What was it?
Law passed by the Untied States Congress on September 18, 1850
Part of the Compromise of1850 Between the Southern states and
Northern states It stated that all runaway slaves
would be returned to their owners
Effects on the North
They had to choose to stick up for what they believed in and what the law stated
There was server consciences for slaves and the people helping them if gotten caught
Yet, northerners still smuggled slaves to Canada where they could be free
Effects on the South
So many People were disobeying the law, the Supreme Court had to deal with many cases and sentencing
The authorities can not keep up with catching the escaping slaves and plans
Less slaves would attempt to escape
Opinions/reactions of the North Felt anger against the government
and people owning slaves This law just made each person a
little more determined They wouldn’t give up, it was just a
bump in the road that they would get around
Opinions/reactions of the South Felt power Almost as if they already own the
whole feud or war Most told the slaves that they can
run, but when they return things would be much worse
How did this start the war? People kept on refusing the law more
and more So many people attempted to fight it
and others tried to enforce it The law was broken so many times Fueled the fire This just separated the sides even
more
