A big Brouhaha welcome to our 2016 festival, this year we are back with fourteen days of local, national

and international indoor and outdoor performances, carnival parades, schools and community workshops, a carnival sector youth conference’ New Voices’ and a new three day event ‘The Caribbean Music Festival’. So far 2015 has been an exciting year for us with arts engagement projects in India, South Africa, France and the USA, with more projects to come in the Netherlands, India and South Africa. Join us as audiences or participants

Welcome and celebrate a diverse and unique arts offer within Brouhaha International Street Festival 2016 where local meets international. Discover new companies and watch stunning carnival parades in both Liverpool and Edinburgh. Our 2016 festival programme hosts cultural events and community celebrations that engage within many groups, neighbourhoods and communities. We look forward to seeing you in costume during carnival or on the road.

Calender of events

In partnership with Young DaDaFestand Samba Resille, Brouhaha presentstwo dynamic percussion groups,‘Batucabraille’ a batucada groupcomposed of young musicians from the Institute for the Blind (IJA) in Toulouse, France. Secondly “Pourquoi Pas Nous” (PPN meaning ‘Why Not Us’). Samba Resille’s main objective is to change the wider community’s perception of disability, presenting parades and concerts for mainstream audiences, in bars, carnivals, in the street, or in music festivals. The groups will perform at Young DaDaFest, an event organised by young disabled people that forms part of DaDaFest International 2016. It showcases performances from local and national young artists. Brouhaha welcomes 80 young costume makers, dancers, musicans and DJs from across the UK carnival sector to celebrate achievements and build capacity through a youth conference New Voices. The 3 days will host: presentations

by national and international young makers, dancers and musicians, Seminars for unlocking national and European funding; peer to peer learning sessions across the spectrum of carnival arts; workshops by international carnival arts practitioners and performers from South Africa, Martinique, Curacao, France, Brazil, Ireland and Portugal; A plenary/debate with funders and decision makers; A showcasing performance event for emerging carnival musicians and singers within the Caribbean Music Festival and participation in Liverpool International Carnival.

Participating in our 2016 carnival under our annual theme of ‘Street Life’ will be costume sections

from Liverpool and the Wirral as well as national participation by carnival groups from East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Network and London. Also joining us at this year’s carnival will be international performing arts companies including our first time vistors from Dublin’s Nigerian Carnival Ireland. 2016 sees new floor and character costumes designed by Liverpool International Carnival’s artistic director Ray Allen Mahabir, with artisitc production from Amanda Baptista, Darcie Chezan -Stead and Leesham Stringer.

Street Life’ embraces the diversity of people living in urban social and cultural contexts. Styles, situations,realities and confrontations found on the streets explore the dynamics at play in our shared public spaces. Streetstyle, street people, street battles, street food and street fashion all play their part. Cities are not just brick andconcrete they’re made of people and re-lationships. Streets are connectors, can-vases for social and cultural action, sym-bols of urban life with all its challenges.

In partnership with event producer Garvin ‘Scrappy’ Johnson our festival hosts a new three days event ‘The Caribbean Music

Festival’ (formally the ‘Soca Music Festival’). Venues across the City will host a diverse range of music and artists from Soca to Reggae from Zouk to Calypso.

The line up for Friday night welcome party includes DJ Toro, DJ RDR,Catalan reggae band Microguagua and Zouk band M-Jam

from Martinique and Liverpool’s Merki Water’s and 4Tune and One-a-Penny Sound System.

Schools International Festival

Building on the successes of our 2015 schools engagement programme Brouhaha International continue to develop and deliver workshops and performances by international companies within primary and secondary schools across Liverpool. These activities ensure that high quality international work is seen in school environments, giving children and young people international arts experiences that provide valuable learning and development opportunities for all involved.

Edinburgh Festival Carnival

Edinburgh Festival Carnival is presented by Brouhaha International and Edinburgh

Jazz & Blues Festival. A magnificent carnival parade with live drumming groups from around world and large character costumes. Live performance will be taking place in Princes Street Gardens from 15:30 onwards.

3 Points Dance (Spain/Catalan) a six piece group fusing urban and contempoary.

Immortal Style (South Africa) A high energy five piece break dance Crew from Cape Town, present a new performance based on brouhaha’s 2016 carnival theme ‘Street Life’.

SoulFool Band (Hungary) A Budapest based five piece Jazz and blues band delving into the forgotten swing, soul and gospel classics they charm their audience with their unique energetic and dynamic style.

Enjoy (Italy) This walkabout street theatre group from Turin bring a new style of Comedia del Arte.

M-Jam (Martinique) are a bank who play many Caribbean styles of music from Zouk to reggae they perform many style of music.

KalentuRa (the Netherlands) One of Holland’s most sought after percussion ensembles that bring you a new show that takes the audience on a safari through our musical jungle full of diffident rhythmical animals. KalentuRa is best known for their Caribbean drum band that transforms every event into a rhythmic spectacle.

D’Arte Company (the Netherlands) promote Curaçaoan culture through showcasing the heritage of the Antillian Caribbean community.

BATUCABRAILLE (France) is a batucada percussion group composed of young musicians from Tolouse.

Pourquoi Pas Nous ‘Why Not Us’ (France) are a percussion group whose members are young people and adults from Toulouse.

Bombrando (Portugal) BOMBRANDO Percussion and Portuguese bagpipes aims to encourage the participation of the young people in cultural activities, promoting traditional culture. BOMBRANDO provides great moments of musical performance drawing on drum traditions from African, reggae to rock and classical.

Chorus Line Dance Company (Greece) persents Latin, European, Greek traditional dance, salsa, tango argentino, oriental and modern-jazz.

Roots & Routes (Netherlands) a dance group who specialize in street and urban contemporary dance.

Urban Worden (Belgium) Urban Worden is a poetry, slam, rap platform for young people to express themselves and build a more engaged society by providing more avenues and space to share their voice.

Destination Carnival (South Africa and UK) this group of dancers has been created to work on our international carnival dance project in India, South Africa and now the UK

Nigerian Carnival (Ireland) are a community organisation who have created a new carnival, they join us for the first time in Liverpool for the 2016 festival.

Samba Résille (France) uses Samba music as a tool to mix different audiences and artistic practices, including teaching Brazilian music, vocational training in animation techniques and are the organisers of Carnival de Toulouse.

Microguagua band (Spain) is a funky reggae street band from Barcelona expect Catalan madness and brush up on your Spanish.
