3 Hong Kongs Recycling of Handset Accessories program launched to

encourage responsible disposal and environmental protection

Help save our planet. Act now! By 3 Hong Kong

    Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings

Limiteds (the Group; Stock Code: 215) 3 Hong Kong

mobile business has launched the Recycling of Handset

    Accessories corporate social responsibility program

since August 2012, to encourage everyone to help protect

the environment and make good use of Earths resources

by handing over unwanted handset accessories for recy-

cling, rather than to simply discard them as rubbish.

3 Hong Kong will place handset accessory recycling

boxes at more than 40 locations including certain

3Shops, 3Mobile Device Service Centres and the 3Ex-

perience Workshop all over Hong Kong to promote

responsible disposal of old phone accessories. These

items will be passed to green groups and other voluntary

organisations for recycling or reuse, building on the towns

    growing environmental awareness.

Jennifer Tan, HTHKHs Chief Financial Officer, said: As

one of the largest local mobile telecoms operators, 3 Hong

Kong is committed to introducing advanced smart devices

to the benefit of customers. A constant succession of top-

notch smart devices appearing on the market means

many mobile users are switching to newer models or

accessories, rendering their old gadgetry obsolete. We

are therefore delighted to launch the Recycling of Hand-

set Accessories initiative by placing collection boxes at

    our various public touch

    points and encouraging

    customers to hand in

    old accessories for re-

    cycling or reuse. Given

    the Groups extensive

    network of collection

    locations and large cus-

    tomer base, we believe

    this program will help

    motivate all walks of life

    to support environ-

    mental protection, make

    the best use of re-

    sources and observe

    responsible disposal of

    unwanted handset ac-

    cessories.

The programs main aim is to collect handset accessories,

such as batteries, chargers, headphones, earpieces, USB

cables and stylus pens, and pass them on a regular basis to

green groups and other voluntary organisations for recycling or

reuse among the needy. Help save our planet. Act now!

    By CITIC Telecom CPC

Gain more from SmartCLOUD and establish the perfect balance in business success. SmartCLOUD TAB (Traffic and Appli-

cation Balancer) is a revolutionary new way to achieve equilibrium in application performance and efficiency. Beyond just a

basic load balancer, SmartCLOUD TAB intelligently manages application execution across the highly robust SmartCLOUD

infrastructure to deliver superior service scalability, high availability, disaster recovery, application performance and customi-

    zation.

Historically, these benefits of a full-featured load balancing solution were only available with highly complex and expensive

infrastructure. Thanks to SmartCLOUD TAB, these powerful advantages are now immediately available via a Cloud-based

subscription to all enterprise customers demanding the ultimate in application performance and reliability.

Comprehensive Load Balancing Solution Optimizes Applications Performance and Reliability

SmartCLOUD TAB goes beyond the High Availability features

enjoyed by the reliable SmartCLOUD infrastructure, and opti-

mizes application-layer execution across distributed architec-

ture. LSLB optimizes execution across a server farm in the same

location, and GSLB optimizes service uptime across geographi-

cally separated servers. A full set of algorithms for each Load

Balancing mode allows perfect customization to needs.

    Local Server Load Balancing (LSLB)

Agile Applications To gain the best in application per-

formance, SmartCLOUD TAB intelligently manages appli-

cation execution among a set of servers in the same loca-

tion. This optimizes server load to deliver top responsive-

ness for such tasks as SSL offloading, content caching,

HTTP compression, ensuring e-commerce session persis-

    tence and more.

Optimum Bandwidth SmartCLOUD TAB makes band-

width utilization more efficient, and provides service level

  • Ericsson study: TV viewing increasingly accompanied by use of social media By Ericsson Limited

62 percent use social media while watching TV - an 18 percent point increase in one year

67 percent use tablets, smartphones or laptops for TV viewing

60 percent use on-demand services on a weekly basis

The results of Ericsson ConsumerLab's annual study - presented in the TV & Video Consumer Trend Report 2012 - reveal that

social TV is becoming a mass-market phenomenon.

Sixty-two percent of consumers use social media while watching TV on a weekly basis, an increase of 18 percentage points in

one year. By gender, 66 percent of women engage in this behavior, compared to 58 percent of men. Twenty-five percent of

consumers use social media to discuss what they are watching while they are watching it.

Figure: How often people discuss TV or video on social networks while viewing

Niklas Rnnblom, Ericsson ConsumerLab Senior Advisor,

says: "Mobile devices are an important part of the TV ex-

perience, as 67 percent of consumers use smartphones,

tablets, or laptops for TV and video viewing. Furthermore,

sixty percent of consumers say they use on-demand services

on a weekly basis. Watching TV on the move is growing in

popularity, and 50 percent of the time spent watching TV and

video on the smartphone, is done outside the home, where

mobile broadband connections are facilitating the increase."

Although viewing behaviors and demands are changing,

only 8 percent of consumers say they will reduce their TV

subscriptions in the future. In fact, instead of looking to cut

costs, consumers are willing to pay more for an enhanced

viewing experience: 41 percent of consumers say they are

willing to pay for TV and video content in HD.

More than half of consumers want to be able to choose their

own TV and video content. Rnnblom says: "As the number

of screens and services increase, people are eagerly looking

for an easy-to-use, aggregated service that can bring every-

thing together. It should allow consumers to mix on-demand

and linear TV including live content, facilitate content dis-

covery, leverage the value of social TV and provide seam-

    less access across devices."

Data was collected in Brazil, Chile, China, Germany, Italy,

Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK and the

US. In all, 14 qualitative and 12,000 quantitative online in-

terviews were conducted representing more than 460 million

    consumers.

Ericsson ConsumerLab gains its knowledge through a global

consumer research program based on interviews with

100,000 individuals each year, in more than 40 countries and

15 megacities - statistically representing the views of 1.1

billion people. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are

used, and hundreds of hours are spent with consumers from

    different cultures.

creating environmentally-friendly properties. It has been

taking steps to become more environmentally conscious

and supports green initiatives such as Earth Hour, Coastal

    Cleanup and paper recycling.

CHI Residences saw an increasing demand for conven-

ient, environmentally-friendly yet stylish accommodation in

Hong Kong. In addition, the organization is committed to

encouraging a greener lifestyle and had adopted a policy

aimed at eliminating unnecessary burden on the environ-

ment and reducing its carbon footprint wherever possible.

As a result, the brand wanted to find a way to provide

timely, efficient and paperless communications to residents, while continuing to provide quality services for business trav-

    elers and corporate tenants.

CHI Residences decided that a new state-of-the-art, tailor-

made internal communication solution was needed to offer

their tenants more digital options. Its current messaging

and communication system was not well-equipped to cope

with the growing technological demands, especially since

the various networks and communication platforms

    needed to be consolidated.

Faster and better communication tools also meant that CHI

Residences would be able to boost productivity and minimize

IT costs. It would also cement its reputation and position as an

industry leader in creating a luxury home away from home. In

addition, the company realized that there was much waste in

printing notices, reminders and charges for tenants and wanted

to reduce the amount of hard copies generated.

Since tenants at CHI Residences usually stay for six months to

a year, it was important for the communications solution pro-

vider to install the solution without causing disturbance to ten-

ants and ensure that operations continued to run smoothly.

After carefully considering their options, CHI Residences de-

cided to partner with Fujitsu to implement an end-to-end unified

communications solution for its serviced apartments in Sheung

Wan, Jordan and Yaumatei. A number of factors were taken into account in the selection process including functionality,

ease-of-use, security and privacy, compatibility with existing

systems and procedures, as well as price. Style and size of the

equipment were also considered as space within serviced

    apartments is valuable.

Collaborating closely with CHI Residences to develop a solu-

tion that met all their needs, Fujitsu deployed a complete IP-

based unified communications system called CHI Smart Com-

municator across four separate buildings in two months without

causing disturbance to tenants. To achieve this, professional

Fujitsu services teams were on hand to install the equipment in

each apartment quickly and smoothly. Once the system was in

place, Fujitsu provided ongoing training and support for all the

CHI team members involved to get to grips with the technology.

CHI Residences is the first serviced apartment brand to intro-

duce unified communications technology and provide tenants

with state-of-the-art digital features. These include hi-tech, eco

-friendly enhancements such as phone book and service di-

rectory, click to call, text messages and visualized voicemail.

All this is made convenient through the use of the in-room

plasma screens, wireless keyboard and mouse, and Internet

access. They can learn about the latest entertainment hap-

pening in Hong Kong, or find recommendations for nearby

restaurants which they can click-to-call for reservations, via the

    screens.

COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION OF HONG KONG Page 14

  • Continued Fujitsu Article

The platform can also be personalised with the names and

details of the tenants, making it easy to send notifications

and reminders on bill payments and messages, and to record specific information related to each apartment, such

as IDD calls. It has sped up communications and notifica-

tions between staff and the tenants.

Since installing CHI Smart Communicator, CHI Residences

has noted an 18% increase in tenant satisfaction. The solu-

tion has also reduced unnecessary printing of documents by

more than 10%, lowering costs while benefitting the envi-

    ronment.

In working with Fujitsu, CHI Residences became more

aware of the possibilities technology can offer within the

hospitality industry. Having just launched the CHI Benefits

Program, they are now looking to integrate the offers into the

CHI Smart Communicator, with e-banner advertising space

available for partners. The e-advertising would be relevant

to the needs of tenants and offer them more options and

discounts on restaurants, leisure and entertainment. At the

same time, CHI Residences would be able to transfer the

revenues from e-advertising to projects will enrich the hos-

    pitality experience for tenants.

Pilar Morais, CEO, CHI Residences concludes: As a lead-

ing serviced apartment brand in Hong Kong, we are always

seeking to partner with industry leaders, and Fujitsus ad-

vanced technology and tailor-made solutions are a good fit

to co-create a luxury home away from home for chic and

savvy travelers. Working with Fujitsu, our goal is to take

serviced accommodation to a new level.

  • From Product-Centric to Solutions-Centric Leveraging the Benefits of Carrier Ethernet

    By level 3 Communications

The communication services market is going through a trans-

formation with the emergence of Carrier Ethernet in the wide

area network (WAN) transport arena. Despite Ethernet finding

its way into WAN networks only in early 2004, it has quickly

become the technology of choice for enterprises. There are

many reasons for Ethernets strong demand, including but not

    limited to familiarity with the network protocol in LAN networks;

    support for granular bandwidth; lower cost per megabit (MB);

and most importantly, support for convergence of IP-based

applications. In general, traditional network services such as

ATM, Frame Relay, private line, SONET and native waves are

being replaced by next-generation strategic services such as

    Ethernet, due to these advantages.

Ethernet service configurations can be enabled over a multi-

tude of technologies, each of which has advantages and limi-

tations as described in the following table. These technology

options create an opportunity for service providers to evolve

    from a product-centric market strategy to a solutions-centric

marketing approach. Service providers around the globe are

facing significant margin pressures due to extreme competi-

tion in the pure transport services business, and a solutions-

centric approach delivers more customer value. As the trend

towards hybrid networks continues to grow, customers are

asking for similar types of control and visibility into network

and bandwidth performance on Ethernet networks.

Layer 2 carrier Ethernet in particular offers a platform for con-

verged business solutionsvoice, video and data services.

Converged network services enable enterprises to improve

operational efficiency by consolidating applications on a single

access circuit. The dynamic class of service (CoS) capability

enables traffic prioritization, allowing customers to run multiple

applications on a single network more cost-effectively. For

example, customers can prioritize voice traffic when using

VoIP applications by allocating more bandwidth to voice and

releasing it for data transport when not using VoIP. Also, cus-

tomers can use all their bandwidth for video when using a

    video-conference application.

Service providers can deliver additional value with their

Carrier Ethernet solutions in two ways-customer portals

and smart demarcation. While service providers have long

provided portal support for MPLS VPN services, it is only

recently that their portals have been extended to Ethernet

services. Overall, customer portals provide the following

    for Ethernet customers:

Service and Order Management: Enables customers to

view order status and manage (view, create, escalate,

    update and close) trouble tickets.

Standard and Custom reporting: Enables customers to

view, track and analyze network performance and usage

levels by using standard and custom reports.

Smart demarcation improves customers abilities to man-

age Ethernet networks efficiency and growth using a Net-

work Interface Device (NID) at the customer premises and

connected to the provider edge. The NID provides fault

management and end-to-end reporting on network per-

formance and SLAs that can be monitored via the cus-

tomer portal. This is particularly well-suited for customers

that run critical applications on their Ethernet network, and

expect SLAs on par with traditional private line or SONET

services. Smart demarcation also helps the service pro-

vider deliver on SLAs, as it helps localize faults, identify

affected services and take remedial actions.

Level 3s affiliation with Carrier Ethernet started in 2001 by

co-authoring the Martini draft, defining the architecture of

point-to-point layer 2 frames over MPLS networks. More

recently, Level 3 has led the industry through its global

deployment of Ethernet transport, its award winning

MyLevel3 customer portal, and including smart demarca-

tion with EVPL and VPLS services as a standard service

component. The company continues to leverage its high-

speed optical networks and IP network infrastructure to

deliver a broad set of Ethernet service offerings.

  • NTT Communications has started operation of Asia Submarine-cable Express

Offering Lowest Latency Network Service between Tokyo and Singapore

    By NTT Communications Corporation

NTT Communications Corporation , a global cloud services provider and wholly-owned subsidiary of NTT Group, announced

that it has started operation of the Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE), a 40-gigabit-per-second (Gbps), ultra-low latency

undersea cable connecting major cities in Asia from August 20. ASE will enhance NTT Communications highly reliable global

network services by boosting the capacity and strengthening the redundancy of its Asian cable networks.

ASE, which eventually will incorporate 100 Gbps optical technology, will launch with a total carrying capacity exceeding 15

terabits per second (Tbps), a total length of about 7,800 km and routed to bypass areas prone to damage by earthquakes and

typhoons. The cable has landing points in Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia, and will add Hong Kong in the first

    quarter of 2013.

NTT Communications is the major investor in the cable system, which has been constructed in cooperation with Malaysia-

based Telekom Malaysia, Philippines-based PLDT and Singapore-based StarHub. The route between Japan and Singapore

not only covers the shortest distance to maximize reliability and minimize latency, it is also connected directly to the Serangoon

Data Center in Singapore and later will also connect to the Hong Kong Financial Data Centre . The direct connection enables

customers there to use NTT Communications network, data centers and cloud services on an end-to-end, one-stop basis.

With the launch of the new subsea cable, NTT Communications will begin offering an enhanced global leased line service, by

incorporating ASEs low-latency routes into its existing Arcstar Global Leased Line Service. The newly enhanced service

leverages ASEs Japan-Singapore connection with an industry-leading latency of less than 65 milliseconds. Existing US-

Japan routes also will be used, including the NTT Communications own PC-1 cable which offers the lowest latency connection

between Tokyo and Chicago. Superior service between Asia and the U.S. is especially attractive for financial enterprises, such

as high-frequency trading firms that issue huge numbers of buy/sell orders for financial products and must transmit such

    information instantaneously.

Besides, NTT Communications will incorporate ASE into the backbone of its Tier-1 global IP network, which directly connects

the worlds major internet service providers (ISPs) and content providers, and, in the near future, will do the same for Arcstar

Universal One, its scalable, cloud-based network service.
