelmonsters gemaak. Nou wag almal om te sien of hulle hare gaan “groei”…

Dit is nou al ‘n tradisie dat die “baba-blackies” van Hugenote Laerskool by die Hugenote Hoërskool se Big Brag ‘n item lewer. Vanjaar het die graad 2’s se weergawe van die“Blackie Bom” die Hoërskool-leerlinge op hul voete gehad. Hier is ons “dirigente” vir die geleentheid.

Baie dankie aan Pick ‘n Pay Wellington wat ons hoofborg was vir die dag, aan elke opvoeder, ouer en sameroepster wat gehelp het om van 2014 se Kermis ‘n groot sukses te maak!! Markus Groenewald het met die eerste prys weggestap in die gelukkige trekking, Pieter van Schalkwyk en Gina Thorpe was ook pryswenners.

Mev Hester Smit (92) het die graad 3’s kom besoek. Sy het hulle kom vertel oor hoe dinge in toeka se tyd gedoen is.

Die Larries het hulle talente ingespan vir ’n talentaand waar hulle die res van die skool vermaak het met danse, sangitems en monoloë. Hier is werklik talentvolle meisies.

Gr 1 en 2 het onlangs die Artscape besoek. Hulle het dit baie geniet. Lees wat Kendra van die uitstappie skryf.

Gabrielle Witbooi, Graad 3, is aange-wys as die Beste Junior Dogter vir Barok-voordrag in klavier, tydens die pas afgelope Paarl Vallei Eisteddfod. Geluk Gabrielle. ‘n Groot prestasie!

Congratulations to our junior choir who achieved Cum Laude and our senior choir who attained Gold+. We are very proud of these results and want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Theron and Mrs Gildenhuys for all their hard work.

Three of our piano learners participated in the Stellenbosch University Conserve Eisteddfod on Saturday, 30th August 2014 where they performed exceptionally well.

Gézelle Magerman van die Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle het die goue medalje in die 400m vir Suid-Afrika by die 2014 Jeug Olimpiese Spele in Nanjing, China gewen. Haar blitsige tyd van 57.91 is ‘n nuwe Suid-Afrikaanse rekord en die tweede vinnigste tyd in die wêreld hierdie jaar. Die Larries het haar wedlope op die groot skerm in die Skoolsaal meegemaak en met haar terugkeer, is sy op die Kaapstadse lughawe deur die Larries verwelkom. ‘n Spesiale Saalbyeenkoms is vir ons SA trots gehou.

Die volgende leerders van die Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle het aan die Wêreldkennis-Olimpiade deelgeneem en sertifikate ontvang:

I had the honour of representing South Africa at the annual United Space School (USS) in Houston, Texas. It was a wonderful chance to meet people from 23 different countries around the world, making friends and working hard. It was an experience that I will never forget. I had the chance to learn about the cultures of all the individuals that were part of the USS. We worked together sharing ideas from all over the world. I also had the honour of meeting astronauts as well as specialists in their individual fields. I am grateful for this experience and if the chance arises I would do it again.

Jaarlikse Style EventOp 2 September het Hoër Jongenskool Paarl se jaarlikse Style Event plaasgevind – die glansgeleentheid waar daar meegeding word om die gesogte titel van Meneer HJS. Beoordelaars het die internasionale modelle Michelle Jansen en Wade Cohen ingesluit, asook Colette Benjamin van Flash of Madness Photography, Luzanne Heunis (Mevrou Eaglevlei 2014) en die huidige Meneer Wes-Kaap, Frank Swanepoel. Alex Sideratos is aangewys as wenner, met Pieter Ruthven as Meneer Persoonlikheid, Tristan van den Berg as 1ste prins en Tristin

Solomon as 2de prins. On 2 September Paarl Boys’ High hosted the yearly Style Event – a prestigious occasion where young men compete for the coveted title of Mr Style. Adjudicators included the international models Michelle Jansen and Wade Cohen, as well as Colette Benjamin of Flash of Madness Photography, Luzanne Heunis (Mrs Eaglevlei 2014) and the current Mr Western Cape, Frank Swanepoel. Alex Sideratos triumphed, with Pieter Ruthven as Mr Personality, Tristan van den Berg as 1st runner up and Tristin Solomon 2nd runner up.

Leerders presteer by Landswye ATKV-DebatTwee leerders van die Hoër Meisieskool Paarl, Jeanette Naudè (Gr. 12) en Carli van Wyk (Gr. 11) het die aan die finaal van die ATKV- Debatskompetisie in Noordwesprovinsie deelgeneem. Vier senior spanne van die Wes-Kaap het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem.Hulle het gewen teen Oranje Meisieskool en was die enigste senior span van die Wes- Kaap wat gewen het. Die onderwerp was: “Die voorgestelde diensjaar vir graduandi sal Suid-Afrika tot voordeel strek.” Landswyd het 559 spanne gedurende 2014 deelgeneem en slegs die top 14 het aan die finaal by Buffelspoort deelgeneem. Debatvoering is ‘n vaardigheid wat hierdie twee dames lewenslank gaan beoefen.

SRC for 2015 SA Wiskunde Span

Die orkes van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl behaal ‘n Cum Laude toekenning tydens die Paarl Vallei Eisteddfod. Die beoordelares was Pamela Kierman van Universiteit van Stellenbosch.

Ses Leerders van die Eerste tennisspan van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl het vanaf 14-17 Augustus aan die elfde Marilie Moolman Tennistoernooi in Cradock deelgeneem. Die toernooi is een van die gewildste tennistoernooie vir tennisskole in Suid-Afrika en word aangebied deur Hoërskool Cradock. Daar het 14 skole deelgeneem. HMS het ‘n totaal van ses wedstryde gespeel waarvan hulle drie wedstryde gewen het, teen Hoërskool Despatch (27-0); Hoërskool Outeniqua (24 -3) en Hoërskool Cradock (21-6).

Paarl Girls’ High School’s annual Prestige Music Concert took place on 26 and 28 August. It was an evening filled with world class music. Professional musicians and alumni supplemented the school orchestra along with a Mass Choir consisting of Paarl Girls’ High’s choir; the choir of Paarl Boys’ High, the senior choir of Frank Pietersen Music Centre and the Winelands Chamber Choir. Soloists who sang during the performance of Beethoven’s Corale Phantasy included Wyno Simes (Bass), Andrè Serfontein (Tenor), Cleo Kirsch (Soprano 1), Natalie Canipe (Soprano 2) and Marisa Truter (Alto). It was truly an evening to remember!

These learners have been elected as the Student Representative Council for 2015. Congratulations to all of you. We know you are going to be excellent leaders.

Francesca Visagé en Tamsin Thoresen is gekies om as deelvan ‘n Bolandspan aan die SAMTC (Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde Spankompetisie, voormalig bekend as Interprovinsiale Wiskunde-Olimpiade) deel te neem. Die SAMTC sal op Saterdag 13 September plaasvind. Baie sterkte julle!

Perdry WP UithouritWJ van Zyl (GR 9) het 1-3 Julie 2014 aan die Erasa Nasionale Kampioenskappe deelgeneem te Fauresmith. Vrolik by die spelfees ATKV- DebatsbeoordelaarsMnr Dumas het onlangs in Buffelsfontein saam met mnr W du Plessis dr P Moller opgetree as ATKV- Debatsbeoordelaars. Humor in die Letterkunde Professor W van Zyl het onlans die lagspiere gekielie toe hy by die Marie Luttig Gedenklesing opgetree het. Veral interessant was toe hy vertel van die volksmoord op die inheemse volke en hoe die digters dit aan die wereld vertel het. Wie kan dan vergeet van die humor in ons eie Kaapse gedigte Advice from above en Ek is oek important. “Ek het gedink die professor sal droog, wees maar heng die man is ‘n goeie leser.”
