SPECIFICATION CLAUSE

Kingspan nilvent™ should be described inspecifications as:- The breathable membrane shall beKingspan nilvent™ comprising a non-microporous,laminated 3-layer polyolefin construction and shall beapplied in accordance with the instructions issued byKingspan Insulation Limited.

Details also available in NBS PLUS.NBS users should refer to clauses:H60 240, H61 240, H62 240, H30 350 andH31 350 (Standard and Intermediate).

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

DESIGN FOR HORIZONTAL INSTALLATION ON ACONTINUOUS SUBSTRATEIn these cases, the breathable sarking membrane isinstalled either under counter battens, which provide achannel for water drainage (figures 1a-1c), or insituations with a sarking board under a natural slateroof, directly under the slates (as neither tile battensnor counter battens are used) (figures 1d and 1e).

The membrane is laid taut and joints between runs ofmembrane are sealed with tape, if required.

DESIGN FOR VERTICAL INSTALLATION ON ADISCONTINUOUS SUBSTRATEKingspan nilvent™ is installed in vertical runs, fromeaves to eaves, in one length, under counter battens(see Figure 2a). Installed in this way there will be nolaps along the length of a run and laps between runscan be formed over a rafter where counter-battenscan secure them and make an airtight joint. The membrane should be laid taut with no valleysbetween rafters.

NB it is theoretically possible to install the membrane vertically with avalley between rafters, however this adds no technical benefit, willprove cumbersome and has the disadvantage of allowing greaterwind induced membrane movement (see section on ‘Wind InducedMembrane Movement’).

DESIGN FOR HORIZONTAL INSTALLATION ON ADISCONTINUOUS SUBSTRATEIn situations where there is no continuous surface (seeFigure 3a-3c) the breathable sarking membrane canbe draped over the rafters or counter battens toprovide a channel for water drainage. There shouldbe a minimum 10 mm gap between the membraneand the tile/slate batten to afford a drainage channelfor any penetrating rain. No counter-batten is requiredabove the Kingspan nilvent™ as water can freelydrain under the tile/slate battens. NB it is possible to have the membrane laid taut with counter battensabove. This is not as practical and incurs the cost penalty of extracounter battens. It does, however, have the advantage of allowingreduced wind induced membrane movement (see section on ‘WindInduced Membrane Movement’).

In these situations, it is not at all practical to seal thelaps between the runs of Kingspan nilvent™ and theroof should be considered as being unsealed.

GENERALKingspan nilvent™ meets all of therecommendations and requirements for underlaysdetailed in BS 5534: Part 1: 1997 (Code of practicefor slating and tiling. Design) and NFRC TechnicalBulletin 6.

WATERPROOFINGIf installed as per the instructions given in thisdocument Kingspan nilvent™ will give a completelywatertight structure. Kingspan nilvent™ is inherentlycompletely watertight, being non-microporous, andhas the added advantage of self-sealing around nailpenetrations. These properties mean that Kingspannilvent™ can be safely used even in constructionswith a large number of nail penetrations through themembrane e.g. where natural slates are naileddirectly into a sarking board.

VENTILATION AND CONDENSATION RISKMost buildings contain air that is more humid than the airoutside of that building. This humidity differential drivesthe moisture from the inside to the outside of a building’sstructure. When the moisture is confronted with arelatively cold and impermeable layer it may condense. In pitched roofs, sarking felt can be such a layer.

The traditional way of avoiding the risk of condensationin roofs is to ventilate the moisture away by introducingairflow directly above the insulation layer and below thesarking felt. Modern remedies for roofs include the use ofbreathable membranes to replace sarking felt.

Breathable membranes negate the need for ventilationdirectly above the insulation layer. They do thisbecause they have a low vapour resistance, whichallows water vapour to escape through the breathablemembrane to the outside of the building. Recentstudies have shown that ventilation directly above aninsulation layer can reduce its thermal efficiency.

BS 5250: 1989 (1995) (Code of practice for controlof condensation in buildings) states that the vapourresistance of the breathable sarking membrane mustnot exceed 0.25 MN.s/g. Kingspan nilvent™ hasa vapour resistance of 0.11 MN.s/g. Any watervapour reaching Kingspan nilvent™ escapesthrough it without condensing.

There must be adequate provision for vapour todisperse to atmosphere outside of Kingspannilvent™.

For horizontal installation on a continuous substrateand for vertical installation, Kingspan Insulationrecommends the use of minimum 25 mm thick counter-battens, to create a suitable airspace above thebreathable membrane. By keeping the tile/slatebattens clear of Kingspan nilvent™, counter-battensencourage air movement. They also allow the dustand debris from tiling and slating to slide down theslope and emerge at the eaves. The use of counter-battens also makes it easier to achieve interconnectingairspaces at interruptions to the main roof area –such as roof windows, chimneys, dormers, hips, andvalleys.

For horizontal installation on a discontinuous substrate, counter battens are not necessary to provide airmovement. As long as Kingspan nilvent™ is drapedsuch that there is a minimum 10 mm gap between themembrane and the tile/slate batten, the void socreated will be sufficient.

With some roof coverings (e.g. pantiles, natural slatesand cambered plain tiles), irregularities in theirsurfaces should allow sufficient natural ventilation toremove moisture from the space above the breathablemembrane. With other roof coverings (e.g. sheetmetal, interlocking tiles and artificial slates) provisionof vents to encourage ventilation may be necessary.

Natural slates nailed through Kingspan nilvent™ intoa sarking board without counter battens or slatebattens provide for enough air movement to dispersevapour because of the gaps created by theirregularity of natural slates. Artificial slates may notbe suitable for direct fixing to a sarking boardbecause the regularity of their shape does not providefor enough air movement to disperse vapour. It maybe necessary to put counterbattens and slate battensin place under artificial slates to provide an airspacefor ventilation.

The requirement for under-tile/slate ventilation shouldbe assessed to BS 5250: 1989 (1995) (Code ofpractice for control of condensation in buildings), asshould the requirement of a vapour control layer.

Ventilation beneath the underlay is not required andshould be avoided.

WIND INDUCED MEMBRANE MOVEMENTWind blowing over a pitched roof generates positiveand negative air pressures. A roof underlay isrequired to reduce the wind loading on thetiles/slates in order to stop them from becomingdetached from the roof. These air pressures can causeunderlays to move up and down. This effect isincreased if the underlay is draped rather thaninstalled taut.

TILE/SLATE DAMAGEUnder extreme conditions, if the membrane stretchesas it moves up and down, it can knock against thetiles/slates and cause damage. The upwarddeflection of the underlay under maximum negativepressure must be small enough to avoid contact withthe underside of the tiles/slates.

Kingspan nilvent™ has mechanical propertiessufficient to prevent this effect, given the wind upliftforces prevalent in the UK and Ireland.

WIND NOISEUnder extreme conditions, underlays can produce anoise irritating to occupants as it moves up anddown. Kingspan nilvent™ is quiet under windloading.

MANSARD ROOFS/WALLSKingspan nilvent™ can be used for the constructionof insulated tiled or slated mansard roofs / walls. Itsapplication on such contracts is identical to thestandard specification, which is given here.

FIRE STOPSCurrent Building Regulations / Standards should beconsidered with regard to the requirements for and/orprovision of fire stops.

AIRTIGHTNESS & SEALED vs. UNSEALEDCONSTRUCTIONSAs we drive for buildings with lower and lowerU-values, in order to save on wasteful heat losses, thecomponent of heat lost from a building directlythrough its fabric becomes less as a proportion oftotal heat lost. The proportion lost by accidental air-leakage becomes more significant. This air-leakage isnot the same as deliberate ventilation. This accidentalair-leakage into a roof can be lessened by sealing theroof construction to make it as airtight as possible.

Recent research has proven that the sealed roofapproach yields a more energy efficient roof as theimpacts of incidental infiltrating cold air are negated. Therefore, if creating an unventilated roof, it ispreferable to fully seal all joints in the breathablesarking membrane with tape. 75 mm wide doublesided acrylic adhesive tape should be used forsealing joints in Kingspan nilvent™.

However, there is limited point in carefully sealing aroof structure if the specified breathable membrane isnot airtight. Kingspan nilvent™ is inherently 100%airtight, being non-microporous, and has the addedadvantage of self-sealing around nail penetrations.

The ideal is to install Kingspan nilvent™ in amanner that is practical and maximises the ability toachieve an airtight construction.

The use of horizontal runs of Kingspan nilvent™ isby far the most practical method of installation, however, it is difficult to achieve air-tightness unlessthe Kingspan nilvent™ is to be laid in thisorientation onto a continuous surface (see Figures 1a-1e). The taping of breathable membrane joints isconsiderably easier to achieve if this is the case.

The use of vertical runs of Kingspan nilvent™ is notas practical a method of installation as horizontalruns, however, it is easy to achieve air-tightness as thelaps between runs are sealed by the counter-battensthat are installed over them (see Figure 2a).

If the sealing of the roof is not deemed to beimperative, horizontal installation without sealing jointswith tape will always be the most practical solutionregardless of whether it is laid onto a continuous ordiscontinuous surface (see Figures 1a-1e and 3a-3c).However, it must be stressed that these roofconfigurations are not recommended on thermalefficiency grounds.

INSTALLATION IN A VERTICAL ORIENTATION ON ADISCONTINUOUS SUBSTRATEFor ease of installation, thread a wood or metal barthrough the core of the Kingspan nilvent™ roll andset it on bearers on the scaffold platform. The leadingedge of the Kingspan nilvent™ can then be takenup and over the ridge and down to the oppositeeaves.

Fit an eaves strip of a UV-resistant material tooverhang the eaves / fascia by 50-60 mm. Lap theKingspan nilvent™ logo-up over the eaves strip(if required), with the bottom edge of the Kingspannilvent™ in line with the top of the fascia. Kingspannilvent™ should be laid such that it is taut in bothhorizontal and vertical directions. Each run ofKingspan nilvent™ should be installed in a singlepiece from eaves to eaves. Temporarily tack in placewith staples or clout nails, cut to length with a sharpbladed knife, move sideways and repeat the process.

The second run of Kingspan nilvent™ should lapover the first be not less than 100 mm and bepositioned so as to coincide with a rafter position. The printed tramlines on the top surface of Kingspannilvent™ indicate a distance of 150 mm. Theselaps should be secured and sealed by the fixing ofcounter-battens (min. 25 mm deep) as workprogresses across the roof. Counter battens should befixed at 300 mm centres.

Continue installation across the roof in the samemanner, then install tile/slate battens over the wholearea installed.

NB Kingspan nilvent™ can be laid in a vertical orientation with adrape. However, counter battens will still be required to give aneffective seal. If sealing of the roof is not required and counterbattens are not specified, it will prove a lot easier to install Kingspannilvent™ horizontally with a drape.

ABUTMENTSAt any abutment, chimney stack or similar roofpenetration, apply 1.5 mm butyl rubber tape (e.g.glazing tape) to the abutment. Turn up the Kingspannilvent™ at least 50 mm under the flashing andsecure it with a counter batten/tiling batten pressedfirmly against the abutment and fixed to the end rafteror trimmer.

In constructions with a sarking board under a slatedroof with no counter battens or slate battens, theabove method is followed without the batten to securethe membrane.
