If you ever have any concerns regarding your Child’s health please do not hesitate to contact us on 5243 5355. Anchi Sherpa, School Nurse

MANGO NEWS Strive Camp 2019 A couple of weeks ago, the Year 9’s went on a strive camp to Lady Northcote. We participated in many activities such as canoeing, giant swing, high ropes/ leap of faith, frisbee golf, archery, mountain biking, initiatives and survival challenge. On the first night we played a really fun game of trivia and on the second night we had an 80’s themed disco that every-one dressed up for. The food was really good, my favorite was the morning tea jam and cream scones. Overall it was a really fun camp. Emma Sobey and Isabella Irvin 9 Mango Year 7 Volleyball Our Year 7 team defeated Blue in their second volleyball game and have continued on a winning streak, making the final this Friday. Congratulations to them and thanks for Liam McPherson and Charlie Irvin for coaching the team. We wish them well.

MUSIC NEWS The past fortnight has been full of performances and assessments for all our students. All instrumental music students completed Performance Assessments in the first week of June, and participated in the Public Performance component of this assessment. Woodwind and Bass performed in the PAC, and Brass and Percussions students in the Bandroom. There were standout performances from both beginning and experienced performers, and the event was well attended by parents and friends. Many thanks to Chris Henzgen, Amanda Linton, Donna Zarahopoulos and Rohan Laird for pre-paring students for this event, and to Kristine Mellens who accompanied so many students for their performances. Make up performances for those who missed the Public Performance were held on Thursday 13 th June, at lunchtime in the Bandroom. Thanks also to Fiona Hergstrom, who so generously lends us media equipment so that we can record our performances and events - much appreciated Hergie! Beginning Band spent some quality time in the new PAC last Monday, having their photo taken for some publicity photos for the new facility. This was a great chance for the Band to rehearse in front of an audience, and for Liam Sharp to prac-tice his newfound talent as a Conductor! Beginning Band also performed at last Monday’s General Assembly, and gave a fabulous performance despite the freez-ing conditions in the gym.

Last Tuesday selected Bands from schools across Geelong participated in a Pop Up Festival at the Piano Bar. This festival celebrates the efforts of bands writing and per-forming their own material, and it was fabulous to watch the next generation of songwrit-ers and performers sharing their work with each other in such a supportive professional venue.

Last Thursday, superbly hosted by Nadine Joy, our Voice students held a performance night in the Band room. Many thanks to Nadine for making this opportunity happen for our students, and congratulations on their performance to: Amity Durran, Erika Gray, Mackenzie Coles, Aggie Forssman, Ariella Isiah Holmes, Emily Cos, Maya Kerr, Susan Friswell, Eliza Grattan Usher, Jemima Worldron, Ripley Hepburn, Deanna McKiernan, Olivia Gray and Ella Pratt. On Tuesday, Intermediate Jazz headed off to Freedom Aged Care in Grovedale, entertaining the residents of the facility with a varied and interesting performance program, and developing their understanding of what it means to set up and run a performance in a community setting. It was fantastic to see students stepping outside their comfort zone, taking time to introduce themselves and have a chat with residents, and helping to serve afternoon tea. Many thanks to Rohan Laird for planning and coordinating this event.

MIDDLE YEARS REPORT Congratulations to ALL Middle Years students, parents and teachers. We have come to the end of a long and cold, but extremely exciting and productive Term 2! Year 8 Medieval History Incursion Last Wednesday, the year 8 classes were invited to extend their current studies of Gone But Not Forgotten and become immersed in the Middle Ages. Participating in workshops outlining the history and evolution of weapons & armour, how to dance according to your class and the crime and punishments utilised for those who broke the law. Students were able to become warriors, knights, royalty and peasants to explore the difficulties, peculiarities and wonderment of life during this time. In the afternoon, many students took the opportunity to try their hand at combat against one of the presenters. They were supplied with various weapons, replica of those used, to try and strike the knight. A few got close, but the knight was definitely victorious this year. Well done to all students on participating with enthusiasm and showing their gratitude to the presenters throughout the day and a huge thank you to Ms Amie Reusch for organising the incursion. Term 3 Learning Students learning can be greatly supported by pre-teaching. Just as teachers pre-teach prior to an excursion, we can pre-teach prior to a new topic. This includes pre-teaching vocabulary as improved vocabulary is very important for comprehension. The Middle Years teachers have developed a glossary list for each of the Core subjects as well as a Home Support document. We encourage all students to have a copy of this and to get a better understanding of the vocabulary that will be covered in Term 3. The Home Support document will be useful for parents to read to know what we will be doing in class. There are some activities and resources you may like to have a look at. These documents can be accessed via Compass, in the resources tab of the students Core class. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE! Please don’t throw away any spare of the following:

Cardboard cylinders – baking paper/cling wrap rolls, etc

Small plastic bottles – 600ml or less

Popsicle sticks (washed)

Scrap lightweight material (for sails on boats) In Term 3 for the Year 7 student’s Rich Task, Science and Numeracy components they will be building various structures in which these materials will be necessary. If you could please send these to school with your child this would be greatly appreciated! Finally, thank you to all parents/carers of Middle Years students, we appreciate your ongoing support and communication - please do not hesitate to contact your child’s form teacher with any questions or concerns, or of course reasons to celebrate! We love hearing about your child’s accomplishments outside of school too! See you next term! Tara Robertson, Middle Years Leader

OUR ITALIAN SISTER SCHOOL EXCHANGE PROGRAM Since 2007, our students studying Italian from Years 9 -11 have had the opportunity to participate in our vibrant and successful Italian Sister School Program. This opportunity is offered every two years and thus far, seven (actually eight) exchanges have taken place as in 2011; two school groups from two different schools in Italy came to BHS. This year, Prof Vannata, Prof Cologni, Mr. Hucker and myself had the pleasure in taking 27 of our keen students on a month study and tour of Italy. The benefits of this experience are numerous. Included here are some of our students’ testimonials. If you are interested, Il Globo, the Italian/Australian newspaper has also done an exposé of our experience, which is available from 27 June. I wish to thank Mr. Hucker, Lucia Vannata and Ms Cologni for their unswerving support in making this trip fantastic! To all the students who participated…. a bigger thank you for being awesome! So from 13 July to 25 July, the Italian students who hosted our BHS students will be visiting us and participate in classes as well as be involved in organized excursions outside of school. Our students are so happy and looking forward to seeing their new best friends from Padova, Italy. We welcome them on the first day of Term 3. Ciao for now, Prof G

On the 20

th of March we set off for our month long trip to Italy. Our days were always full of amazing activities and some of my

highlights were the hike through the Little Dolomites, our guided tour through Matera and our boat ride tour around the island of Capri. My favourite part of our trip though was our 12-day homestay. My homestay partner and family were lovely and made me feel so welcome in their home. I built up a great friendship with my homestay partner, which I hope will last for many years. I also got a firsthand experience on what typical Italian life is like and that has given me an insight few people have. I also formed great friendships with the rest of the students on the trip, which made the experience even more fun. This trip was an amazing experience and has changed me as a person. From making me a lot more confident in my Italian and just generally giving me more confidence in my daily life. I am so glad I got the opportunity to go. – Emma Anderson The Italian exchange was hands done one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I made so many friends from both Australia and Italy during the best month of my life. Living with an Italian host partner and travelling overseas without family, was something I couldn’t imagine doing but looking back, this trip has changed me and I will never forget the most wonderful opportunity I was given. Emma Thorpe My time in Italy was extremely helpful for improving my language skills. I could see immediate improvement in my speaking capabilities. The use of my vocabulary with each food or dish I would order became more and more second nature and I was able to hold basic conversations, and overall I could understand many words written on storefronts such as Farmacia (Pharmacy). By experiencing the culture and exploring history, I gained a deeper understanding of the language. Joel Hunter

You can always plan a trip to Italy and see all the beautiful cities and landmarks, but you don’t always get a chance to live with an Italian family and experience what it’s like to live in Italy. Before commencing our two-week tour, we stayed with our host brothers and sisters that are students from our sister school Liceo Curiel in Padova. It was very interesting to see how different their school life is, and while there are many positives about it, it made me appreciate the good things about Australian school. Towards the end, we formed a bond with the Italians and that is something that will always very special to me. We will be lucky enough to host these students when they come to our school in July and I am really looking forward to seeing them again and showing them how we live life here in Australia. There is always going to be a special bond with the group of students that went on the trip to Italy because we have something very special in common; the amazing memories that only we truly understand and share. On a trip like this, being away from your home and normal life for a month, you learn so much about yourself, but also about other people and the world around you. Overall, I thoroughly recommend this trip for any younger students studying Italian, as there are endless benefits. You will improve your Italian speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary immensely and you are able to see the most beautiful cities and landmarks Italy has to offer. most importantly though, you will get an opportunity to live and experience life like an Italian, with an Italian student, something you will never get to do in any other scenario; and it is definitely something worth experiencing. You will have the absolute time of your life, as I and everyone else on this trip did so. - Makinley Sharrock 11 Gold

Spending 4 weeks of my life in Italy has been the best experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity I will never forget. Especially the 12 days I spent living in an Italian household, eating what they eat, watching what they watch on TV, and going to school as they do. I loved every minute of the trip and I have made lifelong friends. The Following Tuesday (Week 3 Tuesday 30th July) orders will be delivered to the Belmont High School staffroom. Students and parents can collect their orders at this time and loca-tion. Green House has been busy in Term 2 with so many things going on. We’ve had representation in a number of the Winter Inter-School sports (AFL, Soccer, Netball), Year 9 STRIVE Camp, Year 7 Readers’ Cup and Volleyball competi-tion just to name a few! STRIVE Camp Our Year 9s ventured to Lady Northcote camp in Bacchus Marsh where they undertook initiatives, team building and confidence activi-ties. They had an awesome time and no doubt were exhausted on the weekend! The 80s themed Disco night will be something they’ll remember for a long time I’m sure. Readers’ Cup Our two Year 7 groups placed 3rd and 4th follow-ing the Readers’ Cup tournament and worked hard throughout. We acknowledged the stu-dents’ involvement with certificates at our most recent House Assembly. Well done!

Volleyball Competition Following publication, both of our Year 7 groups are in contention to play off for the Volleyball Trophy. 7N and 7V have shown teamwork and enthusi-asm in all of their matches thus far. Good luck for your remaining games from all of Green House! Thank you to Clayton Ryan, Keely Heron and Co-rey Przastek (11N) and Tayla Frost and Maddie Pinkerton (10N) for coach-ing the teams.

BHS MULTI CULTURAL DAY

We are pleased to announce that this year’s SRC multi- cultural day will be held on Friday 16th

August. Following on from the huge success of the day last year, we are calling on students to be

actively involved in promoting their cultural heritage by providing food to sell at a stall or

performing or running an activity. The festivities will take place at lunchtime and all money raised

will go to an international charity (TBA).

The Multicultural day committee is busy recruiting students to show off their cultural heritage in

some way. If you can support your child in showcasing their cultural heritage by providing food,

traditional costume, equipment for music/dance or in any other way please encourage them to see

Ms Suter or Ms McCarthy in the library or contact us via email [email protected]

The day is about celebrating and learning about our diverse backgrounds in an inclusive and

enjoyable way. It is also about empowering students to make a difference in the world by raising

money for those that do not have the privilege of our safe and comfortable lives.

U-N-I-T-E-D On Wednesday 26th June we had a visit from Western United FC the new A-League Soccer team that are going to be playing their games in Geelong later this year. Earlier in the year Former Socceroo Steve Horvat came to speak in General Assembly to invite BHS to vote for the team name and colour’s. Western United was the winner and they will play in Green & Black – not too different to BHS’s col-ours! Steve came back with new recruit Dylan Pierias to watch our junior, inter-mediate and senior soccer teams play some pick-up games, finishing with some Q&A. Dylan Pierias He may be the youngest of United’s new recruits, but Pierias’ ability has already been mentioned alongside the likes of Real Madrid youngster Vini-cius Junior and Borussia Dortmund’s England international Jadon Sancho. That honour came back in 2017 when Pierias was identified by the UK's Guardian as one of the 60 best young talents in world football. Not bad for a kid who had only just turned 17 and was the only Aussie on the list. But the Melbourne City full-back is no stranger to setting impressive benchmarks Pierias became the first player born in the 21st century to play in the Hyundai A-League when he debuted for City at just 16 in the 2016/17 sea-son. In the same campaign he was a key part of City's Foxtel National Youth League side that won the Championship. Hopefully Belmont High School will get behind Western United in the new season and support them in their games at Kardinia Park.

There will also be a school holiday soccer skills program hosted by West-ern United in the September School Holidays.

Watch this space…..Go United!
