tarring Timothy Spall as the inim-itable artist L.S. Lowry himself, and

an excellent Vanessa Redgrave as hismother, this is a gentle comedy that willwarm hearts of art lovers and scepticsalike.

Lowry lives all his life with his over-bear-ing mother Elizabeth who constantlytries to dissuade him from pursuing hisartistic ambitions, whilst never failing toremind him what a disappointment he isto her. Spending his days as a rent collec-tor Lowry takes art classes in the eveningand paints into the early hours of themorning yearning for his work to be ap-preciated in London and beyond. Whilehis disdainful mother is the ultimate ob-stacle to his success, she is the very rea-son Lowry paints anything at all, desperate to create something, anything, which will make her happy.

Helmed by Adrian Noble, a former direc-tor of the Royal Shakespeare Company, this accurate depiction of the relation-ship between the iconic British artist andhis mother is tinged with nostalgia, whilethe stunning detail of the expert set andcostume design envelopes the audienceinto life in early 20th century Lancashire.

irector Armando Iannucci (TheDeath of Stalin, BFF17) brings his

sardonic wit – and a stellar cast of DevPatel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie andBen Whishaw – to Charles Dickens' classicautobiographical novel. Direct fromOpening Night at the London Film Festi-val, this thrillingly realised adaptation ofDickens’ personal and optimistic narra-tive is gloriously entertaining. Careeningthrough 19th century England, it followsits hero from one unlikely situation to thenext.

Born after the death of his father, David(Patel, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,2011) is fortunate to be raised by a lovingmother. But when she takes a violent newhusband, David is sent away on anodyssey of sorts, starting at the cottageof his housekeeper's family. As Davidinhabits several more temporary abodes, which include an oppressive boardingschool and the home of his eccentricaunt Betsey Trotwood (Swinton), his waywith words proves to be his saving grace.

This buoyant and funny crowd-pleasercannily transposes its source material intoa decidedly 21st-century context, with aninfectiously energetic Dev Patel leadingthe way to demonstrate that great art isborn of great experience.

Enitan (Zephan Amissah/Damson Idris)is a boy “farmed out” by his parents to awhite British family in the hope of givinghim a better future. Whenall seems lost and Enitan spirals into self-destruction, a benevolent teacher offershim one last chance at redemption.

Driven by themes of identity, power, love and betrayal, Farming is rich withcompelling characters: the complex anddubious Ingrid, Levi (John Dagleish) thecharismatic gang leader, and at its heartour flawed hero, Enitan, a lost souldesperately searching for a mother’s loveas he struggles to find himself in a brutalworld.

elve deeper into the dastardlydeeds of history's greatest block-

buster rulers as this entertaining big-screen outing for the CBBC televisionseries focuses on ancient Rome and itsattempt to crush the Boudicca uprisingin far-off uncivilised Britain.

The all-conquering Romans rule thecivilised world – and that includes “thestain” that is Britain. While the youngEmperor Nero, played by a very funnyCraig Roberts, must battle his schemingmother Agrippina (an equally amusingKim Cattrall) for ultimate power, Celtqueen Boudicca gathers an army inBritain to repel the rotten Romans. Mixedup in this battle for liberation are theteenage Atti, a reluctant Roman soldier, and Orla, a young Celt with dreams ofbecoming a warrior like Boudicca. Willthey fall on opposite sides or forge afriendship in the chaos of rebellion?

These cutthroat Celts and rotten Romansdeliver fun for the whole family, with DerekJacobi gamely reprising his legendaryrole as Emperor Claudius. Dishing up themuch-loved revolting recipe of sketchesand songs, peppered with gruesomegags and hideous hilarity history hasnever been so naughty.

ased on the worldwide best-sellingnovel by Simon Winchester, and

starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn, thisdramatic biopic is an extraordinary truetale of madness, genius, and obsessionabout two remarkable men who createdhistory with the writing of the OxfordEnglish Dictionary.

Professor James Murray (Gibson) tookon the daunting challenge of creating themost comprehensive dictionary everdeveloped, but predicted that it wouldtake him and his team over a century tocompile all known definitions. However,by “crowdsourcing” the work and enlistingdefinitions from people all over the world, the dictionary could be accomplished inmere decades. As definitions werecollected, the overseeing committee, ledby Professor Murray, discovered that anAmerican Civil War veteran, Dr. W.C.Minor (Penn), had submitted more thanten thousand words. But when thecommittee insisted on honouring him, ashocking truth came to light that no onecould have ever predicted.

Also starring Natalie Dormer and SteveCoogan, The Professor and the Madmanis a beautifully shot, sensationally actedtale.

Dr Jean Markham (Anna Paquin) returnsto the town she left as a teenager to takeover her late father’s medical practice. When a school-yard scuffle lands youngCharlie (Gregor Selkirk) in her surgery, sheinvites him to visit the hives in her gardenand tell his secrets to the bees, as sheonce did. The new friendship between theboy and the beekeeper brings his motherLydia (Holliday Grainger) into Jean’sworld. In the sanctuary of the doctor’shouse the two women find themselvesdrawn to one another in a way that Jeanrecognises and fears, and Lydia couldnever have expected. But, in 1950s small-town Britain, their new secret can’t stayhidden forever.

60 YEARS OF MINI.FOREVER UNEXPECTED.Everyone has a little bit of unexpected. A spirit that lurks beneath the surface. Behind appearances. Alec Issigonis had it. He was already in his 50s when he threw out the design rule book to create a car in an oil crisis. John Cooper had it. He saw the potential of that car to revolutionise auto racing. And every MINI driver, past and present, has it. For that, we thank them. For 60 years, unexpected has been the DNA of the MINI brand. And MINI’s timeless sense of fun, individualism and creativity will fuel unexpected for years to come. Most things get boring with age. But not MINI. We’re forever unexpected. So, if you’re ready for something unexpected, book a test drive today.
