India’s North East , comprising

of the seven sisters and Sikkim, is a

region which can be best described as

virgin, wild and exotic. Guarded by

mountains on all sides, the only passage

is a narrow stretch of flat land some 30

km wide, called the ‘Siliguri Corridor’.

Beyond this corridor lies the seven sister

states of Northeast India. Great religious

and ethnic diversity is found here, andeven today many tribes live here about

whom very little is known.

1. The Thai Village (Assam)

A small village of the Tai (Thai) Phakial

tribe is located in Upper Assam. They are

Buddhists of the Hinayana sect and

amazingly, they resemble the Thais of

Thailand.

2. Konyak Tribe (Nagaland)

Among the most colourful tribes in the

North-East, you can still see tattoos on the

faces of some of the elders, which signifies

that they are head-hunters and have killed

someone during an inter-tribal war.

3. Zekhring tribe (Arunachal)This particular tribe is special because there

are only 300 individuals left. The tribe will

disappear in a few years time since there are

too few of them and they will have to

gradually inter-marry with other tribes and

eventually cease to exist as a separate tribe

unto themselves.4. Lost Tribes of Israel (Mizoram)

This is not a particular tribe, but a collection

of different tribes all over Mizoram,

numbering around 7000, that claim to be

members of the Bnei Menashe, or the

children of Menashe, one of the 10 “lost

tribes” of Israel

 Talatal Ghar, Shivsagar

Northeast India, called ‘Kingdom of Assam’

during medieval times, was ruled by the Ahom

Dynasty for more than 600 mighty years. They

were great warriors and even the Mughals could

not defeat them; having lost all the thirteen wars

fought. Ahoms were brilliant in architecture and

built big cities, the ruins of which still remain.

Satras or Assamese Monasteries, where monks

came to devote their life to arts, music, drama and

religion, were established during their regime; a

culture which even today continues in Majuli.
