Chief Officer’s Report

Welcome to a very busy edition of the BUZZ newsletter.

As you may know, we are now settled in new premises at the South Staffordshire Council offices. If you are passing through, please come in and say hello.

At their recent Board meeting our Trustees unanimously resolved to withdraw from further merger negotiations with our fellow CVS partners across Staffordshire.

This decision was made after considering carefully arguments for and against a merger. Trustees ultimately came to the view that it was in the best interests of communities in South Staffordshire, stakeholders and the voluntary and community organisations they support to remain an independent, locally-focused support and development organisation.

Trustees however also strongly felt that they should continue to maintain and foster strong links with Support Staffordshire as it evolves.

Accordingly with effect from that date we will no longer be known by the name “Support Staffordshire South Staffordshire” but will revert to the name “South Staffordshire Community & Voluntary Action” (which continues to be our legal name).

We look forward to continuing to work with and support the wider community in South Staffordshire, and wish Support Staffordshire well in going forward under their new structure.

We are now busy working on a new business plan for SSCVA which we intend to present to members at our AGM later this year.

If you are interested in becoming a Trustee of SSCVA, or would like to know more, please get in touch – we would be delighted to hear from you.

Can I also draw your attention to the current consultation around Staffordshire Libraries. You can feedback your views on the proposed changes by a variety of means. If you need help in making your views known, please get in touch.

Libraries that could be particularly affected in South Staffordshire are those in Brewood, Cheslyn Hay, Great Wyrley, Kinver and Penkridge (to be known as “Library Locals”).It is also proposed that community organisations will have the opportunity to manage these Libraries in the future.

There are consultation events at all 8 Libraries starting on 13th August.

We are also jointly sponsoring a further Community Volunteer Award as part of the District Council’s 40

th Anniversary celebrations – see opposite. If you need help or

advice with the nomination process, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help. Finally, we are extremely grateful to everybody who attended the Celebration Event on 21

st June, hosted by local MP Gavin Williamson. There was a huge turnout for what

proved to be a very enjoyable event at which we recognised the contribution of some very special people to their local communities.

With all best wishes for the summer – let’s hope the sun continues to shine!

New Innovation in Waste Prevention Fund Launches - England

Defra and WRAP have launched a new £800,000 fund for community partnerships with innovative projects to prevent waste in their community.

Funded by Defra as part of their Waste Prevention Programme for England, the new fund is calling on local charities, voluntary groups, businesses and councils to join together to prevent waste in their community.

WRAP Project Manager Jude Andrews said:

“By working together on a local level people can really make an impact on what’s happening in their own community.

“Preventing waste is about finding ways to keep items in use longer and not generating as much waste in the first place. It’s about rethinking the way we do things – redesigning and remanufacturing the things we use – changing attitudes and changing behaviours about what we buy and what we throw away, but most of all, working together and thinking creatively to do something about it.”

Applications will be accepted from groups of two or more organisations, including local businesses, councils, charities and voluntary groups for grants between £5,000 and £50,000 to create innovative projects in waste prevention in England.

Match funding of at least 50% is required as the Fund will only provide up to 50% of the total project cost.

Projects must:

Be based in England Propose innovative ways to prevent waste in their community, or beyond Show a community benefit from the waste prevention activity Show that the proposed project cannot proceed without this funding Be able to spend the grant by December 2015

Projects must address at least one of the following waste prevention priorities: Food., textiles, Paper and board, Furniture and bulky material, Plastics, Electronic and electrical equipment, Construction and demolition and Healthcare & chemical.

Examples of projects that could be funded, but are not limited to, include:

Textile or electrical repair skills workshops run by local businesses and voluntary groups. Businesses working with local charities to prevent food waste by distributing surplus food to those who need it. Community groups and councils working with businesses to set up local sharing groups for electrical items, furniture, etc. Councils working with local companies to re-use and repair items that businesses no longer need. Businesses working with educational establishments to design products that result in less waste.

There will be three funding rounds over a two-year period.

The deadline for Round 1 applications is 1 September 2014 (5pm).

The People’s Postcode Trust Small Grants Programme exists to try to make the world a better place through short-term, project specific funding.

The Funding for the West Midlands opens from 7 July till 22 August 2014.

WHO CAN APPLY

People’s Postcode Trust provides funding opportunities to small organisations, community groups and charities in Scotland, England and Wales, through grants ranging from £500 - £20,000 Applicants that are not formally registered as a charity with Office of the Scottish

Charity Regulator / Charity Commission can apply for up to £2,000 in funding.

Applicants that are registered with OSCR / Charity Commission and can provide

a valid charity number can apply for up to £20,000 in funding.

All applicants must be able to provide proof they are a constituted organisation.

LENGTH OF PROJECT

Organisations can apply for up to £20,000 for a project that lasts for up to 12 months.

As a general guideline, the larger and longer your project the higher the amount it would be considered acceptable to request. The amount you request should be directly related to the strength of the long term outcomes of your project.

For instance, if you wish to run a project that lasts up to 12 months, will bring direct benefit to 200 beneficiaries across a significant area then it would be reasonable to request up to £20,000. Alternatively, if you intend to run a 3 month project that will bring direct benefit to a much smaller number of beneficiaries throughout a smaller area then it is highly unlikely that you would be successful in being awarded £20,000 for your project.

If your project involves delivering a programme of activities please use the following guidelines for setting the length of your project and the corresponding amount that you request:

Up to 3 months in length – Request up to £5,000

Up to 6 months in length – Request up to £10,000

Up to 12 months in length – Request up to £20,000

Timescales are not so relevant to projects that involve purchases of significant capital items such as minibuses or construction projects. However capital projects will still be assessed according to how important the need is, how substantial the long term outcomes are and how compelling and innovative the project idea is. Generally speaking the larger and more impressive your capital project is the higher the amount of funds it would be acceptable to request.

South Staffordshire Citizens Advice Bureau

Are you finding it a challenge to understand welfare reform and how it affects your benefits?

Are you having financial difficulties, struggling to make ends meet and finding yourself in debt?

Then South Staffordshire CAB can help!

The Citizens Advice Service is a registered charity and offers free, confidential and impartial advice on a wide range of enquiry areas including employment, benefits, debt, housing and consumer issues.

The service has a far reaching presence across South Staffordshire and holds open door advice surgeries in Wombourne, Kinver, Perton, Cheslyn Hay, Codsall and Penkridge. The mission of Citizens Advice is to ensure that individuals do not suffer through lack of knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, of the services available to them or through an inability to express their needs effectively.

What happens to you if you get sick or have an accident and are no longer able to work? How will you pay your rent, mortgage, Council Tax and other bills? What ben-efits are available to you? What rights do you have regarding your employment?

These are questions faced by many ordinary people, not elderly, disabled or in some other way disadvantaged but by people who are otherwise in control of their lives. Where do they turn for help?

Advice from the bureau is available from face to face open door sessions, telephone and on-line.

Need help involving young people in community activity?

Over the last couple of years Ros and Timon, as part of the CATALYST Project, have been involved in diverse projects that enable young people in South Staffordshire to be active participants. From young people organising and taking part in community events to intergenerational projects or community social action projects, we have seen a tremendous amount of community action through passionate young people. The resulting positive impact the projects have made in different villages or towns in South Staffordshire has been significant.

As well as the positive difference projects have made to communities, we have worked hard to show the difference the project has made to the young people who have been involved. We have captured the views and feelings the young people have before and after being involved in the projects, demonstrating the positive benefits this has on young people. Young people have reported that they have increased in confidence, gained skills, met new people and improved their wellbeing. Ultimately, the greatest success is that young people are more equipped and keen to get involved in future projects.

We would love to hear from you.

We can help you get community projects off the ground! Whether you need help turning the seeds of an idea into reality or if you need help with practical things to make sure your project is a success – we would love to help.

Pathway Project - Handbag Auction

The Pathway Project need handbags and accessories to help victims of domestic abuse. The auction takes place on Friday 26th September 2014 at Wade Street Church, Lichfield, to raise funds for the much needed funds for Pathway Project. Please can you help by donating a good quality used handbag that they can sell at the auction? You could give your old one, go to the sale and ‘bag’ yourself a new one! There will also be a raffle, accessories, scarves and jewellery on sale. If it’s hard to let go of a loved handbag imagine having to lose everything you possess. That’s the choice many women make to stay safe. To donate a bag please drop it into the Hope Centre, or call the number below for more options.

The Friends of Bilbrook is a local voluntary organisation which endeavours to enhance community life by improving the open spaces in Bilbrook. It is pleased to announce that an all year round sports provision will soon be available on Joey’s Lane playing fields in Bilbrook. This is thanks to a £46,057 grant from Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK. The Multi Use Games Area project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Recreation theme, will include complete resurfacing of the existing court which will be marked out for 3 sports. The installation of a new fenced area will have basketball posts, goal posts and cricket wickets. There will also be a picnic bench and a bike rack. Annette Lloyd spokesperson for the Friends of Bilbrook said:

“With the help of Biffa Award, Support Staffordshire, South Staffordshire Community Budget, South Staffordshire Housing Association and Bilbrook Parish Council, after 2 years hard work our vision will be realised. The Friends of Bilbrook will finally be able to install an all-weather, freely accessible sporting facility that the village can be proud of. We hope this will be a lasting legacy to support the health and wellbeing of future generations of the Bilbrook community.” A Bilbrook parent, Stuart Bailey said:

“Anti-social behaviour stems a lot from youths having nowhere to go or with nothing to do. Bringing something like a MUGA will bring interest and give the youth something to do and participate in, rather than hanging around local shops and street corners causing trouble.”

High Hopes Appeal

High Hopes is the name of a video starring members of High Flyers, all of whom have learning difficulties, that has now been released on Youtube. The three minute video features one of our members, Sara Gregory, giving a beautiful rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ , accompanied by talented guitarist Mike Hook who kindly volunteered his services free of charge. While this music plays we see images of other members at High Flyers. MP Gavin Williamson, and representatives from the council and other organisations, individuals and groups that have supported us in the past, joined us for the launch of our video and we even had a surprise visit from some super heroes (alias management from Wombourne Funerals dressed as Spider man, Captain America and Thor) as we released helium balloons for a competition. Our members loved our launch day and are really excited about being on YouTube. The video shows just what adults with learning difficulties can do, and is helping us to raise funds for a building, as people have the option of making a £2 donation if they wish. Also we have turned this endeavour into a learning opportunity as members are tracking where it has been viewed round the world! Please check out the video, that has been described as 'inspirational' and 'moving' at www.youtube.com/user/highflyersvideo
