BRILLIANCE OF COLLECTIVE THOUGHT, RADIANCE OF FRIENDSHIP
..…because we Light Up Rotary
I am honored by your response and will always be grateful. You have answered my call to Light Up Rotary by holding
many successful Rotary Day celebrations in your communities; you have outdone yourselves in your contributions to our
Rotary Foundation; and you have moved all of Rotary forward with new members and new clubs.
Together, the lights we have kindled have created a great light that shines for all the world to see... I have seen a new
energy in Rotary this year, and felt a new excitement. We've seen more and more women and young people join Rotary
as well – including my wife, Corinna, and our three children.
I hope that in the year to come, you will continue your wonderful work to Light Up Rotary – and to help it Be a Gift to the
World.
Excerpt from CONVENTION CLOSING REMARKS of President Gary C. K. Huang I know you have taken lots of pictures and selfies. Right now, I ask everybody here to take your smartphones out one more time and snap another selfie, of you and the Rotarian friends who are sitting next to you. Text this token of fellowship to your Rotary clubs at home or share it on your Facebook, Twitter or WeChat. Confucius once said, “To have friends, come from afar is the most joyful thing.” I am sure you feel the same way today. For me, this closing ceremony marks the end of a leadership cycle and a memorable journey. …Each time I witness a project, I always wonder: How many other lives could we change for the better by bringing more people into Rotary? Well, we all know great things don’t happen by themselves. We have to constantly challenge ourselves and others, and push the boundaries. Sometimes, all it takes is to ask.
…I felt the call to become a part of Rotary. But, I was rejected 3 times within 9 months. The reason were: I was too
young, there was no open classification, and I wasn’t a top executive. Not discouraged. I continued to participate in their
club events. Gradually, they gave in and opened the door. Thus, in 1976, I became the youngest member of the Rotary
Club of Taipei. Who would have thought this guy here would become the first Chinese to lead Rotary International 38
years later! Rotary has shaped and changed my life.
GARY C.K. HUANG, RI President, RY 2014-15 Excerpt from June 2015 message I wanted us, above all, to Light Up Rotary. I wanted us to share with the world how many wonderful friendships and experiences we have found in Rotary, and how Rotary has transformed and enriched our lives. I knew that by telling others about Rotary, we would increase membership, build stronger clubs, and improve our ability to help people in need.

Overview of some Decisions made, pending the release of official Minutes of the Board Meeting are:
The Board approved the RI Committees Selection and Evaluation Policy Statement which takes effect July 1,
2015. The salient points are:
1. Creation of a RI Committees Selection Task Force. To recruit and suggest candidates for RI committees
per Article 16 of RI Bylaws (communications, constitution and bylaws, conventions, districting, election review,
finance, Rotaract/Interact, strategic planning, audit, and operations review committees). The president-elect
will select and appoint from the list provided which shall be no less than three candidates for each open
committee position
2. Committee Member Recruitment. The goal is to provide a diverse pool of candidates for selection that
includes highly qualified individuals with expertise in the purview of the committee for which members are
being actively recruited. The general secretary, under the direction of the committee selection task force, shall
utilize Rotary’s communication outlets to advertise open committee positions. The application process shall
require a short bio, resume or curriculum vitae for individual Rotarians to complete as a self-nominating
process or individuals may nominate others. This process fosters engagement of a wide range of Rotary’s
membership and allows for a pool of diverse candidates. This recruitment process is not intended to solicit
preferred committee appointments for incoming or current RI directors and TRF trustees.
3. Committee Member Selection. Consistency and continuity from year to year are crucial to the success of a
committee over the long term. For appointments which become effective in one Rotary year and continue into
one or more subsequent years, the committee selection task force should consult with the successor(s)
president during the process.
4. Diversity and Consideration of Expertise or Skills. Representation of the diverse range of perspectives in
Rotary Membership as well as the most qualified candidates with specialty or technical skills or professional
expertise or skills shall be considered by the selection committee.
FROM THE BOARDROOM
President Gary expressed his appreciation for the
success in the Rotary Days. For some Zones, the
Rotary Day is not new to them. This time the
innovations put some structure into the event.
More importantly the Rotary heart pulsated in each
event. Friendship and Fellowship above all were
evident, something that cannot be masked by any
public relations effort.
He acknowledged the increased in membership by
46,997 from 1,188,339 in July 1, 2014 to
1,235,536 in May 31, 2015.

.…. More from the Boardroom
Interviews of Candidates for RI President. In the spirit of fairness, consistency, effective search for most
qualified Rotarian for RI President, the Board agreed that in-person interviews of the candidates for RI president
would assist the Nominating Committee to select the best qualified Rotarian available to perform the functions of
the office. If there are more than six candidates, nominating committee will be asked to vote on their top six
candidates within the following five days. The top six vote getters shall be considered the “finalists” and invited by
the general secretary to be interviewed in-person by the nominating committee in Evanston.
District Finance Committee. For more effective strategic governance, the districts will be encouraged to appoint
a district officer who will serve for 3 years in the District Finance Committee.
Jean Thomson Harris Society, another fund development program, was approved to take effect on 1 January
2016. A Jean Thomson Harris Society member is an individual or couple who have made a contribution and/or
commitment to Rotary’s Endowment Fund in the cumulative amount of US$25,000 or more.
The Board decided on the future venues of Rotary Convention. The 2019 RI Convention will be in Hamburg,
Germany and will be held from June 1-5, 2019. The 2021 RI Convention will be held in Taipei, Taiwan from June
13-15, 2021. The 2022 RI Convention will be in Houston, Texas from June 5 to 8, 2022.
Amends Rotary Code of Policies section 18.020.2. Special Representatives – New Club Activities
A special representative is a Rotarian who represents the governor in the organization of a provisional club in the
district. To be effective, a district special representative must have continuity of leadership.
This is in-line with the strategic thrust of building strong clubs. The DGSR will have a three-year term, so that
newly established club can be nurtured to vibrancy.
Election Complaints. The Election Review Committee received six complaints. The Board confirmed the
election of three DGsN 2017-2018, confirmed the election of DGE 2016-2017. One complaint was recognized as
valid and the Board decided that another election of a DGE 2016-2017 shall be conducted.
Excerpt from The Rotarian’s interview of RIPE Ravi Ravindran
The Rotarian: Tell us how you came up with your theme, Be a Gift to the World.
Did you pick out your theme tie by yourself, or did you seek help from those closest to you?
RIPE RAVI RAVINDRAN: It definitely was not a solo effort. My wife was fully involved and so were some
close friends, as well as my family. I don’t have the brains to come up with a great theme like this by myself!
But just think about it: We in Rotary aspire to great deeds. We look up to and admire the towering figures of
history who gave such great gifts to humanity. Abraham Lincoln, who gave the gift of human dignity to so
many. Mother Teresa, who gave the gift of compassion to the forgotten. Mahatma Gandhi, who gave the gift
of peaceful change to the oppressed. All of them gave their lives to others – and their very lives became
gifts to the world. Cannot we in Rotary be, in our own way, a small gift to the world?
