PRINCIPALS REPORT
Narrandera High School has had a very busy but productive term. You may
have seen on our school’s Facebook page that we have been invited to par-
ticipate in the Teacher Success Profile Project which involves schools that
have been nominated by the Centre of Educational Statistics and Evalua-
tion as being ‘high value add’ schools. The point of this project is for the
schools involved to be a part of a case study articulating what quality and
successful teaching looks like. We are thrilled to be selected to be involved
with Mrs Milne completing the first video conference regarding the project
today. The project will be completed over the next three years with a re-
port being published at the end of the study.
Last week we had a merit selection for the position of Head Teacher Ad-
ministration. I am pleased to announce that Mr Brett Ireland has been suc-
cessful in gaining the position, which was created with funds provided un-
der the Principal Support allocation announced this year. This will support
Mrs Milne and I with our administration work to allow us to focus more on
strengthening our curriculum and being Instructional Leaders within our
school. Mr Ireland will continue his work as Careers Advisor as well as his
new position.
Towards the end of this term we are putting the finishing touches on our
2018-2020 School Plan. We have kept the same strategic directions as our
previous plan, focusing on Student Learning and Engagement, Teacher
Quality and School and Community values. I would like to thank all staff
and parents who had input into the plan. We will look to publish the plan
early next term on our school website.
Lastly you may be aware that we are hosting a Year 7 Parent Information
Evening at 7:30pm on Thursday 5th April in our school library. The evening
is aimed at providing an opportunity for prospective parents to learn more
about our school, to ask questions they may have and to enjoy some sup-
per afterwards with staff. This night will be followed by our annual Hands
on High School night next term.
Heading into the long weekend, I would like to wish all of our
families a wonderful Easter break.

Year 7 and 8 Camp Longbeach As part of the Year Day organisation for 2018, Year 7 and 8 students had the opportunity
to attend a 3 day camp at Longbeach, just out of Bateman’s Bay. Students had an oppor-
tunity to develop relationships and teamwork skills by completing a range of activities
that required organisation, strategy and cooperation to achieve the goals successfully.
Activities included a beach carnival, raft building, a laser skirmish game of Capture the
Flag and a miniature tough mudder course. The aim of the excursion was to build rela-
tionships and help students to understand that although they all have individual skills
and talents, that as a group, they can combine their unique talents to create a stronger
team.
The teachers supervising the excursion were impressed with the way students handled
the challenges they encountered, never giving up even when they were outside of their
personal comfort zone. It was wonderful to see so many students take the time to sup-
port each other and celebrate each other’s achievements.
Thanks to Ms Rogers and Ms Brooke for their organisation of the excursion, and to Mr
Kroek, Mr Chappell and Ms Germantse for coming along to supervise and join in the
activities.
On Wednesday the 14th of March, a group of 43 students went to Yarra-wonga for a PBS rewards trip. PBS is our Positive Behaviour for Success
program and any students who had demonstrated excellent behaviour in our three core values of Responsibility, Respect and Learning, were eligi-ble to attend. In the morning we went to Aquazone water park and had loads of laughs. The water was surprisingly warm and the students ran,
climbed and jumped themselves to exhaustion in the 50 minutes we were given. The teachers also had a ball but grew tired much more quickly than the students. We had lunch at either McDonalds or KFC and then headed to the Yacht Club for some Stand-up Paddle Boarding and kayaking fun.
This activity was heaps of fun and even though the kayaks were made for 5 year olds, we managed to remain balanced and rowed quite a way be-fore swapping for a paddle board. A few people slept on the way home
(Mrs Donaldson) and we had a fun day!

RYDA Earlier this term Year 11 students travelled to Yanco to attend the Rotary Youth Driver
Awareness program. This program involves var ious member s of the community com-
ing together to present workshops focused on road safety. Students attended a number of
sessions on the day which explored the behaviours that contribute to road trauma, the con-
sequences of road fatalities and the road rules and legal ramifications for not abiding by
these laws. In our first session, students dissected a road fatality case and explored the be-
haviours and decisions that led to that fatality. In their next session students received a talk
from an ex-policeman and driver instructor focusing on the behaviours and decisions
young people make that contribute to road accidents. Students than witnessed a car travel-
ling at various speeds and predicted stopping distance and looked at the impact of speed on
driver outcomes. After lunch students attended another session that focused on road laws,
legal ramifications and outcomes of not abiding by these laws. This session also focused
heavily on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and the impact peers have on
driver behaviour and how young people (peers) can act as a protective factor as opposed to
a risk factor for their friends. In our final session students attended a talk by two young
people who were survivors of a road accident. Both people had suffered a number of phys-
ical injuries and severe brain injuries. This session emphasised the ripple effect road trau-
ma has on family, friends and the wider community. It also focused on the impact being
involved in a road accident has on survivors and how that event altered their lives. This
session had an extreme impact on students. The program was immensely valuable and Nar-
randera High School would like to thank Rotary for organising and hosting this program
for our students.
OPEN BOYS CRICKET On Tuesday the 27th of February our Open Boys Cricket Team competed in a T20
Gala day with six other schools from around the region to see who would progress
to the next round of the Davidson Shield State Knockout.
We were drawn to play Griffith High first and after winning the toss, captain Con-
nor Vearing sent the opposition in to bat. Some good bowling was not backed up
by some poor catching as the Griffith High top order got to work. Some ‘quick’
work from Shaun Foley saw the first wicket fall via a run out, before Dylan
Whiteman struck in his second over, James Smith taking a very good catch on the
boundary.
The runs kept coming for Griffith High, though some accurate bowling from Con-
nor saw him claim two wickets as Griffith High ended their 20 overs on 4-157.
Connor (2-30) and Dylan (1-20) were the wicket takers while Jack Rilen (0-18)
was the most economical of the bowlers.
In reply we lost Shaun Foley in the second over for eight before James Smith (15)
and Jack Sergeant (4) put on 22 for the second wicket. When Smith fell a collapse
was triggered, NHS losing 7-15 before Taj Trengrove showed some lower order re-
sistance. Taj hit 3 boundaries on his way to a quick fire 13, while Clayton James
finished not out on 3.
The final score of 9-64 showed a lot of patience in the batting, and while a 93 run
loss wasn’t the desired result there were a lot of positives from the game.
Our second match was a consolation Ten10 match against RAP where we batted
first. Shaun and Connor, playing in their last school cricket matches, opened the
batting and put on 45 before Shaun fell for 28 in the seventh over. Connor batted
through to finish not out on 14, while the 11 wides RAP bowled made up the rest
of the score. Dylan Whiteman, Andrew Tunks, Reid Hitchens and Xavier Vearing
were all dismissed without scoring with the final score 5-53 meaning RAP needed
54 to win.
Things started badly in the bowling department as Shaun was taken for 15 in the
first over before Taj went for 20 in the second. Connor (1-4) took NHS’s only
wicket thanks to another good catch from James Smith before RAP reached the tar-
get in the fifth over.
All the boys had an enjoyable day and Cricket was definitely the winner, as well as Wade High School who will move on to the next round.
Open Girls Basketball
21st March 2018 Last Wednesday teams from Leeton, Wade, Kooringal, Griffith, RAP, Temora and Narrandera
High all converged on the Stadium to compete in the 2018 Open Girls Basketball Knockout. The
day started with Kooringal taking on Griffith, and RAP taking on Temora. Kooringal proved too
tall and too strong under the basket for Griffith, and Temora was very quick on the fast breaks and
was extremely accurate with their shooting. Both Temora and Kooringal went through to the next
round. Narrandera High took on last year’s Riverina winners in Leeton. Leeton was extremely
athletic and played a fast paced game, running away with it in the end. Wade had a bye in the first
round, but the following officials for the day, Jeremy Johnson, Heath Chappell, Heath Wasley
Reilly, Jack Sergeant, Zara Hands, Mia Buchanan and Kayleigh Cassidy, were happy to don the
basketball uniform and play Wade in the Bye. Very proud moment for the boys – representing in
the Open GIRLS basketball!!!
The second round saw Kooringal taking on Temora and Leeton taking on Wade. Kooringal again
proved too strong due to their height and accuracy under the basket. Winning again, quite con-
vincingly, 36 – 28. Leeton and Wade was a hard fought game, with all girls producing some great
basketball. With Leeton in foul trouble late, Wade was able to score freely and run away from
Leeton in the final quarter.
This left Wade vs Kooringal in the Final for the Gala day and battling out for Riverina A Champi-
ons. Both teams came out firing and they were level pegging for much of the first and second
quarter. Kooringal girls seemed to tire more quickly with the day’s basketball taking its toll.
Wade proved too strong and took out the final 38 – 28.
Thanks to all those students
who officiated for the day,
either on bench or referee-
ing, and congratulations to
the Narrandera Team.
Whilst we weren’t winners
on the day, they all dis-
played excellent sportsman-
ship and teamwork through-
out our games.
Senior Science has been completing a unit called 'Humans at Work'. In this unit, they come to understand the workings of the human body so they can best understand the importance of and strategies for staying safe in the workplace. To supplement their learning, students have been exploring the structures in vivo using real life examples of some of the body parts they are studying.
Year 8 have been working on an 'Energy' unit. This unit addresses many Energy related themes such as types of energy, the law of conservation of energy and energy efficient housing to name a few. The pur-pose of the experiment was to determine which type of metal is the best conductor of heat. Student found that copper is the best conductor. This result helps students understand why copper wires are widely used for electrical cabling.
Congratulations to all the entrants of the Narrandera Camera Club Photographic Exhibition last week!
Fantastic work representing Narrandera High School in the arts community. Special congratulations
to Ella Ireland who won in multiple categories within the Junior Competition.
Stage 6 Visual Art students Toby Warren, Anna Craze and Sarah Vicary’s exhibits are shown below.
