Long-Term EvolutionLong-Term Evolution (LTE) is a transformational technology that is quickly becoming the most widely deployed wireless network technology in the history of mobile communications. It relies on the adoption of an IP/MPLS core transport network, which was introduced in the middle of the last decade with 3G technology. It not only represents a signifi cant cost reduction opportunity for mobile network operators (MNOs), it also greatly increases capacity thanks to the allocation of previously unused spectrum and high-spectrum effi ciency. To be successful, LTE requires the deployment of four components:

› eUTRAN: Implementation of an eNodeB at every cell-site location where coverage is needed and upgrade of RF assets, such as the antenna, masts, feeder cables, power amplifiers, battery back-up, power systems, cabinets and transmission equipment.

› Ethernet backhaul: Large-scale deployment is required, specifi cally in networks lacking sizable HSPA+ deployment.

› EPC: Deployment of MMEs, SGWs, PGWs along with relevant routing, switching and security equipment. The core network elements must also be interconnected to the 2G/3G network for interworking and access to common registers such as HLR/HSS.

› IMS: Deployment of network elements for session initiation protocol (SIP) and application servers to provide voice and other unified communication services and integration with legacy network elements for voice and messaging applications.

PowerHawk Pro enables network service optimization and troubleshooting through real-time KPIs and detailed user-plane analysis. Multiple probes remotely capture network traffi c from the 1/10 Gbit/s Ethernet interfaces. A KPI generator processes the network traffi c and stores it in a database to be analyzed by the Diagnostics Suite and optional M5 Analyzer client software. PowerHawk Pro also correlates both control- and user-plane traffi c across all interfaces to show a full, end-to-end view of both signaling and user-plane data.
