W elcome to the 2014 CaGBC National Conference and Expo

in Toronto. I am honoured to be this year’s conference chair. The CaGBC Conference and Expo, Building Lasting Change, makes it possible for industry professionals and enthusiasts to gather each year and experience the value of sustainable practices and learn from others.

This year’s conference explores the value of green through the lens of sustainable building, real estate and neighbourhood development. The program will go beyond the operational savings of building

green and focus on the benefits of enhanced health and well-being, tenant attraction and retention, and innovation and job growth.

These themes resonate well for me as VP Conservation at the Ontario Power Authority. We are focused on promoting innovative green technologies and systems as well as delivering cost effective energy efficient solutions for businesses and residents that help customers better manage their electricity consumption.

I hope you enjoy this year’s conference.

LETTER FROM THE HONORARY CHAIR

The Cement Association of Canada would like to welcome you to

Building Lasting Change, the 2014 CaGBC National Conference. As presenting sponsor for the third year, we are excited to be part of this marquee annual event.

The release of LEED v4 and the growing emphasis on transparency and performance data in the green building movement mark an important transition: now more than ever, we can leverage the power of integrative thinking to optimize the sustainability performance of our built environment.

CaGBC is on the leading edge of this transformation in Canada. This year’s conference theme ‘Exploring the Value of Green Building’ captures our growing depth of knowledge

about the “win-win-win” benefits of green building and sustainable infrastructure. No doubt the next few days will further strengthen the evidence that sustainable design and construction is a wise investment.

Collaboration is key to success in building for sustainability, and the CAC remains a committed partner. Our motto is “Build it once. Build it right. Build it to last.. and Build it together.”

On behalf of the CAC’s members – Ciment Québec, ESSROC Italcementi Group, Federal White Cement Ltd., Holcim Canada, Lafarge Canada, Lehigh Hanson Canada, St Marys Cement Group and Colacem Canada – I wish you an inspirational and productive conference.

Michael McSweeneyPresident and CEO, Cement Association of Canada Thomas Mueller

President and CEO, Canada Green Building Council

A MESSAGE FROM THOMAS MUELLER

On behalf of the Canada Green Building

Council, I would like to welcome you to

Building Lasting Change, the 2014 CaGBC National

Conference and Expo.

This year’s theme ‘Exploring the Value of Green

Building’ addresses leading edge information

on the business case and performance of green

buildings, and also embraces the broader value

proposition of building green. This means going

beyond the operational savings and environmental

outcomes to explore benefits such as return on

investment, tenant attraction and retention,

employee health and productivity, innovation,

and job creation. These issues will be explored

over the next three days during thought-provoking

keynotes and education sessions.

We are fortunate to have Mike Pedersen this year

to open the conference. As President & CEO of

TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, Mike

provides a business perspective and shares his

involvement in TD’s sustainability efforts including

green building as a key pillar of overall corporate

sustainability programs.

The business perspective will be complemented

by a gala keynote, Janine Benyus, who will tell us

what we can learn from the natural world in the

move toward low-impact buildings. A renowned

biologist and biomimicry expert, Janine will share

her expertise in emulating and preserving nature’s

genius to create a healthier, more sustainable

planet. I believe we all stand to be inspired and

learn a great deal about what it means to take a

truly sustainable approach to design.

I am also very much looking forward to hearing

from noted architect day two Keynote Stefan

Behnisch, Partner at Behnisch Architekten, on

advanced sustainable building design, as he draws

on his experiences in Germany and the U.S.

Another big focus of the 2014 conference is

LEED v4, which was formally launched by USGBC

in November 2013. Our Transformative Power of

LEED stream presents important insights into LEED

v4, including the introduction of product life-cycle

assessment and transparency (Environmental

Product Declarations), the Canadian Alternative

Compliance Paths (ACPs), the new LEED dynamic

plaque, and other upgrades the rating system has

in store for the industry.

As in previous years, the conference is an

opportunity to recognize those projects and

people that have made a difference in 2013. I am

pleased that we are once again working with SAB

Magazine to recognize national excellence with

the Canadian Green Building Awards presented

at the Welcome Reception. We are also honouring

the 2014 green building leaders through the

Annual CaGBC Leadership Awards at the Gala

on Tuesday night. I commend all the individuals

who are committed to doing things differently

and pushing innovation in green building.

I wish you all a great event and hope that you

come away inspired and ready for the big changes

coming to the green building movement this year.

Emerging Performance Ambitions: Net Positive Energy Buildings

Presented by: Ray Cole, Academic Director, UBC Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability

ROOM 713B

1 GBCI CE

HOUR

The emerging notion of “net positive energy” buildings, if considered as more than simply an extension of net-zero energy, introduces several new design considerations and possibilities. This presentation explores the consequences of viewing the role of a building in adding value to its context and where the emphasis shifts to the maximization of energy performance in a system-based approach. Net Positive Energy approaches open a host of new technical, behavioural, policy and regulatory issues not currently evident with Net Zero Energy buildings and challenge the current expectation that each and every building should be required to attain net zero performance.

Turning the Sustainability Story Inside Out: A Dynamic Perspective on What Really Matters

We design, build, operate and manage real estate sustainably. But how does our approach to each of these change when we examine it through the lens of “what really matters”? In this panel discussion, three of Canada’s largest building owner/operators will share their unique journey along the path of value creation in sustainable real estate. The discussion will show how putting the occupier at the centre of decision-making moves the sustainability continuum along, and creates value through optimally housing organizations, managing business performance and enhancing the human experience.

Have we got office design all wrong? Many designers, office workers and corporate decision-makers equate sitting all day at a desk, in a sealed office building - often an enclosed office, often without windows - as the typical work environment. The increased interest in sustainable buildings and the introduction of green building rating systems such as LEED have increased awareness of the values of daylight and views, operable windows, and the removal of VOCs. However, designers and architects are not looking at additional features that should be included in an office environment to improve the well-being of knowledge workers.

Bringing Green Building Policy to Life - Tools and Techniques to Optimize Outcomes (Master Speaker Series)

Presented by: Jennifer Sanguinetti, Director, Project Services, University of British Columbia.

ROOM 713A

1 GBCI CE

HOUR

BC Housing and UBC have long standing green building policies. With over 50 LEED registered and certified projects combined, they’ve learned that simply mandating LEED Gold certification doesn't guarantee high performing buildings. Effective policy must be matched with resources, enabling teams to design, build and operate the buildings successfully. This presentation will highlight the tools both UBC and BC Housing have created to support their policy including: design requirements; a Building Handover Guide documenting how to transition between design/construction and operation; operations manual templates; and an operator training program. Case studies illustrating implementation of these resources, including actual operating data, will be presented.

At their best, green building policy and climate policy can provide environmental benefits greater than the sum of their parts. In some instances, policies introduce competing and potentially conflicting signals resulting in higher project costs and sub-optimal green building or carbon abatement solutions. This session explores the intersection between the green building and climate policies for residential, commercial, and institutional building projects in Vancouver. Case studies will show how the Province, the City, building and DES industry stakeholders, and the CaGBC are collaborating to find synergies, and to optimize the intended benefits of both green building and climate policy measures.
