Mobile Mathematics facilitates development

Mobile Mathematics provides

• Theory

• Examples

• Exercise

• Hints

• Tests

• Learner’s own activity/scores

• Learners’ comparing their activity/scores

locally/globally

• Collaboration spaces

• Teacher tutoring

• Peer-to-peer tutoring

• Competitions

Mobile Mathematics enables

teachers

• to manage learner participation

• to communicate with learners

• to motivate learners

• to monitor and assess learners’

achievement

• to access class relevant content

• to enrich teaching activities

Impact

• Learners competence score improved 14 %

• 82 % of the usage happens outside schools hours,

during holidays, weekends and mornings and

evenings

• Learners have better awareness of their maths

competences

• Teachers have better awareness of their learners’

competences

• More collaboration between learners and learners and

teachers

Mobile Mathematics enables

learners

• to access content and study

packages for grade10 and grade

11 mathematics

• to interact with others

• to participate and learn actively

• to collaborate on problem solving

• to motivate and be motivated

Project Start Date: 15.10.2008 in South Africa by the request

of Vice President.

Tight co-operation with Presidency and Department of

Education

2009:

6 schools, 300 learners and 12 teachers in South

Africa (in Western Cape, Gauteng and North West provinces)

Achievements:

• Proof of concept, content and technology solution

In South Africa. Service which integrates learning and

social media application (Mxit)

• Tight co-operation with South African operators in zero

rating the service

2010:

30 schools, 400 learners and 70 teachers in South

Africa (in Western Cape, North West and Eastern Cape )

Tight co-operation with Presidency and Department of

Education

Achievements:

• Evidence of impact on learning results: Research

demonstrates 14% better competences for those who

are using the service. 82 % of the usage happens

outside school hours. Research made by external

researchers.

• Affordability: learners use their own devices, running

costs and data delivery costs for the service are

affordable

2011:

150 schools, 14 000 learners and 500 teachers in South

Africa (In North West, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and

Free State)

Tight co-operation with Provincial Department of

Education

Pilot started in Finland with 300 learners and 8 teachers

Achievements:

• Browser based technology piloted in Finland. Proof that

the same concept provides added value in an

advanced information society country. Research results

show good results of the usage.

• Tight co-operation with Finnish operators for getting the

service free for Finnish learners

• Cloud computing solution developed

• Proof of scalability to enable expansion to new countries

2012:

60 000 learners in formal education system and 150 000

learners in informal space in South Africa

Tight co-operation with Provincial Department of Education

and Department of Science and Technology

500 learners in Finland (high schools and one Business

College)

Expanding the service to new countries (Tanzania, Senegal (in

co-operation with UNESCO) and 2013 to Nigeria

Investigating possibilities to integrate Nokia Mobile

Mathematics to Life Tool service in order to get

Sustainability

Achievements:

• Replicability readiness for expansion to new countries

Good uptake and

use in 2010

• 30 schools - 3,958 Grade 10 mathematics learners:

• 66% of the learners registered visited the service.

• 2,136 learners were active users, completing at least one practice exercise

or test on the service:

– 54% of all the registered learners, and

– 82% of the learners who visited the service.

• 656 learners used the service regularly during 2010 (completing more than

16 exercises or tests)

• 121 learners were extensive users (completing more than 45 exercises and

tests)

• 9 learners (from 4 different schools), completed more than 1,000 exercises

and tests each. One learner completed 3,026 tests and exercises.

Even better uptake

and use in 2011

• 20% of the learners that used the service in 2010, continued using the

service in 2011, despite being in Grade 11.

• 2011 saw:

– More schools

– More learners

– More active learners

– More exercises and tests

– More done per learner

– Researched impact on mathematics results

learners’ An ‘active learner’ has

completed at least one practice

exercise or test.

% of Active learners shows

how many of the registered

learners, have proceeded to

complete at least one exercise

or test.

•In 2010 learners were

automatically registered (from

class lists).

•In 2011 learners registered

More

exercises

and tests

Practice exercises consist of

5-10 questions on a topic, and

at a degree of difficulty.

Questions are randomly

generated from a database.

Learners may complete these

repeatedly.

Tests are also randomly

generated.

Tests may only be completed

once by each learner.

More done

per learner

By July 2011, learners were, on

average, completing more

practice exercises and tests

than the learners in 2010

completed over the whole year.

The 705 Grade 11 learners still

using the Grade 10 service

were using it more often than

was the case in 2010. NOTE: Practice exercises consist of 5-

Impact on

results

• Analysis of results from 1,950 learners on their 2010 academic results:

• On average, the final Grade 10 maths marks of learners who used Momaths

regularly were 7% better than their peers who did not use the service.

– On average, the Grade 10 maths marks of learners who did not use

Momaths dropped by 17% from their Grade 9 marks.

– The marks of their peers who did use Momaths regularly dropped by

11% from their Grade 9 marks.

(2010 academic year)

Context: Grade 10 marks tend to drop from Grade 9
