1. Success Story GVSU receives con nua on grant from VAWA, from GVNow, October 2, 2013

Grand Valley received a three‐year con nua on grant through the federal Violence Against Women Act to further its efforts preven ng da ng violence, domes c violence, sexual assault and stalking crimes on campus. The $281,250 grant from the U.S. Department of Jus ce, Office on Violence Against Women will con nue the work coordinated by the GVSU Women’s Center through 2016. The Women’s Center received an ini al VAWA grant in 2011. Grant coordinator Theresa Rowland said the con nua on means the work accomplished over the past two years will con nue and will be enhanced. Since the ini al grant was received, student reports of sexual violence have increased. From 2011, there were eight incidents, and nine in 2012. Prior to the grant in 2010, there were two reported incidents. Rowland, who chairs the Campus Violence Preven on Team, said the increase is likely due to increased efforts to train Grand Valley police officers and other staff, and educate students how to report an incident. Under the con nua on grant, vic m services and bystander programming will be enhanced as will programs from a CVPT subcommi ee, the Men’s Group, a student group focused on gender‐based violence preven on. New community partners have been added: Grand Rapids Police Department and the O awa County Prose‐cutor’s Office, Vic m Assistance Unit. Other community partners are the YWCA of West Central Michigan, Lakeshore Alliance Against Domes c and Sexual Assault, Kent County Domes c Violence Community Report Team, and O awa County Sheriff’s Office. 2. GRC Funded Proposal Library Funded Proposal Usage Guidelines

GRC obtains funded proposals on a regular basis and provides them to members, free of charge, through the funded proposal library. Proposals listed here have come to GRC through individual requests to federal agen‐cies or to successful principal inves gators (PIs). They are intended only for use by GRC members.

GRC asks that those who request and receive copies of funded proposals not make them available online, share them with individuals other than the prospec ve grant team on the campus, or disseminate them for general use, such as at workshops or conferences.

Prospec ve PIs should be encouraged to contact awardees personally. A dialogue with a successful PI can provide insight into the applica on process that is more beneficial than reviewing a cold copy of a funded proposal. GRC staff members are willing to locate and request funded proposals not found in the proposal library, and are adept at facilita ng contact between funded PIs and prospec ve applicants from GRC mem‐ber campuses.

Only proposal abstracts are accessible in the proposal library. For a copy of the full proposal, to share a copy of a funded proposal or for assistance in loca ng proposals not contained here, contact the Office of Sponsored Programs.

GVSU receives school counselor grant, from GVNow, October 2, 2013

Grand Valley State University received a $10,000 grant to enhance its school counseling program. The School Counselor Graduate Program Planning Grant was received from the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) in partnership with the Kresge Founda on. Shawn Bultsma, program director, said the money will help Grand Valley graduates be be er prepared as school counselors to help K‐12 students be socially, academically and financially ready for postsecondary ed‐uca on. “Professional school counselors are uniquely posi oned to build a school’s college‐going culture and prepare all students for postsecondary educa on, especially students from low‐income families and those who are first in their family to go to college,” said Bultsma. Bultsma said the grant will allow Grand Valley’s school counseling faculty to align curriculum with the Eight Components of College and Career Readiness, which include academic planning for college and career readi‐ness, extracurricular engagement, affordability planning, and understanding of admission processes among others. “The eight components allow K‐12 school counselors to own a cri cal piece of educa on reform,” said Bultsma. “School counselors are the ones responsible for helping students nurture their dreams and for help‐ing them create pathways to those dreams.” For more informa on, contact Shawn Bultsma at (616) 331‐6648 or [email protected].

KCON research projects touch different popula ons, from Forum, October 21, 2013

Current research projects by Kirkhof College of Nursing facul‐ty members and students are reaching different West Michi‐gan popula ons.

Rebecca Davis, associate professor of nursing, and her team are studying how people with Alzheimer’s disease find their way to a des na on.

In Muskegon, Cindy Be erly, a doctoral nursing student, is leading a clinical project that could help decrease the number of low birth weight and preterm babies in that area.

Davis is using a projected virtual reality simula on of a re re‐ment community and eye‐tracking glasses to collect data. The computer program was designed by the University of Michi‐gan Virtual 3D Lab, based on a floor plan and design from an area con nuing care facility.

People in Davis’s study wear the glasses and move the joys ck to guide their virtual self through a long, wind‐ing hallway to a des na on. The glasses track where the eye looks; Davis is collec ng data on whether color‐ful cues placed on the walls are helpful during naviga on.

Davis is s ll seeking people for the study, both those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and those who do not have the disease but are 62 years old or older. People interested can contact Cathy Weisbeck at (616) 331‐5669 or [email protected].

Davis earned a $316,000 grant from the Na onal Ins tutes of Health to conduct the study. Her research team includes undergraduate and graduates nursing students.

Be erly’s clinical disserta on focuses on increasing the health literacy of women who par cipate in the Mus‐kegon Area Pregnancy Pathways program.

Be erly works with Pathways clients to help them be er understand what health care resources are availa‐ble, and how to advocate for themselves. “It’s also making sure they implement their health literacy compre‐hension,” Be erly said. “Are they following direc ons if they understand, and ac ng on what their provider is telling them?”

She is using a tool, “Ask Me 3,” developed several years ago by the Na onal Pa ent Safety Founda on, and transforming it for her clients. Ask Me 3 encourages pa ents to write down three ques ons before they see a health care provider.

Muskegon has a higher percentage of low birth weight babies, children in poverty and people who are unin‐sured than Michigan and the U.S. Be erly said those factors, and others, contribute to high‐risk pregnancies.

4. Grants Resource Center News Growth in Founda on Giving, from GrantWeek, October 7, 2013 In a new report, Key Facts on U.S. Founda ons, the Founda on Center found that total U.S. founda on giving reached an es mated $50.9 billion in 2012—an increase of almost $2 billion from 2011 levels. This report ex‐amines the overall size of the U.S. founda on community as well as key trends in founda on giving. Accord‐ing to the report, top priori es for large funders were health and educa on, with almost half of grant funds going to these areas. The report also found that about 35 percent of grant awards from the largest funders were intended to help the economically disadvantaged.

The author of the report, Steven Lawrence, the Founda on Center's director of research, notes that, while "it may not be the boom years of the late 1990s or mid‐2000s, the good news is that it looks like U.S. founda‐ons will con nue to provide a stable source of support for new ideas and ongoing programs that improve

lives around the world."

NIH Breaks with Health Science Educa on, from GrantWeek, October 7, 2013 According to an ar cle in Science, the Na onal Ins tutes of Health (NIH) has closed its Office of Science Edu‐ca on (OSE). This closure is likely to take the Science Educa on Partnership Award (SEPA) with it; however, NIH intends to fund the mul year awards it already has in progress. Principal Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak said that NIH's formal mission has never been to support pre‐college science educa on, and that "this unusual year in which we lost $1.5 billion overnight caused us to rethink many of our priori es, and this was one of the many things we had to rethink."

NIH has agreed to con nue to send out requested copies of OSE curriculum supplements, both printed and electronic. The supply of printed copies is expected to last un l next spring. OSE's other ac vi es will not be maintained, though an NIH staff member said, in response to a Council of Councils ques on about the possi‐bility of reviving SEPA, that SEPA would need to be reformed significantly to "be aligned with the overall NIH mission in support of workforce development."

NAS Hosts Convoca on on Higher Ed and STEM, from GrantWeek, October 21, 2013

The Na onal Academy of Sciences recently hosted a conference in Washington, D.C., Research Universi es and the Future of America: A Na onal Convoca on on Breakthrough Ac ons, which addressed how the na‐on’s postsecondary ins tu ons can be er engage industry and the federal government in the development

of next genera on U.S. labor. Remarks were made by college and university presidents (members of the As‐socia on of Public and Land‐grant Universi es and American Associa on of Universi es) and federal officials, including Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

According to the speakers, 50 to 80 percent of the na on’s gross domes c product can be a ributed to the development of new science, technology, engineering and mathema cs innova ons. But, the U.S. s ll stands at 29th in the world with respect to federal obliga ons for research and development (R&D). Unfortunately, industry is not in a much be er posi on as its focus persists on the “D” in R&D. To remedy this, a call was made for the Na onal Science Founda on to strengthen programs that encourage industrial support for re‐search. Another key recommenda on was for postsecondary ins tu ons to become more legisla vely so‐phis cated in promo ng their interests on Capitol Hill.
