Home is ....? One thing is certain: A home that you love is priceless. Islay Pickup, a student who calls Brighton her home, has undertaken a photography project in the city, asking passers-by what home means to them. A smell? A name? Or a taste? She then photographed them with their one-word answers. Ms Pickup was inspired by Gillian Wearings series of photographs entitled Signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what someone else wants you to say.

Broken or Damaged Windows?Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks?

Want The Latest Energy Saving Glass? All Glazing Backed By Our

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Dont replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows Service With A Smile! Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that its all about service. Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But its not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas

and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and

family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

Coffin Mew strengthens coastal offer by opening a Brighton officeAdvertorial

South coast law firm Coffin Mew has strengthened its south coast offer opening an office in Brighton and appointing four senior lawyers.

Coffin Mews Brighton office, the firms fifth, opened in May. It offers a full range of services to fast growing entrepreneurial businesses and to individuals and families living in one of the most vibrant and diverse cities on the south coast.

The Brighton office is being led by Partner and Head of the Coffin Mews Commercial Property team Nick Leavey. Nick joined Coffin Mew in 2014 from DMH Stallard.

He is joined by Employment Associate Amy Richardson, who joined Coffin Mew in May 2015 from Adams & Remers, and Mirren McGinley, a Solicitor specialising in Commercial and Residential property who joined the firm in January 2015. Elizabeth Gibbons also joins the team as its office manager. Mirren and Elizabeth join Coffin Mew from DMH Stallard.

Mark OHalloran, Commercial Partner joins the firm from Sussex law firm Stevensdrake. Mark will work across Coffin Mews south

coast offices. Coffin Mew is currently recruiting further people into its Brighton office.

The office is supported by the firms 140 lawyers along the south coast delivering expert advice in a variety of areas including corporate/commercial, commercial property, litigation, insolvency, employment, residential conveyancing, wills, trust and probate and family law.

Nick Leavey said: Coffin Mew has a strong reputation for being entrepreneurial and forward thinking. Brighton, with its rapidly growing economy and high standard of living is a natural fit to the firms already strong client offering.

Brighton is home to some 1,500 young entrepreneurial businesses in the creative, digital, IT, green tech, financial services and life sciences sectors, being named silicon beach. These businesses are looking for a like-minded law firm on their doorstep.

Coffin Mew is already making an impact in the city. It is advising

the Brighton West Pier Trust on the 45m i360 development that will feature a 138-metre observation tower, restaurant, retail and exhibition space.

Coffin Mew is a firm with a bold vision. The firm is looking to open further offices and to double its turnover over the next 24 months.

Miles Brown, Coffin Mews Managing Partner, explains: Successful businesses want to work with successful advisers. It is important that we grow our businesses to enable us to attract the very best people and to deliver the services our clients demand.

Growth will come from acquisition, merging with ambitious

and exceptional smaller firms, and from organic growth. The firm will double its current turnover to 20m over the next two years.

Coffin Mew was established 120 years ago and currently has 140 lawyers, professional advisers and business staff across five offices Brighton, Portsmouth, Southampton, Gosport and London. The firm grew by 18 per cent in 2014 and completed some 850 separate commercial property transactions.

The petition asks for time-restricting bus lanes to be considered

A newly-elected councillor has launched a petition calling for the release of data about the impact of the changes to Lewes Road.

Councillor Daniel Yates, who is the Labour-led councils chair of the health and wellbeing board, is asking for the release of all monitoring documents produced since November 2013, with data about air quality, health, travel times, and accident rates.

He is also asking for the council in a full review of the Lewes Road scheme - to consider time-restricting the bus lanes and introducing measures to lessen any impact on surrounding roads.

Cllr Yates said: I think its crucial that local people are able to fully demonstrate their views on this. I could have simply requested a report, but local feeling ran very high over the Lewes Road scheme and its

important for people to be able to show their support for this.

This use of the councils e-petition service by a councillor is a novel one. Current guidance states that councillors are not allowed to sign petitions; it does not, however, prevent them starting one. The petition has been been signed by nearly 500 people in a week.

The move has been criticised as an unnecessary, ill-informed waste of time and money by Green councillors, who originally implemented the scheme.

Councillor Phlim Mac Cafferty, convenor of the Green Group, said: The Lewes Road scheme continues to be subject to extensive ongoing monitoring and, by all measures, its been a success.

More journeys are being made by bus, taxi and bike and fewer journeys are being made by car, bus journeys are now quicker and more reliable.

There is no significant displacement of traffic to other routes and significantly, air quality, dire for so many years along this road, is finally showing improvement.

Brighton and Hove Albions official charity has secured the biggest contract in its history in a deal worth about 2.4 million over three years.

    Albion in the Community (AITC)

won the exclusive right to deliver the governments National Citizen Service (NCS) programme across Brighton and Hove after seeing off strong competition in a bidding process.

The NCS is a government-funded personal and social development programme aimed at 15- to 17-year-olds, which gives teenagers the chance to gain new skills for their future.

It also encourages them to take a more active role in their local community.

AITC began delivering the NCS scheme in 2012 initially to 30 local teenagers.

The numbers involved have grown each year and the next programme will work with 180 young people.

Within two years that figure will grow to more than 600 for the summer programme alone - rising to more than 800 by 2018.

The original deal with NCS recently drew to a close, but AITC successfully re-bid - this time to become the schemes sub-contractor for Brighton and Hove; the charity will now exclusively deliver the programme within the city.

AITC will continue to work with young people from all walks of

life, including teenagers facing significant challenges resulting from their backgrounds. Pupils from public schools and local colleges will also be among those targeted by the AITCs NCS team.

The programme is fully inclusive and is open to young people with disabilities or special educational needs (up to the age of 25).

It represents a significant milestone for AITC and further establishes the charity as one of the areas key community schemes.

Dan Garrett, AITCs NCS programme manager, was delighted the charity was able to secure such a prestigious and financially rewarding partnership.

He said: This is the largest contract that AITC has ever been awarded. It is a really exciting time.

This will see significant growth of the programme, helping many beneficiaries within our local community while generating significant roles for both current and new colleagues to get involved within the project and its various delivery models.

Michael Edwards, AITC chief executive, was full of praise for the NCS team. He said: A lot of work went into this and it is brilliant news for the charity to secure the NCS contract.

The NCS team has done fantastically and the result will be a huge boost to AITC.

For more information about the NCS, including how to take part or get support for your project, contact Dan Garrett by calling 01273 878220 or emailing [email protected].

    Cat Fletcher, a recycling campaigner

Plans for a Freegle depotfrom shipping containers

A recycling campaigner is appealing for help to create a sorting depot for re-usable goods out of shipping containers.

Cat Fletcher, who runs Brighton Freegle - the popular online project that has 22,000 members - has launched a crowd-funding appeal to buy eight containers. These will then provide secure storage on disused pop-up sites.

Ms Fletcher is currently working out of a large storage base at the Circus Street Market provided by Cathedral Developments, from which she intercepted and re-distributed 250 tonnes of goods in the last year.

She said: Cathedral gave me space in there for a couple of months to get the materials for the Waste House and I was in

there for two-and-a-half years. But Im having to move out at

the end of June when the sites redeveloped.

This project expansion will enable us to intercept more re-usable goods and provide a more effective reuse service for the whole city.

The containers will enable us to move the depot every few years from one development site to another with the minimum of fuss.

We have eight shipping containers earmarked for the project. We just need to raise the 10,000 to purchase and deliver them.

The plans have been praised by Green councillors and by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion. Phlim Mac Cafferty, convenor of the Green Group, said: One persons trash is another persons treasure and this project

will help to match these up.We wish this visionary project

every success and urge supporters to make a contribution to crowd funding this important campaign for our city.

Cleaning up litter costs the taxpayer about 1bn a year and simply far too much of this is perfectly usable.

Ms Lucas said: I sincerely hope that this fantastic project gets the funding required to expand.

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hoves unwanted dogs. This week is Brandy.

    Factle:

Brandy is a nine-year-old female black Labrador.

She was in her last home for six years, we would love to find her a forever home without spending too long at the centre as she craves human companionship.

Brandy is such a sweet girl with people she knows and loves to have a fuss.

As Brandy is not comfortable around dogs she needs to be the only dog in the home and prefers quiet walks.

She also needs a home with a garden so she can sniff around and play ball off the lead.

Brandy was not happy being left alone in her previous home so new owners would need to build this up gradually.

Can you offer Brandy a home? Please call 01273 452576

Brighton & Hove is a city of contrasts; areas of extreme

auence sit next to areas of deprivation, with some

residents experiencing signicant inequality in terms of

access to suitable housing, health and life expectancy,

    and work and learning opportunities.

Brighton & Hove has one of the highest averages for house prices outside London, coming within the top 10 local authorities.

High rental prices within the private rented sector mean that

aording to meet rental commitments each month becomes

    unsustainable for many households.

    How Rough Sleepers are Counted

The ocial rough sleepers gure is a snapshot taken on one night and often falls well short of what we know to be the true gure.

It correctly does not include people in hostels or shelters, people in campsites or other sites used for recreational purposes or organised protest, squatters or travellers.

In March 2015 a count carried out by homelessness charities and the City Council identied

132 men and womenwho were sleeping rough.

In 2012 BIFFA, a specialist waste management company, reported 20 incidences of nding individuals in waste containers.

People have reported sleeping in cars, under upturned boats on the beach, underneath the pier and even in wheelie bins and refuse containers.

    THE SITUATION NATIONALLY

To receive help from the local authority you must be deemed to be in priority need:

You may be eligible for help from the local council if you:

Those who are not eligible often have to nd their own solutions (such as sofa surng with family or friends) and some have no choice but to sleep rough.

There is no place for homelessness in the 21st Century.

The key to delivering that vision is prevention agencies working together to support those at risk of homelessness.

BHT believes that nobody should be sleeping rough on the streets of Brighton & Hove, one

of the wealthiest cities in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

It is to our collective shame that in recent years the number of men and women who are street homeless in this city has increased. Sleeping rough can be a dangerous and traumatising experience.

Many people who sleep rough suer from multiple health conditions, such as mental health problems and physical illnesses.

It is our ambition that by 2020, we will have reached the point

where nobody has to be street homeless in Brighton & Hove.

the Brighton and Hove City Council and partner

organisations in the city, often at short notice.

Last winter, which was mild by comparison to previous winters, shelters were open for 11 nights and provided 274 bed spaces for 79 dierent people.

It can feel like you get addicted to being homeless, this is it, this is all you can expect.

Operating from First Base, the Emergency Assessment Centre is a partnership between

Brighton Housing Trust, Sussex Police, CRI, and Brighton & Hove City Council, providing a

safe space where specialist workers from dierent organisations can work together to achieve

positive outcomes for clients in terms of health and accommodation.

The Emergency Assessment Centre targets its work on people sleeping rough who are not accessing any support services, have mental health and/or substance misuse issues, and are not engaging with accommodation services or do not have a realistic plan for ending their rough sleeping. The shared aim of all agencies involved is to reduce the risk of harm to people by ending their period of rough sleeping and

supporting them to access safe accommodation.

Nikki Homewood, BHT's director of services, said: "BHT aims to combat the worst immediate aspects of homelessness by the provision of basic, life-sustaining services at First Base Day Centre. We provide the basic amenities that most of us take for granted: food, company, washing facilities, clean and dry clothes. In partnership with the NHS and others, First Base ensures that men and women sleeping on the streets of Brighton and Hove can access basic health care."

Some facts about the work of First Base Day Centre: 20,000 meals are provided annually; 30,000 cups of tea are consumed; 1,300 mobile phones are charged; homeless people took 8,000 showers; 1,560 pairs of socks were provided to homeless people.

Through this initiative, First Base is able to access funds held by the Rough Sleepers Street Services and Relocation Team to pay for the costs associated with supporting people to relocate to an area where there are better opportunities available to them than in Brighton & Hove. This means people are sleeping rough for less time before accessing accommodation.

As I write this (Tuesday), my Twitter-meter has exploded. Every tweet is about Sepp Blatter, the Dark Overlord of world football a man who turned shoulder-shrugging into an art form finally finding the exit door at FIFA.

Be careful what you wish for is a phrase that springs to mind. Its one thing wanting Blatter out, its another thing knowing

exactly who the right person is to take over.

One cant help but draw parallels with this and the tawdry Bill Archer story from 18 years ago. Lets hope FIFA finds its own trusted Knight sooner rather than later.

    The Albion Roar

    Alan Wares@albionroar

The free-agent list is always of interest to fans, and for Albion supporters, the name Robert Lester Zamora better known as Bobby has got many fans excited.

For the first time in his career, the former England international is without a club, and with the 34-year strikers future up in the air, many Albion fans are hoping he will return to the club where he made his name.

Three seasons, two title-winning campaigns, 136 appearances and 83 goals have meant that Zamora is considered among the Seagulls greatest ever forwards, but would the expectations be too great if he was to pull on the blue and

white stripes again?Whether it was spectacular

efforts from range, sublime finishes in and around the box, or finding the back of the net thanks to an almost telepathic understanding with full-back Paul Watson from set pieces, Zamora was a goal-scoring machine for Albion.

Thirteen years have passed, and his game has changed. Those expecting him to roll back the years would be disappointed. He now plays more of a hold-up role, bringing others into play, but his quality means that with another striker alongside

him to score he could be a real asset to the side without being expected to register a goal every other game.

Of course, there are numerous other factors to take account of when talking about a 34-year old Zamora. Injury concerns and wage demands are key amongst them, and the fact Chris

OGrady already performs a similar role up front means he may have to make way for the move to happen.

    However, his top-flight experience in

the dressing room would be a benefit to the side. After a disappointing season, it would be a massive morale boost for fans to hear Number 25, Bobby Zamora at the Amex, though hed have to prise that shirt off Kazenga LuaLua first!

    Bradley Stratton@BradStrat

When the ball hits the goal, could it be Zamora next season?

Ive just watched a short clip of Motherwell fans singing The Beatles classic Twist and Shout after their 3-1 victory at Ibrox in the first leg of their recent play-off.

The scene of unbridled joy got me thinking about the atmosphere at grounds. A bouncing Amex is a great place to be but, unfortunately, there wasnt much to get excited about last season.

Some clubs have rousing anthems and songs that have lasted generations, handed down from father to son. On The Ball City is actually older than Norwich City itself, and was adopted by fans in 1902 the oldest still-in-use football

chant in the world.Youll Never Walk Alone at

Anfield, just before kick-off, is an incredible spectacle. A pop song covered by Scouse band Gerry & The Pacemakers, it was belted out on the Kop for the first time in 1963 and is now synonymous with the Merseyside club.

The reason why the Stoke City choir favour Delilah is debatable; some sources believe it began with a chap called TJ drunkenly butchering the Tom Jones number in a Potteries pub, while others suggest a group of Stoke supporters introduced the chant to the Boothen End at the Victoria Ground in the late 1970s.

Birmingham Citys anthem Keep Right On can be traced back to 1956 when their players, on the team bus with

the windows down, could be heard streets away by Blues fans waiting for their heroes at Highbury.

West Ham fans have sung Im Forever Blowing Bubbles since the 1920s, the Toon Armys Bl
