Of the more than six million vehicle crashes each year, 24 percent areweather related, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.Seventy-five percent of weather-related crashes occur on wet pavementand 47 percent during rainfall, the DOT states. Poor visibility, lane obstructions and pavement friction are all key

issues to keep in mind while driving through rainy spring conditions.

The First Big RainBe careful driving after your area’s first big rain of the spring season.

Heavy rain after a long dry period can release oil, grease and dirt fromthe pavement, creating extra slippery conditions, according to theNational Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grime builds up on the roadway and can make it difficult for your

tires to gain proper traction. Use extra caution after the first rain and giveyourself some extra travel time.

Windshield WipersThere is no worse time to realize your windshield wipers are worn out

than during a rain storm. Neglected blades put drivers and passengers at serious risk by impair-

ing vision and causing streaking. Inexpensive and easy to replace your-self, changing out your windshield wiper blades is paramount to yoursafety at all times, especially during the rainy season. Many car care centers and retailers will even install them free of

charge for you.

Tire IssuesThin tire treads create hazardous driving conditions when water

builds up on the roadway, according to the Car Care Council. Deep tread can easily accommodate extra water from a rain storm.

Thin tread causes your tire to hydroplane, which is essentially losing con-tact with the pavement and riding up on a film of water. The Car Care Council recommends checking your tire tread by insert-

ing a penny into the grooves of the tread. If you are able to see all ofLincoln’s head, your tire is in need of a replacement.

Drive SafelyWith proper driving techniques and common sense, smart driving is

possible even in less-than-ideal conditions. Slow down and give yourself extra space on the highway. Following

fellow drivers too closely during rainy conditions can lead to the need tobrake quickly, which can lead to skidding and loss of control. Avoid distractions such as phone calls, eating, drinking and texting

while driving. Those actions can wait until you safely reach your destina-tion.

Dealing WithSpring Showers

Spring showers can bring more than Mayflowers. They can also bring dangerous, slippery conditions to the roadways, too.

Page 4: Car Care Spring 2014

There's more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the openroad. A number of factors come into play when towing cargo or anoth-er vehicle, including the towing capacity of the vehicle doing the haul-ing. The following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the roadwith trailer in tow.

Tow vehiclesWhile many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles

are necessarily right for the job. Review the towing capacities of variousvehicles depending on the type of trailer that will be towed. A larger, more powerful vehicle may be necessary if you will be towing some-thing large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle. You mayneed more horsepower to maintain a safe driving speed when towingespecially heavy cargo.

EquipmentDifferent manufacturers offer towing packages equipped to work in

concert with your vehicle. Towing packages may include certain types ofhitches, batteries, flasher systems, extended-view side mirrors, and evenspecial axles and tires. In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight ofmore than 1,500 pounds requires a separate braking system and abreakaway switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates thetrailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle. Having theright equipment can mean the difference between safely towing cargoand getting in an accident.

AbilityHaving a lot of power and the right equipment is not enough to safe-

ly tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driving over thespeed limit, is a recipe for an accident. It typically takes time and somepractice for drivers to grow accustomed to driving while towing cargo.Driving while towing cargo requires that drivers maneuver their vehiclesdifferently than they would in more typical conditions, and that they

drive at slower speeds while leaving room for a larger turning radius. Inaddition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight when braking.

Vehicle checkVerifying that the trailer hitch is secure is not the only inspection driv-

ers must conduct before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing thetowing should be serviced, and any repairs should be made. Check fluidlevels, particularly the transmission fluid. In addition, make sure thewater level in the battery is acceptable and have the motor oil changedif it is nearing its mileage limit. It's also a good idea to replace the air fil-ter, examine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes. When the trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch a once-over to

double-check that everything is in working order. This can be done dur-ing service station stops along the trip.Spring is a season of recreational fun and long road trips, but it pays

to play it safe when towing gear and other cargo.

Learn To TowCargo Safely

Warm weather is on the horizon, and peoplefrom all over are preparing their vehiclesfor another season of road trips. In addi-

tion to packing the interior cargo areas full of equip-ment and luggage, many road-trippers also haul gearand recreational accessories with them.

The size and weight of a trailer and the cargo it's towing must be consid-ered before embarking on a trip.

Without jumper cables and another vehicle to provide a jump, youcould actually be stranded for a long period time. And while that can bedangerous in its own regard, working to repair or jump-start your batterycan also be hazardous. According to the Sight and Hearing Association, about 6,000 people

suffer serious eye injuries, including blindness, each year from workingaround car batteries. These damages can be avoided with an under-standing of how batteries work.

Battery DangersSo why are batteries so dangerous? They contain sulfuric acid and

produce hydrogen and oxygen gases that can cause a battery to explodewhen they come into contact with a spark, according to the NationalSafety Council.Eye injuries are the most common caused by a battery explosion

because of the flying fragments and acid. Whenever cleaning, changingor checking your battery, it is important to wear eye safety protection.

Safety MonthThe month of October has been designated as Auto Battery Safety

Month to raise awareness of battery dangers, promote battery safety, and educate motorists on how to properly and safely jump-start andchange a battery. But don’t wait until October to practice safe batterycare.

• Regularly check your car’s battery for wear and damage• Purchase a pair of jumper cables that are at least 12 feet long, color

coded, and tested and approved by the Society of Automotive Engineers• Equip your vehicle with proper safety goggles, a flashlight, and a

step-by-step guide for jump-starting a car battery• Turn off lights, heater, and all other electronic loads before jump-

starting• Never jump-start a frozen battery, allow the two vehicles or jumper

cables to touch each other, or lean over the battery when making con-nections

Dead Battery? Jump It Safely

Knowledge of how a car battery works and howto safely change one can be invaluable infor-mation to any driver. Car batteries can die at

inopportune times, leaving you stranded with no wayof starting your vehicle.

Safer products are on the market for cleaning. There are maintenancetips that every driver should follow to cut down on harmful emissions. The information is out there. It is up to us to put it into practice.

Air FiltersA dirty air filter has a direct impact on your car’s performance and effi-

ciency. The dirtier the filter, the more gas burned during driving. Your air filter can become clogged with dirt, dust and bugs and

should be regularly inspected. Changing it will not only improve yourengine’s functioning, but will cut down on the amount of gas that isbeing emitted into the atmosphere.

Tire ChecksAccording to the Car Care Council, about two billion gallons of gas

each year could be saved if the tires on every American’s car were prop-erly inflated. Improperly inflated tires add resistance and balance issues that make

your car’s system to work harder to move down the highway. The coun-cil states that tire issues can increase fuel costs as much as three to fivecents per gallon. Check your owner’s manual for your car’s optimal tire pressure.

Gas Fill-UpsYou may think that you’re doing your car a service by topping off the

tank while filling up. But doing so can actually cost you in the long run. Some pumps engineered to protect the environment draw extra

vapors back into the pump, according to the Environmental ProtectionAgency. This means you could be paying for even more gas than you aregetting.Remember to stop pumping when the nozzle shuts off and check

your car’s gas cap. A loose or damaged cap can lead to evaporated gasthat can harm the environment and waste your money.

Proper DisposalIf you change your own oil and perform your own car repairs, it is vital

that you dispose of all engine fluids and batteries in the proper manner. Some repair facilities accept these items from customers and can dis-

pose of them free of charge. You can also contact your local government’s safety office for informa-

tion on hazardous material drop-off and recycling stations. Doing so canhelp keep harmful fluids from damaging animals and the environment.

Greener, Cleaner Car

As science and research continue to advance,we find out more and more ways we can belightening the load on our environment. How

we drive and care for our vehicles is no exception.

If one of your headlight bulbs goes out, you can be putting yourselfand others at risk for a serious accident or a citation for a non-movingviolation. Luckily, changing out a headlight bulb is a quick and painlessprocess – at least in new model cars. If you drive an older model, you may need to consult your manual,

as many require you to remove the entire lamp to change your bulb.Streamlined and simplified, recent models require a one- or two-stepbulb replacement process. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Locate Your Bulb and Identify Its TypeCars and trucks come with headlight bulbs that plug into the back of

the headlight lens housing. You can find out what type of bulb you need by checking your man-

ual, asking the service clerk at your local car care center or by simplyopening the hood and locating the back of your headlight. The bulbholder will typically have a small wire harness protruding into theengine bay.

Changing Headlight Bulbs

Yes, the days are seemingly getting longeragain. But you still need your headlights to bein proper working order.

Step 2: Removing Your Old BulbUsing caution to avoid breaking the affixing metal or plastic clip,

remove the wire harness from the bulb holder. Rotate the bulb to releaseit from the headlamp assembly.

Step 3: Installing Your New BulbCarefully rotate your new bulb into place within the headlight assem-

bly. Handle the bulb with a clean tissue or rag while replacing to avoidleaving behind oils from your skin that can cause premature failure.Reattach the wire harness to the back of your new headlight bulb, andyou should be all set.

Change the PairRemember, if you are using a different type bulb for a burned-out

headlight, you must place that same type bulb in the working headlight. In fact, DMV.org recommends that you replace both bulbs at all times toavoid differences in brightness, even if only one bulb is burned out.

AUTOMOTIVE CONSUMER TIPS |

Rest assured you don't need to be a car guy or gal to find a trustwor-thy and talented mechanic. You might just need to open a dialogue witha prospective mechanic, discussing a handful of topics that can help youfeel more comfortable and know you have made the right choice inautomotive service provider once a final decision has been made.

CertificationCertification can go a long way toward helping drivers find mechanics

they can trust. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellencewas founded in 1972 and continues to work to improve the quality ofautomotive service and repair by testing automotive technicians and cer-tifying those who live up to or exceed ASE standards. An ASE-certifiedtechnician should have his or her credentials readily available toprospective customers, and these credentials list each professional'sarea of certification. When shopping for a new mechanic, make sure thathe or she is ASE-certified. In addition, discuss with the mechanic his orher work history, including any additional areas of expertise.

Pricing policiesMany mechanics offer free estimates, but that should not be taken for

granted. When bringing a car in for an estimate, drivers should confirmwith the mechanic who will conduct the examination if the estimate isfree or if they will be charged an inspection fee. In addition to any fees regarding estimates, drivers should also inquire

about labor costs and the payment policies at the facility. Labor can bequite expensive, so it's best that you know these rates in advance of anyrepairs being conducted on your vehicle. It's also important to get a run-down of the company payment policies, especially if your vehicle is in

Topics to discussbefore hiring yournext mechanic

Few decisions weigh as heavily on automobileowners as their choice of mechanic. A goodmechanic goes a long way toward ensuring

drivers and their passengers stay safe on the roadand that those drivers' vehicles perform at their peakfor years to come. That's an important role to play, and it's why many drivers acknowledge that choosinga mechanic is a decision that should not be takenlightly.

need of potentially costly repairs. You don't want the bill to shock youonce the work has been completed, so don't hesitate to be inquisitivebefore leaving a car at the garage.

PartsReplacing parts on a vehicle is a cause for concern for many drivers,

and rightfully so. Consumer advocacy groups have exposed manymechanics who pass off used auto parts as new parts, charging theircustomers new part prices along the way. While there's no way driverscan guarantee they won't fall victim to such criminal behavior, they caninquire about company policies regarding vehicle parts. Does the garageeven install used parts? If so, do they let drivers choose either new orused parts before any work is done? If the garage only uses new parts, ask for parts with solid warranties, so if the part must be replaced, youwon't have to pay for it again.

DocumentationThe preowned vehicle market is thriving, and drivers who take care of

their vehicles have earned the right to reap their rewards for being goodowners when it comes time to sell the car. When interviewing prospec-tive mechanics, ask if they are willing to provide detailed documentationof any work they do on your vehicle. Such documentation can then beshared with prospective buyers when you want to sell the car, and it alsoserves as a way to keep the garage accountable for all the work theyhave done on the car throughout your relationship.

That’s right. Your nose can hold the key to identifying specific odorsthat you should never ignore. Paying attention to these indicators canhelp you remain aware of your car’s engine health and reduce yourchances of breaking down. They key is acting fast and getting your car into the mechanic as

quickly as possible.

The Six Smells The Car Care Council identifies the following six smelly signs and

what they could mean for your car. For a more detailed list, visitCarCare.org.• Burned Rubber: This could mean slipping drive belts or misplaced

loose hoses. These loose parts could be rubbing against pulleys, caus-ing a burnt rubber scent. • Hot Oil: Oil that is leaking onto the exhaust system can emit a very

noticeable smell. To verify the leak, look for oil on the pavement orsmoke coming from the engine area.• Gasoline: This could mean a gas leak in some area of the vehicle

such as a fuel injector line or the fuel tank. Any smell of fuel is no laugh-ing matter. Gasoline is obviously considered a possible fire hazard, requiring your full attention and care. • Sweet Syrup: This sweet scent is a telltale sign that you have

engine coolant leaking from a component related your car’s cooling sys-tem. • Burning Carpet: This unique smell can mostly be linked to brake

trouble. Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell ishappening during normal driving conditions.• Rotten Eggs: You may be facing an issue with catalytic converter

not converting the hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxideproperly. This smell can also be associated with a poor-running engine.

Mechanics use all sorts of specialized toolsto repair your car, but the most powerfuldiagnostic device for detecting vehicle

issues may be on your face.
