Dry indoor airtakes its tollBy David Uffington

Depending on your heat source, thiswinter likely has been one of the worst inrecent memory when it comes to dry airin your home. Throat and respiratoryproblems are the first things most peoplenotice, especially since we spend morehours indoors during the winter. Yourwood furniture, musical instruments, wood floors and oil paintings take a beat-ing too.

Increasing the humidity levels in yourhome might seem easy - head to the big-box store and load up on inexpensivehumidifiers. That might solve your prob-lem for about a week, but then the reali-ties begin to settle in. Humidifiers needmaintenance so they don't become abreeding ground for mold and bacteria, which then gets blown into the room andcan make you even sicker than the dry airdid. Minerals in the water become air-borne and can leave a white dust, madeworse if you have hard water. Dependingon the type of humidifier, you'll needwick and filter replacements, chemicals -and frequent cleanings.

Here's a breakdown of the types ofhumidifiers you'll find:

Steam vapor - has a heating unit thatcreates warm mist

Ultrasonic - vibrates the water to pro-duce a cool mist

Impeller - uses a rotating disk to pro-duce cool mist

Evaporators - a fan blows water overa wick or filter

For tips on keeping your home safewhile using a humidifier, check the MayoClinic site online and search for humidi-fiers. Read humidifier reviews onAmazon.com before you settle on a par-ticular model. Read Consumer Reportsonline for guidance about better modelsbefore you make a purchase. Do the mathto calculate the cost of wick, filters andchemicals. Go on YouTube to find ideasfor building inexpensive evaporativehumidifiers.

Meanwhile, try these inexpensiveways to add moisture: Hang your wetlaundry in the house to dry. Turn off theauto-dry on your dishwasher and open thedoor after the final cycle so the steamwill flow into the room. Keep a pot ofwater simmering on the stove (only ifyou'll be home to keep an eye on it). Takea shower with the exhaust fan left off, then place a fan in the doorway to blowthe humidified air into the next room.

One of the benefits of higher humidityin your home is that you'll feel warmer, and will even be able to lower the ther-mostat a few degrees. Invest in a hygrom-eter to test your humidity levels.

David Uffington regrets that he cannotpersonally answer reader questions, but willincorporate them into his column wheneverpossible. Send email [email protected].

Explaining the mythical leprechaun

Interesting facts about Saint Patrick

Celtic culture is ripe with legends and myths thathelp to entertain and explain the mysteries of life.Among such lore are leprechauns, which are mytho-logical figures that continue to impart whimsy into St.Patrick's Day celebrations even now.

The word "leprechaun" is derived from the Irish luchorpain, meaning "small body." Various attributeshave been used to describe leprechauns. While the ori-gins and the history surrounding leprechauns differ, one common thread is that these creatures are sur-rounded in magic. Some believed leprechauns weredescendents of the Goddess Danu and the Tuatha DeDanaan. They inhabited Ireland long before the Celtsarrived, and when the Celts did come, brandishingiron swords that could penetrate the leprechauns'magic, leprechauns fled to underground abodes in thesoil shielded by magical, hidden entrances. Some sayleprechauns still reside under the damp soil.

Other stories describe leprechauns as smart, devi-ous creatures of fairy folk who were the only fairies tohave a profession other than cattle trading.Leprechauns were shoemakers to the fairies who tookthe shape of men wearing green or red coats and hatsand participated in mischief. Leprechauns hoarded allof their gold coins in a pot under a rainbow. Catchinga leprechaun was tricky, as these "wee folk," as they

were often described in folk tales, were quite adept atremaining out of arm's reach. Should one be capturedby a human, folklore stated that the leprechaun mustgrant three wishes to earn his release.

Some viewed leprechauns as serious sorts, keepingpeople away from sacred places and helping to controlpeople's behaviors. Historians believe this was one forleaders to establish societal rules.

Descriptions of leprechauns and tales of their anticshave survived in Ireland for centuries. When the Irishbegan emigrating to America during the Great PotatoFamine, they brought with them their mythology andstories. However, the tale of the leprechaun haschanged over time.

The Irish-American view of the leprechaun differedfrom the more traditional Irish view. Americans sawleprechauns as frivolous and silly. Leprechauns weredepicted with broad, pug noses and out-of-style rattyclothing. Many negative stereotypes Americans direct-ed at the swarms of Irish immigrants arriving in theUnited States were exemplified in the insensitive and,at times, hateful illustrations of leprechauns.

Leprechaun mythology has been alive and well inIreland for more than a thousand years and will likelylive on for centuries more.

•Though he is forever linked to the Emerald Isle,Saint Patrick was actually born in England, and hisinitial introduction to Ireland was anything but pleas-ant. That's because St. Patrick was captured by piratesas a child and brought to Ireland, where he spent sixyears in slavery. After escaping captivity, he eventual-ly returned to Ireland as a missionary.

•Saint Patrick's work as a Christian missionaryincorporated some pagan beliefs to which manynatives of Ireland had previously subscribed. He com-bined those beliefs with the Christian sacrament, andthe Celtic cross traces its origins to this combinationof pagan beliefs and Christianity.

•Despite growing up in a family with strong ties toorganized religion, Saint Patrick himself was notraised in a particularly religious household. Thoughhis grandfather was a member of the clergy and hismother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours,Saint Patrick's childhood home was not especially reli-

gious nor was it one that placed a strong emphasis oneducation. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in lifethat his lack of formal education had long been asource of embarrassment for him.

•While in captivity, Saint Patrick tended sheepunder a high priest of Druidism, a Pagan sect that hadconsiderable influence over Ireland at the time.Despitethat, Saint Patrick became deeply devoted toChristianity during his captivity, when he becamedetermined to free the Irish from Druidism.

•After fleeing captivity, Saint Patrick said that theidea to flee came to him in a dream in which a voicepromised him that, if he fled, he would safely find hisway home to England. So he convinced sailors to lethim board their ship. This was a ship those on boardwould soon abandon, eventually landing in France, where they wandered 200 miles in 28 days. But true tohis dream, Saint Patrick was eventually reunited withhis family in England.

St. Patrick's Day fast factsEach March 17th, people the world over slip into something

green, take in a neighborhood parade and enjoy St. Patrick'sDay festivities. A day to honor Ireland's patron saint, St.Patrick's Day is ripe with traditions and history, much of whichis largely unknown to the celebrating masses. In honor of St.Patrick's Day, the following are some handy pieces of trivia toimpress friends and family each day of March leading up to thebig day.

1. St. Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Britain to anaristocratic family. His early life was not particularly religious, but he had a religious conversion in his teenage years.

2. The largest St. Patrick's Day Parade is not held in Ireland. That honor belongs to New York City, where the annual St.Patrick's Day Parade draws more than a million spectators eachyear.

3. Thirteen million pints of Guinness are consumed on St.Patrick's Day. That's double the amount consumed on otherdays.

4. Although many people wear some form of green in honorof St. Patrick's Day, green was once considered an unluckycolor in Ireland.

5. The city of Chicago really gets into the festivities, goingso far as to dye the Chicago River green, which the city hasbeen doing since 1962.

6. Evidence suggests there never were any actual snakes forSt. Patrick to drive out of Ireland. It stands to reason snakeswere a metaphor for the evil of paganism.

7. There are roughly 33 million U.S. residents of Irishancestry. That number is nearly 9 times the population ofIreland.

8. St. Patrick was not the first person to bring Christianity toIreland, as monasteries had been built long before St. Patrick'sarrival.

9. In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day has traditionally been a reli-gious occasion. Until the 1970s, many stores and pubs wereclosed. Laws were changed in 1995.

10. There are about 60 churches and cathedrals named forSt. Patrick in Ireland. One of the most famous is St. Patrick'sCathedral in Dublin.

11. Each year, members of the Shamrock Club in NewLondon, Wisconsin, change highway signs so the town namereads New Dublin.

12. Some lore regarding St. Patrick says he raised peoplefrom the dead.

13. Three-hundred species of plants are considered clover.14. Blue was the original color associated with St. Patrick.15. The city of Montreal, Canada, uses a shamrock in its

city flag.

Fun ways to exercise outdoorsAbundant sunshine, higher tempera-

tures and longer days make spring theperfect time to get outside and enjoy thegreat outdoors. Local parks may offer aslew of outdoor recreational activities tomembers of the community each spring, and there are bound to be a few seasonalofferings that focus on outdoor fitness.

Taking your workout outdoors is agreat way to enjoy pleasant weather andstay fit at the same time. In addition toexercise routines done at the gym, explore the following energizing outdooractivities to burn calories and soak upsome springtime sun at the same time.

HikingA nearby park or wildlife preserve that

features walking trails is a good place tobegin an outdoor workout. Some parksbuild exercise stations into their hikingpaths, enabling visitors to vary theirworkouts along the way. Signs may alsopoint out particular exercises that can bedone during the hike, such as lunges orsquats.

Hiking is a good cardiovascular work-out that is particularly beneficial whendone on varied terrain. Mixing uphill anddownhill portions of the trail with levelones will work the various muscles in thelegs and also provide greater resistance toget the heart pumping.

Hiking yoga is a new fitness trend thatmelds the classic poses of yoga with thecardiovascular workout of hiking. Hikerscan break up their workouts at variouspoints by getting into yoga poses. Bydoing so, it's possible to burn twice theamount of calories one would in a stan-dard yoga session. There's also the addedbenefit of being outdoors, which canboost your mood.

Outdoor sportsRev up the heart and cardiovascular

system with sports you can play in thegreat outdoors. Eschew indoor racquetballfor a game on an outdoor court.

It's easy to break a sweat and enjoy a

good workout when a game of hoops istaken outdoors. Many parks include bas-ketball courts where a few players cansquare off against one another.

Pickup football or baseball is anotherway to enjoy physical activity outdoors, especially for those who may not be gymhounds. Both sports provide a cardiovas-cular workout while building muscle. When players are engrossed in the game, they may not realize they're having funand getting fit at the same time.

CyclingMajor cities across the United States,

including New York, Denver,Washington, D.C. and Minneapolis, nowboast bike-sharing programs. Caloriesburned while biking vary depending onthe length and intensity of a ride, but

cycling is often great exercise.Cycling is not only for city streets.

Explore the various "rails to trails" pro-grams that criss-cross the country.Defunct railway lines have been turnedinto walking and biking paths. Some hugcoastal areas and feature impressiveviews. Especially adventurous riders canhop on a mountain bike and take to thehills.

Jungle gym and parks workoutUse items in the park to tailor a com-

plete workout. Park benches can serve asa workout bench where athletes can dopush-ups, triceps dips and step-up exer-cises. Stretch on a jungle gym or usemonkey bars to fit in some pull-ups.

Some parks have their own fitnesszones with exercise equipment built intothe design. Hop onto a rowing machine ora hydraulic-based elliptical free of cost.

Beach bountyThe beach is not just for relaxing and

catching some sun. Beaches can be agreat place to get a good workout as well.Swimming in the ocean against the tug ofthe tide and waves is quite a task. Thebuoyancy of the water will prevent strainon your joints, but the resistance of thewater will work your muscles harder thanif you were swimming in a pool.

Running or walking in sand is tougherthan doing the same activities on apacked surface. The sand offers moreresistance, which will tire out your legsand provide a greater cardiovascular ben-efit. Carting a few children, a cooler, beach chairs, and refreshments also mayqualify as a workout!

The spring is a time when many peo-ple renew their love affair with the greatoutdoors and take advantage of all theoutdoor events and activities at their dis-posal. Exercising outdoors is one way tosoak up some sun while enjoying somefresh air and getting healthier.

Use the warm weather as anexcuse to take your workoutoutdoors.

Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver

It was historian Barbara Tuchman who

made the following sage observation:

"War is the unfolding of miscalculations."

You might be surprised to learn that a

polar bear's skin is black and its fur is

colorless. The transparent strands are so

dense, though, that the fur takes on the

color of the light around it.

Unless you're a literary scholar, you've

probably never heard of the novel "Cup

of Gold." It was American author John

Steinbeck's first novel, and it was a flop.

He was issued a $250 advance to write

the book, and the sales didn't even make

that much money for the publishing

house. Of course, early failure was no

indication of talent; Steinbeck continued

writing and was awarded the Nobel Prize

for Literature in 1962.

Domestic diva Martha Stewart once

dated actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. After

seeing "The Silence of the Lambs,"

though, Stewart broke it off. She just

couldn't get past the image of him as

Hannibal Lecter.

You might think of glaciers as lifeless

places, but that's not true. In addition to

the polar creatures that live on and around

these sheets of ice, there is one that actu-

ally lives in the ice. Though they're only

found in glaciers in certain areas of North

America, the ice worm actually spends its

entire life within the ice. In fact, the

worms are so well-adjusted to the cold

that when they are exposed to tempera-

tures even slightly above 40 degrees

Fahrenheit, they will liquefy.

Weigh options regardingcredit and debit cards

Credit and debit cards are how manypeople make their purchases, both big andsmall. Many people would rather swipe acard at the checkout counter than countcash. These cards offer unmatched con-venience and can help keep receiptsorganized and purchases accountable withminimal effort.

But credit cards and debit cards are notperfect. One of the biggest disadvantagesto using cards to make all purchases is thetendency to lose track of your spending. When paying with cash, consumers canvisibly see the money leaving their pock-ets and know when that money has runout. Paying by card is an abstract conceptthat doesn't become real until bills arereceived or bank statements are reviewed.

Although debit and credit cards arefrequently used interchangeably, there aretimes when one is preferable over theother. Here's how to decide which card touse.

•Need to build credit? Use a creditcard if you are trying to establish a posi-tive credit history. However, you mustpay your bill in a timely fashion, and ithelps to pay the entire balance each andevery billing cycle to develop a goodcredit score.

•Don't want a large monthly bill?Debit cards withdraw money directlyfrom your account at the moment thetransaction occurs. Much like spendingwith cash, debit cards let users knowwhen they have run out of cash, as cardswill be denied if the transaction is notapproved. If you do not want to pay alarge bill at the end of the month, debitcards are the better choice.

•Prefer greater security? Great strideshave been made to thwart would-be iden-tity thieves and keep financial data safe. However, as was evidenced by the majordata breach in Target's payment system in

late 2013, when millions of credit anddebit card numbers and PIN codes werehacked, no system is entirely foolproof.Credit cards offer added security becauseif fraudulent purchases are made, yourcredit card account will be quickly frozenand you will not be held accountable. When using debit cards, you are spendingyour own money up front. Fraudulentpurchases may be fixed over time, but itcould leave a deficit in your account untilmatters are resolved.

•Want to minimize fees? Debit cardsdo not charge interest or minimum chargepenalties. There's no need to worry aboutbeing late for a payment and gettingcharged a fee, and causing your balanceto skyrocket. Gas stations and otherretailers that may charge more per pur-chase for using credit cards will treatdebit cards like cash and offer the samediscounts.

•Enjoy perks? Credit card companieswill sell you their card over another basedon various perks. In addition to competi-tive interest rates, perks may includebeing able to accumulate travel points,cash-back dollar amounts, advanced tick-eting offers for shows and sportingevents, discounts and coupons for certainretailers, and many other benefits.

More and more consumers are relyinglargely on credit cards and debit cards tomake their purchases. Each type of cardhas its benefits and disadvantages, soconsumers must weigh their options todetermine which type of card works bestfor them.

Most stores list the unit price on theshelf tag. Use it to compare the cost ofdifferent sizes and brands of the sameitem. Just because a package is biggerdoesn’t necessarily mean it has the bestprice per unit.

By Angela Shelf MedearisRoasting meats and vegetables is one of

the oldest cooking techniques in humanhistory. The earliest form of cooking wasprobably the direct heat method -- placingraw meat into an open fire. Roasting viaindirect heat was probably an accident.Raw meat was left near the fire, cookingthe side closest to the heat. Eventually, somebody thought of putting the meat on astick, and turning it so that all of the sidescooked evenly -- and spit-roasting wasborn.

The earliest ovens were made of earthand clay and were found in CentralEurope. An earth oven is one of the keyindicators of human civilization. It is oneof the most common artifacts archaeologistlook for at an anthropological dig.

Typically, a pit was dug into the groundand then heated, usually by rocks or smol-dering debris. The food was wrapped inleaves and set on top of the heat source, then covered with earth. Cooking times areusually long, as the food is cooked by slowroasting. This type of earth oven has beenused by many cultures.

In pre-dynastic Egypt, each mud-brickhouse had an oven. The ceramic oven isbuilt of clay or another ceramic material, and takes different forms depending on theculture. It is one of the earliest forms ofour modern ovens. In India, it is referredto as a "tandoor." Ovens were used to cookfood and to make bricks. Brick is anotherceramic material and was used to makeovens popular in Italy. With no need forspits or constantly turning the food over afire, oven roasting was born.

High-heat roasting concentrates the fla-vor of meats and vegetables and brings outtheir natural sweetness. Best of all, it canbe done year-round -- on the grill in goodweather and in the oven during coldweather.

There's no comparison between roastedand steamed vegetables. Roasted veggieshave browning, carmelization and crisp

edges and texture, which adds to their fla-vor. Roasted vegetables also add wonder-ful flavors to dishes without a lot of fatand calories. Roasting garlic, potatoes andcarrots can work wonders as fat substitutesin recipes for mashed vegetables, sauces, cream soups and casseroles. You canspread six cloves of roasted garlic over aslice of bread as you would butter.

“We’ll prove to you what we can do!”

Nutrition and aging go hand-in-handNutrition is important for people of all ages, but it's

especially important for men and women over the ageof 50, who can dramatically improve their quality oflife by eating a well-balanced diet filled with vitaminsand nutrients. Though that may seem like commonsense, research has shown that men and women in thisage group, who are often referred to as "BabyBoomers," are not necessarily as healthy as they mayseem.

While the baby boomer generation, which is gener-ally regarded as those people born between 1946 and1964, boasts longer life expectancies than any genera-tion that came before them, some of that can likely bechalked up to advancements in medical care, includinga booming pharmaceutical industry that seemingly hasan antidote to every ailment. But a 2013 study fromresearchers at the West Virginia University School ofMedicine found that baby boomers are less healthythan the generation that immediately preceded them, tending to be more likely to have higher levels ofhypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. While thatnews might be sobering, it's never too late for menand women over 50 to start eating healthier diets, which can reduce their risk of a wide range of ail-ments, including heart disease, stroke and osteoporo-sis.

The following are a few ways men and womenover 50 can alter their diets so their bodies are gettingwhat they need to live long and healthy lives well intotheir golden years. As is always the case, men andwomen should discuss any potential changes to theirdiets with their physicians to ensure the changes willbe both effective and healthy.

•Balance your diet. Kids hear of the benefits of abalanced diet seemingly from the moment they enter aclassroom for the first time, but many adults fail toheed that basic advice as they get further and furtheraway from kindergarten. When changing your diet, besure to include plenty of protein and carbohydrates.Protein maintains and rebuilds muscles, which is espe-cially important for aging men and women who mightfind themselves unable to keep up with the physicaldemands of everyday life as well as they used to.Including ample low-fat protein, which can be foundin fish, eggs and low-fat dairy among other foods, willaid in muscle recovery, benefitting aging athletes aswell as those men and women over 50 who recentlystarted exercising as a means to regaining their physi-

cal fitness. A diet lacking in sufficient protein can con-tribute to muscle deterioration, arthritis and evenorgan failure, so it's important for men and women toprioritize including protein intheir diets.

Carbohydrates are also an important part of a bal-anced diet, as they are a great source of energy thatcan help men and women stay active well past the ageof 50. Carbohydrates found in fruits, grains and veg-etables are the most beneficial, as these contain valu-able vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

•Don't denounce dairy. Dairy is a great source ofcalcium, which promotes strong bones and teeth. Menand women over the age of 50 want their bones to beas strong as possible because aging is one of thestrongest risk factors for osteoporosis, a potentiallydebilitating medical condition in which loss of tissuecauses bones to become brittle and fragile. Vitamin Dis necessary to effectively absorb calcium, and vitaminD can be found in certain dairy products, includingpasture-raised eggs and grass-fed cow's milk, and canbe generated when men and women get enough sun-light. Other healthy sources of vitamin D includesalmon, light tuna packed in oil, sardines, and sun-grown mushrooms.

•Cut back on sodium intake. Cutting back on sodi-um intake can be very beneficial, especially for menand women over the age of 50, who are at greater riskof diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease. But cutting back on sodium intake takes more thanjust throwing the salt shaker away. Processed foods, soups, canned goods, salad dressings, condimentssuch as mustard and ketchup, and breakfast cereals arejust a few of the many products that may containalarming amounts of sodium. That's important to note,as excess sodium increases blood pressure by holdingexcess fluid in the body. That excess fluid puts anadded burden on the heart, potentially increasing aperson's risk of stroke, heart failure, osteoporosis, can-cer, and kidney disease. The problem with cuttingback on sodium is that salt is so often relied on tomake foods taste better, and many people find salt-freefoods bland.

No one is too old or too young to embrace a nutri-tious diet. But men and women over the age of 50 arein a unique position to vastly improve their quality oflife by adopting a low-sodium diet that is rich in vita-mins and minerals.

How to banishthose gray hairs

Roughly one in five Americans uses hair dye to enhancetheir looks or hide gray hair. But concerns about gray hair andlooking older are not exclusive to the United States.

The trouble with gray hair - and especially hair close to thetemples - is that such hair tends to be more coarse and moreresistant to absorbing hair color than other hair. It can be diffi-cult to cover the gray hairs, and then once it is dyed, gray hairmay end up showing prematurely.

Gray hair results from the hair cortex, or the middle layer ofthe hair, losing both the yellow and red pigments that are nor-mally present in the strands. In order to successfully covergrays, these pigments need to be replaced using dyes that havered, yellow and blue bases. Shades characterized as "neutral"are usually the best bets. Avoid ash colors, which tend to havea blue, green or violet base. The hair shaft will pick up theunderlying color but not absorb the intended color.

Resistant grays may need the color solution to remain onmuch longer than is normal or recommended. Sometimes it cantake up to 45 minutes for resistant grays to absorb dye. Certainmanufacturers make dyes that are designed specifically for grayhair and allow for better penetration. Sometimes gray hair mayneed to be presoftened with peroxide prior to color application. The peroxide will raise the hair shaft and enable the color topenetrate better.

Coloring hair at home is possible but may not produce themost desirable results, and there is a greater chance of usererror with drug store coloring products. When making drasticchanges to hair color, it may be best to consult with a profes-sional stylist and discuss color preferences.

Seniors may need vaccinesThough vaccines are usually associated with childhood or

foreign travel, older adults may need certain vaccinations asthey age. Even those who received immunizations as young-sters may need refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifi-cally to the over 50 crowd. Seniors are urged to talk to theirdoctors about certain vaccines. In addition to flu shots, thereare vaccinations that can help prevent other illnesses, such aspertussis (whooping cough), shingles, diphtheria/tetanus, andpneumonia. Shingles is a condition that affects those who hadchickenpox as children, and can be quite painful. A vaccinationis an easy way to avoid it. Many local pharmacies now offeron-site immunizations, saving people a trip to the doctor'soffice.

Aggressive driving can dramatically reduce fuel efficiency. According toU.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving that includes rapid acceleration andbraking wastes gas, lowering gas mileage by 33 percent on highways and 5 percentwhen driving around town. Driving at higher speeds can also negatively affect gasmileage, which begins to decrease rapidly at speeds above 50 miles per hour, with eachfive miles per hour more than 50 mph akin to paying an extra $0.25 per gallon for gas.

Get the facts on stomach bugsFew things can prove more painful or

inconvenient than stomach bugs. Digestivetract illnesses can cause persons to spendmany hours of the day running to rest-rooms while confining others to the housefor extended periods of time. Though oftentemporary, stomach bugs can last severaldays to more than a week and they maylead to more dire situations if not properlytreated.

Causes: Stomach bugs are known asgastroenteritis, a condition characterizedby an inflamed and irritated stomach andintestines. The Mayo Clinic says peopleare most likely to contract gastroenteritisafter eating contaminated foods or drink-ing contaminated water. Sharing items, like utensils, with someone who is infectedis another way to contract gastroenteritis.Viral gastroenteritis is caused by a virusthat enters the body. However, bacteria andparasites also are responsible for stomachbug outbreaks. Viruses that trigger gas-troenteritis include adenoviruses, rotavirus-es, calciviruses, astroviruses, andnoroviruses. Bacteria that can cause gas-troenteritis include E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and shingella.

Symptoms: Stomach bugs often strikesuddenly. Sufferers may experiencequeasiness or nausea and a loss of appetite.Pain or bloating in the stomach also mayoccur. Vomiting and diarrhea often causemany people to suspect something iswrong, and some stomach conditions arealso accompanied by fever, achiness andlethargy.

Treatment: Many people opt for await-and-see approach when struck withstomach bugs. Gastroenteritis often healson its own. Some refer to it as a "24-hour-bug" and find that once the stomach hasbeen purged clean, the offender no longerwreaks havoc on the body. But stomachbugs can be more persistent as well.Sufferers should visit a doctor if vomitingor diarrhea last more than a few days.Doctors may take a stool sample to deter-mine what's behind the bug. In the event

of a bacterial infection, an antibiotic maybe needed to clear up the infection.Visiting a doctor when stomach problemspersist is also beneficial because he or shemay be able to rule out certain conditions, such as colitis, ulcers or Crohn's disease.

Helpful hints: When a stomach bugstrikes, it is best to refrain from eating, especially when vomiting regularly. Stickto clear broths and liquids, which are easyon the digestive system, while the stomachis irritated. Once vomiting has subsided, sufferers should opt for a bland diet. Whenplagued by diarrhea, the BRAT diet isadviseable. This acronym stands forBananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.

Because a stomach bug often leads todehydration, drink plenty of fluids. Torestore salt and electrolyte balances, sportsdrinks are adviseable for adults, while abeverage like Pedialyte is best for childrenand the elderly.

When symptoms begin to subside, suf-ferers can gradually add foods back intotheir diets. But men and women shouldavoid particularly spicy or heavy foodsuntil they are fully recovered.

To avoid suffering from stomach bugs, men and women should consider the fol-lowing tips.

•Frequently wash your hands whenpreparing food and thoroughly cook foods, particularly meats, poultry and eggs, toreduce potential exposure to bacteria.

•E. coli may be present on some freshproduce, so wash produce carefully beforeconsumption.

•Consider taking a probiotic supple-ment to increase the amount of good bac-teria in your digestive tract. Yogurt alsocontains live cultures that are good atmaintaining digestive health.

•Avoid contact with people who claimto have the stomach flu.

• Promptly consult a doctor if symp-toms do not go away or if you have a highfever or blood in your stool. This mayindicate a different illness.

Refinancing a mortgage is advanta-geous to homeowners for a variety of rea-sons. The primary reasons people refi-nance their mortgages are to reduce theirmonthly payments or free up equity to usetoward home improvements or othernecessities. Lenders will frequently adver-tise that "now"is the time to refinance, butpeople may want to get all of the factsbefore making their decisions.

A low interest rate is not reason aloneto refinance. Conventional wisdom haslong suggested that borrowers wait to refi-nance until interest rates drop 2 percentbelow their current rate. While a low inter-est rate is important, there are several otherfactors to consider.

Closing costs: Refinancing a home isan expensive undertaking. While it caneffectively shave $100 or more off yourmonthly payments, there is a financial out-lay during the process, which includesclosing costs. A person can expect to payanywhere from 2 to 5 percent of the loan'svalue in closing costs when refinancing.Lenders used to enable some to roll thecost of the closing into the mortgage, butstringent rules have changed the way manybanks now do business. If the finances aresimply not there to cover the closing costs, refinancing may not be an option.

Credit rating: If your credit rating isbetter now than it was when you initiallyearned your home loan, then this might bea good time to refinance. Not only will aperson benefit from a low market rate, theinterest rate may be even lower becauselenders look more fondly on you now thanthey did years ago. Lenders often basetheir assessments of borrower reliabilityand stability on those potential borrowers'credit scores, so a strong credit scoremakes you look better in the eyes oflenders. Borrowers with poor credit ratingsmay not benefit from refinancing.

Income: Aperson's debt-to-income ratiois another factor in determining mortgageinterest rates and approval. A positive

change in income status as well as reduc-tion in debt could make it a good time torefinance.

Adjustable rate mortgages: Manypeople opted for adjustable rate mortgageswhen buying homes years ago. Over time, their monthly payments may haveincreased considerably, making it nearlyimpossible to afford a home. Refinancingfor a fixed-rate mortgage, regardless of thecurrent interest rate, will likely ease someof your financial burden.

Home value: A higher home valuemeans more equity in the home. Thismoney can be used to pay down debt orfor home improvements that furtherimprove the value of the home and proper-ty. It is important to speak with a realestate professional to determine if homevalues have spiked in a particular neigh-borhood and to gain an accurate appraisalof the home. This will help determine ifrefinancing is frugal.

Interest rates: Lower interest ratesoften motivate homeowners to refinance,as a lower interest rate can save homeown-ers a substantial amount of money over thecourse of their loans. However, refinancingtoo soon may put homeowners in a nega-tive light. Lenders may see borrowers whorefinance too soon or too frequently asrisky borrowers who cannot successfullymanage their money.

Prepayment penalties: Certain mort-gages have prepayment penalties built in.Should a person pay off the mortgage tooearly, usually within two to five years, 2 to4 percent of the home's loan value must bepaid out. Refinancing counts as paying offone loan and opening up another. Penaltiescould deter a person from refinancing toosoon.

Determining the best time to refinanceyour home mortgage takes effort on thepart of the borrower and information aboutmarket trends. By doing one's homework,a person can save money by refinancing ahome loan.
