St Oliver’s Dads we invite you to an open morning on

Friday 1st September 2017 8:40am – 10:00am

Due to the school hall being knocked down we thought it would be nice to invite

our dads into our classrooms to see all the hard work we have been doing

throughout the school year! If dad is unable to make it we invite any grandfather’s, uncle’s or special males in

the children’s lives to come to our open morning.

The classroom doors will be open from 8:40am!

We look forward to seeing you then!

Medical Conditions It is imperative that we are aware of all medication and medical needs for each student. If your child has recently had a diagnosis of asthma or anaphylaxis or highly allergic we require knowledge of this for their safety here at school. Asthma plans are updated yearly and anaphylaxis as the doctor sees fit. We do not require a doctor’s signature for school asthma plans. Each child with medical needs has a box in our first aid room clearly labelled with their name, photo and the medication that it kept in it. Expiry records are kept and families are advised when their medication is about to expire. Your support in working with us and keeping us up to date with any changes is paramount.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Congratulations to the grade four children in Middle H and Middle B on receiving the sacrament of Eucharist last Sunday. They were very happy that Father Paul was able to say the Mass and although the weather wasn’t in their favour walking to the church, the celebraton was very reverent and a special time for the children and their families. A reminder that the Communion lunch is on 13 September. If any children have allergies to the foods listed, could they please let myself or the class teacher know. Class Mass Junior J will be attending the class Mass this Thursday 31 August at 10:00am. Parents are welcome to come and sit with their children and join them in prayer.

SPORT

DISTRICT ATHLETICS The Coburg District Athletics Carnival is to be held at Coburg Athletics Track THIS Wednesday August 30th 2017. Mrs Giulia Mazzarella and Miss Rachel Lewis will be accompanying the children to the event. The bus will leave promptly at 9:10 am so please ensure your child is at school on time as we will be unable to wait for them. There is a chance of a possible shower tomorrow, however, I have received confirmation that the Athletics Carnival will still go ahead. If in fact this does change the Carnival will be cancelled and moved to NEXT Wednesday 6th of September 2017. As soon as this call has been made an ‘App’ alert will be sent out to parents and students will also be notified. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Thank you to all the students who have made the team. Your dedication to training is a real credit to you all. Good luck and we are extremely proud of you all. I will send home a program outline so you are familiar with the schedule of events in case you are coming to watch and support your child.

MIDDLES HOOPTIME A big congratulations to all the Middle students who participated in the Hooptime Tournament on Friday. It was a jam packed day, where students were given the opportunity to participate in a team sport regardless of fitness, skill level or whether they have played basketball before. It’s safe to say that EVERY child had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you again for the overwhelming amount of support we received from parents who did an amazing job at both coaching and scoring.

NETBALL CLINICS FOR JUNIOR & MIDDLE STUDENTS Sporting Schools is a $100 million Australian Government initiative designed to help schools to increase children’s participation in sport and to connect children with community sport. The Australian Sports Commission has provided us with a grant that we will use towards netball clinics for the Junior and Middle classes for the next 4 weeks. The NetSetGO program will be run by Netball Victoria and Sporting Schools. This program incorporates skill activities, minor games, music and modified matches in a fun and safe environment. The program is coordinated and run by an accredited coach. Junior students will experiences the NET program while Middle students will participate in the SET program. Net (Grades 1-2) – students will learn netball related fundamental motor skills with fun games, music and activities. Set (Grades 3-4) – students will take part in modified games and activities with a focus on fun and teamwork. We ask that Middle students wear their P.E uniform on Thursdays and that Junior students wear their P.E uniform of Fridays. This is a great initiative and we look forward to seeing the students in action in the South Yard over the coming weeks. Clinics will be rescheduled or cancelled in the event of rain. So fingers crossed for lovely weather over the next few weeks. Please see the below timetable for your reference:

ITALIAN

What a busy few weeks we have had in Italian.

The garden has been growing slowly and the middles have done lots of weeding. They discovered that weeds can grow anywhere and that they can even grow in between pea plants!

The middles also had their first cooking class. They used silverbeet from the garden to make delicious ricotta and silverbeet triangles with tzatziki. It was a great success. Thank you to Daniela and Melissa for helping in the kitchen!

The Seniors have discussed their family backgrounds and they have tallied all the different countries that they are from. We looked more closely at the families whose backgrounds are Italian and found out that most of these families in the Seniors are from Sicily.

Yesterday they had the opportunity to taste a traditional Sicilian dessert: ricotta cannoli. Everyone seemed to enjoy them and asked for more! I have posted the recipe on the Student portal in Italian for them to try at home.

I would like to thank Genobile Brothers Food Distributors for their generous donation of many ingredients that will be using to cook in Italian class. We are very grateful!
