Dear Friends,

As another Shul dinner approaches, we find ourselves with a familiar opportunity: to show our Hakoras HaTov.

All of us who are privileged to be part of the Ahavas Israel are beneficiaries of a warm and vibrant Makom Torah. And while the walls and pillars make this a Shul, the people make us a family. Perhaps no one epitomizes this more than tonight’s esteemed honorees.

All of them deserve our thanks for contributing to the success of our beloved Shul in their own special ways: Rabbi Ephraim and Rivki Slepoy as living embodiments of learning and service; Jeffrey and Goldie Zuckerman as exemplars of dependability and devotion; and Harlan Braude Z”L, whose quiet dignity and tireless dedication elevated the Ahavas during his lifetime—and continue to do so after his passing.

As we celebrate the valuable contributions of our honorees, we also dedicate ourselves to following their lead. May Hashem grant all of us the strength to do our part in building our Shul into a shining example of Hakoras HaTov!

Dear Friends,

We are all familiar with this famous quote from Parshas miyecw. And yet, this Mitzvah can be quite puzzling. How can I love my neighbor like myself? Surely there are some people in this world who we don’t see eye to eye with. People we don’t get along with. People who have wronged us. How can we possibly love every person like ourselves?

R’ Samson Raphael Hirsch provides an interesting take on this. The Mitzvah to “Love our Neighbor” is not meant in the singular. It is meant in the larger context of a community. Much like all the parts of a car work together to make the vehicle stop and go, so too all people in a community must play their part to ensure the growth and happiness of the greater group. So when the Pasuk says to love our neighbor, it means that in order for us to be happy and content, we need everyone to play their part. We need to love our friend, and all contribute to the greater Kehilla, so that we all may benefit as a whole.

Our honorees this year, Rabbi & Mrs. Ephraim and Rivki Slepoy and Mr. & Mrs. Jeff and Goldie Zuckerman, certainly embody this spirit of jenk jrxl zad`e. Be it through Torah or acts of cqg, they carry their load of supporting the Kehilla. But now it’s our part. We all must learn from this to step up and play our part. Contribute, volunteer, help out in any way you can. Everyone has a skill or talent that can contribute to our greater Kehilla. Together, we can bring this concept to life, and all enjoy a greater level of happiness.

Rabbi Ephraim and Rivki SlepoyGuests of Honor

The Slepoy family has made an indelible mark on the Ahavas from the time they arrived in Passaic. Originally from Brooklyn and Augusta, GA, respectively, Rabbi Slepoy and Rivki moved to town in 2003, having previously lived in Jersey City—as well as communities in Virginia, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. During their time in those communities, the Slepoys were privileged to Mekarev a number of families that are now Shomer Shabbos and Mitzvos. They are proud to have started several NCSY chapters and introduced many teenagers to Yiddishkeit.

That dedication to teaching has carried over to their lives in Passaic. With 17 years of experience as a shul Rav and equally extensive experience as a rebbe (currently at Sinai Schools), Rabbi Slepoy is universally respected for his knowledge—and his ability to convey that knowledge to his students. He is beloved by his talmidim for his infectious enthusiasm, humor, and kindness. Rivki is equally accomplished in the field of education, having worked as a teacher, Hebrew school principal, and kindergarten morah (currently at Yeshivat Noam in Paramus) for many years.

Rabbi Slepoy is a fixture at the Hashkama Minyan on Shabbos morning. He is especially helpful in assisting in the blowing of the shofar during Rosh Hashana.

Along with their five children, the Slepoys are shining examples of service and leadership for the entire Passaic-Clifton community. They truly deserve to be celebrated tonight.

Jeffrey and Goldie ZuckermanGuests of Honor

Jeffrey and Goldie Zuckerman have become part of the bedrock of the Ahavas during the 15 years they’ve been in Passaic. They arrived in 2004 after living for 13 years in the Bronx. At the time, they were seeking a frum environment in which to raise their children. While looking at different places in the area, Jeffrey stopped by the Ahavas to daven and say kaddish for his father. That is when he met Rabbi Eisenman, who asked him to daven for the Amud. From that very first visit, Jeffrey knew this was the town—and the shul—they had been looking for.

Originally from the Bronx, Jeffrey works as an accounts payable clerk, which requires exceptional attention to detail. He carries that exactness and dedication over to his service to the shul. For many years, Jeffrey has embraced the mitzvah of setting up Shalosh Seudas on Shabbos. Whenever called upon, he is more than willing to fill the role of gabbai at weekday minyanim, or daven Shacharis on Shabbos morning. He also loves being a member of the Not Ready for Chol Hamoed Players, who deliver memorable musical performances every Purim.

Goldie, who hails from Cape May, NJ, has also made her mark on the community as an educator. A former teacher at YBH, she currently teaches at Shalom Yeladim in Teaneck.

Jeffrey and Goldie, along with their five children, are truly indispensable members of the Ahavas family. We are proud to honor them tonight.
