FASHION:

The year is now thoroughly under way and even though the heat is still with us, schools have already had amazing sports events, as witnessed by the school news

Decorate with pallets & glass jars

Get into the habit of looking at pallets and other materials with new eyes. When one goes on a site like Pinterest, one often wonders ‘why didn’t I think of that?’. Very simple ideas are very effective, as can be seen in these few samples of using pallets and things from nature, like wild flowers and sea sand. These things cost nothing and add a rustic, down-to-earth feeling to any home.

Wall vasesCreate individual wall vases with old, weathered pallets, mason jars and clamps. Thess wall décor ideas are perfect examples of how to use ordinary stuff in very creative and beautiful ways.

Pallets are one of the biggest trends in upcycling materials for décor purposes. The creative possibilities

of creating beautiful pieces with pallets are almost endless, not to mention budget friendly.

What to wear now

KINDAYup! It’s a riot of retro as the

swinging seventies make a

big comeback says Fashion Editor

Pepe Sofianos. Can you dig it?

Pastel perfection

Seventies style --- minis and flares, super

chunky platforms, fringes and cropped tops

defined the girls while the guys lived in ripped

denims, faded T’s and super sneakers. Think about

it --- was that your folks, back then?

Anything goes just so long as it’s fun and laidback.

Celebs everywhere are looking like hippies.

So come on and join the 70s revival.Pepe Says

Top up your wardrobe

with sleeveless jumpers,

metallics, zany prints,

bodysuits, cropped tops and

holey crochet.

#MUST-HAVE MAKEUP

Hey guys --- get the cool dude look in faded denims,

T’s and sneakers like top Brit boy band, The Vamps.

There’s so much going on with the 70s vibe that when it comes to makeup you want to play it down. Pastel hues (think apricot, pink, grey, vanilla) are complemented by rich browns and are smoking hot on all skin tones. The Contouring Set is perfect for sculpting those Boho cheekbones. Check out how everyone’s favourite Hollywood hottie, Selena Gomes, has got it sorted. You can create her look with the Happy Girls Are Pretty range from Essence, exclusive to Clicks. Prices from R34.95 to R67.50. Go on, be happy, look pretty!

Aly Michalka, Disney Channel star, looks kinda groovy with her daisy hair band.

Vanessa Hudgens has a trendy take on the 70s scene with her sleeveless Bardot sweater and floral skater skirt.

Top of the crops --- Ashley Tisdale shows off her toned tum in a cropped top, 70s flared pants and mirrored aviators.

Daisy chain headband, R39.99, Mr Price.

Guys checked shirt, R249, Soda Bloc.

Denim dungaree skirt, R299.99 and off-the-shoulder

bodysuit, R99.99, both Legit.

Macramé tunic top, R499, Truworths.

Missoni print tube

skirt, R190, Truworths

and leather clog sandals,

R219.99, Fashion Express.

Guys Chukka trainers, R229,

Soda Bloc.

Monday, 15 February was International Childhood Cancer Day. To help play your part in supporting children with cancer and their families, the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, which provides nationwide physical and psychosocial support to children with cancer, is making it that much easier with its CHOC-olate loyalty programme. For a minimum monthly contribu-tion, members gain access to an array of benefits including 2-for-1 movie tickets nationwide, 2-for-1 dining at over 750 restaurants across the country, 2-for-1 beauty treatments at over 750 service providers, and 2-for-1 tickets from Computicket outlets, up to the value of

R150 each. Benefits can be redeemed on holiday or travel, with venues throughout the country. Fully utilised benefits would be to the value of more than R3 000 a month. Of the minimum contribution, over 50% goes to CHOC and the remainder goes towards the benefit costs. If a member opts to increase the donation portion, then the addition goes entirely to CHOC.

CHOC-olate will help ensure that CHOC expands services in line with the organisation’s growing number of beneficiaries. Without their holistic support, many children would not be able to access or adhere to treatment, which can last up to three years.

Help support children with cancer through CHOC-olateDid you know that every

three minutes, somewhere in the world a family hears the devastating news that their child has been diagnosed

with cancer? According to the American Childhood Cancer Organisation, globally more than 250 000 children are

diagnosed with cancer each year. Fortunately, through the advances made in treatment,

childhood cancer is largely curable.

Exercise helps children maintain a healthy weightChildhood obesity is becoming one of the biggest health issues facing our generation. And since obesity is a direct trigger for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, it’s crucial for children to maintain a healthy weight.

Exercise builds strong muscles and bonesThe human body builds its bones during childhood (before the teen years). That means childhood is the optimal time to build bone density through exercise (especially body weight exercise). And strong muscles aren’t just something adults should have! Kids benefit from having strong muscles too – they’re less likely to suffer injuries while they conquer the playground.

Exercise boosts mood and improves concentrationKids need to be able to concentrate to learn. And they learn better and learn more when they’re happy. Exercise causes the body to release endorphins – natural happy hormones and tranquilisers. Not only do these leave kids feeling happier, it also settles their energy levels, making it easier for them to concentrate. If your kid can concentrate well, he’s more likely to perform better at school.

Exercise boosts self-image and self-esteemWhen you engage in exercise, you feel stronger, faster, fitter and leaner. This makes you feel more self-confident. Kids also feel that way after exercise.

Exercise in the form of team sports will improve social skillsTeam sports teach kids how to socialise and communicate. These improve interpersonal skills, which a kid will need – and rely on – for life!

Exercise helps kids sleep better (and sleep longer)Children need sleep – their brains are developing fast. But there’s e that this development only happens when kids sleep. So sleep deprivation is, quite literally, bad for a kid’s brain. Exercise provides the ideal release for kid energy, allowing the child to sleep well thereafter.

Exercise improves motor coordination and skillsThrough exercise, children refine and improve their motor skills and their coordination. This makes them better able to perform all sorts of tasks throughout life.

Making your child’s lunchboxes is the only way you can be sure you know what’s going in them. You can tailor them to suit their tastes and choose good-quality ingredients

to make them nutritious. Keep the ingredients fresh, the flavours exciting, and make different options throughout the week to keep things interesting. For a well-balanced meal that will keep you going all day, aim for a good mix of protein and

carbohydrates with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

SavouryA flask of home-made soup with a hunk of nice bread and a small wedge of tasty cheese, slices of home-made pizza, quiche or frittata, or pittas stuffed with mini

home-made kebabs.

SweetA fresh fruit salad, a tablespoon of dried fruit, stewed fruit and natural yoghurt, a slice of fruit bread, fresh fruit skewers, oaty biscuits, home-made flapjacks, or granola bars

packed with lots of lovely nuts and seeds.

DrinksHome-made fruit smoothies, water with a wedge of fresh lemon or lime, milk,

or freshly squeezed fruit juice mixed with sparkling water. Pop a carton of 100% unsweetened fruit juice in the freezer overnight. Pack it in your child’s lunchbox first

thing and by lunchtime they will have a lovely slushy cold drink.

Patrick Holford’s lunchboxes

Jamie Oliver’s lunchboxes

A well-planned lunchbox will energise your child, both physically and mentally. Carbohydrate-containing foods with a lower glycemic index (GI) will supply a steady source of energy. Adding lean protein and a little fat helps to prolong steady energy

release. Adding veggies and/or fruit contributes to the vitamin content. Round off the lunchbox with a tub of yoghurt and a bottle of water.

Sandwich ideasPuree vegetables such as leftover roasted vegetables to use as a sandwich spread. Add a little mayonnaise and some leftover meat and put on a low GI roll or use as a sandwich with rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. Make the following on on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread: Biltong and cottage cheese | Mashed hard-boiled egg

with homemade sandwich spread | Nut butter and honey (raw) | Tuna and mayo with lettuce and tomato | Toasted cheese and egg.

GREAT VIEWWOOD-FIRED PIZZASFRESH SPRING MENU

Following a Mediterranean diet is just as easy when it comes to packing healthy lunches and lunchboxes. You can use wholesome, natural fish products, including herring, calamari, and herbed and peppered mackerel, which is a real hit when added to veggies or a fresh salad. For lunchboxes, yummy humus dips, pates and unprocessed cheeses add some protein to the mix. Throw in some veggie crudités and a delicious fresh fruit and you will be set up for the day. Cheeses like modified cheese and Edam cheese are gentle in flavour and loved by most children.

For those who have dairy allergies, add some drained chickpeas and beans for extra protein instead. Olives, which are high in unsaturated fats, will keep you fuller for longer and add those booster carries for fussy eaters. Don't forget the treats! Halva is a delicous Mediterranean delicacy. Packed with protein and calories, a small piece goes a long way to quietening that sweet tooth. Try out different flavours, such as vanilla or chocolate. (See page 6 for more lunchbox ideas.)

The Mediterranean diet is all about healthy eating habits and enjoying the food you eat.

(Article by Kath Megaw, co-author of Feeding Sense (Metz Press, 2012. Kath holds four medical qualifications including a paediatric dietetic qualification from Johns Hopkins. She frequently speaks

to groups of both professionals and parents on infant and childhood nutrition, and appears on television and radio shows. Kath has been in private practice for the past 15 years and is the founder

of Nutripaeds, a paediatric dietetic practice.)

The Mediterranean lifestyle and its benefitsWhen you hear the word “Mediterranean,” what do you

think of? Perhaps you envision crusty loaves of bread, tender olives, and fresh herbs. Or maybe you imagine a glass of red wine shared with friends. Better yet, you might picture yourself watching the sunset over a lush vineyard from the open deck of a grand Tuscan villa.

All these things are characteristically Mediterranean, but they do not define the Mediterranean lifestyle. In the same way, there is no single Mediterranean diet, because the word Mediterranean is used to describe a group of more than 15 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

You may be wondering what then constitutes the Mediterranean diet trend that has recently become popular. Rather than prescribing a strict set of rules for foods to eat and foods to avoid, the Mediterranean diet offers guidelines for a healthfy way of life. The Mediterranean diet is about more than just food, however – it is about living life to its fullest and being healthy as you do. The Mediterranean diet is about eating wholesome foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, wholesome grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. And who could forget olive oil, fresh fish, and good wine?

Though the Mediterranean diet is high in dietary fat, more than half of the fat calories consumed in the Mediterranean diet come from monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fat comes from sources like olive oil and avocados. In 2009, a study was published in the Journal of Nutrition regarding the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the risk for chronic disease. The results of this study suggest that an eating pattern high in plant foods and unsaturated fats, like the Mediterranean diet, can reduce the risk for lower abdominal obesity and coronary heart disease (Romaguera et al., 2009).

Bar Bar Black Sheep & Oude Wellington Restaurantare merging @ Oude Wellington

Bainskloof Pass, Oude Wellington Estate 082 836 8924

WelcomeStarting at a new school can be quite a daunting experience for anyone, but our new learners received a warm welcome in the form of blue milkshakes with the principal. This was an opportunity for Mr Bester to get better acquainted with the new learners and welcome them to the school.

During the December holidays, one of our play areas underwent a major transformation, giving learners ample space to play in during break. The two large chessboards are a source of hours of fun.

Pieter Scheepers aangebied is, bygewoon.

Celebrated the 140th birthday of Girl’s HighOn 17 January 2016 Paarl Girls’ High School celebrated their 140th birthday. On 15 January, the Grade 12 learners made a banner for the school and released it while the whole school sang Happy Birthday in the Girls’ High manner. There was a church service in the Strooidakkerk on 17 January, with many special contributions.

A very special item was the Olivier family singing Amazing Grace, and Milena Schultheiss accompanied by Rykie Boeke singing the famous Pie Jesu. Paarl Girls’ High is humbly thankful to God, the community, students, old Girls and teachers for being able to celebrate the amazing grace of 140 years.

SATA tournament starPaarl Girls’ High School learner Leigh van Zyl in Grade 6 participated in three u/12 SATA tournaments during the December holiday. Once again she made us all extremely proud with her performances at all three tournaments. At the East London and Port Elizabeth tournaments she came fifth. In the Cape Town tournament she not only won the singles, but also the doubles. This is truly a remarkable achievement! Congratulations, Leigh!
