Dear Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2014 Supporter,

Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD) has been an exciting campaign since itsinception in 1990. Started by a group of social advocates who believed that too manyyoung people were moving out of home with no where to go, the day has since growninto a national celebration of young peoples resilience.

For us, Youth Homelessness Matters Day started because of young people like Trent.Trent has Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety issues. As he did not want

to drag his two year old brother, nine year old sister and grandmother down, he decidedto run away. At rst, Trent did not want to ask for help because he was told that refugeswere not great. When he nally decided to call a service, they did not have any bed forhim. A week later he was given a spot and he loved the place: even nicer than mostcolleges and everyone is so nice he said! Trent could get support for his mental healthissues and fells must better now.

Youth homelessness is something that affects most people, whether its a parent wholets their childs friend crash on the couch for a couple nights or an Aunty who hears ofher niece being kicked out. Yet many people dont know the impact this issue has on our

young people or what to do to help.

We do this work for people like Trent, who was one of the lucky ones. We see this as agood story. For many others, the school counselor doesnt know what to do or doesntcare. Most of the time there arent any vacancies at youth accommodation services andyoung people have to move far from their childhood town. For others, they hear rumoursabout youth refuges and are scared that they will just end up becoming a good-for-nothing bad kid.

This campaign aims to address these problems. Well probably never live in a societywhere no young person has to leave home early (although that would be nice) and we areaware of the fact that family breakdown is sometimes inevitable. However, young peopleshould not have to face homelessness and discrimination when their home life doesntwork out. They shouldnt be faced with a life of disadvantage just because they weredealt a bad hand and born to imperfect parents or a broken family.

We look forward to creating brighter futures for the young people who have facedhomelessness and showing them that they have the power and opportunity to becomewhatever they put their mind to.

I wasnt in a good environment at my Mums or my Dads.I dont really like to talk about it. Dad was mean... I stayedat a friends house for two nights, and then we rang DOCS(Department of Community Services) for help. When they pickedme up they suggested I go to a foster home or a youth refuge. I

didnt care so they dropped me off at a crisis refuge.

It was really scary at rst, but I got over that. The service hashelped me heaps since then. I feel safe here.

I have graduated from Year 12 and I just dropped off my resumeat a place for part-time work.. When I grow up I want to becomea youth worker. I like what they do for people and that theyrealways there when you need them. I want to go to TAFE andthen to Uni and come back here [to my service] to work. .

Tertiary homelessnessis when people are forced, due to circumstance,

to stay in accommodation that is inadequate and below the minimumstandard. This typically refers to people living in caravan parks or inboarding houses where they do not hold a secure lease or any rights as aresident.

Primary homelessnessis what people typically refer to as rough sleepingand imagine as the old man on the park bench. While this is the smallestportion of homelessness, it is the most public and talked about within ourcommunity.

Couch surfing.Secondary homelessnessis what is referred to when someone says couchsurng (if youre talking about homelessness...if youre discussingEuropean travel plans it probably means something different). Couchsurng isnt as cool as it sounds. It is the experience of moving aroundtemporarily on peoples couches, whether they be friends, family, foes orstrangers.

    Below the line.

#1The rst and most common way young people experience homelessness is

    couch surng.

It s not all sleeping rough.

The aim of this campaign is to break the common stereotypes that areassociated with youth homelessness, young people who experiencedisadvantage and youth refuges.

Stereotypes are currently a major inhibitor to young people accessingsupport. The stigma attached to homelessness means that many youngpeople deny their experience and put themselves into very dangeroussituations instead of seeking help.

The campaign also aims to engage government and corporate sectors

to resource specialist youth homelessness services, also known as youthrefuges, which provide young people with the help they need in order to getback on their feet.

    Host an event

    1. Pick a sizeSmall- Small events are most appropriate for time-poor and new eventhosts. Small events can be a great way to share the stories of young peoplewith your friends and family while also having a great laugh, dinner or BBQ.

Small events typically require only three weeks planning and no outsourcingor cost.

Medium- If youre a social buttery and thrive at hosting satisfying andenjoyable experiences for your networks and their friends, a medium sizeevent could be just for you. Small businesses can also be a great t formedium events, in that they require little commitment and give employeesthe chance to socialise while giving back. Medium events require some prior

planning, usually 2-1.5 months. Depending on the type of event, the willrequire some outside negotiations and partnerships.

Large- Go big or go home right? For those with either a large event budgetor great networks for sponsorship, a large event provides the opportunityto chance the face of youth homelessness in Australia. By hosting a publicawareness event, fun run or fundraising gala, your efforts could not onlyimprove the ability of our community to recognise young people in crisis,

but it could also have a ow on affect that impacts young people for yearsto come. Planning a large event will take at least four months planning andrequire several planners who can devote signicant time to the event.

Hosting an event can be an exciting and easy way to connect your networksand community with the information they need to ensure no young personis left without a place to go. Since the start of YHMD, community eventshave been the core way parents, neighbours and community members learnhow to identify, address and refer a young person in need.

This kit includes a step-to-step guide for planning a small, medium and largeevent. The separate media kit also lists key campaign messages and brand-ing guidelines for event hosts so we can leverage the hard work and benev-

olence of our many event hosts into a large, consistent call to action.

    2. Choose the type

    3. Identify time & locationLocation, location, location. The key to any successful event is hosting itat a time that ts guests schedules and location. Although YHMD 2014falls on a Wednesday in April, this might not be an appropriate day tohost an event if youre inviting mainly people with M-F 9-5 jobs. Instead, why not host your event the weekend before, perhaps in the park if thatssomewhere your networks frequent in April.

If youre a business or organisation hosting an event for your employees,Wednesday afternoon could be a perfect time to help them get over theweek hump in a fun way.

When deciding when and where take into account your guests habits andlifestyle, and the type of event your hosting (a family fun run probablyshouldnt be held at 8pm on a Saturday night).

    4. Find helpersIf youre hosting anything larger than a backyard BBQ or potluck dinner, itsbest to enlist helpers as soon as possible. Helpers are typically people whoyou enjoy spending time with and who agree to help out according to theirstrengths. We all love helping out friends so enlisting helpers can strengthenyour relationships and provide your friends with a satisfying activity outsideof the daily routine.

Identify how many helpers youll need to have a no-stress event & identifywhy youre seeking their help when you ask if their interested.

After choosing size, the next step to decide what kind of event you wouldlike to put on. When deciding the type of the event keep in mind your targetguests (what would they like to do?, where are they most likely to do it and

how can it be most satisfying for them to contribute to raising awarenessand ending youth homelessness?)

Also think about your resources, while you might want to host a eatingcompetition in the Sydney Star Casino for free, is it realistic? Identify whatresources you have and what potential strengths or resources you couldleverage from your network.
