After missing November’s meeting due to inclement weather, the AAUW’s evening reading group, Books

at the Boulevard, had great December and January meetings. Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” was read for

December and, along with a few gifts exchanged, the Holiday party was a fun one with great discussion

not only about the book, but about our own Christmases past, present, and future. We shared traditions,

stories, favorite (and least favorite) gifts received and all the fun that’s to be had during the holiday

season. It was a great gathering.

The Group enjoyed “Lincoln’s Last Trial” in January. We find it a bit difficult to discuss non-fiction, but our

review of this book was still interesting and we all learned a bit about Lincoln we didn’t know.

The Books at the Boulevard group meets the second Thursday of each month (with some

exceptions) at 6:00 p.m. at the Boulevard Grille located on Southmont Boulevard. We’ve been enjoying

a growing of attendants of around eight to ten each month – we’re growing and welcome anyone who is

interested in joining us!

We’ve planned our books and schedule up through and including fall’s reads with a month off to

accommodate the AUUW Book Sale. We normally choose about six months of books at a time and the

person who chooses a book leads the discussion. A lot of time you can find discussion questions on-line,

but it’s not a worry as they aren’t available for all books. This is totally a NO PRESSURE reading group!

Please consider joining our group. E-mail Billie Zahurak at [email protected] if you plan on

attending so we can include you in our reservations. Feel free to visit even if you didn’t read the book, as

well, just to check it out

Hope to see you at Books at the Boulevard soon!

Upcoming books are as follows:

Member Testimonial: I really hate to exercise, but after hearing about the FWA gym from fellow AAUW members, I've given it a try. I joined the gym a few months ago and now have a renewed desire to get this old body moving again! The FWA gym is a pleasant, clean, and fun place to get some exercise. You can use the machines, weights, or just walk the padded track. The staff and patrons are friendly and make you feel right at home! If you want to be in better shape than the shape you're in, the FWA gym is the place to go!! Betty Zahurak

There was a delay in getting the results of the Property Proposal out because the voting deadline was extended due to problems with postage and mail delivery. However, the results are now official, with votes being cast by 63 of 80 (79%) of our members. Of those, 12 (19%) voted YES, 46 (73%) voted NO, and 5 (8%) abstained. Therefore, the proposal did not pass. Some people were concerned about property ownership and maintenance, others about this property’s condition and/or location, and still others about the notion of running a year-round book store. While the concept may have been disconcerting to some, the proposal has generated a great deal of discussion about the future of our Book Sale as our primary fundraiser, the possible need to secure a more permanent “home” for some of our events, and the direction our branch should move toward in the future. At the Special Membership Meeting on November 27, it was suggested by some of those present that a special Task Force be formed to focus on these concerns. We will formally act on this idea at the February 23 Membership Meeting and would like to see many of you volunteer to be a part of this group. I hope that you will consider doing so and look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

The "Member Making a Difference Award" is a state award for recognition of a recent-term contribution by an unsung Branch member exemplifying the spirit of AAUW. Eloise is a dedicated and hard-working member of the Fundraising Committee, in part by generating ideas and seeking donations from businesses and individuals. She also tirelessly helps with every aspect of the Book Sale by spending countless hours collecting and sorting books and working at the set-up and sale. A Johnstown Branch Member since 2016, she is a retired elementary teacher with 40 years of service, and an accomplished pianist and organist who plays in many churches and at numerous events in the area.

To Whom It May Concern: I am honored to be awarded the American Association of Women Scholarship. I am a single mother, working full-time and going to school full-time. With different situations going on with money right now, I appreciate being chosen for this scholarship. My goal is to be a successful business owner after I complete the Business Management Associates Degree from Penn Highlands. Thank you again for your gift. Sincerely, Angela Santecroce 53407 Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Class of 2019

visiting legislators, educating the public, holding rallies, writing letters, attending Congressional hearings and asking for municipal resolutions, By June 2018 we had a majority PA legislators onboard to pass HB722 which would have allowed the first step towards a Constitutional Amendment to allow a fair, transparent process in which legislative lines would be drawn by a committee of citizens (not legislators). At that time ONE MAN, the chair of the Government Committe, who had to that point not allowed a committee vote on HB722, added amendments to the bill that basically destroyed the context of the bill. The bill was never voted upon in the PA Congress. What Fair Districts has learned is that to get anything done in PA Congress we have to reform the rules. NO ONE MAN, REPRESENTING ONLY ONE DISTRICT, should stop a vote on a bill that has bi-partisan and public support. So our direction this year is to REFORM THE RULES in the PA Congress, so that no

one man can stop voting in the Congress and that no one party (Republican or Democrat) be allowed to draw legislative lines that TAKES AWAY YOUR VOTE!

Josephine Romani: Outstanding Woman by Maryann Minihan ([email protected])

Our recipient, like most of us, is a daughter, a sister, a wife and a proud mother. To us she is a friend. She joined the American Association of University Women in 1994. From that time she diligently worked toward the goals and served in many capacities for the good of this organization. She served as President from 2004-2010, served as Historian, chaired Hospitality, chaired the Second Tuesday Book Group and co-chaired the Used Book Sale. In 1998 and 2001 she was named the Educational Foundation Named Gift Awardee. She impacted the need for our organization to become an online presence. She truly proved an asset and friend to all in our organization. We are delighted to bestow the 2019 Outstanding Woman Award to Josephine.

Drop in between 11 am and 1 pm for refreshments and information about our work. Members of the board would like to meet you and thank our wonderful tutors. For more information go to http://cambriacountyliteracy.org/

At this point our collections are on par with last year and we get calls regularly from people who have books to donate. Those books will be sorted before the April/May collection and Ann Furlong will once again coordinate sorting dates in the spring. Sorting will continue to be held Monday and Thursday from 1-3 pm. It is also not too early to mark your calendars for the sale itself. This year the dates are June 10 and 11 for setup and June 12-15 for the sale itself. It is work but it is also fun, and a great chance to spend time with other members.

March is Women's History Month and we have a very special program to honor the contributions of women scientists/engineers. On March 25th at 6:30 PM at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, the young women of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown's Society of Women Engineers will present a program highlighting women in science through history. The Society of Women Engineers organization is mentored by AAUW member, Amy Miller. The Women in Science: Making a Difference is open to the public. Bring friends, daughters, grand-daughters. Let us learn about and celebrate the contributions of some of our best women scientists together.

Making a Difference

by Georgia Yeager ([email protected]) It’s hard to imagine that a year has gone by, but March is “renew your membership” month. That’s right! As of March 15, I will again be accepting your checks for $70 for the 2019-20 dues year. Please make checks payable to “AAUW Johnstown Branch” and mail them to Georgia Yeager, 1022 Haverford Street, Johnstown 15905. The last day for dues payment is June 30, 2019. Those who joined last fall at the $40 rate will now owe $70 for the coming year. I am again offering to take dues payments in installments. You can pay $10, $20 or $30 per month – whatever works for you as long as the $70 is paid by June 30. It may seem like a lot of money, but don’t forget all the good your money does: national fellowships and scholarships; lobbying for causes important to girls and women; a national presence and voice for women and women’s issues; and so much more! Ten dollars of our dues also supports similar efforts at the state level in Pennsylvania. The Membership Committee voted this month to begin holding our recruiting efforts and our Meet and Greet in March each year to bring our practices in line with other branches in the state. Since we held a Meet and Greet already this fiscal year (September), we will not repeat that event in March 2019, but we will make a concerted effort to recruit new members this spring. If you know of women who are interested, please forward to me by April 1 their names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses (if you know them). You can also bring prospective members to the March meeting, Scholarship Luncheon, or open program meeting at The Discovery Center in April. Membership materials will be available at those events. The next Meet and Greet will be March 2020. Our current membership is at 81 and 8 of them are Life Members. At our Scholarship and Awards Luncheon in April, we will honor fifty-year memberships for Leora Rager and Rosemary Hagadus. Fifty years of membership in AAUW is quite a milestone! Come to the luncheon to help celebrate Lee and Rosemary. DIRECTORY UPDATE Please correct the address of Elizabeth Thomas in the directory. She lives at 138 Spory Road, Boswell, PA 15531 (not Davidsville). Please add Susan W. Martin Kelly, 410 Princeton Avenue, Johnstown, PA 15905; 539-8003; [email protected]. Ms. Mock is a three-term council woman, and current Deputy Mayor, of the City of Johnstown. She is a strong advocate of the City of Johnstown, working tirelessly to promote the city and its neighborhoods. She is a founding member of the West End Improvement Group, serving as the group’s Secretary/Treasurer. Ms. Mock, along with Council woman Sylvia King, is involved in the rehabilitation of the hockey rink at Roxbury Park. The council women are working on obtaining grants and funding to complete this project. During the summer months, Ms. Mock is involved in the various community garden projects in the city, working tirelessly at the Laurel Avenue Community garden. On summer evenings, she can be seen driving around the West End of Johnstown watering the flower boxes that line the streets and ensuring that the public garden space on Haws Pike is blooming. Ms. Mock also is known to put out a call for volunteers to help weed public space around the city on weekends, especially when there are big events coming up like Thunder in the Valley. Just check Facebook during the spring/summer/fall months and you will probably see a post! If that isn’t enough, Ms. Mock is also actively involved with Vision 2025, United Neighborhoods, and many other projects that aren’t on people’s radar. When she is not working to improve the City of Johnstown, Ms. Mock, a 1979 alum of Cambria Rowe Business College, is an Assistant Vice President and Personal Trust Officer at Ameriserv Financial. She is also a wife, mother of three grown children, and a grandmother.

AAUW Field Trip/Program

AAUW Members A unique opportunity awaits you. In the process of procuring an AAUW Program, Doris Leidy, was informed that Dr. Schoreder and Fran Feyock, the two gentlemen who presen

presented the "Civil War Medicine" program last year, are taking buses to Gettysburg on Saturdays in April and May of this year. The bus trip would include presentations while on the bus and a battlefield tour of Gettysburg. I have taken a battlefield tour with Dr. Schroeder and I highly recommend it. Also, many of you attended the "Civil War Medicine" program last March and I am sure were duly impressed. We have had 30 people (AAUW members and friends/relatives) express interest in this program. So, we have reserved a bus and made lunch plans for the Gettysburg trip on Saturday, May 18th. The following is the information about the trip. Cost of Bus $1300 Speaker cost $303 (they are only charging for one speaker) $1603 The bus holds 55 people; so the cost will depend on the number of people who attend. Of course we can advertise outside the membership. Example: If 30 people attend, the cost will be $54.00/person If 45 people attend the cost will be $36.00person If 50 people attend the cost will be $33.00/person If 55 people attend the cost will be $30.00/person Note: I have rounded up the costs to the nearest dollar. Additional expenses : Lunch from menu at Hoss's in Gettysburg (pay your own)

Tip for bus driver (usually $1-$2 per person)

Tip for speakers (personal decision) Itinerary: Leave Menoher park n ride at 6:00 PM (This location may change) Stop at Sideling Hill on Turnpike Tour battlefield Lunch at Hoss's near battlefield Tour of Cemetery Return to Johnstown 6:30 - 7:00 PM So, if you haven't already expressed a interest in participating in the field trip; please email me your name and the name of any guests. Promote the trip to friends, neighbors, church members, etc. I was told that the bus will drive us to appropriate sites within the park, so walking should not be a concern. The more people that attend, the cheaper the cost of the trip. I plan to advertise to the public on April 1st if we don't have a number closer to the maximum of 55. Payment will be due on April 30th.
