PCCW unveils NETVIGATOR Pocket Wi-Fi, a trend-setting mobile broadband service which enables customers to simultaneously connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets all under one single plan.

Fitting snugly into a small pocket, the Pocket Wi-Fi gear converts HSPA mobile signals into an umbrella of powerful Wi-Fi coverage for up to five devices to access the Internet securely. It functions for various Wi-Fi devices, such as netbooks, notebooks, port-able media players, handheld game consoles, per-sonal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones and even cameras.

Pocket Wi-Fi supports a maximum downlink speed of 7.2 Mbps, and a maximum uplink speed of 5.76 Mbps, made possible by PCCW’s HSPA mobile net-work which in turn is backed by PCCW NextGen’s super-fast optical fiber technology.

PCCW Consumer Group Managing Director Tom Chan said: “This first-in-Asia breakthrough demon-strates our determination to provide best-in-class wireless service to serve the market and for the bet-terment of Hong Kong as the leading financial and digital hub. Nowadays wireless Internet access has become part of our daily lives and the trend is to go online with more than one gadget simultaneously, wherever a user may be. The new service addresses

the customers’ need for an all-in-one solution with the ut-most convenience.”

He added: “We believe people like executives, particularly those who need to work outside their office, and young gadget lovers will greatly appreciate this new dimension of flexibility and convenience. Also, Pocket Wi-Fi is a perfect solution for remote offices of some small scale enterprises as the service facilitates multi-user Internet access any-where, anytime. We will never stop innovating to make everyday life more convenient and enjoyable for our cus-tomers.”

The Pocket Wi-Fi gear can also be plugged into a notebook via a USB cable, thereby offering simultaneous Internet access to a sixth device. Like NETVIGATOR Everywhere users, Pocket Wi-Fi users can enjoy roaming services around the world and it is therefore a desirable companion of frequent business travelers.

NTT Com Asia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTT Com-

munications Corporation (NTT Com), today announced

the official launch of Virtualization as a Service (VaaS) -

the first on demand full-gear virtualization service in Hong

Kong that offers integrated solutions covering remote

access, security and business continuity.

The newly launched VaaS series comprises all-round

virtualization solutions, ranging from Virtual Server Host-

ing and Virtual Infrastructure to Virtual Office, which en-

tirely elevates the technology to the next generation.

Housed in NTT Com’s Tier III+ data centre in Hong Kong

and equipped with HKNet’s premium internet service “vIP

-Net” powered by NTT Com Tier 1 IP backbone, the VaaS

solutions ensure exceptionally speedy connectivity and

high security.

The signature product Virtual Office is the best design for

enterprises that manage a large number of mobile work-

force and offshore office operations. Through the

“MagicConnect” USB key - a highly advanced and secure

remote access technology, users can access a virtual-PC

environment and office applications with their remote PC

anywhere, anytime.

The service is a best-effort solution to reduce Total Cost

of Ownership (TCO) by saving infrastructure deployment

time, leveraging physical resources and providing hands-

on application management and upgrades. Under VaaS,

companies can save up to 50% on their IT cost compared

to traditional virtualization solutions. The service fee is

subject to an Operational Expenditure (OPEX) basis in

which cost estimation becomes steady and predictable,

while companies remain scalable and flexible to plan

future business growth.

“As data security, space and manpower are the core

considerations in modern IT management, virtualization

is an ideal solution for most enterprises. NTT Com Asia’s

Virtualization as a Service provides wide-ranging cost-

saving and IT management solutions to meet the ever-

changing business environment. Backed up by our world

-class Tier-1 IP backbone, data centre services and the

hosted applications developed by our subsidiary HKNet,

we believe that this is an unprecedented total solution

implemented in Hong Kong.” says Mr. Takanobu Maeda,

SmarTone-Vodafone announced the launch of the new HTC HeroTM, Hong Kong's latest AndroidTM-powered smartphone. SmarTone-Vodafone continues its innovation on the AndroidTM platform by designing personalised user profiles on the horizontally scrolling 7-panel home screen and offering a wider range of exclusive apps and widgets to better meet the needs of Hong Kong users. This sets a new standard in smartphones for usability, Internet accessibility and speed. “Building on the superb experience of the AndroidTM platform with the HTC MagicTM, we have taken HTC's new innovative Sense user interface and customised it for our customers," said Douglas Li, CEO of SmarTone-Vodafone. "We appreci-ate that our users lead busy lives and have different needs dictated by their hectic work schedules and social calendars. SmarTone-Vodafone Scenes organises the best of the Inter-net, alongside our multimedia services and exclusive widgets and apps, in a logical and intuitive way that is really easy to grasp and simple to recall. The HTC HeroTM offers unrivalled usability, convenience and Internet accessibility, with super-fast speeds provided by SmarTone-Vodafone’s HSPA net-work. The result is that our customers are better organised and better connected, while staying informed and enter-tained." SmarTone-Vodafone Scenes offers two distinctive user pro-files, "In Town" and "Travel", organising a combination of the HTC Hero's features and SmarTone-Vodafone's own cus-tomised widgets and apps across the 7 home screen panels. "In Town" presents a clock and scheduler on the central home screen, together with People, Mail, Messages and Twitter. The Headline Express widget provides up-to-the-minute news updates, while the 5-day Weather widget re-ceives information and real-time storm warnings from HK Observatory. Scrolling right, the 3 screens are dedicated to everything Internet-related, including Google Mobile Ser-vices. Users can access GmailTM, Google TalkTM and Google SearchTM, enjoy an enhanced YouTubeTM experience or pull up Google MapsTM at a single touch of the screen. The panel also hosts the latest edition of SmarTone-Vodafone’s Always-on URL input bar, through which customers can type addresses to go directly to websites. A simple click reveals the browsing history, displaying all the web links in full, offer-ing unrivalled convenience and usability. The next panel hosts a widget for capturing web page images to be used as visual bookmarks, which allows for instant recognition when scanning them for selection. New additions to SmarTone-Vodafone’s widget portfolio include Mark Six, which provides the latest draw results and JetSo, which displays the latest promotional offers from a wide selection of retail brands around Hong Kong. Scrolling left reveals a full range of multimedia and entertain-ment services presented on the SmarTone-Vodafone Ser-

vices panel, including FoneTV, the first Mobile TV service on Android, giving customers 26 high-definition channels in-cluding E!, Animax and CNN right on their handset. Also featured are news and finance services, like Market Watch, PLUS and 24-hour Chinese News, as well as entertainment services such as Sports Unlimited, Bet to Win and Game Shock. The next panel is dedicated for enhancing the en-joyment of the user’s personal content. It hosts separate galleries for music, photos and videos and provides short-cuts to the music player and camera, as well as SmarTone-Vodafone’s Slide Show widget. The "Travel" user profile displays the time and weather in different time zones simultaneously, as well as placing the camera and Google MapsTM within easy reach, while hiding those widgets more specific to Hong Kong use. A dedicated panel places useful and critical information readily at hand, such as Travel Assist, which provides contact information for airlines, embassies and hospitals at overseas destinations. There are also useful apps like a compass, currency con-verter, translator, Places Directory, Wikitude and access to the Lonely Planet Travel Guide. A first for Android smartphones, the HTC HeroTM boasts a 5 Mega-pixel auto focus camera and its 3.2” HVGA touch-screen offers a multi-touch user interface with improved smudge resistance. It supports Flash 8, letting users view more and richer graphics, animations and video content on the Web. The HTC HeroTM has a multi-purpose search but-ton, which can be used within the phonebook, mailbox, as well as browsing Android's official applications store, AndroidTM Market. Thousands of apps and games are cur-rently available for download onto the smartphone free of charge to offer more variety and further enrich the user ex-perience. “The powerful AndroidTM smartphone platform not only offers a better experience for accessing Google Mobile Services but also the opportunity for SmarTone-Vodafone to tailor widgets and applications specifically for customers," adds Mr. Li. "With our launch of the HTC HeroTM, we offer an even greater range of services that are relevant and compelling to our customers and offer greater accessibility, faster speed and superb ease of use. And what is more, customers who have bought the HTC MagicTM can enjoy a free software upgrade in the very near future, to the same level as the HTC HeroTM, and they will be able to enjoy the same user experience and services. To ensure a full protection to organizations’ information security, CPCNet’s TrustCSI™ UTM provides enterprises a hassle-free first line network defense solution that requires for no CAPEX investment and minimal technical support. TrustCSI™ UTM Integrated security solution for access control, user au-thentication, data protection with managed services All-in-one security solution Optimized for maximum performance, CPCNet’s TrustCSI™ UTM security solution integrates multiple security components including firewall, anti-virus, intru-sion prevention, anti-spam and web filtering without wor-ries of incompatibility. By all accounts, Internet growth has not shown any signs of slowing down. Fueled by the continued transmission of video over the Internet, IP traffic is expected to quintu-ple between 2008 and 2013. Here in Asia Pacific, IP traffic should reach 21 exabytes per month by 2013, the equivalent of transferring 4.1 million DVDs. [Cisco Visual Networking Index: “Forecast and Methodology, 2008-2013,” June 9, 2009]

According to new data from TeleGeography, Internet traffic growth was fastest in emerging markets, with South Asia growing well over 100 percent in 2009. Why is this happening? Content was always developed in the West, stored in the West and viewed in the West. Now, countries with large populations such as China, India, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia are driving bandwidth demand with rapidly increasing broadband penetration. Ovum projects the number of broadband subscribers in the Asia Pacific region will grow from 359 million in 2009 to 1.2 billion in 2014. [“Broadband Fore-cast: 2009-2014,” Ovum, June 2009] As more Asians have come “online”, content viewing has begun to shift to Asia, followed by storage and content distribution. There also are increasing indigenous con-tents being developed in Asia for the Asians. The recent and new deployment of several new trans-Pacific and intra-Asia undersea cables will facilitate Asian telcos connecting through key hubs in Asia such as To-

kyo, Hong Kong and Singapore as well as to the U.S. In the current environment and for the foreseeable future, content will continue to move from West to Asia as well as stay within the region. With the recent cable cuts, the Asian telcos are now more concerned about cable diver-sity as well as route diversity. Network service providers are running their net-

works “hotter” in an effort to reduce capital ex-penditures. Asian carriers would do well to ac-quire IP Transport services to expand their net-works and complement their reach around the world. By connecting enterprise customers to the Internet for transmitting data to and from any point in the world at a specified bandwidth, car-riers will be able to provide their customers with the freedom they need to conduct business anywhere in the world at any time. To satisfy all of their IP service needs with a global provider, carriers should look for a pro-vider with a global Tier 1 Internet backbone and a large number of peering agreements with the major network and content providers around the world. Fewer data hand-offs translate into faster

transmission, less down time, and greater productivity. At the same time, speed without security and quality of service would be senseless. An integrated global IP MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) network protects data from being seen and prevents anyone from knowing where data is going to or coming from at all times. The IP Transit service selected should be scalable and flexible to cater to new requirements for IPv6 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. With scalable bandwidth at low la-tencies, carriers can increase capacity whenever they need it while still enjoying exceptional speed, security, reliability and quality of service. Look for a vendor with a single Autonomous System (AS) number to facilitate this. Traditionally, Global Crossing has sold its services out-side of Asia to Asian carriers who own their own cable connections to the U.S. Recently, however, we are pro-viding more services to Asian carriers from our Points of Presence (PoPs) in Asia such as Hong Kong and Singa-pore. Global Crossing operates on-net PoPs in 11 coun-tries in Asia and provides services to more than 690 cities in 60 countries on six continents.
