September Wednesday, September 10 Sounds of the Elk! (Adult Naturalist Program) Join elk biologist Laine Stowell and a Museum Naturalist in calling for the bulls! Meet at 6:00 a.m. at the USFS Guard House in Clam Lake and travel to several locaons to hear elk bugling, returning by 9:00 a.m. Dress for the weather and be prepared to walk a significant distance over uneven terrain in low light condions. Space is limited. Register by noon on Friday, September 9 and get direcons to the meeng place. Donaons accepted. Thursday, September 11 Work Day at the Forest Lodge Nature Trail Come help maintain one of our favorite trails! USFS Trails Technicians will be on hand to provide guidance and tools as we cut brush and improve the trail’s tread. Bring work gloves, pruning shears, and dress for the weather. We’ll work from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a lunch break at the trailhead in between. Come for one or both sessions. Bring your sandwich, and we’ll provide the sides and snacks. Please register by September 9, to help us plan. Saturday, September 13 Camp Fat Tire for Kids Are you busy with the races? Drop off your kids, grades K-6, for a fun -filled day of games, hiking, craſts and stories at the Museum. Early drop-off is available starng at 8:00 a.m. All children should arrive by 9:00 a.m. and must be picked up by 4:00 p.m. Please call if you need addional accommodaons. A simple lunch and snacks will be provided. Register by September 9. $75 member/$80 non-member. Saturday, September 13 Great Lakes Advanced Training at the Lake Superior Naonal Estuarine Research Reserve Announcing the first WI Master Naturalist designed and delivered advanced training course, with curriculum and oungs featuring the Great Lakes. This eight-hour course will fulfill a Master Naturalist's annual advanced training requirement. At this me, course enrollment is open to anyone and is not restricted to Master Naturalists. Cost is $50 for Master Naturalist Volunteers, $75 for other adults. For more info and to register by September 5, visit www.wimasternaturalist.org. Thursday, September 18 Hawk Ridge Field Trip (Adult Naturalist Program) One of nature's remarkable spectacles can be witnessed each fall in Duluth, MN. Migrating raptors, originating from summer

breeding areas as far north as the Arctic and with wintering destinations as far south as points in South America, concentrate in impressive numbers at the western tip of Lake Superior. Join us as we travel to the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory to watch one of the greatest migrations of birds of prey in North America. Meet at the Museum 10:00 a.m. and return around 4:00 p.m. Space is limited. Register by September 17. $10 member/$15 non-member. Saturday, September 20 Specimen Skull Preparation Workshop Museum Collections Manager, John Kudlas, will give a hands-on demonstration of what it takes to clean and prepare an animal skull for display. While you’ll be practicing on small mammals for the Museum’s collection, the techniques can be applied to making a European-style mount of your deer skull and antlers. 1:00-3:00 p.m. Register by September 18. $5 member/$10 non-member.

Tuesday, September 23 Dinner Lecture: Aflatoxins to Zombies: Weirdest Fungi of the World (Adult Naturalist Program)

Join Britt A. Bunyard, PhD, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of FUNGI magazine, to explore the weird world of mushrooms. Britt will share slides at 5:30 p.m. at Lakewoods Resort. You may also join him for a special dinner at Lakewoods and conversation after the presentation. Register by September 20, by calling 715-798-3890. $5 member/$10 non-member.

Wednesday, September 24 Mushroom Foray to the Juniper Rock Overlook (Adult Naturalist Program)

Join Britt A. Bunyard, PhD, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of FUNGI magazine, to explore the weird world of mushrooms. We’ll explore about 0.6 miles one-way along the North Country Trail looking for mushrooms, and then gather to identify them at the overlook. Bring a basket or paper bag for carrying your fungus. Meet at the Museum at 9:00 a.m., return by 1 p.m. Bring snacks and water. Register by September 23. $5 member/$10 non-member. Wednesday, September 24 Food, Friends, and FUN-raising at the Rivers Eatery When you come out to eat pizza, drink beer and listen to live music tonight, net proceeds will be donated to the Museum! 5:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27 Living Light Photo Contest Opening Reception

Join us to honor the memory of Seddie Cogswell and the winners of the photo contest between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Program at 1:30. Refreshments will be served.

October Wednesday, October 1 Pastels: Painting Pathways with Diana Randolph Explore pathways including trails, garden walks, driveways or roads in the landscape using your own photos as inspiration to create pastel paintings on paper. We’ll use dry pastel sticks, not oil pastels. We’ll focus on the art elements of space and shape. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Museum. Participants may bring a sack lunch, or lunch may be ordered in class from the Brick House Café. There is a supply list for this class. Building Bat Boxes Become a Superhero Conservation Sidekick by building your own

bat house! Bats make great neighbors, so you can encourage them to stick around your home (and not INSIDE your home). The workshop runs from 12:30-3:30 p.m. All materials and instruction are provided. Register by September 24. Space is limited. Cost is $5 member/$10 non-member per house. Special thanks to the C.D. Besadny Conservation Grant Program. Saturday, October 11 Leaf Animal Art Use the bounty of autumn leaves to create your own colorful critter. Laminate your creation and go home with a beautiful place mat for your table! All ages welcome. 10:30-11:30 a.m. $5 member/$10 non-member per family. Thursday, October 16 Moccasin Making Workshop Join John Kudlas and Vivianne Hanke to create your own moccasins out of buckskin. Use simple tools to cut, sew, shape, and decorate your beautiful and functional slippers. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult helper. Noon-3:00 p.m. Space is limited. Register by October 14. $15 member/$20 non-member per pair of moccasins. Saturday, October 18 Buckskin Pouch Workshop Join John Kudlas, Collections Monitor at the Museum, and learn how to make your own handy buckskin pouch. Students will learn how to select, cut, lace and finish a useful and attractive pouch. All tools and white-tailed deer buckskin will be provided. The class is open to all ages and abilities. 9:00 a.m.-noon. Register by October 17. $5 member/$10 non-member.

Thursday, October 23 Crex Meadows Birding Adventure (Adult Naturalist Program) Join avid birders Tom Matthiae and Skip Perkins for an afternoon at Crex Meadows wildlife area near Grantsburg, WI.

We'll spend a few hours in the afternoon exploring the marshes and brush prairies, looking for species such as trumpeter swans and rough-legged hawks. Towards dusk, we'll be able to see hundreds, if not thousands of sandhill cranes as they move into the refuge from surrounding areas to roost for the night. Stop for dinner in Siren at Adventures Restaurant & Pub on the way home. Meet at the Museum at 12:30 and return by 9:00 p.m. Register by October 21. $30 member/$35 non-member.

Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26 North American Loon Symposium At the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute Learn from North America’s premier experts

about loon behavior, lead toxicology, habitat management, citizen science and many other topics. A loon symposium of this size and scope has not taken place in North America in more than a decade. Saturday, October 25 Seed Art Workshop Use seeds of all shapes and sizes to create beautiful designs on a small trinket box. Thursday, October 30 Dinner Lecture: Happiness in Bhutan (Adult Naturalist Program)

Nestled in the Himalayas, the tiny, Buddhist country of Bhutan is known for its Gross National Happiness Index, which informs public policy, and is a model for sustainable practices nationwide. Jack and Mary Wichita will share insights and photos of this gorgeous, fascinating & friendly country, based on what they learned during the week they spent there in January, 2014. Saturday, November 1 Introduction to Geocaching Geocaching is the real-world treasure hunt that's happening right now, all around you. There are over 2 million active geocaches and over 6 million geocachers worldwide. Join Katie Connolly, Museum Naturalist and avid geocacher, in learning more about using GPS to hide and seek geocaches. Then we will hit the trail to find some local caches. We will meet at the Museum at 1:00 and return by 3:30 p.m. Register by October 30. $10 member/$15 non-member.

Saturday, November 8 Children's Nature Yoga In this class with Master Naturalist Jane Weber, families can explore nature through yoga. We will stand still and strong like mountains, get down with dogs, sway in the wind as trees, and experience many different animals through a variety of yoga poses. This is a very interactive, playful, and fun class. All ages and abilities are welcome. Jane Weber is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher and certified Children’s Yoga Teacher. She has been practicing yoga for 20 years and has been teaching yoga to adults and children for 2 years. Meet at the Museum from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Register by November 6. $10 member/$15 non-member per family.

Thursday, November 13 Dinner Lecture: Where have all the birds gone? (Adult Naturalist Program)

Many species of birds in the region are in decline, but many species are also increasing or maintaining stable populations. Gerald ‘Jerry’ Niemi, Professor, Department of Biology and Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota, Duluth, will summarize the population status of breeding birds with data gathered over more than 20 years in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. Meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Rookery Pub. You may also join Professor Niemi for dinner and conversation after the presentation. Register by November 12, by calling 715-798-3890. $5 member/$10 non-member. Saturday, November 15 Who’s LIVING at the Museum? Get up close and personal with the critters who live at the Museum! Join Master Naturalists Jayme and Carol to meet Digger, Emory, Scuba, and their friends. Fun and informative for curiosity seekers of all ages. Meet at the Museum from 10:30-11:30 a.m. $5 member/$7 non-member per family. Saturday, November 22 Rag Rug Workshop Scandinavian loop weaving is a simple and durable technique that uses no thread or looms, and turns trash into treasure! Bring old bed sheets or other fabric that can be easily torn into strips, and a pair of sharp scissors. Two or three sheets will make a 2’x4’ rug. Some extra materials will be on hand. The class runs from 10 a.m.-noon. Younger students are welcome with an adult helper. Previous students may attend for a refresher and fellowship while rugging. Register by November 21. $5 member/$7 non-member.

December Saturday, December 6 Natural Holiday Decorations (Food Shelf Benefit) Stop by the Museum between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to make your own natural or recycled holiday decorations. Crafty kids of all ages can appreciate celebrating the season the thrifty way! The cost is a $5 donation to the Food Shelf or a similar value of non-perishable food items.

Thursday, December 11 Dinner Lecture: Black Robes and the Medicine Wheel—Religion and a Clash of Cultures in Early Wisconsin History (Adult Naturalist Program)

David Saetre, campus minister for Northland College, will explore the engagement of European Christians with indigenous Native communities from the early fur trade through the mid-19th century treaties. From the missionary efforts of the Jesuits, to the later engagements of Franciscans and Protestants, that history informs our own efforts to understand and appreciate diverse worldviews and ways communities succeed or fail to learn from one another. Join us at 5:30 p.m. at the Rookery Pub. You may also join us for dinner and conversation after the presentation. Register by December 10, by calling 715-798-3890. $5 member/$10 non-member. Saturday, December 20 Christmas Bird Count Volunteers are needed to assist the National Audubon Society in an annual winter bird census. Participants record and count birds and bird species within 15-mile diameter circles in the Cable and Hayward area from dawn to dusk. Bird feeders within the circles are also surveyed, so feeder counters are also needed.
