Functions of the Nervous System
Is body system that manages bodily activity by sending and receiving signals between the brain, spinal chord and nerves
The central nervous system contains the brain and spinal cord
The peripheral nervous system is a network of nerves branching out to all parts of the body
PARTS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerves
The Brain
Mass of specialized nerve tissue Controls all physical functions, thoughts
and emotions Receives information about
events/conditions from nerves, sends instructions to body systems
Parts of the Brain
Cortex- outer layer, responsible for conscious thought
Cerebellum- small bulb at base of hemispheres, responsible for balance and body movement
Hindbrain- leading to spinal cord, responsible for breathing and basic bodily functions
many smaller subdevisions
Spinal Cord
Main communication line between brain and nerves
Runs down spine
Nerves
Carry messages back and forth between the brain and body tissue
Spread out in a network to all parts of the body
