You have to wonder at times whatmakes some people tick.

The deliberate spilling of oilonto a suburban driveway andpostbox (see page 3) has got to beup there with the top inane ideasembraced by any crackpotanywhere.

Even if the oil-spillingperpetrator felt they had justcause, seeking revenge by tippingout oil where people could bewalking, cycling or driving seemsto be stupid beyond belief.

Whatever happened to face-to-face discourse in the event ofdisagreements – imagined orotherwise?

And if that doesn’t work, thereare a host of other steps that canbe taken without putting innocentpeople in danger.

This instant, knee-jerk need forrevenge pops up at every turntoday.

It sometimes occurs to me thatthe ease with which people canexpress vitriol via social mediaplatforms has spawned a beliefout there that absolutely anythinggoes.

Mistaken identity leads to damageEMMA JAMES

Jenny and Gordon Baker have had engine poured over their driveway twice in the last six weeks. They believe they have been wrongfully targeted.

A Cambridge couple believes acase of mistaken identity has ledto two separate incidents leavingtheir driveway stained by engineoil.

Twice in the past six weeks,Jenny and Gordon Baker havewoken up to the oil poured acrosstheir Tulip Dr driveway and overtheir letterbox.

It happened for the first time inFebruary, and again last week.

‘‘There was oil spilt on the foot-path and down the road towardsthe high school, and we found theoil can by the high school underthe construction sign,’’ Jennysaid.

She said it took two weeks and$400 to remove the stain fromtheir driveway last time.

Gordon works as a caretaker atCambridge Middle School andinitially wondered if it had some-thing to do with the arson thattook place on school groundsearlier this year, but CCTV foot-age they have seen shows an olderperson.

‘‘I don’t really have anything todo with the students at school sowe have no reason to believe thatwe have upset someone,’’ he said.

‘‘We haven’t offended someoneso much that they would do some-thing like this.’’

Gordon and Jenny think theperson doing the damage mightbelieve someone else lives at theiraddress, so they are beingtargeted accidentally.

They have since installed LEDlighting that illuminates theirentire driveway, and will nowhave to spend even more money

to get rid of the stain for a secondtime.

‘‘It’s cost us about $3000 to dateand if we have to replace the con-crete it will be closer to $10,000,’’said Gordon.

He thinks the oil may comefrom a diesel motor.

‘‘It’s scary because you don’tknow what’s going to happennext.’’

Jenny said she has become

quite paranoid, checking thedriveway every night before shegoes to bed, and going to bed laterthan usual.

Sergeant Gordon Grantham ofthe Cambridge Police also

believes the couple has been mis-taken for someone else.

‘‘Some CCTV camera footagefrom the area has been viewedand enquiries are continuing,’’ hesaid.

Sunday turned out to be a shed-load of fun for those at the streetcarnival’s ‘Best Little Shed’fundraising competition finale atthe lively end of Empire St.

All six painted sheds wereauctioned off to new homes, prizeswere won, and a figure of $3000 –and rising – was raised for theWaikato-Bay of Plenty CancerSociety.

The event was a new Cam-bridge Autumn Festival addition.

It was the brainchild of MarkWatts from Lugtons Cambridge.

The six teams involved werefive banks – ASB, BNZ, ANZ,Kiwibank and Westpac – andCambridge High School (CHS).

Five real estate companiesfunded the sheds – Lugtons Cam-bridge, Bayleys Cambridge, Cam-bridge Real Estate, LJ HookerCambridge, and Harcourts Cam-bridge.

The Cambridge Autumn Festi-val committee invited CHS to cre-ate the sixth shed.

Mitre 10 Mega in Cambridgesupplied the sheds at preferentialprices, and Resene Paints NZdonated the paint.

With all that in hand, each ofthe six teams had to construct andpaint their shed to reflect theirversion of the ‘Cambridge’ theme.

BNZ whisked off the overalltrophy as winner of the Battle ofthe Banks competition.

The Best Artwork trophy wentto Kiwibank, and the People’sChoice Award went to the Cam-bridge High School team.

We went to a couple ofthe evening shows and enjoyedwandering around with thecrowds during Sunday’s streetfestival.

One of our friends said theyhave a similar event in their smalltown. They were delighted by therange of entertainment in theprogramme, and commentedparticularly on the mood of theday. They said everyone theyspoke to was really helpful andfriendly. They wanted me to passon their thanks. Our friends leaveto return home at the end of thisweek, but will take with themsome good memories and a fewtrinkets from that day.

Thank you everyone.

Crashes spark safety concernsEMMA JAMES

Three cars have crashed into a Cambridge landscaping business over a period of three months. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

‘‘We’ll do all we can to makethe road safer but we areimploring drivers to pleasetake care.’’WDC’s Barry Bergin

A barrier arm has been installedalong a Cambridge road after aspate of incidents where carscrashed into the yard of alandscaping business.

Greenscape manager GeorgeStafford was worried about apatch of road along Cambridge/TeAwamutu Rd, after three cars inas many months failed to take thecorner and crashed down the hillinto the yard of their property, smashing into concrete walls atthe bottom.

He said the crashes hadsparked safety concerns for hisstaff, customers and contractors.

‘‘We have to provide a safeenvironment for all of thosepeople.

‘‘The issue for us is that ifthere’s a customer in the yard, they have no chance of getting outof the way,’’ he said.

He’s not sure if the problemhad been related to signage or tothe road surface.

His concerns prompted him tocontact the Waipa DistrictCouncil suggesting that a barrierarm might be a good option inresolving the issue.

Waipa District Council groupmanager service delivery BarryBergin said the council sharedStafford’s concerns about the cor-ner.

The road had been resealed in2010 to improve traction in wet

weather con-ditions, and

more signage had been installed. That had made a difference – untilrecently.

‘‘The accidents have beenmainly at night, in wet weatherand speed looks to be an issue in

most of them,’’ Bergin said. They are yet to receive any

police reports about the crashes,as they can take some time toarrive with the council, but coun-cil team members had inspectedthe site.

‘‘’Greasy when wet’ signs have

been installed,’’ said Bergin.Stafford’s suggestion of a bar-

rier arm was also taken on boardand one was installed there lastweek.

Bergin urged people to slowdown as winter approaches.

‘‘Official police reports fromprevious accidents show thatspeed on that bend has been amajor contributor and in manyinstances, drivers have simplylost control of their vehicles.

‘‘We’ll do all we can to makethe road safer but we are implor-ing drivers to please take care,’’he said.

Local MPin Tokaanufor AnzacLocal MP Louise Upston will notbe at Cambridge’s ANZAC Daycommemorative services thisyear.

Instead, she will attend theDawn Service in Tokaanu,Turangi and districts, followed bya Civic Ceremony in Tokoroa tocommemorate ANZAC Day.

‘‘Last year I was in Tokoroa forthe Dawn Parade and I attendedthe Service Parade and CivicCommemoration in Cambridge,’’she said. ‘‘I am committed toattending many events around theelectorate each ANZAC Day topay my respects.

‘‘ANZAC Day is a day of com-memoration. It’s a day in whichwe pay our respects and weremember those fought for us andsacrificed so much to defend ourcountry’’, she said.

This year marks 101 yearssince the ANZAC’s landed atGallipoli, the site of New Zea-land’s first major battle of WorldWar I.

Upston said it was a day where‘‘we honour the New Zealanderswho showed loyalty, courage, camaraderie, and commitment.‘‘The red poppy symbolises theefforts of the many Kiwis fromour region who contributedtowards the efforts of our armedforces in Gallipoli. I will be wear-ing mine with pride.’’

Poppy day

Cambridge RSA secretary Nelson Goodley and president Bill McMillan with volunteer

collections for several years and was one of 30 volunteers on local street collection

sites. "The Association is extremely grateful to those people who so kindly gave their

time to assist, and also to the Cambridge community, who, as usual, were very

Convincing liars rewarded

David Cooney presents Ohaupo’s Amy Martin with her award as the second place-getter in the

2016 Cooney Insurance Short Story Competition. PHOTO: EMMA JAMES/FAIRFAX NZ.

EMMA JAMES

The winners of the 2016 CooneyInsurance Short Story Competition wereannounced at last week’s opening of theAutumn Festival, and three women wererewarded for their ‘convincing lies’.

That was this year’s theme – one thatproved popular with 89 entries in fromaround the country.

First place and $1000 went to Auck-land’s Ria Masae with her short storyPorcelain.

Unable to attend the prizegiving, shepenned a letter of thanks which was readout during the evening by Autumn Festi-val committee member Alan Milton.

In it, she said she had not won a shortstory competition before.

‘‘When the lovely Julie [Epps] rang toinform me ... that my story had earnedfirst place, my squeals of astonishmentand delight were genuine,’’ she wrote.‘‘Julie’s eardrums can attest to that

‘‘I’m sure I speak for many writers, and aspiring writers, when I say we arealways appreciative of literary avenuesthat not only offer spaces where we aremotivated to challenge and experimentwith our creativity, but also where weare given a sense of fulfilment when weare acknowledged for our craft.

‘‘Know that I am utterly grateful andhumbled that my story Porcelain wasacknowledged in such high favour forsuch a rewarding prize.’’

Ohaupo’s Amy Martin won $500 forher second place win with her storyGood, and in third place was MelanieDixon from Christchurch with her storyThe Albatross. She won $250.

David Cooney’s business CooneyInsurance has been sponsoring the shortstory competition for the past threeyears. He said it continues to grow – lastyear there were 70 entries, and this yearthere were 89.

‘‘One of the pleasing aspects is thenumber of young people entering ... it’sgood to see the youth joining the compe-

tition,’’ he said.‘‘The Autumn Festival is growing

every year. It has become part of Cam-bridge and a lot of people in the com-munity look forward to the eventhappening every year.’’

David said he had read 80 per cent ofthis year’s entries, and enjoyed the‘‘interesting works’’.

Giant insect creation for teacherEMMA JAMES

Peter Ennis is leaving Cambridge Middle School, but doing so in style by leaving behind a giant insect he made with his

room 11 class.

A Cambridge Middle School class-room has built a giant wire insectto demonstrate what they havelearned about ‘mini beasts’.

Peter Ennis’ room 11 classwere planning to build it over twoterms, but had to rush to completeit before their teacher’s departurelast Friday.

Ennis has worked at the schoolfor five years, but is leaving tojoin Mahurangi College in Wark-worth.

The giant insect is not the onlybig project Ennis has headed.

Last year his class created amassive globe, and in previousyears he has done a large-scalesolar system and a human bodyfor which the children made theorgans.

The insect was the hands-onaspect of their mini beasts pro-gramme, where students studiedinvertebrates and placed the minibeasts into different categories. They looked at insects, spidersand scorpions.

‘‘The idea was to get them read-ing about it in their readinglessons ... they were doing the sci-ence of it in their science lessons,’’he said.

‘‘We wanted to show parentsthat we could have some funwhile still learning. There was alot of working in teams, andteams working with other teamsto problem-solve.’’

He described the CMS childrenas ‘‘wonderful to teach’’ and saidhe was sad to leave. Studentsbrought him an array of cakesand cards on his last day.

‘‘It’s been really sweet actually.I didn’t realise they appreciatedmy teaching that much.

‘‘I try to treat them like youngadults and then they step up.Some of them have some amazingabilities and potential when theyget the chance to show it,’’ he said, adding that one of his 12-year-oldstudents could write better thanhe could.

He wasn’t planning on leavingpart way through the year, butwhen his wife was offered a job upnorth they couldn’t turn it down.

Ennis said he was thankful tothe school for allowing him thefreedom to run his ownprogrammes like the insect.

Council looksat cyclingroad strategyCycling will be back on theagenda next month, when WaipaDistrict Council considers adistrict-wide draft cycling strat-egy.

Council and community rep-resentatives developed the strat-egy to provide a blueprint forfuture road and off-road cyclinginitiatives.

Council agreed last June tospend $1.2 million on cyclewaysand walkways, ring-fenced largelyfor initiatives on the western sideof the district. But manager strat-egy and community relations JoIreland said the work wentbeyond that – it aims to ensurethat the district gets the best poss-ible ‘‘bang for its buck’’.

‘‘The strategy is about ensur-ing we have the right type ofcycleways in the right place. Wedon’t have unlimited money.Stakeholders are clear thereneeds to be a strategic and long-term approach to our investmentin cycleways.’’

The strategy is still beingfinalised and will be presented onMay 3. It recognises cycling’sincreasing economic value andwidespread appeal.

The draft strategy hasconsidered a range of potentialcycling routes and will be puttingforward a series of recommenda-tions.

How muchprotein do I need?

For vegetarians or vegans, almonds and some other nuts are a good source of protein.

Ask Dr Libby

Email your questions for Dr Libby [email protected] note, only a selection ofquestions can be answered.

Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY

I think I’m lacking in protein, Ieat a relatively balanced dietand include meat but I read it’sdifficult to get enough protein. What are your thoughts on this? With thanks – Susie.

Hi Susie. Protein is anessential macronutrient. Itsupplies us energy, helps ourbodies recover and is a criticalpart of our immune system.Proteins are composed of aminoacids, which are the buildingblocks of muscle and other bodyproteins.

In the Western world it’s prettydifficult to become proteindeficient if you eat a varied dietconsisting of whole foods.

The reasons you may not begetting enough protein are fairlystraightforward such as, notconsuming enough food ingeneral (low energy/calorierestrictive diet), you’re followinga restricted diet such as avegetarian or vegan diet, or if youhave some digestive systemsproblems. If it is the latter, you

may not absorb the amino acidsfrom your proteins foodseffectively. If you don’t eatenough food, your body may nothave enough amino acids forbuilding muscles, immunity, andhealthy hair, skin and nails etc.

Science currently suggeststhat the average person needs toconsume somewhere between 0.5and 1 gram of protein perkilogram of body weight. Onaverage, this suggests that for aperson who weighs 70kg, thatwould be about 55 grams ofprotein per day.

But consuming ‘‘adequate’’amounts of protein depends on anumber of factors including: yourphysical activity, age, currentmuscle mass or current state ofhealth (particular medicalconditions can require higher orlower consumptions of protein).Furthermore, nothing in natureis 100 per cent protein. Manypeople have been misinformedabout how much protein theyactually need for optimal health.

I’m a health coach and I wantedto know what your top threehealth tips would be for anyonewanting to lead a healthierlifestyle? Thanks, Chrystal.

Hi Chrystal. It’s difficult tochoose just three – but Ithink these tips are great foranyone wanting to improvetheir health and wellbeing,regardless of their current healthstatus;

1. Instead of focusing on eating

less of something that isn’t goodfor you, focus on eating morewhole real food.

2. Become breath aware. A lotof people live on adrenalin and it

can cause a host of problems.Diaphragmatic breathing lowersstress hormones more effectivelythan anything.

3. Stay in touch with what agift life is. When we feel gratefulwe can’t be stressed.

Wakeboarder aims for worldsEMMA JAMES

Nick Beale had a nasty wakeboarding accident, but that hasn’t stopped him from aiming for world championships next

year.

After a gnarly wakeboarding acci-dent last year, Karapiro Water SkiClub member Nick Beale is backon the water and aiming for aworld title.

He heads for America nextmonth to train in preparation fornext year’s world championshipsin Spain.

Beale has been wakeboardingfor 15 years, but had to take abreak after he ‘‘basically got acookie cutter to the leg’’ in Febru-ary last year.

He was riding a jump slidewhen he slipped through the gapand into the second rail, resultingin a compound fracture of thetibia and fibula.

For two weeks he wasn’tallowed to sit upright and couldn’tput weight on it for more than amonth. He wasn’t sure how wellhe would walk again.

‘‘I lost a lot of weight and I hada blood transfusion but I had abad reaction to it so I was veryweak and pale for a while,’’ hesaid.

Despite the odds, only ninemonths later he was back on theboard – but he has been taking iteasy as he still needs to rebuildthe muscle.

‘‘The last thing I want to do isgo through months of recovery toinjure myself again.

‘‘I’ve really had to adjust myriding style to have two thirds of

my weight on my good leg and onethird of my weight on my badleg,’’ he said.

He doesn’t think he’s lost anyconfidence, but his first test willbe at his first rail jumping compe-tition.

‘‘Sports Med Physio said I’mthe one they’ve had the most

appointments with,’’ Bealelaughed.

When he’s in the US, he will bebased in Orlando to learn somenew tricks.

He first got into wakeboardingwhen his uncle bought a boat. Hestarted taking it more seriouslywhen he bought a boat himself,

and has been competing for aboutfour years.

Now he ranks 9th in New Zea-land in the open men category.

He is hoping to raise money forhis trip to Orlando.

This year marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme which was fought from July to November 1941 near the Somme River in France. It was there that the majority of New Zealanders were killed or wounded during World War I, and where New Zealand experienced its worst day in military history in terms of loss of life. The Somme took a huge toll on the 15,000 members of the New Zealand Division, with roughly one in seven killed, and about four in 10 wounded. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. Over 12 days in May 1941, New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops tried to fight off a huge German airborne assault. The battle ended with the evacuation to Egypt of the bulk of the Allied force. Also marking its 75th anniversary this year is the sinking of the HMS Neptune, on December 19, 1941, off the Libyan coast. Of the 757 lives lost, 150 were New Zealanders. The light show on Sunday night will also feature poppies. Both the Cambridge clock tower and the cenotaph will be lit in red, toning in with the

colour of the poppy.White crosses will also feature adjacent to the cenotaph, representing servicemen and women from Cambridge who served in theatres of war, but never returned.

Van Tuyl and Double J win at KihikihiDIANA DOBSON

BALLOON

Katharine Van Tuyl and Double JSunshine sealed their win in theWaipa Home of Champions CIC3*with a stunning clear round at theKihikihi International HorseTrial this month.

The two, who this year alsoshowjumped to grand prix level, were nearly 10 penalty pointsclear of the second-placed DannieLodder (Auckland) aboard Toma-hawk II, with Donna Edwards-Smith (Matangi) and Mr HokeyPokey moving back up theleaderboard to take third place.

Van Tuyl was over the moonwith her win, which came a dec-ade after she last competed atKihikihi.

She was the only rider to goclear over the Gerrit Beker-designed showjumping course, albeit garnering two time faults.

But Van Tuyl was as cool as acucumber as she guided her chest-nut to victory.

‘‘I was getting jumped right outof the saddle out there ... he wasjust jumping bigger and bigger. He was just awesome.

‘‘This is a class I have alwayswanted to win but everything gets

sold, so this is just fantastic,’’ saidVan Tuyl, who is now consideringa start at the 4* in Adelaide inNovember.

Lodder had two rails down –one for her and the other for thehorse – and picked up two timefaults, but was very happy to takesecond place.

Edwards-Smith was rapt tocome up onto the podium.

She and her palomino hadbeen leading after the dressage, but a conservative cross countrysaw her slip to fifth. She had a fallin the CIC2* cross country, butstill rode Mr Hokey Pokey in the3*.

For the showjumping, she putboots on the horse making for arather challenging ride whichsaw them take a rail and add asingle time fault to their tally.

It was the 20th birthday for theKihikihi International HorseTrial and tributes were paid tothose who had worked so hard tocreate an award-winning event.

Cambridge trainers dominant across NZ

GEORGE SIMONRacing

Talk about an embarrassment ofriches.

Cambridge-trained horsesdominated the three New Zealandvenues last Saturday.

Tauranga saw Cambridgehorses win six of the eight raceson the programme. Battle Timegot the ball rolling in his fresh uprun this preparation.

The Tim and Margaret Carter-trained three year old broke hismaiden with a tenacious victory.

It’s Bianca scored for AnneHerbert in the following race. Rid-den by Trudy Thornton, It’sBianca sat outside the leader

before kicking clear over the con-cluding stages.

She scored comfortably, as didMeeska Mooska in the next race.Trained by Graham Thomas andNick Smith, Meeska Mooskadashed away to win by three-and-a-half lengths.

Inastride capped off somerecent good form with a win forthe powerful Baker/Forsmancombination.

In the next race, Blizzardproved too strong for race favour-ite Spoke To Carlo.

It was a good training feat fromEmma Lee and David Browne tohave Blizzard ready after anenforced lay off.

Capping off the day at Tau-ranga was the CatherineCameron-trained Light Shadow. After settling last, Light Shadowoverpowered his rivals to score

for apprentice Shaun McKay.The local winning spree con-

tinued at Hawkes Bay onSaturday. Tony Pike collected adouble with Chenille and Sum-mer’s Day both successful.

Chenille justified her favourit-ism winning the feature race, theHawkes Bay Gold Cup. The otherCambridge winner at Hawkes Baywas impressive two year old,Bonneval.

Cambridge’s sporting heroes and

heroines have shone in and out of

the water recently.

Starting with the youngest, few

could fail to be impressed by

10-year-old BMX star, Leila Walker,

who won her third consecutive

world champion title in Belgium.

The Hautapu School student

took out her age-group final in the

UCI World Championships at

Zolder in Belgium – claiming her

third World No 1 Plate after wins at

Auckland in 2013, and in Rotterdam

last year.

Another young Cambridge

rider, Lily Greenough came close in

her division, ending fourth in her

eight years category. Bennett

Greenough kept the family flag fly-

ing by coming a respectable fifth in

the 12 years age group.

Still with BMX – and the name

Walker – Cambridge’s Sarah

Walker came back from injury in

style. Nine months after her last

major international, Sarah Walker

has grabbed a bronze medal in the

Super Time Trial at the UCI BMX

World Championship in Belgium

on Saturday.

The London Olympic silver med-

allist crashed heavily in United

States last September, and has

spent nine months recovering and

rebuilding from a broken arm and

head injuries.

Our athletes also enjoyed suc-

cess in the water, with paralympian

Nikita Howarth winning two gold

medals at the IPC Swimming World

Championships in Glasgow.

Her win brought the New Zea-

land para-swimming team medal

tally to 13 – including seven gold,

four silver and two bronze.

Howarth’s first Glaswegian gold

came when defending her title in

the 200m individual medley, a race

in which she attained gold in

Canada in 2013. She followed up

that win in Glasgow with a second

gold, this time in the women’s S7

50m butterfly.

She also beat her own Oceania

record for the 100m breaststroke.

Now 16, Howarth has her eyes

firmly on next year’s Olympics in

Rio de Janiero.

Winning medals on the water

rather than in it are some of our top

rowers.

It was announced on Sunday

that three medals and a world best

time were the highlights of a four-

medal regatta for New Zealand at

the 2015 Under-23 World Champion-

ships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The women’s lightweight double

of Zoe McBride and Jackie Kiddle

won gold in a record time, while the

men’s quad, women’s double and

men’s coxed four claimed silver on

the last day of competition.

We havemore on their

efforts on page 28
