However, I am heartened by your interest in ensuring that our Bishop Ireton Council has a financially secure and stable home going forward. I’m optimistic that we’ll achieve that goal and eventually be able to focus more on traditional council activities ranging from charitable events to degree ceremonies. Speaking of which, I’m proud that we’ve maintained our participation in activities that promote our fraternal values during this time of change. I want to thank all who took part in the Christmas celebration serving the patients and staff of McGuire Veterans Center on December 24 th . Dozens of knights, as well as relatives of knights, joined in assisting our veterans. The team effort made the event a big success. My older brother Dan, who is not a member of our order, took part in serving the meal. I think he was a bit reluctant to join in the effort, but then he didn’t have much choice given that he was staying at my home for Christmas. After the event was over, Dan thanked me for having him come along to help our veterans. He volunteered that it felt good to do “something that mattered” to help people in the community. More importantly, he said it made him think he really needed to look into how he could do similar activities where he lives in Northern Virginia. I tell you this as an example of how our council’s work serving others often has unpredicted but positive benefits. Our fraternal values truly are “force multipliers” as those of you who have served in the military might say. Grand Knight’s MessageBrother Knights and Families:

In the future our council will look back at the year 2020 as a year of big decisions. By the time you’re reading this our Bishop Ireton Corporation will already have held a strategic planning meeting on January 26th. At that meeting we’ll have explored the viability of the Bishop Ireton Center remaining our council’s home. That remains to be determined.

I want to thank all who took part in the Christmas celebration serving the patients and staff of McGuire Veterans Center on December 24th. Dozens of knights, as well as relatives of knights, joined in assisting our veterans. The team effort made the event a big success. Knight and Family of the Month

The February Knight of the Month Our February Knight of theMonth is brother Frank Cuffe. Frank is a long-timeparishioner at St. Augustine who has served our Bishop IretonCouncil in too many capacities to easily list. He’s been ourKnight of the Year award on multiple occasions and heshowed his dedication yet again on Christmas Eve morning.Frank had kindly arranged for the purchase of the shrimp thatwe serve to veterans at McGuire Veterans Center onChristmas Eve as part of their Christmas celebration. However, when Frank was at the BIC on Christmas Evemorning, he realized that we had received uncooked shrimpinstead of the cooked shrimp he had ordered. Consequently, when help came to pick up the shrimp they found Frank justfinishing up the cooking of some thirty pounds of shrimp.Frank’s alertness and dedication prevented a fiasco that wouldhave disappointed the veterans we wanted to serve. This isjust one instance of Frank exemplifying our order’s spirit ofcharity and he is quite rightly February Knight of the Month.(GK Matt McGuire)

The February Family of the Month Doug and Jerri PatMacPherson are our February Family of the Month. TheMacPhersons are parishioners at St. Augustine’s and arestrong supporters of a wide array of activities supporting theparish and our council. Whether it is championing pro-familycauses or supporting a grieving family in the community,Doug and Jerri Pat are always on the scene serving the churchand our Bishop Ireton Council. Most recently, Doug and JerriPat were among those taking the lead in helping to serveveterans at the annual Christmas celebration at McGuireVeterans Center on December 24th.Though Doug was just out of the hospital himself, he was atthe Medical Center with Jerri Pat helping to manage thelogistic challenges of serving hundreds of people. This isalways a challenge, but it was especially difficult givenrenovations involving the Center’s multipurpose room.Fortunately, less experienced volunteers benefited from Dougand Jerri Pat’s knowledge and leadership and the event was atremendous success. Doug and Jerri Pat never fail to summongreat energy to serve those in need. Therefore, they are ourFebruary Family of the Month. (GK Matt McGuire)

Military Retiree News

Some Dental benefits are provided by the VA according tolaw. In some instances, VA is authorized to provideextensive dental care, while in other cases treatment may belimited. For veterans, you might be better off having yourown private dental insurance. Qualifying conditions are hardto meet.

Outpatient Dental Program Conditions

The eligibility for outpatient dental care is not thesame as for most other VA medical benefits and iscategorized into classes. Check out the table belowto see if you are eligible, and what services you mayreceive.

Have a service-connected compensable dentaldisability or condition - Any needed dental care.

Have a service-connected non- compensable dentalcondition or disability resulting from combatwounds or service trauma - Any dental carenecessary to provide and maintain functioning teeth.A Dental Trauma Rating or VA Regional OfficeRating Decision letter is required

Are an enrolled veteran who may be homeless andreceiving care?

Have a dental condition clinically determined by VAto be associated with and aggravating a service-connected medical condition

Veterans receiving hospital, nursing home, ordomiciliary care will be provided any essentialdental services as determined by a VA dentist.

The Department of Veterans Affairs wants to eliminate arule requiring faith-based organizations to find secularalternatives for veterans who refuse help because of thegroups' religious nature. The proposed change has beenpublished in the Federal Register. The public can commentuntil Feb. 18 on whether the VA should eliminate the ruleand its requirement that religious groups post notices aboutthis referral procedure. The VA said in a news release thatthe current rule "unequally placed impediments on religiousorganizations and cast unwarranted suspicion on them."

A Note from Our Insurance Agent

This month’s tip is from Brother Knight Sal FilIppelli, The

Abbate Agency, K of C’s Advisor.

Most of us save money during our working years in order toattain a reasonable standard of living in our retirement. Aswe get closer to retirement, we need to become more riskaverse in order to protect that accumulated wealth. Most

people have their funds in a 401K which hasn’t beentaxed yet. Tax rates are the lowest in our history. Futuretax rates will be higher. Probable much higher! Theneed to have a plan to protect these funds as well asmove these funds out of your 401K in the best waypossible way is key.We can help you build and execute this planning.

If you don’t have a plan for retirement or a plan toprotect your assets, please call me. Even if you do havea plan a second onion wouldn’t hurt. Remember, whatyou don’t know can hurt you! Having a plan willprevent frustration and provide you peace of mind.“Plans fail for a lack of council, but with many advisersthey succeed” -, Proverbs 15:22Our team is here to serve you.

March for Life Bus Trip....

The March for Life was an inspiring, peaceful. Vibrant, and joy-filled rally of women, men, young people, and children

from all across the country. Every year, tens of thousands of pro-lifers converge on the National Mall and march on Capitol Hill

on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling which legalized abortion in all 50 states. It’s the largest annual human rights demonstration in the world. But this is not just a protest… TOGETHER, WE GATHERED TO CELEBRATE LIFE. January was that time of the year that some would board a bus and go to Washington, DC. This year was historic as it was the first time any President of the United States attend and spoke to the large gatheratrhing. I was glad to a part of that group and get a glimpse of the President. I am grateful to Knights of Columbus from St. Gabriel’s Church who provided a seat for me and my siter. This was her first time at attending the March. She was humbled at the sight of so many young people who were there. We were also sad to hear of a bus in Kentucky returning from the March that was involved in a traffic accident and one person, the driver of the car that hit the bus, died at the scene. Please pray for that person’s soul.

Financial Secretary’s Report

We have a 1st Degree Ceremony scheduled for 7:00 pm February 10th in the BIC Clubroom. We have several candidates for this Degree and have at least one potential candidate who could be voted on at the next Council meeting. Allmembers should try to attend the Degree on the 10th to welcome our new members to the Council.

The 2020 Council dues notices were sent out this year via email by using the Supreme K of C member billing system. I worked with Buddy Cranford to update our membership email address information. The total assessment amount for regular members is $41.65 which includes $36 for dues, $2 for Culture of Life and $3.65 for Penny per Knight per Day (PKD) for

Vocations. Payment can be made at Council meetings or by mailing to the BIC office.

Also, as your mail or email addresses change, inform me or Buddy Cranford so we will have current contact information.Thank You,Paul Clements, Financial Secretary804-735-6749 [email protected]

Notice of Special Corporate Meeting (BIC)

All members are asked to attend this special meeting of the BIC Corporation where the BIC Board of Directors will present a resolution on the sale of the property.

At the recent BIC Membership meeting held on January 26, members present expressed clear consensus that the building had lost its charitable mantle, was too expensive to operate and was without adequate building reserves. Members present also agreed that action related to the sale of the property should advance as suggested.

The details of this resolution will be discussed and developed at the BIC Board Meeting on February 12, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. All members of the corporation are encouraged to attend this meeting.

The resolution will then be presented to the fullmembership of the corporation in attendance on February 23, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. The quorum for that meeting is 34 members. The proposed resolution will need approval of a two-third majority. The Board asks that members take the responsibility of assuring that a quorum is present at this meeting by offering rides and reminders.

A brief question/answer and comment session will be held following the 2:00 p.m. Council meeting on February 9, 2020.

Anyone with questions on the activities and events of the BIC Board are asked to please contact the BIC office at 804-745-3262 or [email protected]. Concerns may also be sent to BIC President, Paul Clements or GK Matt McGuire, Chairman of the BIC Board.
