This section concerns so-called “skill”tools. A pair of calipers (in commonterms, one caliper) is one of the oldesttypes of comparison measuring tools.They depend on “feel” to measure a part, transfer the dimension to aprecision rule, micrometer or slidecaliper, and get a good reading. Thisinvolves skill and experience. If usedproperly, calipers can measure to at least.004� or 0.01mm.

Measuring with a caliper requires aslight a touch as possible because mostcomparisons are made with rules,where the caliper is laid against thegraduations, without the contactstouching anything.

Calipers and dividers are offered in two general designs: spring-type andfirm-joint. Spring-type calipers aretensioned against the screw adjustment,while the firm-joint is held by friction.

Caliper sizes refer to the distance fromthe fulcrum to the end of the leg. Themeasuring capability of spring-typecalipers and dividers is approximatelythe same as the size. The measuringcapability of firm-joint and lock-jointcalipers is approximately one-third morethan the size.

Caliper points are not hardened becausethey only compare measurements. Thecontact points can be easily shaped inwhatever manner desired. All dividerpoints however, are hardened.

Dividers and trammels are usually set torule graduations and can be set moreaccurately than calipers.

Starrett “Fay” Calipers and Dividers featureexceptionally rugged construction. The legsare made from heavy square stock,machined to a smooth taper. The fulcrumstud is hardened and has a large bearingsurface to prevent side deflection of thelegs. The bow spring is both strong andflexible, and the adjustment screw iscentrally located in the legs to assuresmooth action. Furnished in either springnut or solid nut models.

The Starrett quick-adjusting automatic-closing spring nut is designed for makingquick, positive adjustments. The threads ofthe nut firmly engage the screw at theslightest pressure from the leg. When thepressure is withdrawn, the nutautomatically releases itself, sliding freelyover the screw.

Starrett “Yankee” Calipers and Dividers aremade from a high-grade steel and well-finished. The legs are made of flat stockand are very durable. The fulcrum stud ishardened and has a smooth bearingsurface. The bow spring, although flexible,is exceedingly strong to assure reliability.

All sizes are available with either spring nutor solid nut. The Starrett quick-adjustingautomatic-closing spring nut is designedfor making fast, positive adjustments. Thethreads of the nut firmly engage the screwat the slightest pressure from the leg. Whenthe pressure is withdrawn, the nutautomatically releases itself, sliding freelyover the screw. This feature saves time in opening and closing.

These calipers feature a joint that can bequickly and firmly locked by a partial turn of the large knurled disc. A spring washerunder the disc maintains proper tension of the legs when the joint is unlocked.

One of the handiest and most versatilecalipers ever made … Starrett Lock-JointTransfer Calipers have three key features…a transfer arm, fine-adjustment screw, andlocking joint.

The transfer arm makes it possible totransfer measurements from the inside ofchambered cavities, over flanges and otherplaces where it is necessary to move thelegs after they have been set to size.Simply lock the joint, loosen the transferarm binding nut and swing the leg out or in to clear the obstruction. Then move itback against the transfer arm stop and the exact size can then be transferred to a rule or gage.

The adjusting screw permits closeadjustments for fine measurements. Afterthe legs have been set to approximate sizeand the joint locked, the final adjustment ismade by a few turns of the knurledadjusting nut. Trammel Heads, DividerPoints, AttachmentsNo. 59 SeriesThe No. 59 Series is very useful for layingout and scribing circles beyond the capacityof ordinary dividers. The trammel headshave a clamping device that firmly holdsvarious attachments.

The attachments consist of two sizes ofcaliper legs, 6�, 9 1/2� (150, 238mm),two sizes of divider points 6�, 9�(150, 225mm) which are eccentric for closesettings, and a set of four ball points withholder. The ball points with 6�(150mm) holder are for scribing circlesfrom the center of any hole up to 1 1/2� (38mm) in diameter. One of the large caliperlegs features a joint operated by aneccentric thumb piece for fine adjustments.A pencil may be clamped in either head inplace of the caliper legs or divider points.

The heads will accommodate any sizebeam from 3/4-1 1/2� (19-38mm) in width.Since beam length requirements varywidely, and they are easy for the user tofashion, we do not furnish a beam.

A rigid, well-designed trammel for layout,scribing, and measuring distances andcircles. The top of the beam is flattened sothat when the trams are clamped inposition, they will not turn from pressure onthe points. The trams are held in place byspring friction, which prevents them fromsliding when the nuts are loosened forsetting. One tram has a fine-adjustingscrew for the points.

Each tram has a knurled swivel grip at thetop that turns freely, making it veryconvenient to swing the tool when scribingcircles. The 3� (75mm) points may beadjusted for length in the spring chucksand can be easily replaced with caliper legsor other attachments listed.
