Attended by more than 240 members and filmed by a camera crew visiting from Paris, the Park Slope Food Coop’s May 2010 General Meeting elected two new members for the Hearing Officers Commit- tee, discussed workslot makeups for shifts sched- uled when the Coop is closed and voted in favor of supporting a state-wide ban against hydraulic fracturing. The GM was ably and efficiently chaired by Dave Golland. First Things First During Open Forum, an opportunity for members to ask questions or make brief statements, Amber Chase wondered if the Coop, with more than 15,000 members, c o u l d n ’t reduce the work- slot commitment; she sug- gested six weeks between workslots. Mike Eakin responded for the General C o o rdinators. “I just want to point out that every member who joins requires some food to be moved, food to be checked out,” he observed. Dave Golland re m i n d e d Chase that she could put the item on the agenda of a f u t u re GM and that workslot reduction was a discussion item as recently as the p revious month’s GM. Robin Smith, who presented a workslot discussion agenda item at the April GM, indi- cated she was interested in connecting with others who wanted to see a change in the workslot re q u i re m e n t . Smith would like to form a committee to further study the issue. Marina Ferr a ro, an FTOP worker, announced that the B71 bus, which curre n t l y goes right past the Coop, was scheduled for elimina- tion starting in June. She suggested that adding extra Coop walkers could help members affected by the MTA’s bus service cut. Open- ing more workslots to FTOP and other workers would be an additional benefit. General Coordinator Ann Herpel said that if the can- cellation of the bus service ends up having an impact on members, the Coop will look into adding more FTOP workers. Herpel also s t ressed that summer and early November thro u g h New Ye a r’s off e red more o p p o rtunities for a variety of FTOP slots. She counseled FTOP-ers to call the Coop office regularly for workslot updates and availability. When it comes to fava beans or golden beets, ramps or per- fectly ripe apples, the Coop is abundant with locally produced items found in nearly every aisle…. I’m not only referring to the near- p e rfect produce, but also the free-range pork, lamb and chicken from several upstate farms, and the selec- tion of cheeses from Sprout Creek Farm, as well as the freshly baked bread from Amy’s Bakery in Manhattan. And then there’s the scrumptious Crispy Kale Chips made in a solar-powered warehouse in Crown Heights by another Amy (Hamberry). And since I am taking the definition of “local” to a new stratosphere, why not add one more indulgence to that list: chocolate. Connie Banez has the enviable position of “chocolate buyer” at the Coop. She takes suggestions from shoppers—another perk of membership—and does her best to get the coveted products in the store. Coop Sales Up, Mortgage Paid Off

The GM moved on to theC o o rdinators’ Reports, andMike Eakin gave the Coop’sfinancial re p o rt . Eakinreminded the meeting thatall numbers are pre l i m i n a ryuntil the audit is completefor the Annual Meeting,scheduled for Tu e s d a y, June 29th.

Our gross margin, “thepennies out of every dollarthat we get to keep,” asdescribed by Eakin, is a lit-tle over 17%. He felt thatending the year with a gro s sm a rgin close to this figurewould be good. The 17 %g ross margin contrastsquite favorably with a typi-cal large food coop’s —38%—achieved partially bya much higher markup thanthe Coop’s 21%. Accord i n gto Eakin, the Coop’s lowmarkup has saved membersso far this year “maybe 3.3million dollars.”

Our mortgage balance isz e ro , compared to morethan $600,000 in April 2009.The Coop has been fre ef rom its mortgage obliga-tion since December 2009.

Late April 2010 brought aheadcount of 15,909 mem-bers. With the MembershipO ffice undergoing re n o v a-tions, new member orienta-tions have been temporarilysuspended and will be

“ for several more weeks,”a c c o rding to Eakin. Evenwith a new member fre e z e ,we are turning our inventory70 times a year, which Eakincontrasted with a typicall a rge coop’s inventory of “fif-teen times a year.” Our aver-age sales per week are up7.59% over the same periodin April 2009.

The other coord i n a t o r’sre p o rt was given by ElinoarA s t r i n k s k y, who inform e dthe GM that the Coop’srefrigerated cases wereu n d e rgoing a deep clean-ing, and she apologized i f any members were in-convenienced while theyshopped. Her hope is thatthe cooling system’s eff i-c iency would impro v e .Astrinksky said the annualdeep cleanse also “gave usthe chance to tighten upsome shelves, so we cani n t roduce more product.”

On to the Agenda ItemsThe evening’s first agenda

item was electing two newmembers to the Coop’s Hear-ing Officers Committee, acommittee whose membersact somewhat like judges inthe Coop’s disciplinary struc-t u re. Committee membersLiam Malanaphy and MarianHertz presented the item. Thehearing officer candidates,Margareth Garnier Simon, anadministrative law judge forthe Department of Educa-tion, and Danielle Sucher, ana t t o rney specializing in

family law and litigation,w e re overwhelmingly electedthrough a paper ballot.

Workslot ObligationWhen the PSFC Is Closed

The evening’s seconditem, one for discussiono n l y, was submitted by 2 0 - y e a r-member EdwardF o n d i l l e r. On the rare occa-sions that the Coop isclosed, members who wouldn o rmally work are obliged tocomplete a makeup, andFondiller would like to seethe rule changed. Althoughhis proposal said that whenthe Coop was closed, nomember should need to do amakeup, he fine-tuned hisidea during his pre s e n t a t i o nto the GM: “I propose thatmembers only be given oneout-of-shift card a year. Evenif the Coop closes twice,t h ree, four times on yourd a y, you only get one.”

Fondiller was dire c t l ya ffected by the rule late lasty e a r. As an early-morn i n greceiving squad member, hegot a letter from the Coop inmid-December detailing themakeup rule. Since his work-slot fell on New Ye a r’s, theCoop would be closed duringhis 5:30 a.m. shift, and hewould have to do a makeupshift. He described his re a c-tion as “outraged,” althoughhe did ultimately completehis makeup by attending hisfirst General Meeting.Fondiller highlighted the factthat the Coop is closed forp a rt of the day only a fewtimes a year.

Doug Hinnant summed upthe opinion of a number of GM attendees who felt that Fondiller’s ideaseemed reasonable. Exclud-ing annual inventory asalways falling on a Sundayand Thanksgiving always onT h u r s d a y, Hinnant re m a r k e d ,“The other days are totallyrandom; that would not beu n f a i r. By dumb luck, yournumber would come up.”

On the other hand, Audre yMiller Komaro ff commentedthat in her 30-plus years as a member, “Never did I say‘give me a free card.’ Never. ”Dehlia Hannah, an off i c eworker for several yearsb e f o re becoming FTOP, felt keeping track of eachm e m b e r’s get-out-of-workc a rd would be an “absoluten i g h t m a re,” and while shepersonally liked the idea ofless work, she thought “over-all, the work re q u i re m e n t —what it enables us to do as a store—is very positive, and we shouldn’t be lookingfor ways to cut down on our shifts.”

General Coordinator JoeHoltz off e red a point of clar-ification about how manydays the Coop is part i a l l yclosed: seven times a year(New Ye a r ’s Eve and Day,y e a r-end inventory, JulyF o u rth, Thanksgiving, andChristmas Eve and Day) .A c c o rding to Holtz, a mem-ber could be “scheduled forThanksgiving and Christ-mas or Thanksgiving andChristmas Eve, to nametwo. It just depends on they e a r. You could easily havetwo in one year.”

General Coordinator Ann Herpel said that if the

Ann Herpel also pointedout that many members whowork on one of the Coop’sp a rtial closure days wouldnever get a break from theirworkslots, since they work a shift during the part of theday when the Coop is open.Both Holtz and Herpel werec o n c e rned that the Coop’stenet of fairness would be in conflict with a policy of nowork makeup if the Coop is closed.

After a few more com-ments, Dave Golland re m i n d-ed the GM that the discussionwas running longer thanscheduled, and a vote wastaken to extend the discussionby 10 minutes; a show ofhands voted it down.

United AgainstFracturing

The last of the evening’sagenda business was an up or down vote for the Coopto support a state-wide NewYork ban against hydraulicfracturing. The item was p resented by Alice JoyceAlcala and the Enviro n m e n-tal Committee.

Fracturing, also known as“fracking,” is a technique inwhich water and often chemi-cals are pumped into a wellto free up natural gas lockedinto underg round geologicalf e a t u res. Some wells aredrilled as deep as 13,000 feet, according to Alcala’s pre s e n t a t i o n .Branching off from the mainwells are pipes that reach asfar as 2,000 feet horizontally.

But as the Gulf of Mexicooil disaster underscores, gasand petroleum capture holdsinherent risks to humans andto a re g i o n ’s enviro n m e n t ,and fracking does too.According to Alcala, “Despiteindustry claims that the tech-nology of hydraulic fracturingis safe, in the thirt y - o n estates that have implement-ed this technology, frackinghas been linked to groundwa-ter contamination, explo-sions, poisoned wells, airpollution, enviro n m e n t a ldegradation, cancer, death oflivestock and earthquakes.”

the [drilled] well, not in anystate in the United States.’ ”

Most conspicuously atstake in New York is an under-g round natural gas re s e rve inthe southern and westernp a rts of the state, a naturalgas field known as the Marc e l-lus Shale, which extends asfar south and west as south-w e s t e rn Vi rginia. This naturalgas-rich region is an area thathas attracted as much inter-est from overseas-based com-panies as it has from U.S.e n e rgy firms, according toAlcala. Up to this point, NewYork has not allowed frackingin the Marcellus tract, butt h e re is no ban in place ande n v i ronmental impact studiesa re still ongoing.

At risk are gro u n d w a t e rand watersheds, which maybecome polluted by the mate-rial pumped into the wells. Ifthis were to happen, NewYork State water supplies andf a rming land and New Yo r kCity water supplies could bec o m p romised. Even if are a sw e re restricted from frackingwith the intention of pro t e c t-ing watersheds and watersupplies, as Alcala pointedout, “Nobody knows how thewater moves underg ro u n d .Nobody knows exactly how tokeep certain chemicals out ofthe watershed. How do youseparate water in a sponge?You can’t. Water flows.”

A c c o rding to Alcala’s pre-sentation, another risk to thewater supply occurs when theradioactive shale is broken upduring fracking, and “radioac-tive contaminated water isb rought back up to the sur-face,” along with water fouledby fracking chemicals. Shesummed up this risk: “Therea re no facilities that can tre a tthe vast amounts of water thatrise to the surface. The indus-t ry has re s o rted to storing it inplastic-lined pits. When itrains, the water often risesabove the surface of the pitsand seeps into the gro u n d ,along with all the chemicalsand radioactivity that haveleached into the water duringthe process [of fracking].”

Alcala pointed to the work of Dr. Theo Colborn of theEndocrine Disruption Ex-change, which indicates thathuman fetal developmentcould be impaired from ele-ments in fracking fluids.Nobody knows exactly whatchemicals the fluids contain.As Alcala described the situ-ation, “The industry has pro-p r i e t a ry leases with thesefracking fluids that they willnot reveal to the public. Theyclaim that it would hurt theirp rofits because other com-panies would steal their pri-

vate recipe.” After Alcala’s pre s e n t a t i o n

to the GM, most membersspoke in favor of supporting afracking ban in New Yo r kState, although there was aquestion about what theC o o p ’s endorsement of theban would entail. Speakingfor the Environmental Com-mittee, Cynthia Blayer clari-

fied the Coop’s obligation ass u p p o rting a petition to banfracking in New York State.A c c o rding to Blayer, whilemany New York politicianssupport a ban, Governor Pat-terson currently does not.

The fracking ban agendaitem was put in front of theGM for a show-of-hands vote,and the GM voted over-

whelmingly in favor of thePark Slope Food Coop sup-porting the petition.

Rounding out the GeneralMeeting was ElizabethTo b i e r’s query for corre c t i o n sto the March and April GMminutes; there were none.The PSFC Board then voted toaccept the actions and deci-sions of the May GM. ■

I stumbled upon this dis-c o v e ry almost two years ago.It was a classic Coop story: Ihad a dozen items and bothlines were long. I joined thequeue at the “specialty food”corner and considered a bot-tle of hand-pressed pistachiooil, as well as membrillo, thatyummy fig paste wrapped inb rown paper and tied withtwine. I have found that ittakes great will power to shopat the Coop, and on this par-ticular day, I remained stead-fast—that was, until I spottedthe stacks of slim chocolatebars wrapped in hand-print-ed paper, one with a red her-ringbone pattern, anotherwith a sailor motif of blueanchors against a cre a mbackground. Gorgeous gifts, Ithought.

I was now three peopleaway from checking out, butcould not resist grabbing oneo ff the shelf. The label re a dMAST CHOCOLATE BROTH-ERS in sans serif block print,which floated above a child-like rendering of what lookedlike a jester’s hat. Beneaththat, the provenance: Bro o k-lyn. I was stunned. NotSwitzerland? Or Belgium?But Brooklyn?

I flipped over the bar andwas further impressed: theingredients for this particularbar boasted 70% cocoa, canes u g a r, almonds, sea salt andolive oil. The process wasalso inscribed: “Hand craftedlocally with organic cocoas o u rced from farms in theDominican Republic. Roast-ed in small batches. Refined

using granite stone andaged.” Following “date ofb i rth” someone had hand-written in the day on whichthe bar was crafted. And thenI saw the price: $5.57. While itseemed steep for a bar ofchocolate, I decided tosplurge to see if it was indeedworth it.

It was. Thus began myobsession with Mast Choco-late. Dear friends get smallstacks as birthday pre s e n t s ,guests are off e red bro k e npieces with a bowl full ofb e rries as dessert and it is ar a re evening in our housethat does not end with atleast one square. My hus-band likes the almond andsea salt best, whereas I havea hard time choosingbetween that and the roastedpecans and maple syrup. Ourlatest purchase, yet to beopened, is dark chocolatewith roasted hazelnuts—anew offering that I am surewill be elbowing the others inthe favorite competition.

As I wrote to Rick Mast andMichael Mast, brothers aswell as the company’sfounders and chocolate mak-ers, “I used to think Lindtchocolate was as good as itgets….” Thanks to them, I ama chocolate snob. But afterl e a rning more about theirp rocess, it is an elitism I canlive with. Mast Brothers, itt u rns out, is the only “beans-to-bar” chocolate maker inNew York City. That meansthey roast the cocoa beans—which they pro c u re fro msmall farms in Madagascar,the Dominican Republic andEcuador—at their Wi l l i a m s-

b u rg-based “factory” beforehand crafting each bar indi-v i d u a l l y. Thatis because their chocolate ise n t i rely pro d u c e d — f ro mcacao pod to elegant packag-ing— in Madagascar, anisland off the Southeasterncoast of Africa. While I knowthis is not “local,” not evenclose to the “500-mile” radiusthe Coop uses to define thet e rm, the social entre p re-neurism here makes up forthe trans-Atlantic shipping.“ With fair trade, you get thecacao beans from the sourc eand then produce the choco-late here,” explains Joe Salva-t o re, Madecasse’s Director ofMarketing. “With direct trade,you buy straight from thes o u rce. But here at Made-casse, we take it even a stepf u rt h e r. ”

This chocolate companywas founded by Brett Beachand Tim McCollum in 2006,based on their shared experi-ence as Peace Corps volun-teers in Madagascar, one ofthe world’s leading cacaop roducers, though sadly bet-ter known for its political tur-

moil and povert y. “We arehoping to change that,” Sal-vatore says.

One bite of their sea saltand nibs bar and you willa g ree they might succeed—i t ’s an intense mix of saltyand sweet that lingers on thetongue. The taste is excitingand energizing, as is theethos on which the companyis built. “We buy cacao fro mm o re than 30 farmers inMadagascar and work with aself-taught chocolate makerbased in the capital Antanari-vo,” says Salvatore, who alsodid a Peace Corps stint in thec o u n t ry. As a result, peoplewho work with Madecassee a rn four times what theywould in a fair trade agre e-ment. “Cacao is a huge indus-try in this country and we seeit as a way out of poverty forthe local people,” Salvatoreexplains. “We actually see theimpact it has had on the vil-lages we work with.”

And then thereis Fine and Raw, which per-haps gives the best reason toindulge: “Our chocolate isactually good for your health,”says Georgie Castle, who hasworked full time with theWi l l i a m s b u rg-based companysince December 2009.

Blockade Of Gaza: Israel Imprisons 1.5 million Palestinians

S t a rting June 2007, followingHamas’ takeover of Gaza, Israelimposed a tight blockade re s t r i c t i n gi m p o rts and exports, and contro l l i n gthe supply of electricity, heating oiland fuel. Israel’s objective of the siegeof Gaza is to weaken the Gazaeconomy and undermine the supportfor Hamas. This siege constitutes col-lective punishment of the civilianpopulation, which is specificallyb a rred under Article 33 of the Fourt hGeneva Convention.

Qassam Rockets Not a Physical ThreatIn response to the economic

blockade Hamas continued tolaunch Qassam rockets on areas ofIsrael bordering Gaza. In 2006,Israeli Ministry of Defense describedQassams as “more psychologicalthan a physical threat.” From 9/2005to 11/2009, 11 Israelis were killed.The number of rockets fired: 2005—100 monthly, 2006—149 monthly,2007—111 monthly. June 2008,Hamas and Israel had six-monthc e a s e f i re. Hamas rockets ceased;Israel maintained the blockade. InN o v e m b e r, Israel broke the ceasefirekilling seven Palestinians.

Israel launched the unprecedentedm a s s a c re of Gaza: Operation CastLead from 12/27/08 until 1/18/09,killing 1,384 Palestinians (762 civil-ians) and wounding thousands. Call to Conscience: Support BDS Movement Against Israel

On May 31, 2010, eight-ship Fre e-dom Flotilla with more than 700unarmed activists from over 40 coun-tries, bringing humanitarian suppliesinto Gaza, was attacked by Israelif o rces in international waters, killingnine people. Quoting Richard Falk:“It’s only the peoples of the world thatrepresent the conscience of humanityin a circumstance of this kind. Thebest hope for Palestinians is thro u g hthe boycott, divestment and sanc-tions campaign that was so successfulin South Africa.”

Healthy Discoursevs. Racism

DEAR EDITOR,I’m very disturbed by the re c e n t

letter “Book List for Gaza Should BeRethought,” re g a rding the books forGaza—Right to Read campaign.Much of what was said was blatantlyracist towards Arabs & Muslims—Palestinians in part i c u l a r. In theguise of trying to re d i rect blame forthe siege on the people of Gaza, thewriter paints Arabs as illiterates,underlining his point by stating thatfew books are translated into Arabic.If the equivalent was printed, slan-dering Jewish people, there wouldrightly be an upro a r. In our hungerfor oil, there is a strange quiescencein this society when it comes to anti-Arab/Muslim bigotry.

Hearing someone so smugly point-ing at illiteracy in the Middle Eastonly re i n f o rces the image that theIsraeli government and its supporterspossess the mentality of Euro p e a ncolonizers taming the “ignorant sav-ages.” This is exactly the kind of men-tality that prevailed amongstAfrikaners during Apartheid in SouthAfrica. This mentality is at the root ofwhy everyone from Arab Israelis toEthiopian and Mizrahi Jews have beensubjected to horrible discriminationwithin Israel. Discrimination in theWest Bank and Gaza has a much moresevere nature, often embodied in thef o rm of Israel Defense Forces (IDF)snipers shooting children for thecrime of throwing rocks at occupyingtanks. Racism does have its nuances.

That it is more likely that white phos-p h o rus, rather than books or food,will be delivered to Gaza is an espe-cially telling fact.

That the author of this letter usesM a rtin Luther King, Jr. as a means topaint any criticism of the Israeli Gov-e rnment as Anti-Semitic is all them o re horrendous given his ownseething prejudices. The “Disagre ewith me and you’re an Anti-Semite!”c a rd is a McCarthyite subterfuge that islosing its sting, thankfully. Zionism isnot Judaism. Supporting the Palestini-ans’ right to exist is not Anti-Semitic.

It is one thing for people to expresstheir opinions in the G a z e t t e , i t ’sanother to allow barely disguisedracism to permeate a legitimatedebate on whether or not to boycottIsraeli products at the Coop.

Within the letter “Stop the PoliticalVenom,” we get a strong opinion sup-portive of the Israeli government, fullof right-wing talking points (all morethan debatable), while the authorsimultaneously states that the Gazetteshould, in effect, ban all political dis-course. What this shows is someonewho would like to ban opinions thatd i s a g ree with his own. This is com-pletely unacceptable and should beexposed for what it is—censorship.

Censorship, like racism, is what ist ruly intolerable. I believe that theCoop deserves to have a full exchangeof differing viewpoints re g a rding theconflict between Palestine and Israel,without venomous racism and with-out censorship. A healthy, eye-to-eyedebate based on respect and fre ethought, would be true to the spirit ofcooperation and mutual aid that thisCoop is meant to embody.

the May 20th Gazette. AT character-izes the debate over support of Boy-cott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS)of Israel as “bitter political encounter”and “venom and guile.” He wouldrather “cease printing political opin-ion” as it may “foment distrust andf e a r.” He says, “It is offensive to me,and I ask that it stop.”

I am glad he decided, against hisown advice, to participate in thedebate. Debate is not a privilege in ademocracy, it is a responsibility. If weargue, we don’t kill each other. Lengthof letters is uniform: 500 words. Allletters are printed. You can write too.

The Hope of Obama has been dis-appointed. In Honduras the adminis-tration did not denounce the militarycoup one year ago that resulted indeath squad murders and policedetention of teachers, journalists andunion organizers. They sent soldiersto Haiti. Healthcare continues chaot-ic, and they will only give federalmoney to states which replace a pub-lic school system with privatized non-union charter schools, AND continuelicensing off - s h o re drilling even afteran explosion left a hole at the bottomof the Gulf gushing oil, killing the sea.I hold my head and weep.

US government policies protect thef o rtunes and influence of those whopay because they own and managemultinational corporations. The Coopis an institution outside of that sys-tem where we can debate and then actas a group. We can refuse to sell, aswell as refuse to buy, products madein a rogue state. Inevitably, we mustface the really inconvenient tru t h —the corruption of state power and ter-rible suffering caused by violenceperpetrated by the US government inour name. I believe that we also mustfind and support honest and indepen-dent leaders experienced in popularsocial change movements willing top resent themselves as candidatesoutside of the traditional twop a rty/factions of the capitalist votoc-r a c y. Consider: Open debate, Collec-tive action, Claim state power.

Our Governing Structure F rom our inception in 1973 to the present, the openmonthly General Meetings have been at the center of theCoop’s decision-making process. Since the Coop incor-porated in 1977, we have been legally required to have aBoard of Directors. The Coop continued the tradition ofGeneral Meetings by requiring the Board to have openmeetings and to receive the advice of the members atGeneral Meetings. The Board of Directors, which isre q u i red to act legally and re s p o n s i b l y, has appro v e dalmost every General Meeting decision at the end ofe v e ry General Meeting. Attend a GMand Receive Work Credit

Since the Coop’s inception in 1973, the G e n e r a lMeeting has been our decision-making b o d y. At theGeneral Meeting (GM) members gather to makedecisions and set Coop policy. The General-Meeting-for-w o r k s l o t - c redit program was created to incre a s eparticipation in the Coop’s decision-making process.

Following is an outline of the program. For full details, seethe instruction sheets by the sign-up board .

• Advance Sign-up required:To be eligible for workslot credit, you must add your

name to the sign-up sheet in the elevator lobby. The sign-ups sheet is available all month long, except for the day ofthe meeting when you have until 5 p.m. to sign up. On theday of the meeting, the sign-up sheet is kept in theMembership Off i c e .

Some restrictions to this program do apply. Please seebelow for details.

• Two GM attendance credits per year:Each member may take advantage of the GM-for-

workslot-credit program two times per calendar year.

• Certain Squads not eligible:Eligible: Shopping, Receiving/ Stocking, Food

Processing, Office, Maintenance, Inventory, Construction,and FTOP committees. (Some Committees are omittedbecause covering absent members is too difficult.)

Food Drive to Benefit

CHIPS Soup KitchenCHIPS Soup Kitchen, located at 4th Avenue and Sackett Street, is the recipient of

much of our edible but unsaleable perishable food. They also need donations of non-

perishable foods. This food will go to CHIPS to help them feed people in the neighbor-

hood who are in need of a nutritious meal. Consider contributing nonperishable foods

and commercially packaged foods; canned fish; canned fruits and vegetables; pasta

sauce; pasta; pre-packaged rice; pre-packaged beans; canned beans; canned soups;

Parmalat milk; dry milk; peanut butter; cooking oil; or boxed raisins. Give donations to

the collection table outside the Coop.

Safe Food Committee Film Night:

The Grapes of Wr a t hThe Grapes of Wrath is the classic adaptation of John

Steinbeck’s 1940 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. The plight of

the Joad family is universalized as a microcosm of the thou-

sands of tenant farmers who suffered from oppression imposed

by the banks and big mechanized farm interests. The dispos-

sessed migrant family’s departure from their windy and dusty

land and their slow disintegration provides insight into the thousands of families who

were evicted and uprooted from their “Dust Bowl” farmland and forced to search west-

ward in inhospitable California for jobs and survival.

What Is A Doula?

If you’re pregnant, chances are you’ve heard of doulas…but you may not be sure what

the fuss is all about. Doulas are childbirth professionals trained to support women dur-

ing the emotional ups and downs of this important period. This workshop will discuss

the differences between labor and postpartum doulas, answer common questions about

the doula’s role and provide tips on finding a doula. Presented by Coop members Lily

Dalke, CD (DONA), and Julia Willis, a DONA-trained doula.

Bring your child’s outgrown clothes to the Coop to trade with other members. Please

bring only items that are in good condition. Collect clothes for your own children, only.

At 12:15, any remaining clothes will then be available to anyone. Attention moms-to-

movies? Bring your old books, CDs, DVDs and videos to the

Every Sunday through November 21, from3:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Coop members can

leave their bikes with our valet parking service, which is like
