Welcome to the British Construction Industry Awards 2017.

This is a special year for the awards, and tonight is a special night. It marks the 30th running of these most prestigious construction industry awards.

It is a proud feature of the awards that every UK shortlisted project gets a visit from at least three of our judges; it is another

that our pool of judges is drawn from across the industry supply chain; and another that the judges seek to meet representatives from the entire project team: client, architect, designer, main contractor and any key specialists.

It means we ask a lot of our judges; the judging days are often long and usually involve a lot of travel, so to them we are extremely grateful. That many of them come

back year after year is of course testament to the quality of the projects we see and the pride of the project teams that we meet. It is not an experience you get often and it is one to be cherished.

And it is through this rigour that the awards, 30 years on, retain the reputation and credibility that makes them such sought after accolades.

It is reassuring, also, that looking

back through past winners, many, if not all, have truly stood the test of time and made it to that sought-after “iconic” status: indeed, our first ever Supreme Award winner, Broadgate Phases 1-4, stands as perfect example of excellence in our industry.

Many great projects have followed, from the Channel Tunnel, High Speed 1 and the Second Severn Crossing, to the

Emirates Stadium, Halley VI and The Shard. And don’t forget the collective success that was London 2012.

Heath, Safety and Wellbeing Initiative of the Year


This award seeks to recognise project teams that understand the importance of creating a safe and healthy working environment that promotes the industry as one that is attractive and welcoming to all.

Following the fatal collapse during demolition of the part of the Didcot Power Station boiler house in February 2016, Alford Technologies was appointed to demolish the remaining structure, which contained three trapped bodies. To eliminate risks to personnel, it devised a demolition method which involved using remote control technology to carry out surveys and place explosives in what was assumed to be a highly unstable structure.

Remote controlled vehicles used in military bomb disposal placed the explosives as part of a programme, which took just three months to implement, from the assembly of the project team to completion.

Community Engagement Initiative of the Year


This award recognises projects that have an outstanding community engagement initiative

The £380M, 20km widening of the A1 dual carriageway between Leeming and Barton involved a major community liaison effort to mitigate the impact of disruptive construction. The contractor’s community liaison team worked closely with local businesses to develop training and employment opportunities for local people. To mitigate disruption caused by road closures, the team devised a series of initiatives, even laying on taxis to take the elderly for weekly shopping trips. Closures

were also timed to ensure school bus services could maintain their schedules.

Application of Technology Award

Affinity Water wanted to replace the outdated chemical treatment equipment at the Uttlesford Bridge water treatment works near Saffron Waldon with a new, more efficient system. Its contractor Nomenca decided that it would manufacture the whole £1.9M plant at its factory before bringing it to site. It built up the design following an extensive site survey, using laser scanning,

enabling it to build up a 3D walk through of the site. Precast concrete supports were also incorporated, to enable smooth on-site installation.

Innovation in Product Design and Technology Award

Bam Ferrovial Kier (BFK) and formwork manufacturer Kern developed a self propelled formwork system to enable it to apply the secondary lining to the Eastern Ticket Hall escalator tunnel at Crossrail’s Farringdon Station. The system was adapted to work on the 30º incline, using hydraulic jacks in conjunction with anchor heads cast into the invert slab to advance it. The system is modular, giving

flexibility to adapt to varying profiles. Shutters were also controlled remotely, reducing risks to workers.

Temporary Works Award

Contractors working on Network Rail’s Northern Hub bridge across the River Irwell in Manchester rationalised temporary and permanent works designs, saving the project thousands of pounds. The new network arch bridge replaces a structure, which had to be demolished as part of the £315M Northern Hub project. Originally, two sets of temporary works were designed, one for the demolition phase and one for the erection phase. During early

contractor involvement, the contractor combined the two sets of temporary works, removing the need for redundant stage specific structures. The solution saved the project £850,000.

Partnership Initiative of the Year

The team assembled by Network Rail to deliver the Ordsall Chord in central Manchester was chosen for its members’ collaborative behaviours. The project includes an 89m long 600t asymetric network arch bridge. Under the alliance agreement for the project, team members had a role in budget setting and securing funding. They also worked with building information modelling systems to develop the design in 3D. Three consultants and the

steel fabricators worked together to optimise design and construction. The result was a more elegant, thinner structure which used less material than originally expected.

Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (up to £10M)

This £6M project was the most intensive undertaken on Tower Bridge for 35 years. Work to redeck the road and waterproof the approach viaduct had to be carried out while keeping the bascules in balance when elements were removed and replaced. Early Contractor Involvement enabled the client to knock six weeks off the programme. Client City of London Corporation also had to liaise closely with Transport for London and the Port of London Authority to secure a

three month closure of the bridge for some of the programme. Work outside the closure period had to be meticulously planned around bridge openings.

Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (£10M to £50M)

Bam Nuttall’s task on this £15M project was to improve the flood resilience of the Hampstead Heath Ponds, a series of interconnected dams. This involved raising the height of embankments, and building new spillways while enhancing the local landscape. The contractor and client also had to meet constraints imposed by local residents and other stakeholders, including maintaining access to the heath and its bathing ponds.

Preconstruction planning was vital to ensuring materials, equipment and personnel were delivered where and when they were needed.

The £500M, seven year world class station upgrade is the first step in transforming London’s West End. Works reach from a new public space to tunnels and shafts up to 29m below the streets and buildings. The deep station works preceded much of the Crossrail works at the same location, meaning that technical innovations and lessons learned here have subsequently been employed across the whole of Crossrail. Work was undertaken while

maintaining the operation of the station below ground, and one of the busiest road junctions in Central London above ground.

The Maggie’s cancer respite centre in Manchester is a gift to the Maggie’s Cancer Trust from Foster & Partners, whose chairman, Lord Foster, is a cancer survivor. It was designed to enhance efforts to raise the spirits of cancer patients using the centre as a place of refuge where they can find emotional and practical support. The roof channels natural light and is supported by lightweight lattice beams. A conscious decision was taken to use timber as the primary

structural material, for its warmth and to connect the building with the surrounding greenery. Equally important, was to view the production of architecture and structure as an integrated process, with a shared commitment to sustainability.

Oriam is a £30M centre for a wide range of sports including football and rugby union, and hosts activities for high performance athletes as well as students and members of the public. It includes the largest indoor 3G pitch in Europe, treatment facilities, a hydrotherapy pool, changing rooms and outdoor pitches. Natural ventilation and light are used as much as possible. The cross section of the roof above the indoor pitch is inspired by the equiangular

spiral trajectory of free kick taken by Brazilian footballer Roberto Carlos, which resulted in a spectacular goal during the 1997 Confederations Cup. Its effect is amplified by curved steel cladding.

Major Building Project of the Year Award (over £50M)

The 60,000m2-plus, City Campus brings together a range of different academic disciplines. It is also tailored into the topography of the site, with two major staircases acting as the main routes into the building and as meeting places for students and staff. The Campus is organised around two major spaces – an enclosed courtyard and a seven storey atrium, which act as energised spaces in which people can interact and socialise. The building incorporates

innovative low tech environmental strategies coupled to advanced onsite renewables. The buildings are largely naturally ventilated, with the main atrium acting as a stack, helping to drive ventilation crossflows through the floorplates. The project was completed on time and to budget.

International Project of the Year Award

The 3km viaduct connects the Nam Fung Tunnel Portal to Ap Lei Chau and includes two stations. The project includes extensive noise barriers, nullah-decking, slope design, and landscaping. It crosses busy highways and runs past high rise residential buildings as well as spanning the Aberdeen Channel. The Atkins team faced a number of major design constraints and construction challenges. These were overcome by a range of innovative design features as well as

integrating fully with the client’s management team and working closely with contractor’s construction team to complete the project within time and budget.

Carbon Reduction Project of the Year Award

This project involved reusing and adapting existing assets to make the area served by the Grafham water treatment works more resilient against prolonged outage. The project also involved the construction of a 36km, 900mm diameter pipeline linking the treatment works with Hannington. This solution saved £30M and reduced the carbon content of the project by 50%. Design for manufacture and assembly techniques also enabled the team

to precast concrete elements for the main reservoir off site. Excavated material was reused in the landscaping work around the main reservoir, which is the size of 16 Olympic swimming pools.

Award for Natural and Cultural Heritage

The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) is the UK’s centre of remembrance; a spiritually uplifting place which honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country. The £15.7M Remembrance Centre provides a gateway into the 60ha arboretum and houses exhibition, interpretation and retail spaces, plus a restaurant, café and learning centre.From the outset, the whole design

team recognised the importance of this project and came together to deliver a building that exceeds everyone’s expectations, and which can grow organically and sustainably over time. The project was delivered on time and on budget.

Economic Infrastructure Project of the Year Award


This award recognises projects that are driving economic growth at a local, regional or national level through economic infrastructure. Sponsored by Mabey

The £140M Heysham to M6 Link Road is one of the largest local authority road projects recently constructed. It has reduced travel times and cut congestion, with significant social and economic benefits. Forty per cent of the construction spend was made within 40km of the site, and 75% was spent within 160km. The 4.8km long dual carriageway includes a combined footway-cycleway parallel to the carriageway. It connects into the existing

road network at various locations along its length. The project includes a 650 space Park and Ride facility and a remodelled M6 Junction 34.

The Word is a library, celebrating the dynamic relationship between people, books, traditional media and interactive technologies. The £13.5M building was developed in close consultation with local residents, who will be its users. It was also conceived to attract people who do not usually visit libraries, and has been successful in doing this. The result is a circular building with a central atrium and flexible internal space. Local artists and writers

also contributed to the designs. In its first four months the Word recorded 179,000 visits and a 1,000% increase in members, compared to the same period in the previous building.

Cool school studentsDulwich College wanted to house its new science facilities in a sustainable building. Our solution involved using water from an aquifer deep underneath the school to regulate internal temperatures. 50 roof-mounted photovoltaic panels and automated lighting keep energy demand low. The result? The labs are four times more energy efficient than conventional alternatives. Pretty cool!

Judges’ Special Award

Innovative engineering and funding characterise the British Airways i360 in Brighton, which is the slenderest tower in the world, with a height to width ratio of 40:1. The funding package for the £38M, 160m tall structure allows Brighton & Hove City Council to earn almost £1M a year from its visitors. The tower comprises 17 stacked “cans”, which were jacked into position in 10 weeks. The aerodynamically designed tower incorporates

dampers and a perforated aluminium clad exterior, working together to minimise vibrations induced by strong winds, enabling the attraction to remain open during stormy weather.

Outstanding Contribution of the Year Award

As the director of real estate development for the Metropolitan Police, Harding has continually sought to modernise the procurement, delivery and operation of the Met’s activities. The organisation’s long term strategy to deliver more modern, secure facilities with an efficient use of space to allow for flexible working, while reducing the running costs of the estate have ensured that money can be re-directed into front-line policing.

The accolades received for the projects within his portfolio highlight his success in achieving these operational goals while also ensuring aesthetics are not compromised. They include the New Scotland Yard project (pictured), winner of this year’s Prime Minister’s Award for Better Public Building. He has contributed a great deal towards leading the modernisation of construction practices in the emergency services.

The design for the Metropolitan Police Service’s new £58M headquarters is a radical remodelling and extension of the Curtis Green Building, a 1930s building on the Thames Embankment. The scheme has expanded the building’s floor area from 8,691m2 to around 12,000m2 through extensions to the rear, roof and front concourse. The contemporary design complements and enhances the architectural features of

the original building and the materials, colours and proportions of neighbouring Whitehall buildings.
