Anguilla found a new hero in Sherwin Richardson who chalked up 26 points which included

16 spikes 6 blocks and 4 service winners. On the other hand Colin Thomas of Antigua had 21

points with 20 of those being spikes as he led the attack for Antigua Barbuda.

Coach Jason Liburd from Anguilla gave the impression that it was yet again a game that they

had in their grasp and it got away. We played well enough to get to two sets to one (2-1)

and once there we were expecting to finish the match in four. Unfortunately we lost focus

and played our worse game of the set in the fourth. Antigua took momentum in that fourth

set and from them it was very difficult to get it back,” he reported

His counterpart Fitzroy Benjamin from Antigua/Barbuda was not surprised that Anguilla had

given them a tough time. “They usually give us a good run because of their style of play,

they are much slower and we are more accustomed to a faster pace. Consequently our

defense was getting to the net much too early. This is something we have to work on when

playing these types of teams Dominica has a similar style and so we have to be careful,” was

his assessment. “I also think that we had superior fitness and that account for a lot in the

longer version of the game,” he noted.

Ian Bucci of team Bermuda had the most kills

(16) in the match while Captain Leonardo Jeffers of Dutch St. Maarten led his team from in

front with 15 Spikes.

Coach Raymond Jacobs was happy with the victory but clearly not satisfied with the manner

of achieving it. “I thought that we should have been able to put them away in three sets, we

should not have been trading points with Bermuda. However I am glad that we won so that

we could achieve our secondary objective which is to qualify,” he said.

Coach Bill Bucci of Bermuda was graceful in defeat. “I am just very pleased with these guys

particularly the young ones. We played much better than we played in our first game with

many players giving their best effort and that all I can ask of them,” he said. We seem to be

improving incrementally and now we won our first set and lost a very close one. This augers

well for the future since we have teenagers (one 15 and the other 16) coming in and

contributing effectively,” he concluded.

Bermuda now has one point but have a tough task ahead of them when they meet Antigua

at 6 pm on Saturday 1st

2012- Antigua/Barbuda brushed aside Bermuda

FIVB Men’s World Championship Qualification

Tournament NORCECA Group D. In doing so

they remained unbeaten from all four games

and have registered an unassailable 17 points

to top the group.

The coaching staff sat back and watched while their troupes exhibited superiority over their

rivals in three relatively easy sets.

For Antigua Xavier Roberts scored 14 points from 11 spikes and 3 blocks

Brian Amaro led his team Bermuda in scoring with 6 the 36 points they earn throughout

the ordeal.

Antigua Coach Fitzroy Benjamin of Antigua Barbuda gave his assessment. “From the

moment we saw them play the first game we knew that they were not at the level to really

compete at this level so we choose the opportunity to give most of our younger players

more playing time and we were still able to win comfortable,” he reported.

Coach Bucci of Bermuda paid tribute to the Antigua team. They are a good team with big

and athletic guys and in this tournament they were the best team and deserve to win the

group. However there is a difference between losing and getting beaten. We were beaten

tonight. However, we were still able to enjoy the game and learn a great deal in the

process,” he intimated.

French St. Martin eyes second place with victory over

Anguilla


2012- French St. Martin did just enough to win

3-1 (25 -23, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-19) over

Anguilla in match number seven of FIVB Men’s

World Championship Qualification

Tournament NORCECA Group D. It was an all

important game as both teams were trying to

cement the second place after Antigua

Barbuda had sewn up first place.

“It was a must win for us,” declared Paul Quellery - French St. Martin’s Captain. “Right now I

am relieved that it is over and we came out victors. We are not quite yet there yet but we

are closer to the secondary objective of placing second we have one more step and that

against Dutch St. Maarten,” he added.

Captain Ian Connor of Anguilla was disappointed. “We played a tough five setter this

morning and so the guys came in rather flat in the first set, probably due to fatigue. We

begun picking up momentum at the end of the first set but lost on a crucial point. This

carried over into the second set and we just could not manage to pull it off. By the time we

grabbed one in the third we were well out of steam,” he assessed.

Coach Jason Liburd of Anguilla was dejected. We did not execute the way we wanted to and

now we a faced with a chance of only placing third but we have to come here and beat

Bermuda,” he suggested.

Coach Lizen wore a bright smile. “Four years ago they defeated us in Antigua so for me this

is sweet revenge. We changed up the tactics tonight and in the end all departments

improved,” he said.

For French St. Martin Paul Quellery and Julien Sponsper combined for 31 spikes while

Sherwin Richardson 19 points were the highest for Team Anguilla.

The clashed between the two border neighbours St. Maarten- Dutch and St. Martin- French

is being dubbed as the climax to the group.
