Page 3: Burleson Texas Official Visitor's Guide

Welcome to our vibrant community! These are exciting times in the City of Burleson. During your stay you will see why Burleson is a great place to be.

As a life-long resident, I have a few tips for making the most of your visit. Take the time to enjoy the fresh air along our hike and bike trails in the natural area behind Chisenhall Fields or while fishing at Bailey Lake. You will definitely want to visit Old Town where you will find great shops and restaurants, live music, a history mu-seum and even ghost tours on Friday and Saturday evenings.

If you are looking for aquatic recreation, there are a couple of places to cool off. Pirates Cove, Burleson’s first water park is lo-cated on IH-35W and offers indoor/outdoor entertainment options for you and your family to enjoy. Additionally, the Burleson Recreation Center has an outdoor pool as well as indoor swimming area complete with water slides, vortex pools, a current river, and a five-lane exercise lap pool.

If you are considering relocation, Burleson is a great place to live, learn, work and play, through every stage of life. We have an outstanding economic climate and business cul-ture, and have been recognized as one of the 100 best communities for young people in America. Whether it’s building great parks and neighborhoods, investing in public safety, promoting economic development or encouraging the attainment of higher education through the innovative Burleson Opportunity Fund, we never stop looking for ways to make Burleson a great place for families and businesses alike.

With progressive and responsible governance, a pro-business climate, educated labor force, excellent schools, a low crime rate, and strategic access to major interstates, railways and airports it is easy to see why Burleson is a great place to do business. If you have an interest in joining the growing list of businesses that have experienced the Burleson boom, please give me a call. Our economic development team would be happy to help ensure your transition is a smooth one.

No matter what brings you to town, take the time to experience some of the “good life” Burleson has to offer. And know you are always welcome back...for a weekend or a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Ken Shetter Mayor of Burleson, Texas

There’s no quesTion that your own home-town will forever be embossed in your heart as you carry on through the adven-ture known as life. However, if you’re for-tunate enough to make a trek down the I-35 corridor and find yourself in the big “little” community known as Burleson, hometown may not be too far away. You see, Burleson has every amenity and con-venience that you’d want from the every-day bustle of a thriving metropolis, but somehow manages to maintain the sweet sincerity of a community you’d find in a smaller outer-market neighborhood. Bur-leson’s history as a commissioned town dates back to 1912, but its heritage can be traced even further back in time than that. It all started with a hard-working reverend and a railroad.

Henry C. Renfro heard the “calling” and entered Baylor University in 1953 where he met a man that would change his life forever. After graduating he moved to Johnson County where he married Mol-lie Ray and founded the Bethesda Baptist Church. While serving in the 21st Texas Infantry Regiment in the Confederate Army, Renfro crossed paths with his for-mer teacher who helped him acquire a post as chaplain in Louisiana. Not for-getting his roots, Renfro returned to his church after the conflict ended, resuming his post as pastor, as well as rancher and farmer. In 1880 when the Missouri, Kan-sas, and Texas railroad began developing a route from Fort Worth to Hillsboro they needed some land for a depot along the way. With a handshake agreement, Rever-end Renfro offered a parcel of his land in

exchange for a small sum and the right to name the new town site. Where would he get the inspiration for such a name, you ask? Well, the name of a former teacher and lifelong friend, Dr. Rufus C. Burle-son (and later President of Baylor Univer-sity), seemed all-too appropriate. In 1881 Burleson officially became a major depot along the railroad and so began the more than 100 years of thriving history that still grows today.

In just a year it became necessary to open a post office and John L. Dickey, the first postmaster, found headquarters inside a local saloon in current day Old Town. Churches and stores soon followed and the community continued to grow. In the first decade the population had grown to more than 200 residents in a community

organized around agriculture and the rais-ing of livestock. The next 10 years brought a general store, doctors, cotton gins, and other business, as well as another 100+ settlers. With so much going on there was also a need to keep the community con-nected and the Burleson Banner news-paper was created to handle the task. By 1900 the need for education was apparent and the discontinued Red Oak Academy in nearby Brushy Mound was literally moved on wagons to Burleson for the amount of $500.

In 1936, through several rebuilds from fire, the school added a remarkable $20,000 gymnasium with the help of Em-mett Harris, a local contractor. Texas At-torney General McCraw was the keynote speaker and he declared, “This building is

6 BURLESON VISITOR’S GUIDE | SUMMER 2012 BURLESON, TEXAS ★ THE PLACE TO BE

Page 9: Burleson Texas Official Visitor's Guide

a monument that time never can destroy. Nothing can destroy the deeds and influ-ences of the young men and women who will receive their training here.” The Bur-leson School was the grandest building in town and the new gymnasium would serve as a local gathering spot for every-one in the community. On any given week you would find banquets, recitals, class-es, shows, and fairs for the whole town. The summer would see it transform into a skating rink and graduation was a peren-nial favorite. 1947 brought the opening of the first elementary school named after long-time teacher Nola Dunn. Unique to this school on the corner of Ellison & Dobson Street(s) was the first public lunch room that allowed all students to eat together. Friday’s “Sandwich Day” was a child favorite as they were allowed to choose between bologna, tuna, and PB & J’s. 2009 began the construction on the new $22,000,000 Nola Dunn campus but fear not, the original gymnasium and lunch room remain in this wonderful new educational facility.

Officially earning the title of “town” in 1912 and “city” in 1938, Burleson has not only survived but thrived. The Red Oak Academy, the Interurban Railway, the First Baptist Church of Burleson, and of course the Renfro-Clark home built in 1894 all stand as historical landmarks in Burleson. As banking and business grew and agriculture faded, Burleson has uniquely adapted and continually grown in numbers. From the original handful of settlers to today’s population of well over 36,000 within the city limits, this home-town community is exploding with retail, manufacturing, industrial, dining, recre-ation, education, art, entertainment, and housing. There’s a lot that’s happened in the last 100 years. We’re glad you stopped in today, but if you’d like to really get to know us, stick around. We’ve got some stories!

CHAMBER of Commerce

iiT was 1965 when 75 members of the Bur-leson Lions Club were gathered to discuss the industrial and economic development of their rapidly growing community. In order to help lead their city into the next century it was all too apparent that a per-manent Chamber of Commerce was nec-essary to answer the call.

Jack Taylor, area businessman, and County Judge Herschel C. Winn created the charter and bylaws of the proposed organization and the first Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce was officially founded on April 18, 1966. By 1980, the Chamber had built a solid membership of 320 businesses. The operation budget had increased from $2,000 to more than

$41,000 in that time. In fact, growth was so strong that they were desperately in need of a facility. After a quick fundraiser gathered $20,000, Board Chair, Less Sells presided at the opening dedication cer-emonies in 1983.

Going stronger than ever, the Chamber still resides in that very building where members of the local community are constantly coming and going. Business owners and citizens of the Burleson area know that if they have a question or need, the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce is the place to go for answers. Today, the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce is one of the most active chambers in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. From regular

PARKS & Recreation

WHERE WE PLAYWhen it comes to letting our hair down, Burleson spares no expense to provide world-class parks and facilities for our community of friends to gather and enjoy some good old-fashioned R&R. Burleson is a thriving business community, but we also understand the need to recharge and spend time with our family as priority number one. In fact, we believe that the Burleson Parks & Recreation facilities are vital to the quality of life we’ve come to celebrate. In total, the city maintains 18 parks with a total acreage of 348 acres of developed parkland. It sounds good on paper, but you truly have to see it to experience just how great our parks really are!

The City of Burleson Recreation Department literally offers something for everyone when it comes to classes and activities. Whether it’s tumbling or dance, computer train-ing or reading, aerobics and fitness, or just some plain fun in and around water, we’ve got you covered. If the sport of competition is your speed, check out one of the many softball, volleyball, or basketball leagues. The Community Center Gymnasium boasts a hardwood floor that is available for both residents and non-residents to enjoy. You’ll also find meeting rooms available for private functions. For our “more experienced” residents, Burleson also has a Senior Activity Center located at 216 SW Johnson Ave that is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. So, no matter your age or your recre-ational pleasure, you’re sure to have a great time at any one of our fantastic locations for play. You can reach the Burleson Recreation Department staff by calling 817-295-8168.

CHISENHALL FIELDS SPORTS COMPLEX – New!Completed in September 2010, this $15M sporting mecca literally sees thousands of competitive youth and their cheering patrons every single month. From the manicured fields to the beautiful concrete walkways to the covered bleacher seating, Chisenhall Fields stands in a class of its own. Come see the 10 baseball fields, 5 softball fields, 2 practice fields, 1 football field, and walking trail. Or simply swing through to make use of the playground, picnic areas, pavilion, and concessions. Bring your camera and your good mood. This place is great!

THE BRiCkBurleson’s New State-of-the-Art Recreation CenterAlso completed in 2010, the $20M Bur-leson Recreation Center (uniquely tagged as the BRiCk) is a 65,000 square foot state-of-the-art fitness facility, community center, and natatorium (place to swim in-doors – I had to look it up, too!). The building includes 2 gyms, a large aero-bics/dance studio, 2 large meeting rooms, and babysitting facilities. The natatorium (ok, swim area) includes a 5-lane indoor pool, lazy river, spiral slide, water play-ground, and 2 party rooms. The indoor pool is open year round but there’s also an outdoor pool, too, for seasonal enjoy-ment. Upstairs, you’ll find a suspended indoor jogging track, free weight area, 2 strength circuits, and more than 50 car-dio workout machines. Sitting on 34 acres right in the heart of town, this massive facility is at the least, very impressive.

BURLESON VISITOR’S GUIDE | SUMMER 2012 19

Page 22: Burleson Texas Official Visitor's Guide

Oour people, our community, and our heritage certainly tug the strings of pride within our hearts, but it’s our drive for future growth and development that will lead Burleson down the path of success in the decades to come. Already a market leader in the DFW Metroplex, Burleson’s commitment to recruit and promote sound business foundations and opportunities for corporations large and small is something many are taking notice of. Burleson is one of the fastest growing cit-ies in Texas, and particularly in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. While it took 94 years to eclipse $1 billion in property valuations, it only took another six years to raise it to $2 billion. As we celebrate our centennial this year, we do so with an open invitation for corporations to take a close look at the many benefits and opportunities waiting for them through a partnership with our city.

Partnership is the key term here. We’re ex-cited and, more importantly, prepared to provide a financially opportune business partnership that will position your firm for growth and return for years to come. Of course, quality of life is important to you and those you employ. We believe that one’s a no-brainer. Within the walls of our com-munity our citizens stand up every day with

full hearts in appreciation of their commu-nity. We’re front-runners when it comes to that arena. What you may not know about is the velocity with which our business com-munity is quickly rising to the top. Our city will only keep growing with more than 10 square miles of developable land within the city limits, as well as an expansive extraterri-torial jurisdiction (ETJ) bringing great oppor-tunities for businesses to locate or expand in the Burleson area. Our low property tax en-vironment is a quick attribution to said eco-nomic growth. The population has seen over 85% growth since 2000 and we don’t forecast anything slowing down. Not only is Burleson growing, but Tarrant and Johnson counties have also seen a very solid 19% population boom in that same time.

Texas is ranked as the No. 2 state in the U.S. for corporate relocations, and the Metroplex is also a sound No. 2 as an area among hun-dreds of regions. CEOs and executives rec-ognize the low cost of living, high quality of life, and the fact the area is home to the state’s largest and most educated workforce. The fact that our region also has no personal or corporate income tax certainly doesn’t hurt, either. The DFW Metroplex is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S.

and generates 33% of Texas’ gross domestic product, 29% of all retail sales, and 28% of all Texas jobs. This is all taking place while only occupying a total of 3% of the land available in Texas. This region is home to 25 headquarters of Fortune 500 companies and is considered the second-largest high-tech economy behind only Silicon Valley. The reality: economic possibilities are endless in this vastly booming market.

And, it just makes sense that this growth is taking place. Perfectly positioned along the IH-35W NAFTA Superhighway that connects Laredo in the south all the way to Minne-sota in the north, Burleson is a key junc-ture in between. Just as settlers recognized some 100 years ago that Burleson “just made sense” as a key stop along the line of trans-portation, so are the businesses of today and beyond realizing. We’ve invested and cre-ated a Corridor Plan and Overlay District to spur economic development of this vital as-set with new retail, employment centers, and commercial offices. Not one to just sit and wait for the business to come to us, we’ve continued to promote that growth and de-velopment with our new 160 acre Highpoint Business Park that began in 2010. Significant road improvements, a regional storm water detention facility, and the necessary public infrastructure have created shovel-ready, build-to-suit sites along this important ar-tery known as the IH-35W corridor. Ground has already been broken and businesses are putting down roots. There are multiple sites available and waiting for you to join.

Whatever your business, social, or educa-tional needs, the City of Burleson has oppor-tunities for you. With an economy supported by gas & oil exploration, a thriving business base and “hometown” quality of life, Burle-son, TX truly represents “The Good Life.” Whether you’re opening a new business, expanding your existing one, raising a fam-ily, or just simply visiting, we’re honored you

stopped in. Thank you for being part of the Burleson community!

HIGHPOINT BUSINESS PARKHighpoint Business Park is adjacent to IH-35W at one of the highest elevations in Bur-leson. The 160 acre master-planned park was designed to be a mixed use growth center capable of providing for campus business locations, as well as distribution and flex-space buildings. The plan set aside signifi-cant green areas which include walking and biking trails to promote the preservation of the natural environment. Strategically locat-ed to provide easy access from IH-35W, US Hwy 67, SH 174, and the future development of SH 121 currently in progress, Highpoint is a perfect location for any new business. Only minutes from Spinks Airport which of-fers a full service FBO, three flight schools, multiple maintenance facilities, car rental, AWOS, and nearby hotel accommodations, transportation is convenient. Highpoint is less than 8 miles from I-20 that connects Fort Worth and Dallas and a mere 40 miles from DFW International Airport. Speaking of nearby, Highpoint is a 40 minute commute to an educated workforce of nearly 6 million strong. Of course, the three minute commute to Hidden Creek Golf Course, voted top five public golf courses in the state by the Dallas Business Journal doesn’t hurt either!

The Highpoint Business Park Master Plan, along with the City’s Comprehensive Plan calls for a mix of businesses, distribution centers, light manufacturing facilities, and flex space buildings to anchor the area. The infrastructure is sound and the location is breathtaking. The only thing missing is you. We’ll save a seat!

Six schools in Burleson are rated “Exemplary” and four more have achieved “Recognized” status according to the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Due to the rapidly growing school-age population, the BISD and citizens of Burleson approved a $259M capital improvement program in 2006. This program allowed a total of seven new schools to be built in Burleson.

mMore than just an everyday brick and mor-tar information center, Burleson Visitor’s Center & Heritage Museum is alive with history. Swing on by and visit with the vol-unteers of the Heritage Foundation or take a stroll through Car #330. Get directions for the historic walking tour(s). The whole fam-ily is sure to enjoy it!

1912: The Fort Worth Southern Traction Company built the Interurban Railway through Burleson in 1912 as a stop on the route between Fort Worth and Cleburne. The Burleson depot and train ticket office for this electric railway was located at 124 Ellison St. The Interurban brought the first electricity to Burleson, so naturally the first Edison light bulb in town lit its interior. The Burleson Vis-itor’s Center now occupies the building and is operated by the Burleson Heritage Foun-dation. Within its historic walls are some of the best preserved history of this community and its people.

1931: When the FWSTC had first opened in 1912, it inherited five cars from its par-ent line between Fort Worth and Dallas, in-cluding Car #330. Making three round trips a day between Fort Worth and Cleburne, it brought an endless variety of supplies: dry goods, tractor parts, fresh ice and perhaps, just as important, shipments of ice cream for the soda fountain inside the depot. Frequent

service to Burleson gave our local merchants access to all the goods of Fort Worth and Dallas and they could expect delivery no lat-er than the next day. The car had originally been painted “Pullman Green.” However, fol-lowing an automobile accident in Burleson in 1926, all cars on the line were repainted in light orange known as “Transit Orange” to increase its visibility on the many city streets it crossed. The car served faithfully until op-erations ceased. Car #330 was retired in 1938 and purchased by a rancher living near Cres-son to be used as a feed storage barn. John Meyers rescued Car #330 in the 1990’s and donated it to the Burleson Visitor’s Center for restoration. In February 2010, Burleson City Council members approved an agreement with the Heritage Foundation that makes the City the sole owner of the rail car. The Foun-dation operates and manages the rail car as part of the Burleson Visitor’s Center – which is also owned by the city.
