.The Toronto Mails correspondent , tele-
graphing¬
from Montreal on the 18th ult .
says : The sad wreck of the happiness andfuture prospects llfa family well knownand hitherto greatly esteemed among thehigher class Cd of society hero , with whomthey mix - d , will cuusu thu deepest painand surprise when it becomes known thatthe father , Mr . Lewis Anldjo , cashier inthe Hudson Bay Company's office , has em ¬
beZclodII very large amount from the compony and absconded to (the United States .
Mr: Auldjo entered the company's serviceabout seven years since , having been previously beekeeper to a prominent brokerin the city . The salary which his contractentitled him to for the first year was only$500 , but ha performed! his duties so satisfactorily that thu CI'IIII'allYut' the end ofthe year presented him with §200 extra .
His emoluments weri ' subsequently aug ¬
mented until they wore $1,200 or $1,400per annum . Not satisfied , however , tosupport his family in the position whichhis properlY'l1.cquiredmeans would enablehim to do , the defaulter commenced a sys ¬
tem embezzlement almost from his en .
trance into the service , and went on in-creasing the amount year by year up to theaccidental discol'eryof his delinquencies afew days since , in order to Icy out themoney in a lavish expenditure on thosedepending upon him . His defalcationswere concealed by falsification of his books ,
and but for an incident which led to thestartling development of his criminality ,
his dishonest career might have gone onad infimtum . The discovery arose out ofhis obtaining a comparatively small sumof money from the firm of Ogilvio & Cu .
on a bun to which ho attached the signaI
ture of the company . Through either forgetfulness or sumo other cause ho failed toredeem the security , and after thu lapseof some weeks the document wns sentover to the office for payment at a momentwhen he was temporarily absent . Onbeing handed the note of hand , the man .
ager was astonished to think thatthe signature of the Hudson Bay Co .
was: ,floating about for small loans . Horecognized Mr . Auldjo'a handwriting , andon his return he was called on for an ex ¬
planation . Tile latter could not give asatisfactory coo , and the in.Umyci a sus ¬
picions were aroused and ho at once sus-pended him . The next course was tohave his books examined , and so fur asthis has gone it is found that the absconder is $7,400 in default , but how muchmore it may be of course it will takesome time to determine . It is no easytask to make a carefulscrutiny of thebooks ofan establishment engaged insuch gigantic business transactions us theHudson Bay company for a period, ofseven years .
After the revelations which the examination led to the directors of Londonwere cabled for instructions note actwith the defaulter , when an answer cameto prosecute him . On leal'Dinthis bysome means Auldjo cleared across theline ; and is said to be living in 1'lnttsburgwithout any fear of being arrested , as hisoffence unfortunately does not como un-
der¬
the extradition treaty . His familyconsists of his wife , three most ladylikeand handsome daughters , who have hadthe entree of society circles htre , and oneson . It has often been remarked amongtheir most intimate friends how they kejitup such an extravagant appearitnue ladross and style on the moderate moanswhich the head of the family was earning .
Since Mr . Auldjo's hasty departure thefamily have given up their expensive resi ¬
dence in the city and have gone out a fewmiles into the country . Iam assuredthat they are in absolute penury , all themoney illegally abstracted from the Hud
'¬
son Bay Company having been spent al-
most¬
as fast as it was obtained . Thu af-
fair¬
has been concealed in a wonderfulmanner . .

TUG LAW GRAB QUESTION DISPOSED OX .
The followingcomm uti ication was readfrom Messrs . Drake d Juckaon in.reply ; tothe questillnof the committee 'n'ppbintdd towait on them in the matter of the west
tine of Government street ::II
To the Mayor awl Council .II
GENTLEMEN :Iii reply to the question IIof the committee with respect to thestreet lines whether it iia necessary that II
Mr . Russell's' building should be built enthe new line which thu Act of 1881 en ¬
able the corporation to lay down as thewest Hue of Government street " we are ofopinion it is not , as it is optional with thecorporation to carry out the provisions of
that Act or not .
The map as registered under the Act of1S30 , defines n line for the west side ofGovernment street , and the corporationcan give to any lot holder a line in ac ¬
cordance with such registered map , anda lot holder under section 5 is entitledto have that line given him .
Yours , obdtly .DRAKE & JAcKSON .
Coun . McLean wished to ascertain whogave the line for the new post.offieo front .
Tlo was of opinion that it was not givenby order of the Council , but that Mr .
Ticdeman: defined it, without any4referen.eewhatever to the Council or city.aurveyor .
SUI'eralcuuucillors were of the sameopinion .
Coun . Wrifjlesworth . moved that thecommunication be received and
k
tiled .
The question for thu Council to decidewas whether Mr . Russell should take theold line or that of Mr . Levy's brick build .
ing . As this building only encroachedon the old line some three or four inches ,
and as the city barrister had decided thatthe council could establish any line theypleased , ho would move that Mr . Russellbo instructed to build on the lillu of that . .
building , and that that line ba adoptedfrom Johnson to Yates streets .
Seconded by Coun . Boyd . .
Coun . McLoan wished to hold the Do-
minion¬
Government responsible for theencroachment of the post office buildingon the street . With every desire tonlig) " Mr 1 ". u"11 hcMiH sift but cometo the conclusion that it would be muchbetter to confine him to the original line .
The Council had been treated very badlyby the architect of the post office build ,ing and ho was not at all disposed to sub Imit to such treatment . Adopting the old i
line would strengthen the hands of theCouncil in dealing with the post office
I
line , and they would be enabled to keepclear of any difficulty in the future Theold line should certainly be adhered to .
Ho would move in amendment that theoriginal line be adopted .
Seconded by Coun . Kinsman .
Uoun . \Vicltus was lf> opinion that if II
any question of this solrt should coma upI I
in the future it could bo dealt with on its I
merits , and this decision would not inter Ifere with it . He would support theamendment .
Coun . Boyd considered that the streetwould look butter if all the buildings . fromJohnson to Yules street were on a linewith Levy's briok building . '
.JCoun . Wrifileawurili would establish the
line asked for in his motion from Johnson. ) to Yates only . There would be jogson, the street anyway , mid one more orless would be of little consequence . TheCouncil I"uldnot commit themselves byAdopting the line of Levy's brick building .
Amunilinent curried , three to two .
or-EMh'o YATES STREET .
Coun . Wriglcsworth referred to a communication from Mr. Pearse on the quostin of opening up Yates street throughto the C.d buru B.iy road undu.iked if any
,
action h\d been taken on it . ' I
Coun . McLean ha.im'lde several en ¬II
quiries about the matter , especially of the,
U . B . Co . , and hid found that seriousdifficulty would bo encountered in opening '
up the street . The cost would be threeor four thousand dollars And this wouldIbe much more than the finances of , the ii
'
city would bear at present .
Cuun . Wrigles worth did not want thoI I
city to spend ono dollar in opening upYntes street at present . All 'Ik d forWitS to arrange with Mr . Pearce for theline of s'rcet and for the city surveyor tomark this line on the ground .
Coun . McLean thought that Coun .
Wriglosworth did not understand thequestion , and ho was uropiny in the dark: .
The new Act gave the Council power toobtain land anywhere and pay fur it byarbitration . He objected to doing ; this atpresent as there would bo but little advantage in opening (the street just , at thistime . 1 he cost would be a serious , ob-
jection¬
as there was a ' rock to blast nwayas high us the room in which they were
.,.
seated .
The clerk then read the communica(tion in question and said, that it had beenplaced in the hands of the street committee and that the matter was' in abeyanceas Mr . Monro , of the II.B.Co .'
had referred it to the homo authorities .
Coun . Wrijles\vorth( did not see whythe city surveyor should not mark out theline of the street . He would thereforemove that ho be instructed to ' do sothrough Mr Pearse's property . The streetwould not touch the H . B . Co's land atall .
Seconded by Coun . Vigelius and carried .
