Why should you read this paper?

The word architectureisimportanthere,inthatsimplicitymustbebuiltintotheinfrastructurefoundation,aspartofitsDNA.ItisnotpossibletoachievearchitecturalefficiencybysimplyhidingunderlyinginfrastructurecomplexitywithaslickGUIorcontrolplane.

Data movement servicesFederateddatamovementdeliveredunderthenameHP3PARPeerMotionareavailableforbothHP3PARandStoreVirtual.Thesetechnologiesenableonline,non-disruptive,federateddatamobilitybetweenpeersystemsforworkloadbalancing,utilizationefficiency,andlifecycleassetmanagementacrosssystemsinyourdatacenter.EachplatformalsoprovidesRemoteCopydatareplicationservicesbetweensystemsfordisasterrecoverypurposes.
Thissamefederateddatamobilityenablessimple,self-deployabledatamigrationforeithernon- or minimally disruptive movement of application data from legacy platforms to Converged Storage.Today,this“OnlineImport”functionalitycanpainlesslymigratedatafromEMCVMAX,VNX,andCLARiiONCX4disksystemstoHP3PARStoreServStorage.
Toenablemovementofdatabetweenhostsandstoragesystems,HPhasdevelopedsolutionssuchasFlatSANintegrationbetweenHPBladeSystemandHP3PARStoreServviaHPVirtualConnect.HPisalsobringingconvergenceintothestoragefabricwithsolutionsliketheHPN5900CP,whichsimultaneouslysupportsFibreChannel,EthernetoriSCSI,andFCoEconnections.TheHPStoreFabricportfolioprovidesawiderangeofchoice,includingstoragenetworking from Brocade and Cisco.
Again,thepoweroftheHPConvergedStoragevisionandstrategyisthatthesedatamovementservicescanfacilitateinteroperabilitybetweenstandaloneHP3PARStoreServandStoreVirtualdeployments and the fully integrated HP ConvergedSystem products that leverage those technologies,deliveringchoiceandsimplicitywithoutcompromise(figure3).

Data retention servicesTohandlethemassivedataexplosion,youmaybelookingtomanagecostsbyoffloadingdatafromyourprimarystoragesystemsbystoringsomeofthatdataonlower-costplatformsofferinglong-termdataretention.HPbelievesthatobjectstoragecanprovidethelowestcostapproachfordataretentionandoffersanumberofsolutionapproaches.
BuiltonthesameunderlyingtechnologyasHPStoreOnceBackup,theHPStoreAllArchivesystemisascale-out,filebasedarchitecturethatalsoprovidesOpenStackSwiftAPI-compatible,object-basedaccesstorepositoriesoflow-coststoragewithinasingledatacenter.UsingpatentedmetadatasearchcapabilitiesfromHPLabs,theHPStoreAllExpressQuerytechnologyallowscustomerstosearchdatarepositories100,000timesfaster—atthescaleofhalfabillionobjectsorfiles.6HPStoreAllandExpressQueryhavebeenintegratedintotheHPIDOLmeaning-basedanalyticsengineanditsrelatedsoftwaretitlesincludingHPControlPointandHPConsolidatedArchive.HPControlPointhelpsassessdatalifecycleusageandprovidesapolicy-drivenapproachtodrivedatatolower-costsolutionslikeStoreAll.ConsolidatedArchiveprovidesformalarchivingsolutionsforrecordsretentionandcompliance.
Mainstreamuseofobjectaccessfaceshurdlessuchasaffordableimplementation,enterprise-classresiliency,andapplicationdependencies.Today’sobjectstoragesoftwarefaces triple-copy overhead for resiliency and most data center applications were not designed towritetoobjectstores.BasedoninternallydevelopedHPintellectualproperty,HPStoreVirtualObjecttechnologystoresonlyasinglecopyofeachobjectyetcanhandlefailuresfromtheboxlevelallthewayupthroughtheentiredatacenterthankstointegrationwithHPHelionOpenStack.
Inthefuture,policy-baseddatamobilityfromon-premisetocloudusingStoreVirtualObjectstoragecouldenablemetadatatostayonpremisesothatapplicationsdonotneedtochangeinordertoaccessoff-premisedata.Althoughthistechnologyisnotyetgenerallyavailable,itcanbepreviewedthroughapartnershipwithHPEnterpriseServices.
Converged management
Datacenteradministrationshouldnotrequireyoutolearndifferentstoragemanagementtoolsforaplethoraofdifferentstoragearchitectures,norshoulditentaildealingwithexternalvirtualizationappliancesandbackupsilos.Instead,youcanbuildaconsistentdatacenterwithpolymorphic storage architectures and federated data services. The last challenge with legacy storagecomplexityisthatmanagementshouldreallybeengineeredatthedatacenterlevel—notjustforyourstorage.
HPOneViewisanautomationhubthatprovidesconvergedmanagementandprovisioningofservers,storage,andnetworkingacrossthedatacenter.HP3PARistightlyintegratedintoOneViewtoallowprovisioningandmanagementthroughtheHPOneViewStorageResourceManagerplug-in.HPhasalsoreleasedanewelementconfigurationmanagementconsoleforHP3PARcalledtheHP3PARStoreServManagementConsole(SSMC),whichusesexactlythesamesearch-enabledframeworkasOneViewtoprovideaconsistentlookandfeelwithHPOneViewandtremendoussimplificationofstoragemanagement.WeplantoprovidesimilarintegrationandconsistencywithOneViewforStoreVirtualinthefuture.
CustomerscanalsoenabledatacenterwidemanagementconsistencyleveragingstandardRESTfulAPIsfromOpenStack,includingHPHelionOpenStack.Thisinvestmenttakesadvantageofacommonindustrylanguagethatenablestheautomatedorchestrationandprovisioningofallstoragedataservices—whethertheyareemployedbyphysicalorvirtualarrays,onpremiseorinthecloud.ThisapproachhasmadeHPthetopcontributortoOpenStackaccordingtoStackalytics data.8
A seamless transition to the New Style of IT
OnepartofHP’sstrategyistooptimizecustomers’existingenvironmentsbyprovidinginvestmentprotection.ExamplesincludedeliveringnewgenerationsofplatformsliketheHPXP7andHPMSA2040or1040,whichwerecompletelyrefreshed in the last year. The other part of HP’s strategyistooffercustomerstheopportunitytomodernize,withoneexamplebeingtheextremelysimpleupgradepathweprovidedfromHPEVAtoHP3PAR.Thisapproachtomodernizationincludesproviding customers with a seamless transition to the New Style of IT with HP Converged Storage. Andourstrategyistoprovidethatseamlesstransitionforourcompetitors’installedbasesas well.

Forexample,toautomatecloudservicesmanagement,HPhasaugmentedHPStoreVirtualwithanewOpenStackCinderinterfacewhichhasinturnenabledHPtoofferafullyfeaturedandlicensedcopyofStoreVirtualasastandardpartofHelionOpenStack—providinghighlyavailable,scale-outstorageforcloudcomputing.HPwasactuallytheleaddeveloperofthestandardandreferenceimplementationsofCinderwithsupportforbothHP3PARStoreServandStoreVirtual.
Lastly,bothHP3PARStoreServandStoreVirtualsupportthird-partyAPIstofacilitateintegratedmanagementwithsupportforStorageManagementInitiativeSpecification(SMI-S)andothermanagementAPIs,suchasthoseavailablefromVMware—includingVASAandVAAI.BothHP3PARandStoreVirtualsupporttheleadingthird-partychoicesforprovisioningsuchasVMwarevCenterviatheHPOneViewforVMwarevCenterplug-in,andsupportforMicrosoftSystemsCenterviatheHPStoreFrontforMSSCplug-in.
A vision that delivers value todaySofarinthispaperwe’vediscussedthedesignrequirementstoenableconsistentandcoherentdatacenterarchitecture.HPhasdeliveredonthoseneedswithHPConvergedStorage,asetof polymorphic storage platforms with federated data services and a converged approach to management.
Thousandsofcustomershavealreadymadetheswitchandhaveseenbenefitssuchas8xfasterprovisioning,40%lowerdatamigrationcosts,and75%lowercapacityrequirements.
Consumableaseitherflexiblestorageplatformsorturnkeybuildingblocks,HPConvergedStoragehasbeendesignedforsimplicityandallowscustomerstogetbetterreturnontheirinformationassets,infrastructureinvestments,andindividualadministrators—somethingthatHPcallsROItothepowerofthree.
What’s next? A new era for storage and workload convergence
TheultimategoalofHPConvergedStorageistoreducecomplexity,increaseagility,andsupportsustainabilityviaaconsistentandcoherentapproachtodatacenterarchitecture.Havingstartedexecutingthisstrategyin2011,HPisnowmovingthisvisionforwardwiththenextevolutionofconvergence,madepossiblebystoragepersonas.
Astorage personaisanativeimplementationwithinthestorageOSaimedatboostingutilizationandloweringcostsbymovingstorage-affinityrelatedworkloads(suchasdataaccess,protection,andanalytics)directlyintothestoragecontroller.Sofar,HPhasidentifiedand is devoting engineering resources to the following storage personas:
•Access—avarietyofprotocolsthatserveworkloadsacrossahybridclouddatacenter
•Analyze—forexample,SAPHANA,Hadoop,orVerticaanalyticswithinthestoragecontroller
•Protect—viaapplication-managedprotectionbuiltintothestoragecontroller
•Secure—basedongeographicassociationofanapplicationordataforaccesspurposes

HPrecentlypresentedthefirstapplicationofthisvisionwiththeintroductionofbothaccesspersonas(HP3PARStoreServFilePersona)andprotectpersonas(HPStoreOnceRMC).Inthefuture,HPplanstointroduceadditionalpersonastocoverotherworkloads.
AsHPcontinuestoevolvetosupporttheNewStyleofIT,HPConvergedStoragewillcontinuetobringstorageandcomputeclosertogethertoimproveperformancewhilealsoprovidingnewprovisioningmodelstospeedservicedelivery.Theuseofstoragepersonassimplifiestheautomationofresourceprovisioningand,inthefuture,willenabletheuseofabroker-bidmodelthatconnectsincomingrequeststotherightunderlyingstorageresources(bothonpremiseandastiersofstoragebasedinthecloud).Inthisbroker-bidmodel,whenanadministrator,software-definedapplication,orclouduserrequestsstorageresourceswithspecificrequirements,thoserequestsareroutedtoabroker,whichnegotiateswithavailablestorageresourcesviaopen,standards-basedAPIs—suchasthoseprovidedbyHPHelionOpenStack—using a biddingprocess.Itisthebroker’sjobtodeterminethroughthisbidding process the storagepersonabestsuitedtotheincomingrequestandthenautomaticallyanddynamicallyprovision underlying resources.
These future developments are logical extensions of the work that HP has already done tomodernizestoragearchitectureandabstractasetoffederateddataservicesandopenmanagementAPIstobetteraddressunpredictableneedsandenableaNewStyleofIT.Thismeansanewera,notjustforyourstorageoryourITinfrastructure,butalsoyourbusiness.
