It is an open source design by Alon Meron commissioned for the Maker Library Network. The shelving system (see p.5) is an essential requirement for each Maker Library. There are other designs such as seating and display furniture but these are optional. This is a kit of parts to help you construct your Maker Library. It is an open source design by Alon Meron commissioned for the Maker Library Network. The shelving system (see p.5) is an essential requirement for each Maker Library. There are other designs such as seating and display furniture but these are optional. We encourage each Maker Library to put their own individual stamp on the other elements, including the gallery and furniture in their space, although do feel free to use these designs if you wish.

The Maker Library Network is a new initiative that promotes collaboration and knowledge-sharing between designers and makers in the UK and South Africa. Commissioned as part of Connect ZA and supported by the British Council, the Maker Library Network was created by Daniel Charny and developed with From Now On.

Maker Libraries are creative spaces that combine reading, showing and making. They are defined by three elements: a library, a makespace and a gallery. Librarians in each country are able to share and adapt the MLN principles for their local conditions and location; whether in their studio, in the corner of a cafe, or in a purpose built vehicle. Each Maker Library can connect over an online platform which also provides access to designs and mentoring resources.

MUST HAVE!A MAKER LIBRARY

The Maker Library bookshelves (see pp.4-8)

The Maker Library Network explainer as a poster or flyer (PDF included)

The Maker Library Network (MLN) is a British Counci l project commissioned as pa rt of Connect ZA, a programme running throughout 2014 & 15 which aims to create connections between young creativ es and audiences in the UK and South Africa. Conceiv ed by Daniel Char ny and developed with F rom Now On, th e MLN is a new initiati ve that promotes collaboration an d knowledge-sharing between designers and ma kers. The programme will culminate with an event to showcas e the achievements of the first y ear, with the ambition to expand into a world-wide network .

The peopleEach Maker Librar y is led by a librarian who is interest ed in fostering creativ e, social thinking and learning throug h making. Each libra ry will run a dynamic programme o f activities which is in formed by the librarian’ s interests. A s an acti ve member of the MLN community, the librari an has an opportunity to connect, learn and contribut e with li ke-minded people. Members of the MLN will als o have access to a pool of mentors who will be sharin g knowledge and resources via the online plat form.

The SpacesMaker Libraries are workspaces defined by three key elements: a library, a mak espace and a gallery. Librarians in each count ry will be able to share and adapt the ML N principles f or their local conditions and location; whethe r in their studio, in the corner of a ca fe, or in a purpose bui lt travelling vehicle.

The ConceptMaker Libraries are creat ive spaces that combi ne reading, showing and making. This new type of libra ry, whilst encouraging local d evelopment, is also pa rt of a new international mentoring network .

When a Ma ker Librar y (ML) is set up, the librari an receives a starter kit which includes a blueprint an d materials budget to build a library, a core set of books, a growing resource of open designs and access to a pan el of mentors via an online plat form.

NOTE 2:Where possible (once location is determined) glue all joints. This will make the structure more rigid and stable for the long term. *Gluing the joints in the 2d frames but not the connectors is a good compromise. It enables flat packing and reassembling and still provides added rigidity.
