RIVERFRONT & LAKE PARKS

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge Located in the Indian River Lagoon on the east coast of Florida, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was the nation’s fi rst national Wildlife Refuge. 5.5 acre rookery island, supports important bird rookeries, key fi sh spawning sites, and a globally important juvenile sea turtle nursery. Bird species nest on Pelican Island proper, including brown pelicans, wood storks, egrets, herons, ibises, anhingas, oystercatchers, and cormorants.

St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park This site preserves open grassy forests of longleaf pine that were once commonplace throughout Florida. The pine fl atwoods form a backdrop for other biological communities that are home to many native plants and animals, including over 50 protected species.

Airboat Tours Airboat tours of the beautiful Blue Cypress conservation area are educational, exciting, and informative. On a one hour tour, you will see and learn about alligators, birds, fi sh and fl ora of the marsh. Photographic opportunities abound, so bring your camera and create memories.

Birding Indian River County has over 20,000 acres of preserve ideal for hiking, birding and horseback riding. The St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park, part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, is considered one of the top birding locations in the U.S.

Fishing By Land or by sea, your fi shing options are endless in Indian River County. Whether you sink a line for a bass, red snapper or snook, you’re sure to get hooked.

Watersports With “water, water everywhere” and 26 miles of beaches, boating, kayaking, fi shing, scuba diving, surfi ng and water sports are endless.

Archie Carr National Wildlife RefugeArchie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, a 248-acre refuge spanning 20.5 miles long, was designated to protect habitat for what is the most signifi cant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the Western Hemisphere, and the most signifi cant area for green turtle nesting in North America.

Environmental Learning Center Hold live marine organisms from a touch tank, watch native fi sh in gigantic aquariums, walkalong elevated boardwalks winding through a mangrove forest as you explore ELC’s 64 acre island campus.

Sebastian Inlet The premier

coast, this park is a favorite for anglers, surfers and boaters.

McKee Botanical Gardens Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, McKee Botanical Garden is an 18-acre tropical garden supporting a dense and diverse botanical collection as well as several restored architectural treasures.

Indian River Citrus MuseumVisit the Indian River Citrus Museum to discover how citrus seeds made their way to Florida and the story of how area pioneers established the most distinguished citrus fruit in the world. Open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday - Friday.

IRC Historical Society The 1903 Vero Beach train station is home to the Historical Society Exhibition Center. Artifacts, information and maps about the county’s historic sites and structures. Open 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Hallstrom HouseBuilt in 1918, the museum is on the National Registry of Historic Places and was once a pineapple plantation. The farmhouse documents and demonstrates a bygone way of life in southern Indian River County. Open Tuesday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., group tours by appointment.

McLarty Treasure Museum The McLarty Treasure Museum located on the site of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet salvaging camp is a designated National Historical Landmark. Modern salvaging techniques have yielded new discoveries that continue into the present. Dedicated to telling the continuing story of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet, artifacts include gear from the galleons, weapons, and treasure.

Veterans Memorial IslandVeterans Memorial Island Sanctuary is now a quiet haven for refl ection on the sacrifi ces made by the men and women in the Armed Forces of our Country. It contains memorials to the men and women of Indian River County who died in combat while defending our Country.

UDT Navy SEAL Museum The National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum dedicated solely to preserving the history of the Navy SEALs and their predecessors, including the Underwater Demolition Teams, Naval Combat Demolition Units, Offi ce of Strategic Services Maritime Units and Amphibious Scouts and Raiders. Hours Tues-Sat: 10am to 4pm Sun: 12pm to 4pm

Mel Fisher Treasure Museum When you enter Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum you will join the millions who have witnessed the most spectacular collection of Spanish artifacts and treasure ever assembled. You will also be granted the opportunity to watch as the treasure, still being uncovered from the 1715 Fleet, grows in quantity and spectacle in the recent recovery display.story of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet. Original artifacts are on display including gear from the galleons, weapons, and treasure. Open Monday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.;Sundays 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Laura Riding Jackson HomeLaura Riding Jackson, widely noted avant-garde poet of the 1920s and 1930s, settled in Indian River County in the latter part of her life in a “cracker” style house built around 1910. The home is an example of a disappearing architectural style and a symbol of an older, more environmentally sensitive way of life.Original artifacts are on display including gear from the galleons, weapons, and treasure. Open Oct - May on Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Sunrise TheatreThe pristine, beautifully restored, intimate 1,200-seat Sunrise Theatre, located in Historic downtown Fort Pierce, presents national touring Broadway shows, musical and comedy acts, ballet and opera companies with full orchestras, country stars and classic rock icons. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sunrise opened its doors on August 1, 1923 as the largest theatre on Florida’s East Coast between Jacksonville and Miami.

Riverside Theatre As the largest producing accredited professional theater in the state, Riverside Theatre offers its audience over 255 performances each year. These performances range from the contemporary dramas, comedies and lavish musicals that light up the season to a variety of stars that come to Riverside each year as part of their Special Events and Distinguished Lecturer Series.

Vero Beach Museum of Art The Museum is the largest cultural arts facility of its kind on Florida’s Treasure Coast featuring fi ve art galleries, two sculpture parks, Museum Art School, auditorium, great hall, art library, museum store and a museum café. The Museum offers changing exhibitions of world-class art, group tours, daily activities to engage children and adults, Free Admission Saturdays, art events and so much more. Discover your inner artist at a Cork, Canvas and Company night, enjoy an art seminar or take a guided docent tour and learn about the Museum’s permanent collection.

Vero Beach OperaVero Beach Opera promotes, supports, professionally produces and advances the art of grand opera; promotes opera education by conducting Opera Studies classes through a partnership with the Vero Beach Museum of Art; sponsors professional singers of classical and semi-classical music from the community and provides local artists the opportunity to perform through our Resident Artists Program

Vero Beach Theatre Guild This all-volunteer guild formed in 1958, produces fi ve high-caliber, Broadway-style shows. Auditions are open to all. The guild also sponsors workshops in various theatre disciplines, and sends a mini-troupe called “Guild on the Go” into the community to entertain. Traditions include an opening night champagne reception with the cast.

A SHOPPER’S PARADISE

In Indian River County, intimate boutiques and gourmet dining establishments are tucked into cozy, tropical settings. Explore our shops and restaurants on the island, mainland, in the historic downtown area or along the riverfront.

In Vero Beach, nationally-known stores are located in the Route 60 corridor with a variety of shopping centers, the Indian River Mall and the discount opportunities at The Vero Beach Outlets. The Indian River Mall is anchored by Dillard’s, J.C. Penney, Macy’s and Sears. Nearby Vero Beach Fashion Outlets is an inviting outdoor shopping destination for famous designer and brand-name merchandise. Other opportunities abound in this corridor with other big retailers like Lowes, Target, Offi ce Depot, Sam’s Club, Best Buy, Sports Authority and more.

Take a stroll along Ocean Drive and surrounding areas and you’ll fi nd a charming beachside shopping area that’s elegant but unpretentious. The boutiques here offer fashionable clothing and trendy gifts, and the restaurants serve a variety of formal and family fare.

The U.S. Highway 1 thoroughfare includes the Vero Mall at 12th Street. The mall is anchored by Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Publix, SteinMart and Starbucks. Restaurants, automobile dealerships and shopping plazas complete the makeup of this busy main artery through Vero Beach.

Go north to Sebastian to fi nd a riverfront busy with hotels, restaurants, boat rentals and shops. Day or evening, the area is hopping with activity. U.S. Highway 1 continues to offer the most shopping in Sebastian, including antique shops, grocery stores, dining, retail stores and “The Village,” an eclectic shopping complex.

In Fellsmere are some of Indian River County’s best-kept secrets. Go antique shopping and discover some local history by visiting the historic Fellsmere Inn or dine at the Marsh Landing Restaurant. A blend of the old and the new, Fellsmere also has several Latin American bodegas offering fresh pastries, tortillas, hot peppers and many other specialty foods.

Indian River County Shooting Range The Indian River County Public Shooting Range’s state-of-the-art facility consists of a 5-stand (shotgun) range, a pistol range consisting of 35 fi ring stations, a rifl e range with 29 stations including two 200-yard target fi ring stations, an air gun range, a 65-yard archery range, as well as walk-through sporting clays and a walk-through archery course.

Historic Dodgertown Historic Dodgertown is an 80 acre multi-sport complex managed by former Dodger owner Peter O’Malley. The home of Dodger Spring Trainings from 1948-2008, it was the starting place for six World Championships and 14 N.L. Pennant-winning teams. Numerous Baseball Hall of Fame players trained on these hallowed grounds, as well as 20 visits from professional teams in Asia. The all-inclusive facility, gives teams of all ages the unique opportunity to train, play, dine and stay together in on-site villas. Participants utilize one of 10 playing fi elds, including a new cloverleaf of youth baseball/softball fi elds with concessions area and new multi-purpose fi eld for football, soccer and lacrosse.
