TYPES OF BURNSThere are three primary types of burns,
distinguished by the severity of damage caused
to the injured:
First Degree Burns
Second Degree Burns
Third Degree Burns
FIRST DEGREEBURNS
First degree burns are superficial burns.
They only affect the outermost layer of
skin. Signs of a first degree burn
include:
Redness
Minor swelling or inflammation
Dry or peeling skin
Surface pain
FIRST DEGREEBURN TREATMENTFirst degree burns can usually be treated with first
aid at home.
Soak the wound in cool water, but not ice water
Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the pain
Apply a soothing aloe vera gel
Apply antibiotic cream and a loose gauze wrapping
to protect the area

SECOND DEGREE
Second degree burns are more serious because
they cause damage beyond the top layers of skin.
Second degree burns have characteristics such as:
Skin blisters
Extremely red and sore skin
Wet appearance from burst blisters
SECOND DEGREEBURN TREATMENTSecond degree burns can be treated at home with
first aid:
Run the skin under cool water for at least 15 minutes
Apply antibiotic cream
Take over-the-counter pain medication
Seeking emergency medical assistance for large
burn areas, especially those on the hands, feet,
face or other sensitive areas is always advisable.
THIRD DEGREEBURNS Third degree burns are the most serious burn injury.
They involve damage to every layer of skin. You may
feel less pain with a third degree burn because of the
extent of nerve damage. Third degree burns are
characterized by skin that is:
White and waxy
Charred and dark
Leathery and raised
THIRD DEGREEBURN TREATMENTCall 911 immediately if you or your loved one has

Third degree burns should never be treated with
