5

Simple Explanation

Integration of Both Units

Prepare the following:

• A Research Proposal

• A Formal Report

• An Oral Presentation

7

Analyse and Present Research

Information

A Simple Definition of the Word

“Information” is:

Facts provided or learned about

something or someone.Analyse and Present Research Information

8

Information is gathered as part

of our daily lives

Examples of information are:

Correspondence – letters, faxes and emails

Computer databases – library catalogues, customer records

Sales records – monthly forecasts, targets achieved

Analyse and Present Research Information

9

Other examples include:

Invoices – from suppliers to debtors

Personnel Records – staff information, salaries etc

Forms – insurance, membership

10

Surveys

Market Studies

Staff appraisals

Reviews of organisational policies and procedures

Investigations into relevant legislation and regulations

Investigations into operations of competitors

Businesses may complete research to

obtain information such as:

11

Why do we gather information?

Category Reason for gathering Uses when analysed

Workplace Incident or

Accident Reports

To record details of an event

for reporting purposes.

To identify workplace hazards

to avoid future accidents or

incidents.

Tax Invoices To let a client know what they

need to pay for goods and/or

A recording device showing

why a company received

money for GST purposes.

Identifies cash flow within the

business; useful for future

financial planning.

Help Desk Log A record of caller’s name and

other details, nature of

problems and solutions.

Analysis of the log can assist in

identification of common

problems that can be solved

via software upgrades or staff

training.

Designing Gathering Tools:

The best types of gathering

tools are simple forms,

surveys or questionnaires.

Analyse and Present Research Information

14

When Collecting Information you

Need to Consider:

Purpose – what do you want to know and why?

Audience – how do you reach your target?

Completion – should you enter details, or allow the respondent to complete?

Keep it Simple – a complicated form or survey could lead to inaccuracies!

Analyse and Present Research Information

15

Types of Questions:

Examples are:

Would you like to go to lunch?

Are you free to talk at the moment?

Are you a: Teacher Student Parent

Closed questions are those that require a

simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, or are multiple

choice:

Analyse and Present Research Information

16

Closed Questions

Advantages

time-efficient.

responses are easy to

understand.

Disadvantages

respondents are required

to choose a response

that may not exactly

reflect their answer.

Analyse and Present Research Information

17

Open-ended questions are those that have no pre-defined answers.

Examples are:

How do I book tickets for a flight to New York?

Why are you feeling so sad?

What is your experience of TAFE?

Analyse and Present Research Information

18

Open Questions

Advantages

participants can respond

to the questions exactly

how they would like to

answer them.

the researcher can

investigate the meaning

of the responses.

Disadvantages

time-consuming.

responses are difficult to

code and interpret.

Analyse and Present Research Information

19

An Embedded question is a question included in

another question or statement.

Embedded questions feel less abrupt, and so have a

softening effect. For example, compare the following:

A: What time is it? (simple question)

B: Sorry. I don't know the time. (simple statement)

A: Do you know what time it is? (embedded question in a question)

B: Sorry. I don't know what time it is. (embedded question in a statement)

20

Other examples are:

Do you know what the housing market will be like next year?

Do you remember when President Clinton was impeached?

Can you tell me the way to the nearest bus stop?

Analyse and Present Research Information

21

Scalar Questions:

Ordinal

For example: Satisfaction Ranked from 1 to 10 .

1 being low satisfaction, 10 being highest satisfaction

Interval

For example: Satisfaction Ranked as follows:

Poor – Satisfactory – Excellent.

Important Note:

The information gathered must be:

Complete

Up-to-Date

Easy to Understand

Analyse and Present Research Information

26

That is:

There is no point in researching and

collecting data if it’s not presented in

a simple, easy-to-understand

manner.

Disorderly information causes

confusion!

27

Classroom Task – 10 minutes

medical, hospital and rehabilitation expenses, and return to work

costs.

whether recorded in a material form or not, about an

Human rights recognise the inherent value of each person, regardless

of background, where we live, what we look like, what we think or

what we believe.

Sick and carer's leave (also known as personal leave or personal /

EmailAdvantages

Respondents can complete and

interview questionnaire when it

suits them

Can allow respondents time to

consider answers

Results/responses can be cut-and-

pasted directly into other

programs for collations and

analysis.

Cost effective – any number can

be sent.

Disadvantages

Body language cues may be

missed

Extra questions cannot be asked

during the interview

You don’t actually know who is

completing the survey

Analyse and Present Research Information

38

Website QuestionnairesAdvantages

Results are automatically

tallied and analysed by the

software

Relatively easy to maintain

Can continually gauge

customer satisfaction about

products and services over a

long period.

Disadvantages

Setting up can be expensive

and time consuming

Customers can choose not to

complete the survey

No body language cues

No opportunity for asking

spontaneous questions

39

FacsimileAdvantages

Respondents can complete

the survey when it suits them

Can allow users time fully think

through responses

Disadvantages

Body language and

spontaneous questions

Not easy to collate results

TelephoneAdvantages

Quick and convenient

Extra questions can be added

Answers can be typed directly into a computer
