BURGEE SUMMER 2016

Commodore’s Report

As I write this I realise that we are now racing

rapidly through our race sailing calendar

season and nearly finished the summer series

with just the autumn series to go.

The racing has been well attended and we

have been lucky with some good winds as well

as the occasional frustrating Goring days with

winds shifts from every direction (usually at

the most inopportune moment for me!) or just

dropping off altogether and there have been

one or two races abandoned because of this.

Other than the Sunday racing it has been a

packed few months and since the last Burgee

we have had a number of events happening

including:

A trip with the juniors down to the

National Sailing Academy in

Weymouth and Portland which was a

really good weekend in which 17 of

our intrepid juniors sailed in quite

challenging sailing conditions.

Our summer party on 25th June which

was an excellent evening which this

year we spent in the clubhouse for a

sit down meal prepared by

Pierrepoint’s. Many thanks to Jill

Marsden for organising such a

successful evening.

The Thames Challenge at Reading

Sailing Club in which Goring juniors

competed against 7 other teams from

5 other clubs making an excellent days

team racing and doing very well in the

windy conditions…

July saw 6 of our juniors head off to

Norfolk to compete in the Oxfordshire

team at the NSSA and August saw a

number of members head off to

Studland for a few days sailing.

Hopefully everyone will come back from their

summer’s activities refreshed and ready to sail

in the fresh Autumn winds!

Visitors to the club

Please don’t keep the pleasure of club

membership all to yourself; you are welcome

to bring guests. Any member can sign in up to

three visitors at any one time, all you need to

do is to make sure that they sign the visitor’s

book which is in the holder by the entrance

door to the clubhouse and they are welcome

to use the club facilities. So if you are a family

of four you could bring down up to 12 guests

between you as long as you sign them all in.

Please remember if they are going on the

water then they MUST sign in as a temporary

member, temporary membership is available

for up to 5 days a year (any more than that

and they should really be joining!). Hopefully if

they enjoy using the club then they will want

to join!

If you want to have a larger group or a party

then you are welcome to make a booking to

use the club, this can be from as little as £45.

Please contact our club Secretary Jill Marsden

for availability and more information if you

want to make a club booking.

Toilet blocking

A reminder to all members that we are not on

mains sewerage, but have a septic tank so it is

important not to put anything other than the

3P’s down the toilet. We recently had to have

the toilets unblocked which cost the club £100.

Apart from the cost this is very inconvenient (if

you pardon the pun) for all members so please

help us to manage this problem by not putting

anything else down the toilet. In the past we

have had the blue handtowels block the toilet,

these need to go in the bin and if there is no

toilet paper in the loo the supplies of toilet

rolls are kept in the disabled toilet in the

clubhouse building so please go and grab a

roll rather than use the blue towels!

Tea and bar facilities

The committee has been reviewing the

facilities that we offer with regard to tea bar

and bar facilities, our profits margin is lower

than expected with the tea bar barely covering

costs. We should be making considerably more

than we currently do and the only reason that

we can account for this is that people are

forgetting to pay. We will therefore be

improving the signage and will purchase a new

cash box which will be kept on the tea bar.

Please remember that everything has to be

paid for and please do not take anything from

the tea bar without paying for it first.

Otherwise we will end up having to reduce the

range of items that are in stock to only those

low cost items (tea and coffee only).

Saturday Sailing

Saturdays sailing has continued throughout

the summer, with the club paying for an

instructor to come down more or less every

Saturday from May to September. This is a

considerable outlay for the club so we need to

make sure that it is a facility that is useful for

club members and I would welcome your

thoughts as to whether we have got this right.

Have we got the right mix of formal and

informal coaching? Do we need to look at the

dates andmaybe take a break in August and

continue again in September? Your thoughts

on this would be welcome

September 3rd sees the our annual regatta

and the aim this is year is to a have a range of

racing events to make this as inclusive for all

our club members – see Sailing Secretary’s

Report for more details.

So here’s hoping that the winds continue to

blow and the sun continues to shine and we

can all look forward to some happy sailing

BART’S BASH 2016 @GTSC

The world’s largest sailing event will take place

over a weekend this year, with GTSC joining in

on Sunday 18th September. The ASSF (Andrew

Simpson Sailing Foundation) who organise

Bart’s Bash have supported GTSC very well

over the last 2 years and therefore the club

feels it is important that we participate. Bart’s

Bash is a charity fundraiser – GTSC do not ask

members to raise funds at other events during

the year, so it would be great if we can make

this annual event a huge success.

The fun starts at 13.00 with a BBQ, with racing

commencing at 14.30.

Costs: Juniors £5.00 / Adults £10.00 to include

BBQ and tea. An absolute bargain – lunch, a

great afternoon’s racing and tea!

Racing Rules – How do I know

who’s in the right?

We all know the racing rules of sailing can be

confusing but it’s important for the safety and

enjoyment of all that they are followed.

At the moment if someone breaks a rule the

only options are for the party in the wrong to

immediately do “two turns” (turn the boat

through 720o including two gybes and two

tacks) or for one of the boats to ”Protest” the

other. As a Protest hearing can be quite

adversarial and means a boat is disqualified it

rarely happens and no one really learns from

the incident.

To make it easier for everyone to better

understand the rules (and reduce the effect of

a minor misdemeanour on the results) GTSC is

adopting the RYA Alternative Rules procedure.

If there is an incident on the water there are

now two additional ways to clarify who was

right:

Ask a Rules Advisor for an informal hearing

after the race to review if any rules were

broken and who was in the wrong. This should

only take around 5-10 minutes. A party in the

wrong would then be invited to take a small

“Exoneration penalty” (20% of their finishing

position with a minimum of 2 places). Taking

the penalty is not compulsory but encouraged!

Fill in a Protest form as normal but ask the

OOD to arrange an “RYA Arbitration” session.

If both helms agree then a simplified version of

a protest hearing is arranged with a Rules

Advisor. The maximum penalty that can be

imposed is the “Exoneration penalty”.

We held a training course earlier in the year to

get enough people trained as Rules Advisors to

start it off, but if you would like to become one

please speak to Mark Hayzelden (or a member

of the Committee). We aren’t formally

rostering people to cover particular races, the

hope is we have enough people trained such

that at any given event there will be at least

one trained person present.

The people who have been trained as Rules

Advisors are:

Elspeth Drew

Neil Grant

Jane Howe

John Howe

Mark Hayzelden

Rob Jones

Miles Lidbetter

Simon Lidbetter

This is a simplified version of the process, if

you want to know more please see the RYA

“Rules Disputes Guidance Notes” document at

http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/racing-rules . If

you want to know more about the sailing rules

in general we have a couple of copies of “Paul

Elvstrom Explains the Racing Rules of Sailing”

Page 5: BURGEE SUMMER 2016 - Goring Thames Sailing Club · 2016. 8. 27. · GTSC Regatta 3rd September 4th September The GTSC Regatta Saturday 3rd September is fast approaching, including

available for loan and there is a copy for

reference in the OOD hut. The second part of

the book takes typical racing situations and

explains which rules apply and is extremely

useful! (There is also a Rules Dispute Poster at

the end of this edition of Burgee)

Happy sailing!

Rail & Lost Property

The ‘Sail Rail’ is bowing under the weight of a

huge number of wetsuits which have been

outgrown by juniors. Before you go off and

buy new kit for your growing cherubs, have a

look on the Sail Rail and see if there is anything

which will fit them for this season. If you see

something suitable please either swap it for an

item of yours that you no longer need, or put a

donation in the blue tin by the telephone.

If you’ve left something behind at GTSC, it

should end up in the lost property bins which

are located in the disabled toilet. If you find

something on the premises which appears to

have been left behind, please put it in the lost

property bins – please do not hang it on the

Sail Rail as its rightful owner may be a tad

disappointed!

........................................................ Junior Jottings!

The start of the summer is a mad few weeks

for junior sailors at GTSC and then comes

August, so before we forget let’s not forget!!

Thames Challenge 2016

The same All Girls team that won the Team

Racing event in 2015, did the double by

winning again at Reading SC; well to be

completely honest, they were joint first with

Page 7: BURGEE SUMMER 2016 - Goring Thames Sailing Club · 2016. 8. 27. · GTSC Regatta 3rd September 4th September The GTSC Regatta Saturday 3rd September is fast approaching, including

Dorchester who were captained by Dan Batty,

who’s in the National Topper Squad, and on tie

break GTSC Girls came second with GTSC Boys

third and our mixed team 8th.

NSSA Regatta The following week rivalries were put to one

side as many of our sailors joined forces with

Dorchester Dan and 30 other juniors to train

for the Oxfordshire squad at Farmoor, before

heading off to the North Sea and Yarmouth for

the week long NSSA Regatta.

Faced with tides of 3.5 knots, half the 4.7 laser

fleet did not even make the first mark on day

one, whilst hypothermia hit 8 competitors

including two from GTSC on the second day,

who afterwards swopped tee shirts and shorts

for wet suits as, despite much sunshine, they

realised we were still on and sometimes in the

North Sea!

With Dan Batty coming 3rd/ 62, the quality of

racing was clearly top class, so our Dan Nicoll

coming 35/62 was a very respectable result,

beating all the single-handed Oxfordshire

sailors on the Wednesday.

Alicia Condie, in her first ever national event

on the sea, came 54/62, whilst her Sister Olivia

was 34/44 racing her laser 4.7 for the first time

ever.

Rosie Turtle came 23/44 despite a nasty injury

half way through the week, but achieved a

stunning personal best in one race of 10th.

Small wonder she’s entering the zone squad

selection competition in September.

Emily Foster and Alice Baillie came 20/25 in

the Feva but again showed what they were

capable of with a PB of 12th.

Camping was in the dry this year, with Andy

and Corinna helping supervise and loosely

chaperone. All the sailors from Oxfordshire

were great ambassadors and many are looking

forward to next year’s to be held inland at

Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire with the

prospect of bunk beds indoors for those who

book early in lieu of canvass!

Condie and Rosie Turtle were in Lasers, Dan

Nicoll and Alicia Condie in Toppers and Alice

Bailie and Emily Foster in a Feva. The team

came 2nd overall.

The conditions at Great Yarmouth were very

challenging as the tides were very strong, but

everyone battled through it and enjoyed

themselves, despite not getting enough sleep,

the rain (less than last year though), and mild

hyperthermia!!!!

Launching off of the beach was interesting as

the wheels on our boat trailers got very stuck

in the sand, but once we were out on the

water the sailing was amazing. It was the first

time most of us had done reaching on the sea

and it is very different even to sailing at

Farmoor; we had to learn how to use the tides

and waves to our advantage in racing.

Despite being a very hard week it is an

amazing opportunity and I have enjoyed it

completely both times that I have taken part in

it. I would recommend it to anyone who asked

and I hope that next year even more people

from Goring get involved at Grafham Water!
