CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 3, Week 6, 24th August 2017
Camperdown
From Mexico to the Great Barrier Reef, from France to Magic Faraway Lands, students and staff certainly escaped to places near and far to celebrate Book Week at Camperdown College on Tuesday 22nd August.
It was an amazing sight at the Clock Tower as students read their favourite story to a buddy, dressed as somewhere that they’d love to escape to with a book. Students were read Home In The Rain (2017 picture story book winner) by Librarian Barb Purcell before listening to Councillor Ruth Gstrein’s favourite book Dr Dog.
Thank you to our parents who helped with so many creative costumes and took part in the celebrations at the Clock Tower.
Judy Downie, Julie Nelson & Barb Purcell Special Events Coordinators & Librarian
The Clock Tower was the perfect
backdrop for Book Week celebrations.
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
In this edition of the newsletter we pay
tribute to our dynamic Education
Support staff comprising the integration
aides, wellbeing personnel and
specialist support staff who work
alongside our teachers to enhance
educational opportunities and outcomes
for students.
The office is generally the first point of contact for new
families and visitors and the go to service centre for
students, staff and parents. Our two Office Managers Amy
Stephenson at the Junior Campus and Christine Esh at the
Senior Campus provide administrative support for our
principal class team and teachers while anticipating and
responding to the daily operational needs of our wider
community, and we are very appreciative of all that they
do.
Our technical staff including our Business Manager Mardi
Johnson, Information Technology specialists Kelum
Fernando and Marc Heffernan, Science Laboratory
Technician Linda Morgan, Library and Food Technicians
Pauline Van Dijk and Sharyn Arnold, and Maintenance
Officer Don Dowell provide the expert knowledge and
skills to ensure that our school finances, facilities and
equipment remain in an excellent state and are well used to
enrich our students’ educational experiences. These staff
are accustomed to managing competing demands and the
pressure of time and their collective efforts are evident in
the ongoing development of our school. Jodie Abbott has
recently joined our staff team as Alumni Manager and her
work will open up future opportunities for Camperdown
College students by tapping into the experiences and
expertise of past students of the school.
Many of our Education Support staff provide assistance to
students within and outside of the classroom, ensuring that
individual needs are met and that all students have the
opportunity to participate and thrive. Students, teachers
and families appreciate the efforts and significant
contribution of our committed and capable language
assistant Suci Maharani and integration aides and
classroom assistants Dave Wilkinson, Kerrie Hill, Dianne
Blackley, Narelle Rasmussen, Bill McGann, Jenny O'Neil,
Sally Sutterby and Ryan Smith.
Providing pastoral care and specialised health and
wellbeing support are our additional trained personnel
including Student Wellbeing Officer Kathryn Robertson
and School Chaplain Frank Tuppin, both of whom work
with students at the Junior and Senior Campus, and
Adolescent Health Nurse Claire Blackstock. The services
and support provided by our wellbeing team are integral to
the participation and success of our diverse mix of
students. A key aspect of their roles is connecting students
and families to additional support services outside of the
school to ensure that mental and physical health needs are
addressed as a precursor to school attendance and success.
Tailored learning programs delivered by our teaching team
are strengthened by the combined efforts of our many
Education Support staff members, with much of this work
occurring behind the scenes. The school's strong financial
position, increasing enrolments and enhanced facilities all
reflect the absolute commitment of our Education Support
staff team as co-contributors to our ongoing school
improvement journey, alongside our dedicated teachers,
School Councillors, Parents and Friends, students and
families.

Congratulations:
Angus Gordon, Charlie Conheady, Jack Helmore and Henry Hocking who made it into the preliminary final
for Camperdown U/16 football but missed out on a grand final berth by 2 points.
Ellie Walsh – third place in the Warrnambool District League Best and Fairest.
Progress Reports:
Six week progress reports will open on Compass tomorrow. These reports provide additional information to parents
(from mid-cycle and end of cycle feedback) on learning attributes of persistence, behaviour, preparation and
organisation and progress.
Vietnam Veterans Day:
Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18th August every year. The date was chosen to
commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. This year we commemorate the 51st
Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. To commemorate this, Katie Cecchini-Baxter has spent many hours putting together a display
as a tribute to two ex-students who fought and died in this war – Ian Scott and Ralph Niblett.
Later Years Information Session:
Students in Year 9/10 participated in a Later Years Information session last week where they looked at the different programs on offer
for their later years of schooling. Students should be discussing these options at home with parents and further exploring options
during MIPS (Managed Individual Pathways) with Mrs Maskell. Key dates for course selection are:
Year 11 to 12 2018 – subject selections due tomorrow
Year 10 to 11 2018 – VCE/VCAL choice and initial subject selections due Thursday 30th August
Year 9 – 10 2018 – interest in VETis, SBA or Step Up to VCE subject to be expressed by Thursday 30th August
Debutante Ball:
Only a few more sleeps to go for the twenty-six excited students who will be presented at our bi-annual debutante ball. The students
have certainly polished their dancing skills and are looking forward to the evening. A reminder to parents that the boys’ suits are now
at Laff’s and need to be tried on so that any last minute alterations can be made. Tickets are available at the Senior Campus Office for
those who would like to come along.
Power of Engineering Excursion:
Eight Year 9 students spent last Thursday at Timboon participating in a range of interactive workshops designed to give them an idea
of engineering as a profession. The workshops showcased a variety of engineering disciplines, guest speakers from the industry and
exposed students to a variety of engineering projects. Thanks to Mr Brooks for accompanying the students and to Mrs Maskell for the
organisation.
School for Student Leadership:
Both Ms Bloomfield and Mrs Maskell have linked up with the School for Student Leadership students via polycom over the past
week. The students spent time discussing their plans for a community project on Mt Leura with Ms Bloomfield and Mrs Maskell took
the students through their Later Years information session. At the end of her session, the Year 9 students on this campus were given
the opportunity to have a chat with their peers here at the Senior Campus. The students are certainly having a most enjoyable time and
learning lots along the way.

Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Book Week:
Reading offers great places to which our imagination allows us to escape. This year’s theme, Escape to Everywhere,
saw our students escape to a variety of places including: Once Upon a Time – students dressed up as princes,
princess’, fairies and the Faraway Tree; others escaped to the land of Superheroes, dressing up as Superman, Batman
and Spiderman; and some students opted for escaping into their favourite book character with several Where’s Wally
and Harry Potter characters appearing. Thank you to all families who went to the effort to dress their children up. It
was great to see such creativity at our Book Week Parade held in The Avenue on Tuesday. Students enjoyed sharing
their favourite books with each other as well as listening to our Librarian, Mrs Purcell read the winner of the 2017 picture story book,
Home in the Rain written by Bob Graham. We were fortunate enough to have Councillor Ruth Gstrein read her favourite book Dr
Dog to our students also. The week-long celebrations also includes a whole school reading before lunch each day, with teachers
sharing their favourite books with students. Thank you to Barb Purcell, Judy Downie and Julie Nelson for organising the week. Our
students delight in dressing up and hopefully will hold fond memories of these special days for many years to come.
Kindergarten to Prep Transition:
Our Kindergarten children were artists for a day as they took part in their third transition visit today. Under the direction of Miss
Smithwick, the children used a variety of mediums and tools to create various patterns and shapes on their very own canvas! Over the
last three weeks, the children have had the experience of participating in literacy, library and art lessons. Thank you to Mrs Tolland
for her excellent coordination of our transition program and Miss Edwards, Mrs Purcell and Ms Smithwick for planning and teaching
exciting activities which have been thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Hello everyone, my name is Charlie Tickner and I am a Year 9 student from Camperdown College. I came to the School
for Student Leadership to better my individuality and to become a better person. This school provides a range of
different opportunities that can help improve and build your leadership and social skills. My highlights so far would
have to of been the bridge building. For bridge building, each expedition group had to try and build a 15m bridge from
one side of a field to another. We were successful in the building of the bridge and the first group to accomplish the task.
There are a variety of different roles and duties that accompany every student that is involved in each term. Student
leader is one of the biggest roles that every student does at least twice whilst being here. Being student leader means that
you have to ensure everyone is on time to meals, class and headcounts. Depending on the class, occasionally you may
have to run the class or activities. As student leader you have to come up with community issues and personal goals that
you want to complete and solve. Student leader is a big role and the student leaders change daily, there are 2 Student
leaders a day. Duties here are also a big part of the daily routine we have here at the Snowy River Campus. Each day
everyone is given a different duty to do. The duties consist of: breakfast set up and clean-up, bathroom clean-up,
morning tea set up and clean-up, Lunch set up and clean-up, afternoon tea set up and clean-up, dinner set up and clean-
up and chook duty. The amount of people on each duty differ from 2 to 4 people.
Every student has to be involved in at least one committee here. Committees help with a variety of different things.
Some of the committees are: The Sports Committee – they help with setting up sporting activities every Thursday, The
LLP committee – The LLP or Local Learning Project committee run the LLP day that us students attend to help teach
primary school students about differentiating topics about the local area, and the other committee is the Documentary
Committee – The Documentary Committee has the job of making a short film on our time being here at the Snowy River
School for Student Leadership.
Meals and food for the camp has a certain time routine to follow, we get 5 meals a day, with each
meal being held at certain times of the day, for example: breakfast (6:30am – 7:30am), morning
tea (10:30am – 11:00am), lunch (12:30pm – 1pm), afternoon tea (4:00pm) and dinner (6:00pm).
School for Student leadership is a really good opportunity that I would highly recommend
taking. You learn different life skills and this school teaches you things about yourself that you
might not have already known. If you are looking to improve you leadership and social skills, I
would suggest doing this camp.
Charlie Ticker, Year 9 Student
Progress reports open tomorrow on Compass.

Kindergarten to School Transition Today saw a third visit to Camperdown
College by our local kindergarten children
as part of our Kindergarten to School
Transition Program. Eager kindergarten
children participated in a very hands on
and messy fun art activity with Ms
Smithwick in our Art Room, making very
impressive canvas art with homemade
painting utensils. Last Thursday, the
students were treated to a delightful story
by Mrs Purcell about Gary the Pigeon who
also made an appearance on a lasting
bookmark that the kindergarten children
decorated as a wonderful keepsake to their
schooling experience at Camperdown
College.
A big thank you to Ms Smithwick and Mrs Purcell for their preparation
and delivery of some memorable lessons for our 2017 kindergarten
children.

Year 5/6T Big Write:
Topic: In deep…
Text type: Recount .
In Deep Water: Ashley groaned as she lifted the fan up, and out of the cupboard then turned it on. It was 35 degrees and Ashley and her sister Maddy were told to stay inside until their parents got home. Which would be another hour away so they had to do something. “I’m so bored” Maddy complained. “So am I” Ashley agreed. Ashley thought for a moment, all sorts of ideas popped into her head but she settled on one. “Lets take the boat out on the lake” Ashley suggested. “But we aren’t allowed to go outside” Maddy said. “C’mon” Ashley said with a sigh. “Ok” Maddy finally agreed.
The two sisters packed a bag with their bathers, towels, drinks and some snacks. Then they went outside and got a paddleboard for when they went out into the lake. After that Ashley and Maddy hopped into the boat and got going because their parents would be home in 40 minutes. Five minutes later the engine stopped and the boat broke down. They realised that they had ran out of fuel. Maddy suggested that they should get out the paddleboard and paddle back to their house to get fuel.
When they reached their house they went into the shed and got out the fuel. Maddy and Ashley got back on the paddleboard and went back to the boat. They got the boat going. They got home just in time before their parents both home. “That was close” said Maddy.
In Deep Sleep: “Mum I’m going to bed now” I said. I got my PJs on. My Mum came into my bedroom and tucked me in. We said goodnight to each other and I fell asleep… I was dreaming… I get up and get dressed in to my school clothes. Mum said “Are you ready for school”. My homework was on the bench, so I got it and my lunch and put it in my school bag. Then the bus pulled up and I got on. When I was at school I did some Maths and English. The day was over and I hopped in the bus and went home. When I got home, I went on my ipad and got on YouTube. Then all of a sudden police were raiding the house. I was so scared. So I went to the dryer and hid. I heard the police go in my room and break something. I wasn’t impressed. Then the police opened the dryer door and grabbed me. They handcuffed me and took me to the police car. In the car I asked the police officer what was going on. He was silent and then said “You are a killer.” What?? I did not know what he was on about. So I stayed quiet until I got to the police station. I was put in a jail cell and I hated it because I didn’t do it! The police said “You will be going to court tomorrow, young lady.” “You’ve got to believe me, I didn’t do it.” The police walked away. I sat and cried and cried, I was so sad. The next day I was in a car going to court. I was in court, I was found guilty. 25 years in jail! I was only in there for an hour. I heard an explosion and someone grabbed me and got me out of the jail and threw me into a car. We sped away but the police weren’t far behind us. We saw a barn and went into it. Quickly we shut the barn door but the police got there just in time. I was tasered… and suddenly I was asleep. Thank goodness this was only a dream.
