A DOZEN CHORDS FOR THE BEGINNER

These are the most commonly used chords for many basic songs in the keys of C Major and G Major that you will encounter and need to learn.

E WHAT ARE CHORDS EXACTLY?

Every chord has certain notes in it which are part of a chord's formula from a musical scale. These notes are played together by strumming the ukulele's 4 strings at the same time and are usually made up of 4 notes, one from each string.

For the inquisitive, the formula for any major chord such as C (or C Major as it is more correctly known) is 1-3-5. If you write the ascending notes of the C Major scale starting with C, you get C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. Then by allocating them numbers, they become 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8. From the formulae below, the chord of C is 1-3-5-1 so it therefore becomes C-E-G-C.

NOTE: The "b" sign below is the sign for a "flattened" note which is a note from a standard scale that is lowered by half a tone to change the sound or feeling of that chord depending on the composer's intentions. So a C minor or Cm chord formula is 1-3-5b-1 and becomes C-Eb-G-C. Similarly a C seventh or C7 is 1-3-5-7b and therefore becomes C-E-G-Bb and a C minor seventh or Cm7 formula is 1-3b-5-7b and becomes C-Eb-G-Bb. This works the same for every key, not only C.
