CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 4, Week 8, 28th November 2019

Camperdown

Last Thursday, we welcomed the newest members of our College community; twenty-six Prep children who will form the class of 2020. They eagerly entered the classroom hand in hand with their families and were surprised to find this year’s Prep students there to greet them. Our current Prep students thoroughly enjoyed reading and sharing their favourite games with our new students and families who then enjoyed their first experience on the playground.

After returning to the classroom ready for learning, a special blue Warm and Fuzzy was passed through the class for students displaying their best listening. They watched and listened quietly as Miss Edwards and Miss Smith read The Gruffalo, sequenced pictures to retell the story and then created their own special Gruffalo hat which had many similar features to the character in the text, including big orange eyes. Soon enough, it was time for everyone to say goodbye and the children excitedly bounced towards to door to meet their families whilst wearing their Gruffalo hats. We look forward to meeting our new Prep students again on Step Up Day, Tuesday 10th December from 9.30am – 2.30pm.

From the Principal’s Desk…

Sometimes you just have to put first

things first! I would like to extend my

personal congratulations to Leura

House Captains Leilah Bateman and

Lewis Regan for leading their fine

Leura compatriots to victory in the

Junior Campus weekly house shield

last week. The momentous occasion of

Leura taking out the house shield twice

in November (after what can only be

described as an extended dry spell) was celebrated

enthusiastically at our Friday assembly, with terrific

sportsmanship shown by Bullen

Merri and Manifold students who

also appeared to be weeping with

vicarious joy! Thank you to those

quick thinking staff and parents

who captured the moment on film.

The yellow shorts have not had

much of an airing this year and the

shorts and I were both very

pleased to be proud Leura

ambassadors.

It has also been pleasing to share the

following news with our school community this week. We

congratulate Mrs Jacinta Tolland who has been appointed to

the acting Junior Campus Assistant Principal position for

Term 1, and Taylah Best and Charlie Tickner who have been

selected as our 2020 Senior School Captains. We also

congratulate Stacey James, Olivia Maskell and Zoe

Wilkinson on their appointments to the Senior Leadership

team, as Performing Arts, Sports and Student Voice Captains

respectively. The full contingent of House Captains will be

announced in the next newsletter, and the process to appoint

Junior Campus student leaders will begin next week with

interviews involving our seven eager candidates. In keeping

with tradition, our current Junior School Captains Stella

Horspole and Finn Tolland will join Mr Bennett and myself

on the panel.

Step Up Day on Tuesday 10th December will see many new

faces at each campus – amongst students and staff. Our

primary teaching team will expand with the addition of new

staff members Ashlee Carrigan-Walsh, Madison Helmore,

Lewis Oborne, Kim Robertson and Polly Smith; while

secondary teachers Sarah Oakley, Jenna Richardson and

Sarah Magnusson will join our Senior Campus team to

contribute to our maths, PE and humanities programs. We

expect to finalise a small number of remaining vacancies by

the end of next week. Step Up Day will give all of our

primary students an opportunity to spend time with their

2020 teacher and new classmates, as well as giving our new

Prep and Year 7 students an extended transition experience.

Ms Cherie Kilpatrick, Principal

Please return all raffle tickets and money to the Junior or Senior Campus Office by Tuesday 10th December. The raffle will be drawn at

the Senior Campus Presentation Night on Tuesday 17th December.

Deakin Engineering Expo:

Engineering students from Deakin University conducted workshops with students in Year 7 – 9 on Tuesday.

The students engaged enthusiastically in the activities offered and enjoyed testing their creations and

competing against each other. Students had the opportunity to build and test, structures to withstand

earthquakes, a bridge to hold specific weight, a wind turbine to produce the maximum amount of energy

possible and to program a robot to stack bricks.

Year 12 Formal:

Our Year 12 Formal was held at the Five Star Function Centre on Friday night, 15th November. The dining

room was magically cosy and beautifully decorated thanks to Jodie Lucas, Tash Swayn and students who

worked tirelessly to prepare decorations and set up the venue. Darren Maskell prepared a scrumptious meal which was served by

Charlie Tickner, Olivia Maskell, Taylah Best and Sarah Delwig. College Principal Ms Kilpatrick and School Council President Jane

Bennett spoke to the students thanking them for their contributions to the College and provided them with wise advice for their

futures. Families who have ended their association with the school were presented with silver banksias and thanked for their support

of the College over many years. Teacher presentations were made to each student and were warmly received by both students and the

audience. Thanks must go to Year 12 Coordinator Ms Taylor for organising and conducting this special event.

Student Leadership Positions:

The past week has seen the continuation of the student leadership selection process. I had the pleasure of joining Ms Kilpatrick and

Ms Taylor on the interview panel. Students who were interviewed were outstanding and offered honest insight and ability to reflect on

past experiences whilst at the same time showing a vision for their future role. It is with great pleasure that I congratulate and

announce the following leadership positons (House Captain positions will be finalised in the next two weeks):

School Captains: Taylah Best and Charlie Tickner

Sports Captain: Olivia Maskell

Performing Arts Captain: Stacey James

Social Justice/Student Voice: Zoe Wilkinson

Corangamite Youth Fest:

Camperdown College will be strongly represented at the Corangamite Youth Fest tomorrow evening with the following student effort

being showcased:

Bus Shelter Boys (band): Tim Fagan, Daniel Nelson, Otto Leonard-Pekin, Ben Leonard-Pekin and Mathew Pineo.

Young Writers’ Group: Kristy Parsons, Aimee Bosanquet, Pauline Sheldrick, Hayley Cameron and Emalia Kirchheiner.

Cast of Grease.

Young Actor: Charlie Tickner

Winners of the Cheese My Own Creation competition: Stella Wickenton and Selvia Suson.

Step Up Day (state-wide transition day):

Just a reminder that we are holding Step Up Day on Tuesday 10th December. We will welcome our 2020 Year 7 students to the Senior

Campus from 9am – 3.15pm. Students are required to wear school uniform (if coming from another school, please wear your current

Year 6 uniform) and meet in the Library. Please bring a pencil case, drink and snacks. Lunch will be provided. Normal bus

arrangements apply.

Year 12 Step Up:

Year 11 exams were conducted last week. After the final exam on Friday morning the students enjoyed a walk to the botanical

gardens, a barbeque lunch and games. This proved to be a good way for the students to unwind after the stress of exams and recharge

their batteries in preparation for Step Up. Results of the Year 11 exams have been published on Compass. This week the Year 11

students have been participating in Year 12 Step Up activities. Students have gained a taste of what is to come in Year 12 and have

been set many tasks to complete over the holidays to prepare themselves for next year.

Year 10 Exams and Step Up:

The Year 10 exam program concludes tomorrow. Please note that all exam results will be published on Compass. The Step Up into

Year 11 program will be held next week. Students have been given a copy of the timetable.

Summer Interschool Sport Competition:

All students in Year 7 – 9 have been involved in the Summer Sports Competition today at various locations around the district.

Students were given the opportunity to play lawn bowls, soccer, volleyball, golf or girls’ football.

Booklists:

Booklists have been distributed to students. VCE students are encouraged to hand in second hand books to the Senior Campus Office

so that they can be sold. I strongly encourage parents of VCE students to contact Christine Esh before filling out their booklists as

many second hand books are available. Some second hand novels are also available for purchase for Year 7 – 10. Booklists must be

submitted by Tuesday 3rd December.

Elective Selections for 2020:

Students in Year 8/9 completed an expression of interest sheet to enable us to set up the electives which best suit the students’

interests for next year. Students have been notified of their elective selection.

Mobile Phone Ban:

Please remember that smart watches with mobile connectivity and mobile phones will be banned from the start of next year. Students

who need to bring a phone to school will be required to lock them away during the day and retrieve them at the end of the day.

Prep – Year 2 Excursion, Night In and Year 2 Sleepover:

There will be much excitement next week when our Prep – Year 2 students venture to Warrnambool to visit

Flagstaff Hill on Thursday. Students will be involved in a Traditional Make and Create session related to their

current Integrated Studies topic of Healthy Living. After Flagstaff Hill, students will be stopping at our local

fruit and vegetable shop in Terang to experience a specialty shop that promotes and facilitates a healthy diet.

Students will return to the Junior Campus at 3pm and begin their Night In activities after enjoying afternoon

tea. Students will participate in a range of activities at school before heading to Camperdown Playspace for a

barbeque dinner. After Prep and Year 1 students depart for home at 7pm, the Year 2 students will stay on for

their sleepover. I am sure there will be many stories for our students to share after such an exciting time!

JSC Dress to Impress with a touch of Sparkle Disco:

A reminder that our Junior School Council Disco will be held tomorrow evening at the AG Daws Hall from 6pm – 8pm. For those

who enjoy dressing up, the theme for the evening is Dress to Impress with a touch of Sparkle. JSC members will be selling drinks and

sweets throughout the evening (a maximum of $10 spending money is suggested) and DJ Misty will be pumping out the tunes.

Admission is $2 per student or $5 per family. Proceeds from the night will go towards purchasing books for the Junior Campus.

Parents are asked to complete and return a permission slip if their children are attending the event.

Prep – Year 2 Swimming:

Our Prep – Year 2 swimming program commenced last Monday, with our students travelling to the indoor pool in Kolora for an

intensive block of swimming lessons delivered by instructors from Jayson Lamb’s Splash Factory. Swimming is a vital skill for all

children, and this program will provide them with invaluable experiences, skills, knowledge and fun.

Library Books:

It’s that time of the year when we need to gather up all our library books at home and return them to school. We need all students to

check under their beds, in the bookshelf and behind the couch for any books that they have at home. We will still have library books

available in all classrooms until the end of the term but will not have any coming home in December.

Step Up Day:

All students will participate in the state-wide Step Up Day on Tuesday 10th December. Current students will spend the day in their

2020 classroom with their 2020 teacher and peers. Our 2020 Prep students will also join us from 9.30am – 2.30pm on this day whilst

our Year 6 students will make their way to their 2020 secondary schools.

Year 6 Graduation: The planning for the Year 6 Graduation is well underway, with the date set for Monday 16th December. A light meal will be shared

with students and teachers from 6.00pm, with the ceremony commencing at 7pm in the AG Daws Hall. All members of the

Camperdown College community are welcome to attend the ceremony.

Year 9/10 Indonesian Dinner As part of the current Year 9/10 Indonesian learning cycle, students invited their families along to a dinner and presentation

evening on Thursday 14th November. Year 9/10 students created a series of bilingual texts for the evening including an

invitation, menu and a presentation on one of Indonesia’s ceremonies or celebrations. First up families enjoyed a dinner of

bakwan jagung (corn fritters), lumpia (spring rolls), nasi goreng (fried rice), sate ayam (chicken skewers), krupuk (prawn

crackers), klepon (coconut balls) and biskuit pala (nutmeg biscuits) – all prepared by the Indonesian class. With full bellies, the

guests listened to bilingual presentations on various Indonesian ceremonies and celebrations and were later quizzed on their

retention of the information in a Kahoot. Congratulations to the Year 9/10 Indonesian class for all of their work in putting

together a successful evening and thank you to Mrs Grant, Sharyn and the College Café class for your assistance.
