PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
ADVENT
The Church year begins with the Season of Advent, and this Season commences this Sunday.
The story of the Jesse Tree is a focus at this time of the year and I share with you the following information which
will certainly add to the depth and meaning of the Advent season.
The Jesse Tree
Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit
of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.… Isaiah 11: 1-2
What is the Jesse Tree, of what is the prophet Isaiah speaking? “A shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse”. Jesse was the father of King David. We imagine a bare, withered tree
stump, with no trunk or top, and it looks dead and as though the stump will never bear any fruit any more. But, a
small shoot sprouts from the root of this dry stump and this is the Davidic dynasty. Because of its unsightliness and
misery, it is not named after David but after his father. When Christ was born, there was nothing royal about that
dynasty. But a new shoot (Jesus) did spring from the stump.
The royal authority of the house of David had lain dormant for 600 years when Jesus came as King and Messiah.
When Jesus came forth, it was like a new green branch coming from an apparently dead stump.
In calling the Messiah a rod from the stem of Jesse, the humble nature of the Messiah is being emphasised. Jesse
was the much less famous father of King David. It is far more humble to say “from Jesse” than to say “from King
David.”
The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1 "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of
his roots." It is a vehicle to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Advent Season with the
faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history. The Branch is a biblical sign of newness out of discouragement,
which became a way to talk about the expected Messiah (for example, Jer 23:5). It is therefore an appropriate
symbol of Jesus Christ, who is the revelation of the grace and faithfulness of God.
Think of a Jesse Tree as a sort of advent calendar with each day depicting important characters, many of them in
the genealogy of Jesus, starting with creation and ending with Christmas. Of course, we cannot include all the
significant people in 24 days but each year we hope to choose different important members in the story.
How does it work?
Every day for about four weeks until Christmas, the image of a character from the Old Testament will hang on the
tree with the appropriate symbol/ornament. Your family is encouraged to read the passage from the Bible that
recounts the story of that character, talk about the story and pray. The readings walk chronologically through the
Bible, highlighting 24 historical moments that lead to the birth of Jesus.

YEAR 7 2016 ORIENTATION DAY
Year 6 students had a wonderful day at the College on Friday. It is important that they
have several opportunities to meet with other students with whom they will commence
their high school journey next year.
This day provided them with some insight into the daily life of secondary school which involves the regular
changing of rooms, bells ringing and new teachers for each subject.
Sincere thanks to Mr Dom Ashe the Year 7 Leader of Pastoral Care for 2016. He has been doing an awesome job
for Year 7 2016 while also caring for and supporting Year 8 2015.
I appreciate his time, effort, care and hours of work given to both these year groups.
SCHOOL FEE REMINDER
I appreciate the wonderful support we receive from parents and a considerable number of
grandparents who make the payment of school fees a high priority. I also appreciate the
commitment many have made by so readily embracing the preferred „direct debit‟ method of
paying fees. This method gives us a cash flow throughout the year and enables us to meet our
own financial commitments on an on-going basis.
If you have outstanding fees I would urge you to finalise the account as soon as possible. This will assist us greatly
to meet our own commitments and provide the resources required to maintain a high standard of teaching and
learning.
Anyone experiencing financial difficulties and who may be unable to meet the standard fee, should not hesitate to
contact our school Fees Manager, Trudi Hosking (65887444), so that alternative arrangements can be made.
SUBJECT FEES
I would also appreciate parents paying all students‟ subject and excursion fees. All these fees are
paid directly to the venues or cover transport costs incurred to run these extra activities. If you are
in need of assistance please call me as soon as possible.
2016 ENROLMENTS
We currently have a large number of families on waiting lists for enrolments into
each of the Year groups. In order to offer places it is essential that the school
knows if any students will not be continuing here next year. If your son or
daughter will not be continuing at MacKillop College in 2016, please advise the
school office as soon as possible.

YEARS 7-10 MAJOR AWARD CEREMONY
A special occasion for our junior students is the Years 7-10 Major Award Ceremony which will be held
on Wednesday, 16th
December at the MacKillop College MPC (Junior Site). This is an opportunity to
acknowledge students who have excelled in many areas - academic, cultural and sporting. These students
receive a trophy as a symbol of their involvement and achievement in a particular area.
It has become a tradition that these awards are sponsored by families or businesses in our College
community. If you are interested in sponsoring an award we would love to hear from you. Your support
is invaluable and greatly appreciated. The cost of the sponsorship is $50 per award.
Listed below are the awards which currently require sponsorship:
Outstanding School Spirit – Year 10
“Quiet Achievers” – Year 7
“Quiet Achievers” – Year 10

OFFICE NEWS
ABSENCES FOR YEAR 11
As you may be aware, we are currently contacting parents via text message for absences
daily. If you respond to this text, we can use this information in lieu of a note being written.
However, the reply text must state the student‟s name, parent‟s name and reason for
absence. If this is not stated on the text, the reply cannot be used and a written note will be
required. All written/text explanations for absences must be received within seven days.
SECOND HAND UNIFORMS
The senior campus has an abundance of secondhand uniforms for both boys and girls. Unfortunately, there are no
girls‟ skirts left.
If your uniform is looking a bit weary come and see Jenny or Kylie on the senior campus.
SUBJECT AND EXCURSION STATEMENTS – YEARS 7-10 Thank you to those families who have met this commitment. Term 4 fees are now overdue. Reminder statements
have been mailed. Payments via Bpay are encouraged on a regular basis (weekly/fortnightly) for those who are not
making payment in full. These amounts may need to be increased over the coming weeks to ensure a nil balance is
on the account by the beginning of December.
Queries regarding these accounts should be directed to the main College office (Ocean Drive).
YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS
The last couple of weeks have been exciting for MacKillop Youth Ministry!
Last Tuesday we were blessed to have Fr Rob Galea and his music assistant Joe
Moorhouse, One Strength Tour, come to our school. Fr Rob gave his testimony
and inspired us all to reach out and grab the strength that God gives freely to us.
Thank you to everyone who made the event possible.
Nic and I would also like to invite all students to join us for the lunchtime groups that
we have running around the school. JOLT runs at junior room 18 on Monday for Years
7-8. Young Women of God is at the senior site in room 16 for Years 10 -11. Alive is in
junior room 18 on Friday for Years 9-10. Come hang out with us.
Peace and Blessings,

YEAR 11 NEWS
THANK YOU
A very special thank you to Mr Phil Lloyd, Mrs Jenny Watson and Mrs Erin Denham who have been organising
lunchtime games for the Year 11 students. They have been a source of great fun and friendly competition.
AWARDS CEREMONY Next Wednesday morning there will be a special awards ceremony for Year 11 students. As
well as Application and Achievement awards given out for the Preliminary exams, we will be
acknowledging the great achievements of students throughout the year. Students have been
nominated by staff members in a number of categories such as School Spirit, Quiet Achiever,
St Agnes Parish Involvment, Reuben F Scarf and Caltex All Rounder and the winners will be
announced at this assembly. Parents are warmly invited to attend. The assembly will be in the
senior MPC and will begin at 9.00a.m.
CHRISTMAS HAMPERS I applaud the generosity of students who are currently preparing Christmas hampers for
people in our Port Macquarie community. These parcels are filled with all the goodies that
most of us take for granted at Christmas time but there are many people who struggle to
provide gifts and food for their families at this time. I urge Year 11 students who have a
driver‟s licence to consider delivering these hampers to people on Sunday, 6th December.
Please let me know if you can do this.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Shir and Lianne Seidenman who recently became Australian
Citizens and to Cody Ross who will gain his citizenship early in the new year.

YEAR 10 NEWS
IMPORTANT DATE
15th December – Liturgy, North Brother Mountain walk and aqua scramble afternoon.
STAYING ON TASK
Students should remember that they need to work right up to the end of the year. Most
employers look at school attendance as an indication of who will be most reliable and
suitable for their workplace. Recently a representative from Newman College spoke to
students about how important attendance is now in regards to future opportunities for
traineeships.
Students should look at the end goal of receiving a ROSA and successfully completing
Year 10. A large part of achieving this comes through regular school attendance.
CONGRATULATIONS In addition to Hunter Leishman making the Far North Coast Interbranch Surf Lifesaving team,
congratulations to Ashlee Power who has also made the Far North Coast Interbranch team. Ashlee
and Hunter will now compete at the Interbranch Championships at Cape Hawke Saturday, 12th and
Sunday, 13th December. Best of luck Ashlee and Hunter.
Congratulations to Hannah Middlebrook who receives a Pastoral Coordinator‟s Award. Keep up
the good work.
CHRIS DOYLE RETREAT
The Chris Doyle Retreat was a fantastic opportunity for students
to let their hair down for a day after completing the exam period.
Students had a fantastic time showing off some of their hidden
talents.

YEAR 9 NEWS
WHITE RIBBON DAY 2016
The prayer focus for our year meeting this week was White Ribbon Day. Held on 25th
November each year, White Ribbon Day is a campaign designed to generate awareness,
educate and promote the safety of all women and children. If people listen and speak up,
we can all play a role in empowering others and eliminate domestic violence.
HOUSE CAPTAINS FOR 2016
Voting for House Captains concluded this week. Successful candidates will be announced in the
near future. Focus now moves to voting for the Student Council representatives for 2016.
PASTORAL COORDINATOR AWARDS
Congratulations to Sophie Smith on receiving a Pastoral Coordinator‟s Award this week.

YEAR 8 NEWS
EXAMS
Exams have been completed and teachers are now marking and collating student reports. End of year reports should
assist students to ascertain the areas in which they achieved well, and the areas which will require greater attention
next year.
SRC Year 8 have just completed an interesting activity going through the SRC process. Last
week students had the opportunity to nominate a friend or themselves. Then that was
collated and short-listed where all nominees had the chance to accept the opportunity to
be part of the leadership team in 2016. From there, 24 students were selected to appear
on the ballot paper, then students had to nominate 4 from that wide list. Needless to say
the successful representatives will find out soon and will be pleased to know how well
people have spoken about them.
CONGRATULATIONS The following students have been awarded a Pastoral Coordinator‟s Award:
Aasta Brownlow (2), Paige Leishman (3), Alycia Lipovac, Mason O’Neill, Sam
Nunan, Kyden Power-O’Toole, Isaac Post, Jane Spinks and Annika Toohey (2).
Paige Leishman has also been selected in the Far North Coast Interbranch Surf Lifesaving team.
She has done very well to make this team knowing she competed in huge surf at Salt Beach and
Cabarita Beach – all the training has paid off.
Well done!

dedication to make this team. They will now compete at the Interbranch Championships at Cape Hawke on
Saturday, 12th and Sunday, 13
th December. Best of luck!

THANK YOU
Thank you to all Year 7 students and families who have supported the Christmas hampers this year.
The Parish is extremely grateful for the generosity and selflessness of members of our MacKillop
College community to help others in need at Christmas.
ASSESSMENT RESULTS
As students begin to receive results for their most recent assessment tasks, I encouraged them not to linger in the
emotional reaction of a mark, rather take a little time to reflect on the feedback and ascertain what they are doing
well and any areas for improvement. It is good practice to reflect and evaluate upon results at home and make note
of levels of progress.
I was reminded this week that some students are feeling a little fatigued. I
encouraged everyone in Year 7 to enjoy their weeks of learning without the
pressure of assessment deadlines, and strengthen their relationships with friends
and staff through respectful words and actions.

PUBLIC SPEAKING NEWS
LIONS YOUTH OF THE YEAR COMPETITION
FIRST ROUND REPORT
Over the last few weeks Stephanie Clark (Year10) has been
competing in the first round of the Lions‟ Youth of the Year
Competition. This competition has been running in Australia for
50 years and is designed to encourage, foster and develop
leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our
youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of
employment or higher education.
The first round of the competition is composed of three main sections:
1. Written submission that gets students to outline their leadership skills, sporting or cultural activities,
citizenship and community involvement, academic achievements and hobbies.
2. 45 minute formal interview with three judges selected from our local community. This year‟s judges were
Anne Wheatland (St Joseph‟s Family Services), Julie Beard (St Columba Anglican School) and Robbie
Lloyd (SkillsLink Training)
3. Speech night where students give a five minute prepared speech as well as two impromptu speeches on
topics they are shown immediately before the speaking time.
This year three students were competing in this Club round; Stephanie and two students from Hastings Secondary
College. All three students highly impressed the judges, in particular the way they handled the impromptu
speeches. Being ask to speak for two minutes on „You are at the Melbourne Comedy festival and you have to sell
the shirt off your back‟ with no preparation time is a big challenge!
In the end Stephanie was deemed the winner of both the public speaking component and the overall competition.
This is an amazing achievement and means she will now go on to the next round of this national competition early
next year.
I would like to thank Scott Bailey and the Port Macquarie Lions‟ Club for organising this event and the National
Australia Bank for their continued sponsorship of this competition.
Stewart Smith Public Speaking Co-ordinator
BIG DAY OUT NEWS
BIG DAY OUT – MacKillop Munchies & Sugar Rush a success!!!
The annual MacKillop College Big Day Out is fast approaching. Students
are encouraged to start assisting their PC teachers with posters and the
promotion of the activity that they are running on the day.
Thank you to Mrs Nicole Bailey and Mrs Lisa Kable who have been busily
supporting the Make a Difference program through their Year 11 Business
Studies classes. The students have come up with their own business
concepts „MacKillop Munchies’ and „Sugar Rush’ and marketed these
businesses amongst the student body.
As a result Emma Dennington, Brenden Grainger and Ellie Kable
presented a cheque at assembly to the value of $172 on behalf of their peers
to go towards the Solomon Islands Fund. This fund helps assist students in
the Solomon Islands who have very little (no electricity, no running water,
and walk 10km to school every day often without breakfast).
Well done Year 11, an inspiring effort!
MACKILLOP COLLEGE BIG DAY OUT – CASHLESS EVENT
FRIDAY, 11TH DECEMBER
What does this mean? Simply – no cash will change hands ON THE DAY! All students will be encouraged to pre-purchase their tickets from the „Bank of Solomon’ – no cash sales
for activities/food on the day. A ticket booth will operate on the day for those who forget to pre-purchase
or would like to purchase more tickets.
What do you need to do? $1 tickets will be on sale in Weeks 9 and 10.
Sales will be conducted from the Room 36 (Science block) windows at the Bank of Solomon (BOS) each
LUNCHTIME leading up to the event (except Tuesdays). The number of tickets a student pays
for will be recorded.
Tickets will then be distributed (in an envelope with student’s name) during morning PC on
Friday, 11th December - Big Day Out day!
Please note: Tickets will not be redeemable for cash on the day or follow the event.
